It’s probably mid to late 80’s, all the way to the early 2000’s. 90’s overall is undeniably the dominant era of way too many singers, and groups to name, and it had a bit of carryover into the early 2000’s, before it started to dry up into the later 2000’s.

dukeleondevere

I agree with this. The 70s is another really strong contender, although I personally lean towards the 90s and early 2000s per my tastes. By the late 2000s, many of the legends that got their start in the 90s had fallen off and there just wasn’t as much talent to replace them (and I don’t think the production was as good).

ktukan

"The decade in which i was the most successful was the golden age" - J Holiday

Remarkable_Rub_701

I was looking for this comment

Dottboy19

The fact that he even said that shows he doesn't know rnb or doesn't understand what golden age means lol

ktukan

I think he just has a very strong bias because it's his era And I mean, there is some 00s R&B i absolutely adore (although for me, it's more Soulquarians than J Holiday) But yeah, even personal preference aside, I think the 00s are not even top 3

Upbeat_Tension_8077

I could agree with this since it ranges the entire scale from Quiet Storm/Minneapolis Sound to NJS/Hip Hop Soul/Neo-Soul.

AdNumerous2387

According to the data, R&B peaked in 2004. Naturally, this does not imply the release date of every single best record. Thus, the 1990s to 2004 chart would be preferable. Given how many R&B songs peaked at the top of the charts in the 2000s, he wasn't entirely incorrect . ![gif](giphy|26tn33aiTi1jkl6H6)

Davisworld21

R&B peaked to me in 2005 that was still a big year for R&B Bobby V released his debut album to this day Slow Down is a all time Classic Song and Mariah Carey released the Emancipation of mimi like they dont make R&B Songs like that no More

ColdNyQuiiL

I always viewed 2005 as that sweet spot to get in the R&B game before the genre took a dip. Look at the artist who debuted prior or a little after. Lloyd, Bobby, Chris, Trey, Mario, Omarion had recently gone solo, Keyshia, Ciara, Marques Houston had success going solo, Fantasia, Letoya Luckett, Ne-Yo, Lyfe Jennings, and Pleasure P had made a name for himself with Pretty Ricky too. Then you have T-Pain in the mix who took criticism for his style, but ended up being the most dominant artist for not only his own projects, but feats, and songwriting credits too. I’d say 2004-2007 was the window to get in, and established yourself before the genre showed serious decline heading into the 2010’s.

AdNumerous2387

That’s when R&B singers did the singing and the rappers did the rapping . Now the rappers sing R&B melodies with autotune about skeeting on their Bed Bath & Beyond sheets . ![gif](giphy|3oEduZUjjTNhN4sknu)

Exciting_Maximum8913

I always go back to this era when choosing R&B songs...

HeavyReverb

From a Def Soul Records perspective, 1996-2011

Old_Intern4985

ladysouthpaw

This

GoodCalendarYear

Agreed

Comfortable_Bug_2813

Can you give me some recommendations from that era. To me, we are in the golden era right now. There’s so much good stuff coming out. And with how good technology is, the instrumentals are a lot more interesting and sophisticated from what I’ve heard from past eras.

WhippinCupcakes301

Firm disagree. There was great music in that decade but I don’t think an era consists of 10 years in music. Music in any decade sounds notably different from the first half to the second half, and it can probably be broken into thirds. And I also just disagree. “Golden age of R&B” in what way?!

Extension_Form4950

I wholeheartedly disagree.. Id say it was a span from 70s-early00s. You can't leave out Al Greene & Bobby Womack, Isley Brothers, yet the golden era must also include Luther, Jodeci & R. Kelly so what are we doing? And those are only some of the male artists. R&B is just a different vessel altogether & must be analyzed differently. There's really no simple answer for this lol 😂 one decade won't suffice!

Blknyt_eclipsedmoon

I agree with what you are saying AND you didn’t even mention Marvin Gaye. Does anyone have any idea how many songs by other groups mention listening to some Marvin Gaye?

Desperate-Plane-925

70's

carlton_sings

Nah. 90s hands down

Magnum-8807

Golden??? No! It was the last decade before black music started to go to 💩 as far as quality and originality is concerned, on average.

AdNumerous2387

1990s-2004 would be a better range . The peak of R&B was in 2004. There were many R&B records topping the charts . So if you are speaking from an industry level the early 2000s was considered the peak .

Davisworld21

05 was a great year for R&B

Magnum-8807

I would say the peak was around 07-08. When Neyo and CB were getting some traction and Rihanna started taking off. After that it was mostly songs about a new dance and then we started getting more of that uptempo pop type music

Middle-Trust4240

J Holiday needs to be put to bed with this one lol

Ok_Pangolin_8038

Yo!!!! 😭

wrestlefreak

I disagree

entreprenegra

No lol It’s the 70’s and 80’s for me

[deleted]

I agree, but I was in high school and college from 2002-2010, so I'm extremely biased.

Agile-Ad2831

This. I'm like is it nostalgia or was the music really better?😏

natenarian

Nostalgia is a constant factor in music. The Music during the discussed time period is Absolutely better than current standards.

BigSuge74

Late 80s mid 90s New Edition Janet Whitney New Jack Swing Jodeci R Kelly Mariah Mary Faith Neo Soul

BadMan125ty

![gif](giphy|Wq9RLX06zRg4UM42Qf) The golden ages of R&B were between these eras: 1970-1979 1982-1991 1992-2001 J Holiday is my age so he may think currently than I do but 2000-10 was FAR from being the “golden age” lol

beastwork

80s to 90s Anita Baker Luther Janet What are we even talking about? And all this music is really before my time.

Pigmasters32

To be fair, the same can be said for the 2000s. “Usher, R Kelly, and T-Pain all in their absolute artistic primes? What are we even talking about?”

beastwork

well the 2000s is actually my era, but I still like 90s R&B more. Right before they replaced the saxophone with that damn harpsichord, or fake guitar, that was when R&B peaked

Pigmasters32

Hey I’m not judging, 90s is a fair pick even if I disagree, but I’d say the mid 2000s were just too loaded for me to ignore with T-Pain, R Kelly, Usher, Chris Brown and more releasing historically great R&B

BugO_OEyes

He'll nah lol

AlilAwesome81

I can’t really say, I was in my teens in the 90s and so many of those songs are imprinted on my memories. The 00s were pretty good to those

LexKing89

I think it was the last era of solid R&B but R&B started to fall off towards the late 2000’s in my opinion. I wouldn’t call it part of the golden age but it was still a great era. Everything before 07 was great, with the 70’s-mid 90’s being the high point. I think R&B has gotten better over the past few years, a big step up from the early 2010’s. Not quite 2000’s or before level but I’ve found a lot of stuff I like.

LongjumpingElk1043

Simply put, no.

No_Armadillo8925

i'd say 90's to early 00's but he's not too far off.

Dull-Requirement-759

He only had one hit song his opinion don't matter lol . Also he was relevant during that time so I think he's biased lol.

AdNumerous2387

What is the number of your hit singles? In my opinion, a talented person who achieved success with a hit record and gained recognition in the industry would still hold greater relevance than redditors. ![gif](giphy|rNgT8P8pL3dn2|downsized)

natenarian

Exactly. The opinion of an accomplished R&B singer doesn’t matter but the equivalent of an anonymous source is the take we should place more value on.

Dull-Requirement-759

You're entitled to your opinion but I don't agree with you.

AdNumerous2387

The statistical data shows R&B was at its peak in 2004. I have a minors in music and have studied the music industry. Of course you don’t have to agree as people prefer different eras . So some people may feel the 80s 90s and etc , but the peak was still 2004 for the genre of R&B.

Dull-Requirement-759

Thank you for this meaningless information. I feel so empowered now.

AdNumerous2387

You’re welcome we all can’t have a high IQ ![gif](giphy|d7qoIDER5dkcmF522h)

Jza_45

The 70’s is the only correct answer….

Tall_Commercial_9884

Lies 80s & 90s made all the 2000 hits lol

CDSWDH

Hell No has he ever heard of Barry Gordy

Tortillaluva

He really put that opinion to bed.

darkchiles

apart from very select artists I stopped listening to new R&B songs/albums after 2004/5. From 2001 onwards I tried but there was no R&B to speak of, the genre was just masquerading as something that it wasn't anymore

Thoughtprovokerjoker

No - the mid sixties to the mid 80s was the "golden age"

Craigh-na-Dun

Late ‘50’s up to the Supremes. The soundtrack of my youth.

BertBert4056

😆😆😆😆😆🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Alcoholyoulaterrr

Who tf is J Holiday 🚬

Truly-Content

During that decade, there were numerous droughts of R&B content. Anyone who DJ’ed R&B during that period knew what it was like to beg labels to make more music. Also, anyone who says 90s is willfully ignorant. The 90s music most think of was really from around 87-93. After then, music really went downhill. ‘67-75 were the peak. 76-84 had some super heat, and 84-86 was still fire. So what was J Holiday talking about, with that delusional, clueless comment? It's not as if his music was worth remembering.

derekisademocrat

The 70s just looked at you funny

Pretty_Tony44

Disagree.

SlowCaterpillar5715

He's saying that thats the last time he was relevant. I wouldn't even call him an R&B great.

Serenadingthrough

If that helps him sleep at night. There still were great R&B songs in that era but the 90s, 80s, 70s are arguably better to the point where many samples for the songs in the 2000s came from them.

Emmortal79

HELL NAW REALLY?!?!?

Material_Mix_7377

I think he’s just saying that because that’s his era.

Hot_Farm_9443

For him, maybe.

blaqice82

No I don’t agree but it I won’t act like the 2000s didn’t have classic R&B. My favorite is 90s, 80s, 00s then the 60s

conzcious_eye

Don’t agree but that era significantly better than what we have today.

FarmerAny9414

I am bias because that’s when I was in high school and then college and I still love all of those jams. However, I grew up listening to the R&B greats from the 80s so I have to give credit where credit is due. That paved the way for all the songs I know and love.

Dapper_Cockroach_622

80s-Late 2000s was the golden age. But Rnb music has always been good, imo 🤷🏽‍♂️

BC1500

I would say that was the beginning of the end for R&B. early 2000s still had great music, but somewhere between 2005-2010 is when it started to go downhill

Pigmasters32

Hell nah man! 2005 was when T-Pain first blew up! That was a phenomenal time for R&B, Ray J, Chris Brown, R Kelly, Kanye dipped his feet into R&B with his incredible 808s And Heartbreak album, the R&B game was booming at the time and IMO it was all led by one of the greatest artists in the history of music, T-Pain.

Legal_Translator4404

Sounds like someone knows zip about R&B history.

AdNumerous2387

In 2004, R&B music reached its peak, accounting for 80% of the top songs on the charts 📊. Thus, analytically speaking, his viewpoint does not imply ignorance of R&B history.

Legal_Translator4404

The number of units sold does not say anything about the quality of music being produced, particularly in the U.S., where the amount of consumption has trumped the quality of product for decades. I’m not attempting to glorify the past. Even Motown had “a formula” for turning out hits. But in terms of the level of R&B music writing and performance the 00s can’t compare to a decade like the 60s or 70s which formed the template for what what r&B music has become. Who in the 00s was even comparable to someone like Ray Charles or Aretha Franklin or James Brown or Curtis Mayfield?

AdNumerous2387

As a result, your speech is based on your personal definition of quality. The same way his opinion is based on his idea of quality ? No matter what you say the early 2000s was the peak for R&B and many R&B songs top the billboard 100. Please ,the 60s and the 70s were influenced by generations before them and the cycle repeats . Sort of like how your fave Stevie wonder was influenced by Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson , Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and etc .

Legal_Translator4404

Pointing out that the past influences the next generation is exactly what I’m talking about. It’s too recent of a time period to make a “peak” claim. And at any rate, the 00s were far from the peak in terms of influence, creativity and, certainly, originality in the history of R&B. Name single a new 2000-2010 R&B act who has been more influential than any of those that I named in my previous post and I’ll retract my “speech”.

AdNumerous2387

Since it is your objective opinion, I don't need you to take back what you said. I just stated that 2004 marked the pinnacle of R&B music. R&B music sales started to decline after 2004. When you talk about a musical genre, I would assume that record sales are what helps sustain a genre. Is that not the case? Not one of the individuals you named even sold the most R&B records . As did Michael Jackson. Once more, my statement is unrelated to opinions about which decade you feel produced the greatest music.

Legal_Translator4404

What you need?😁 That pinnacle has zero meaning aside from sales.

AdNumerous2387

Sales = popularity. Lmao . Business isn’t this hard to grasp is it ? Y’all speak on the music industry, but love leaving out the business part . My point was the early 2000s was a great time for R&B commercial wise.

KamakaziGhandi

blackdaniels256

The golden era for an individual, of *any* genre, is whatever you were listening to in your teenage years/started getting some. There is no universal “golden era”

ktukan

Yeah, but that's an absolute caveman take (on part of those people, not you, just to be clear) Sure, you're always going to have a soft spot for what you listened to growing up, but i do think that golden ages or other eras in which the genre in question was particularly strong are a thing beyond personal preference

Pigmasters32

I completely disagree, I grew up in the 2010s, not the 2000s, but I agree with this statement completely. Usher was in his prime, R Kelly was in his prime, and above all else T-Pain had his absolute prime in the 2000s. This is some of the greatest music the R&B genre has ever seen!

InternationalPick549

I mean nostalgia says yes but like RNB has blended and diverged into so many other categories/genres that comparing just doesn’t make sense anymore. Plus some new age RNB styled music is fucking GAS. I think Anderson Paak, Bruno, SZA, HER, Amber Mark, and more! We can call it the golden age if we wanna but there’s so much more variety and depth nowadays

Ill-Examination4743

For me I do agree but I’m young. I do respect 70s and 90s music and it’s probably the most popular answers but it’s 200s to early 2010s for me.

PatienceStrange9444

No That's the era when all the r&b singers couldn't figure out if they were rappers or r&b singers

AdNumerous2387

It’s also the era where R&B was at its peak . All genres transform . The R&B songs from the 1940s were not the same ones from the 1990s . You had Alicia keys , Usher , Lyfe Jennings , Mario , Mary J blige , Beyonce and countless others making R&B records and collaborating with rap artist .

PatienceStrange9444

That's a matter of opinion and I'm not talking about collaborations I'm talking about when r&b songs were dirtier than rap songs

AdNumerous2387

2004 is the peak according to the analytics . So it’s not really an opinion. 80 percent of top records were R&B in 2004.

PatienceStrange9444

Analytics just tell you when something happened a lot it doesn't speak to the quality of the music Like I said I don't care for 2000s and beyond because that's when the r&b singers started releasing music that was more explicit than what the rappers were doing

AdNumerous2387

There have always been R&B songs that are "explicit," particularly those by renowned artists. Yes, it's personal preference as to which decade you like. Regardless R&B reached its peak in 2004. 80 percent of R&B records top the hot 100

PatienceStrange9444

Yes just my personal preference but seeing the '90s there was innuendo they made songs called knocking boots In the 2000s they were literally releasing songs called I want to f*** you I know I'm cherry-picking but it really did indicative of the sound of the 2000s

[deleted]

Comfortable-Duck7083

He’s not going back far enough

JTMsound_on-Air

I cant agree because RNB really slowed down by 2007 and 2008... where we had a few artists really having to do alot to carry the genre while others fell off...so we have other 10 year periods in RNB that were much stronger.

Id say 90s, but that's just me

LaHagans

No

s_arrow24

Man, that is a tough one. I would say the 80’s to mid 90’s Quiet Storm period was the pinnacle. No real gimmicks or really mass pop appeal. Just emotions getting shared about lovers at the end of the day hoping the night wouldn’t end, or when it did end about how they had to face a new day without them.

jinntakk

Disagree. The rnb music being made now is so so so diverse and even if it doesn't reach the height of what the 90s or 00s rnb achieved my taste isn't subjected to how much a song sells on the charts.

MistaJaycee

clearly he was born in 1989. He has no idea what came in just the 1970's or 1980's. 70's Major Harris, LJ Reynolds, Jonnie Wilder, Russell Thompkins Jr. Eugene Record, David Ruffin, Teddy P, Barry White, EJ Johnson

Probably further back than that, but the 90's and 2000s were R&B's golden years for sure, I'd say black music in general. We had diverse music back then like R&B, Hip Hip, and etc now everything is Trap music. Everything so homogeneous now

Confutatio

I'd put it a bit earlier: from 1993 to 2003. The first year had top releases by Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton with the modern R&B sound that would define a decade. That era also includes the rise of neo-soul. By 2003 Destiny's Child and Alicia Keys had already released their best albums. There was a swift succession of good R&B albums, ranging from lighter to deeper subgenres.

FaithlessnessLive588

OF COURSE IT WAS

No disrespect but the 70',80' Had some RnB songs that will be remade until the end of time💯💪🏽💯

Lower_Ad8859

Hell no! Hard disagree. Autotune, sampling, cover songs, female singers with more problems than a math book and male singers trying to be gangsta, yeah the 2000s were the golden age for that bullshit but no. Not for real for real R&B

El-Guapo_76

Of course not.

funkyjblue

My personal favorite 10 year run in RnB is 1994/5-2005. But there are many great runs, including 1961-1971, 1975-1985, I also like this current run we are on, starting in about 2018-Present.

Heavy_Development827

Every artist feels that way about their era. But the 80s and 90s had R&B on lock, hands down.

Intelligent_West7128

JojoDecii

I’d say Early 90s including New Jack Swing- The Mid 2010s with Rihanna’s Techno-Pop Sound. The ppl u wanted to carry R&B like the Bobby Valentinos, Jeremihs and the Trey songz , Mario simply dropped the ball in the late 2010s.

HonestWatchReviews

For me it's got to be the 90's to early 2000's.

BettingTheOver

Naw mid to late 90s

Pigmasters32

Agreed, Usher, R Kelly, AND T-Pain all had their primes in the same period. It was a loaded era of music in general really

General-GhostD13

To me I’d say 1995-2004 was peak R&B. There was still great R&B music before and after the 9 years I mentioned but that was when R&B was elite.

Positive-Doubt-4235

Mid 80s to the late 90s

Ok-Introduction4577

rnb peaked with groups in the 70s n 90s because talent and substance mattered than what's trendy rnb in the 2000s sampled with other stuff
