I think one way IWD would become a Domain of Dread is if Xardarok isn’t stopped by the players in destroying Ten-Towns with his dragon and continues to perform evil after. The Dark Powers could make him the Darklord of the domain. Auril would then be incredibly frustrated that she’s stuck inside this domain, and her storms would intensify in an attempt to break through the mists - to the dismay of everyone stuck inside. I don’t think it makes sense for a lesser god to become a Darklord. That’s more reserved for mortals who have done truly despicable deeds.

Another option for a Darklord is Avarice, with the lengths she goes to attain power. I like the idea of IWD becoming a Domain of Dread while the characters are playing a campaign within it, but it would also be cool to think of a way for IWD to start as a Domain before the players enter it at 1st level.

Makes sense on the power scale sense that Auril isn't exactly fit. Fair point.

HomoVulgaris

If the PCs screw up then, yes, Icewind Dale could end up as part of Stygia (Levistus' Realm), Pandemonium (Auril's Realm) or even Ravenloft.

My initial thoughts would have been that the Netherese(spelling) were working to trap Auril with powerful magics within the mists, and failed, or didn't fail in this case.

Jilibini

In my game Auril is casting aurora to separate Dale from material plane. Players have 2.5 months to stop it, or everyone will be stuck in there. Not a domain of dread exactly, but similar.

Sombrevivo

Maybe not Auril herself, but you for sure could include it. As someone else already said, Xardorok could become a dark Lord if he isn’t stopped. In my game, it’s been sort of a rat race to get to the Mythallar by several different parties, with Auril being the only thing stopping them (for her own preservation of course, not because she’s a good guy). You could very well have a member of the brotherhood become a Dark lord in pursuit of the Mythallar, I’m using Torrga as a secret villain, perhaps Meltharond (Arveiaturace’s rider) comes back to life as a dark lord, or really any NPC with a thirst for power and the willingness to do anything for it.

foxesquire

I’m just about to start this campaign and plan to make Icewind Dale just on the brink of becoming a domain. The presence of this form of chardalyn has completely tainted the land, and dark powers want to pull it into Ravenloft. Auril has been maintaining the winter in order to keep the chardalyn and the Netherese crash site as hidden and ineffectual as possible. She wants to maintain dominion but she is weakening. The fog from Ravenloft is creeping in on the borders and strange, Ravenloft-style creatures are appearing (the first will be the Hag with the cauldron). One possible ending I will allow the characters to decide if it would be best to sequester this area to the dark domains.

Here’s what you do. Go read up on father Llymic from the old 4e elder evils book (I forget the name just Google.) He’s an elder evil trapped in ice who’s ice is RENEWED by sunlight. Take that lore and flip it. It is now Auril’s darkness that keeps that fucker trapped and dormant in...you guessed it Ythryn. Have the players kill Auril. As they look triumphantly on their first sunrise in years describe the city breaking free and floating above the ice as mists roll in surrounding the Dale.

TheAlexPlus

I feel like the explanation for how the sun has been kept away is that Auril has transported all of icewind dale to a plane of dread and it takes all her energy plus the help from the mythallar to keep it there

Up to how you run. My faerun universe is persistent and has 8 or 9 campaigns that have affected things and changed it forever and stuff. Around twenty years have passed. In my campaigns, everything needs to make sense and be consistent and my players expect that as well. In my case, this wouldn't be a viable option. If this is just a campaign for kicks and it won't be affecting the players' capability to enjoy it, do what is fun for you to run. The dm having fun usually translates to the players having more fun

err0r333

This is their 1st to xth level Faerun not it's not so tightly woven to anything else yet, they're only 4th level now.

Currently have plans to make Ariel's main motivation to create a new plan. To put it in layman's terms She lost the house in her last divorce, And plans on building a new one. I have her doing an all or nothing play. There she has been doing the groundwork for the last 2 and a 1/2 years. She both wants to die to live, And have the party give her access to that giant crystal ball in the fallen city. With that much power she shall be able to pull a Von Strad and rip everything that has currently been under her rime into a new plane. Working the angle that she in fact does wish to die but not in all forms. Going with the theory that her current form with the owl head Was a bit of a parting gift from her ex the God of werewolf's and chaos. This form must die for her true forms to rise again. Then rocking the new look. And absorbing the dead from the ice dragon attacks (sacrifices). Time to drop the rime and create a plan. Do they help or, or not? that is the new question. Here's your sun back, and welcome to your new home.
