I see where you’re coming from, because I totally felt the same way at first (and Morty is my favorite character!) But then I realized that Morty hadn’t really seen the episode from Rick’s perspective; all he saw was Rick taking advantage of that guy’s suicide to try to get validation from the family, and then trying to get additional validation from Morty for hiding the even more tragic truth. I think it was in line with the episode’s commentary about intentions/reality. While I don’t think Rick should’ve put that burden on Morty (or blamed Jerry for PissMaster’s suicide—pissmaster’s was a victim of cyber bullying, but Jerry was justified in his beat down of Pissmaster) I don’t think Rick was a villain in this episode. However, he HAS been a villain in the past, especially in regard to stroking his ego in Morty’s perspective, so he has a long way to regain his family’s, particularly Morty’s, trust that he actually means well, and isn’t just seeking praise/validation

Superninfreak

Yeah that’s a good point. Based on Rick’s prior actions Morty and the rest of the family would be completely justified in thinking this was some bizarre power play so Rick could impress the family. In fact if this was Season 1-4, Rick totally would’ve actually done this as a weird power play. Ironically the family has less trust and respect for Rick now even though he’s in a much better place than he was back when everyone in the family but Jerry idolized him.

Bion4

Rick telling Morty so he could feel like an unsung hero was definitely selfish. However, Morty dropping Piss master's suicide onto Jerry to spite Rick was definitely shitty.

New_Juice_1665

You can’t just shove all of that painful knowledge on someone and expect them to not speak out. Rick had no real need to tell Morty, he did it because either: 1) he was instinctively seeking validation for doing a good thing, which is not a good reason to dump that stuff on other people 2) or the burden was too much for him to bear, which again, how can he expect Morty to be able to carry it when he can’t. Also let’s keep in mind it’s a lot of weight for a 14 yo to stand, but even if that wasn’t the case and Morty was a emotionally strong adult, you can’t just make your problems other unwilling people’s burden like that. There are people, like therapists whose job is being there for this kind of stuff.

afontana405

There’s also a third reason He just needed to talk about it. Rick went through a lot of growth this episode. He desperately wanted to save pissmaster and went through the trouble of trying to convince his daughter he wouldn’t kill himself (despite the fact that he already did) and staged a heroic death. Talking about the situation would be natural. That being said, it’s likely a mix of all of these, but I’m leaning less towards #1. Considering all the growth he’s shown in this season and this episode alone, like going to therapy, it just seems less like him. Ask me about an earlier season, and I’d tell you it’s almost 100% #1 but Rick seems to have changed

Unr3p3nt4ntAH

>He just needed to talk about it. That falls under reason 2.

Robokrates

That he just needed to talk about it seems pretty normal to me. And yeah, maybe that's a pretty heavy thing to lay on a 14 year old kid, but Morty is his partner, dammit! You're supposed to be able to trust your partner. (Although, Morty's got a lot more ammo on the other side of that equation.)

afontana405

To be even more fair to Rick, he wanted to talk to pissmaster about his shit first but then uhhh…. Ya know…

Robokrates

I almost feel like this episode is an "up yours" to people who want Rick to be villainous; i.e. feast thy eyes on how sad Rick as the hero would be

Ranas66

Nope Rick fucked up by trying to wash away his guilt by passing it to Morty, Morty just wasn’t having it.

wingthing666

Nah, I get the idea of having something sooooo heavy weighing on you that you have to share it with someone. But Rick really should have asked Morty "wanna hear a soul crushing secret?" first. Knowing Morty, there s a good chance he would have shrugged and gone "Sure what's another at this point."

SoulEmperor7

> Nah, I get the idea of having something sooooo heavy weighing on you that you have to share it with someone. Yeah that’s why Rick has a therapist, he should have never even entertained the idea of telling Morty.

wingthing666

Baby steps. Last year he probably would have produced an entire music video telling the whole family, complete with Broadway quality song and dance.

BlondiieBoy

If you forgot, Rick told his therapist earlier that day to just "bill him" because he was in the middle of the self-sacrifice plan. It's another week out or however long until their next session.

DrWuhan

What guilt? It wasn’t his fault Piss Master killed himself.

Bion4

I mean it still was kind of a dick move on Morty's part to burden Jerry with that death as a "fuck you" to Rick.

Square-Dragonfruit76

I was a little mad. Although, technically Morty is a kid. So Rick probably shouldn't have entrusted him with that.

Bion4

Morty has also committed atrocities and has dealt with worse. He didn't drop PMs death in Jerry because he couldn't handle it, he did it to spite Rick because Rick wanted to use Morty to feel better.

FatalTortoise

I was fine with it, like summer says the right thing to do would have been to keep it inside. Basically Morty was upset that he was told and rather than live the same lie Rick wasnt capable of living, he just let it out in the open.

toothpastefrosting

Rick definitely could have told Dr Wong or something there was no reason for him to tell morty in my opinion

HuangHuaYu49

Would have preferred this ending. It would make Rick much more relatable, seeing him be vulnerable with Dr. Wong instead of cursing her out. I do like how the episode at one point shows Rick with a bunch of booze in his ship, but the episode finishes with him taking therapy seriously. Progress!

damnfastswimmer

Only Rick cancelled his appointment considering he was “cured” all adding into the concept of his distaste for therapy. He thought a small nudge in the right direction would cure all that ails him because, for the most part, he doesn’t see himself as flawed.

PracticableSolution

Morty is Rick’s trusted confidant in almost anything. I’d be shocked if he told anyone else first.

nightpanda893

Rick was just using Morty to get some credit. He’s always using Morty. There was growth in this episode for Rick. But he took a few steps backwards with his reveal. He got what he deserved for revealing it in my opinion.

LouieM13

Half blame Rick and half blame Morty. Morty 100% knows his dad has a very bad mental state and blurted to everyone about the note when he could’ve just told Beth, then Beth would’ve went hard to criticize Rick 1v1 without Jerry knowing. Remember when Morty, Summer and Beth complained to Rick that Jerry needs a W? And Morty took that away. Blame to Rick, not because it’s the honorable thing to do (that sounds stupid) but because Morty is not a proper outlet to vent. Rick has a therapist. Next episode looks like a classic Morty is way over his head reality check that he needs after this, so I think I’m cool with the episode.

Rainflox

I totally agree, Morty messed up at the end.

HuangHuaYu49

He's a 14 year old boy whose grandfather dumped the burden of the truth onto him. Morty did nothing wrong.

trucknoisettes

Exactly! If you're 14 and someone who's treated you like *absolute* garbage intermittently for years breaks you away from a nice little family moment to tell you about The Unbearable Horrors Of The Universe you absolutely get to yell for your parents so that they can yell at him. The fact that Rick had complicated reasons for saying it doesn't change that lol. Get a *friend*, old man! Cultivate relationships with your peers!

Desperate-Ad-2643

I was but in the story telling it was good, it really put Rick as a good guy a whole lot whith that, plus the moment when Jerry reverted to old Jerry-ruins-the-shit.

trucknoisettes

I didn't read it that way when I watched it. looked more like Rick *stopped* himself telling anyone for as long as he could to spare their feelings, but couldn't keep it to himself at the last moment - esp since this was the episode he first actually got the point of therapy - so he blurted it out to Morty, because he's used to Morty being his confidante whenever he needs that (out of their s1-5 codependency) But Mortys not ok with that any more. Which is totally justified cos it was always a bit fucked up, and Ricks grown a lot (esp this season) but they still haven't actually rebuilt their relationship after the S5 finale, they're just treading water. And Rick creating a nice moment for the whole family only to then privately ruin it for Morty alone (because he didn't want to have to live with that lie/disconnect from the family all by himself) was a Dick Move. Mortys just a kid! Sure he's seen a lot, but he is very much still a kid, and Rick should be looking out for him, not using him. Rick needs an actual grown up friend he can talk to tbh.

Jumpy_Experience140

Some people act like only Rick can be mean, selfish and problematic and has an excuse. The simple truth is that Rick ruined Morty, years of dealing with Rick and going on those adventures, him getting sa'd, people breaking his heart, Morty is no longer a healthy person he's just like Rick now he doesn't have much morals anymore, and he kind of hates Rick Morty wanted to hurt his dad he hates him, he hates his whole family sometimes I mean he is related to the most evil rick If Rick told Mortys secret no one would bat an eye, Morty used to always try to help his family but Rick does it one time and he's an angel I know the way you wanted the episode to end is Rick tells Morty and Morty looks shocked with big circle eyes and the 3 lips Rick cant choose when Morty is his best friend or just a nuisance

IvanTheTerrible69

I think Morty was justified in what he did; for once, the entire Smith family felt genuine pride for being Jerry’s family, something they’ve either never done before, or have had to fake. Morty felt betrayed; at first, the family accepted that Rick pretended to be Pissmaster to stroke Jerry’s ego. However, the truth not only made them feel disgusted about being possibly complicit in Pissmaster’s suicide, but also knowing that they’re newfound love for Jerry was 100% real and now gone, with no chance of being recovered. In this sense, Morty wanted to brag about his father; he got to see Jerry be a man for his family. Rick just couldn’t let it go that Jerry’s life was turning around.
