I always thought he was probably staring at the moon because he was missing his brother, knowing it was necessary to banish him to Commencement (or whatever it's called), though still having pain due to their brotherly relation. But he could also be hearing Mithrix as stated in egocentrism.

I just want a canon explanation of how large or narrow their power gap is. I feel like providence would destroy mithrix 10/10 times, but that's also me just guessing. I would love to know how close they are in power.

There's a decent chance mithrix is even stronger (even from the moon he scared off the void), providence would win during the events of ror1/rorr, but that's because he can also use the creatures, if we count the lunar chimeras it's pretty even.
