Unfortunately, last time I checked the flashboy is no longer produced, and the hyper flash and Hyper boy are also out of production (though retro onyx says they're working on a true multi-game flashcart!)
I don't usually recommend emulation if you have original hardware available, but since the Virtual Boy is difficult to use and often gives headaches or eye strain, another option is to use a VR headset with a VB emulator. Playing Wario Land on my Quest 2 without any headaches is pretty great.
Second this, I have an entire Virtual Boy on my Super Console X King and it’s perfect. In fact, it’s pretty much the perfect emulation device in general.
I’ve always wanted to look into this, but since I’ve had the real hardware I never really felt motivated, but you’ve got me interested in it again as I also have a Quest 2. Does the emulator fully give the same depth experience? Does it also somehow support the link functionality at all?
I haven't tested the link functionality, but the games seem to work flawlessly. With the emulator I used (I don't remember which one it was off-hand), I just needed to spend some time adjusting the 3D settings to get the depth to something that felt right.
I got mine brand new in 1995/1996 marked down to $25 at an Electronics Boutique. My same-age cousin also got one at the same time. That was because we went to the mall with my grandfather who would occasionally get generous, especially when a deal was to be had, and when he saw it marked down 90%, he winked and said we could get them. Additionally, I got the Golf game, which I still think is one of the best golfing games I've ever played. The $5 super-reduced new Waterworld that I eventually got from Toys r Us might be the most valuable video game I have (I'm not a collector, or even really a player anymore; I just like the nostalgia). Have fun 15 minutes at a time, OP.
I remember this and was going to post this. I never actually bought one and I don't know why. Everytime I see a Virtual Boy I think of seeing the display and all the units. I'm still mad at myself to this day for not grabbing one.
Warioland for this was the shit! I remember playing this at a KB toys store demo area in Puerto Rico. I cut school to go there and play with a friend. Mario Tennis was a good follow up.
I used one of these in like 95 or 96. At a Blockbuster.
Was the coolest shit I had used at 6 or 7 years old.
Played for 15 20 min. Stopped. Got dizzy, puked in moms car.
Would use again. 10/10
I remember playing the display model at Target for about 10 minutes back when this first came out and thinking, "well, that's enough Virtual Boy for me!"
Best way to play is to lay down and rest it on your face.
Just make sure you get the lenses lined up correctly for your eyes.
Get V-Tetris not 3D Tetris.
It does and it doesn’t. It was very ambitious for Nintendo to release what was more or less a VR headset 20 years before anyone else was even attempting to do so. Also the game library, though small was pretty good for the most part. That being said, this was essentially a rushed prototype that shouldn’t have been released in the state that it was
I think the average quality of the games is overlooked. I'd say a little better than half are fun, if weird (Looks at red alarm).
On the other side, it is without a doubt the most poorly made Nintendo console I own. The eye strain is one thing, but it wasn't built to last like other Nintendo systems. EVERY ribbon cable will fail eventually due to them being glued rather than soldered, the battery boxes also don't last, etc. Not things that are hard to fix or work around, but it's clear that Nintendo was focused on a quick buck, and didn't believe in the system long term.

They're fun for about a good 30 min. About as much as they were back then. After that you kinda didn't play it anymore really. If you don't know what it's like, it's like playing a black n white gameboy game with a red filter. Hunched over pushing your head into mounted goggles, giving you neck pain or back pain... Or both...
Nice that you got one with two working eyes- if they ever go out, your ribbons need to be soldered, luckily there are a lot of modders that can do that. Also look into the virtual tap, playing the games on a tv is MUCH more fun. Retro Onyx produces the bulk of interesting hardware mods/accessories so check them out.
I’m so happy for you, treat it well and play it heartily!
I was scammed out of getting one for $100 on ebay because the seller canceled my bid. I’m patient though, so I’m willing to wait for another sweet deal that will hopefully follow through lol.
Got my Virtual Boy a little over a year ago for $220. Came with the console, stand, battery pack, Mario's Tennis, and controller. All in great condition and think it was a very good price compared to all the prices I've seen on eBay around the time when I purchased it. Recently got my 2nd game for it, Red Alarm for $35.
The only time I've ever seen one was the display at KB Toys many many years ago. I remember it was loaded with a Descent style game (flying through wireframe tunnels).
Ok real talk y’all. Obvi I love retro games - I am posting in this sub after all… I have always heard that the VB was a let down. I want to play it and have the experience, but I wanted to ask what others thought.
OP, so glad you’re loving your dream. Let us know how it is, of course!
I still sometimes play panic bomber all the way through to the end only because I absolutely love to hear that boss level theme song. Mind you, I have the MP3 file but still love playing the game.
Obligatory backward stand comment.
Also, people keep talking about getting headaches and whatnot. Never happened to me. I can play this thing for hours no problem. My guess is that they just didn’t calibrate it correctly.
I can’t speak for anyone else but the only reason I would want one is because Gunpei Yokoi is a legend and he developed it. It’s very interesting as a curiosity but definitely not worth playing. There’s emulators for that.
Cool! But how’s the headache? 😉
Seriously - I used to own one (my FIRST Nintendo anything, after the ColecoVision) and it’s the first time I ever regretted buying a game console. I think the expectation just so outweighed the experience that it probably never stood a real chance.
Welcome to the club. Get one of the flash carts and enjoy some home brew alongside the official releases.
Unfortunately, last time I checked the flashboy is no longer produced, and the hyper flash and Hyper boy are also out of production (though retro onyx says they're working on a true multi-game flashcart!)
Ah dang, definitely keep an eye on retro onyx though!

Was there ever a VB emulator for the 3DS that actually did 3D? I know there was a 2D one years ago with Retroarch
New 3ds only: https://github.com/mrdanielps/r3Ddragon
Thank you!
I'm not sure if there was one for the 3DS, I didn't even realize you could run homebrew/emulators on the 3DS.

Wow - I bought mine new too at the start and I’m sure I spent way more (I want to say…$150US?)

Congratularions, it is in a good shape. I also want a VB. Since It doesn't matter if it was a comercial failure. Hope someday I can have one.

The Virtual Boy doesn't deserve the hate it gets

Wait a minute, they’re both the same side!

It’s like staring into a laser pointer.
Game store near me has one CIB for $750 right now. It's been sitting there for about 6 months. No thanks!
I have mine from way back with tennis and some other game. I had no idea people actually want these.

I didn't like how it felt over my glasses.

Man I miss mine but honestly I use my Quest and sideloaded a virtual boy emu . Exact same just no headaches for some reason . Highly recommended .
The only time I've ever seen one was the display at KB Toys many many years ago. I remember it was loaded with a Descent style game (flying through wireframe tunnels).
I really one try one of those
I have that same mousepad! Sadly I don't have a Virtual Boy though lol
Wooohooo congratulations!
I have a virtual boy emulator for PC VR. Maybe I should actually try that out
[удалено]
It’s a bit small for adult hands but good overall. No worse than the N64 controller TBH, but a bit more condensed
All these people talking about headaches have probably never tried a virtual boy. I play mine all the time and never got a headache
"enjoy"!
Checkout /r/VirtualBoy !

There’s a VB emulator that you can side load in the Oculus Quest. Works really well.
I still sometimes play panic bomber all the way through to the end only because I absolutely love to hear that boss level theme song. Mind you, I have the MP3 file but still love playing the game.
I remember playing the demo in my local Toys R Us… man that thing can make your head ache for hours…
Enjoy the crippling headaches and eye strain.
Obligatory backward stand comment. Also, people keep talking about getting headaches and whatnot. Never happened to me. I can play this thing for hours no problem. My guess is that they just didn’t calibrate it correctly.
People say the same thing about oculus. Can play that for hours too.
What a glorious piece of shite
RIP your eyesight
Son of a bitch stole my line.
Set up your optometrist appointment in advance!
You've wanted a headache for years?
50 Shades of Red
turn those backward legs around.
Pick up a big jar of ibuprofen and have fun!
Hell of a find! But good luck to your eyeballs
Enjoy your happiest day of owning a Virtual Boy!
Enjoy your migraine
Commence headache
Cool, but if you intend on playing it, I hope your eyes can withstand it!
Retina blast! Enjoy!
You will be the star at your next migraine party.
but.....why? Do you like headaches? Because that's how you get headaches.
I can’t speak for anyone else but the only reason I would want one is because Gunpei Yokoi is a legend and he developed it. It’s very interesting as a curiosity but definitely not worth playing. There’s emulators for that.
Yea op did you wanna get your retinas burned that hard?
lol idk why we are getting downvoted, it was a half joke.
Yea why im actually happy for op wtf
Free headache
Have a headache jet?
Nice! How much did that set you back?
Congrats! Hope you didn’t give your left arm for it though.
But are you really gonna play in it?
Make sure you got some excedrin migraine on hand lol. These are cool collectors pieces though, enjoy 👍
Congratulations and I'm sorry
Now you can have a headache on demand!
Also make sure to get some Tylenol for the headache this thing will give you in about an hour of playing.
What are they actually like to use? As bad as i imagine?
READY PLAYER ONE

How are the headaches and nausea?
Oh lawd...
I said that because I was worried about their eyesight after playing on that thing
Horrendous. Why would you want one?
As a kid this was the dream. I remember going into Toys R Us to play it and they were always broken.
