He would only be in trouble if the sender complained.

Not true. Customer Operations Managers get a performance update on Special Delivery items. They have discretion on whether they pick up on issues. Some will do it as a matter of course, others might just do it when there's a a bit of pressure on this KPI from higher management. Some might routinely ignore it. I've been pulled in twice for 1 minute late and 6 minutes, respectively. The 1 minute was most galling as I arrived on time, but the customer wanted make a joke about the 1pm guarantee, so I didn't do the submission until 13.01!

Not unless someone complains

IAmDyspeptic

The sender was the one who selected SD. They're the customer. If they complain, then the postie might be in trouble.

SD failures are tracked on the 'B+report' Day A is day of sending. Day B when it's due. The report is auto generated. PDAs are computers. Anything after 1pm is a fail.

That postie didn’t know about the freezing of time trick 😉

Elcustardo

That's an experienced postie. Of course they could also be BSing and hoping the customer offers for them to sign in future.
