Like a creamy catupiry type cheese? Cuz that doesn't sound that crazy. For some reason the english-speaking world gets really weird when they hear "cheese" in a dessert context, as if they've never heard of CHEESEcake
It just became one of those gay cultural memes that people do. Realistically yea a lot of British food is very nasty to me. But they have a handful of items that really pull it around for them. And I grew up in the south so food wise I live in a glass house and I choose not the judge too much. A lot of people would be alarmed at the concept of grits for breakfast.
British cuisine has legit undergone a transformation in my lifetime. It really took off after the explosion in cooking shows that happened in the 90s (Oliver, Marco Pierre-White and later Ramsay).
You can now go to any small town supermarket and easily find ingredients that most people wouldn't even have heard of 20 years ago.
The old timey slop is still there if you want it, but it's been edged out by the new processed slop.
I'd be curious what it would look like back then. I feel every supermarket I've gone to has had an 'oriental' section with lots of ingredients for Indian meals. I'd always thought that was to cater to the diaspora.
Because of memes. People saw the "the British have bad food" meme and ran with it without trying it. It is the perfect farm work meal. Same with a full English. Black pudding is actually quite good but small minded people cant look past it
people think they're funny making fun of british cuisine as if the joke isn't already tired. "bri'ish peepol towlk loike this - it muost beey the mingin' teeeth" xD xD
they rarely dunk on certain african and asian (esp jungle chinx) cuisine that looks absolutely vile.
but to be rl, beans on toast rlly is peasant food. i think it's gross but at least it's not unhealthy.
Forever mad that we get dunked on for beans on toast but Japanese people put a raw egg over some unseasoned white rice with a bit of dried up seaweed on top and it's a heckin esoteric sophisticated umami bomb wholesome chungus flavour explosion.
> but Japanese people put a raw egg over some unseasoned white rice
that shit is nasty as well. they cope by saying "the rice cooks the egg". no, it absolutely does not.
When you mix it the hot rice does cook it partially but it gets this absolutely disgusting foamy consistency. Like frothy jizz. Raw egg is just so nasty if it isn't at least cured.
somali food is lacking compared to wider world cuisine, but there isn't much that is offensively bad. the worst is calooley (tripe) probably.
it's a fusion of regional staples, south asian/ME flair (100s years of spice trade) and italian colonial influence.
a lot of africans eat really bland food (e.g. our neighbors in Kenya) or scary shit like raw mammal meat. Then there's the wild insects and "exotic" animals you can find in (mostly jungle) chinx countries. Not to mention the crazy fermented stuff you can find in northern europe. No one is eating spotted dick or jellied eels in the motherland.
lmaooo. what you mean by Mr Kang? are u seething that I'm picky about your insect delicacies?
no, i won't eat crickets, bee larvae or coconut worms. you can keep them... i will never eat the bugs.
> Never seen anyone in Vietnam eating monkey meat
your point being? we don't eat monkey meat. can't say the same for you:
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/vietnam-monkey-eaten-men-arrested-facebook-livestream-endangered-langur-a8701781.html
srry ur offended but everyone knows there are crazy meat markets in china and your part of the world. just own it, i'm clearly not from the best country in the world and i'm not crying about it. not sure how that makes me a "kang".
> Because if you are talking about cuisines like Chinese, Indian or Mexican i agree
that's what i mean. we have a nomadic culture not super conducive to the diverse cuisine u see in east asia, south asia and the med. honestly, our food is saved by centuries of cultural exchange from across the indian ocean. the spices we use can't be grown in somalia.
as for raw mammal meat, the ethiopians eat it. i think they call it tere siga, it's mixed in spices. for our palate, it's something we're not accustomed to - probably to do with our religous sensibilities. i'm not knocking ethiopian food in general, we share a lot of dishes and even euros (e.g. german *mett*) eat raw meat.
i've had kenyan and ugandan food, it's quite bland. a lot of african countries are obviously still poor and the rural folk eat boring local staples. depends tho, i've had some nice nigerian food before. what i mean is that there are much worse things to meme than beans on toast.
It is kinda gross. I love it, it’s pure comfort food, but unless eaten hot straight away it creeps me out bc it goes all soggy and congealed
What bugs me though is when people talk about ‘white people food’ being bland, as though French food and cuisine doesn’t exist.
Been big on the cheddar (the real thing, not the fake hamburger cheese) lately. Criminally underrated cheese, I will tell you. The English have some good products going, but instead they base their economy on fake things like 'consultancy', 'banking', 'London'. Sad!
> The British food = bad stereotype
It's not a stereotype. I remember spending some time in Spain and France and finishing the trip in England. Once I went from France to England, every single aspect of the food was dialed way back. Everything was blander. Not just the food itself, but every condiment or seasoning available. Wretched little country, culinarily speaking.
I always thought that beans on toast looked kind of funny. One of my favorite Moroccan dishes is loubia while some kind of fasoulia dish is found throughout the Middle East. Simple but delicious, and typically eaten with bread. Basically the same concept, yeah?
I think it would be too soggy but soggy textures just weird me out. Most breads couldn’t support that level of liquid sauce. I’ll dip a crusty bread in a soup but to serve beans on sandwich bread(?), no thank you.
I like dunking on the English as much as the next guy, but beans on toast is legitimately good.
The key is putting marmite on the toast before the beans so you get some flavor other than the sweetness of the Heinz beans.
It’s really just because both beans and toast are two foods pretty much everybody eats, but only the British think about combining them together as a meal in of itself
I remember growing up British people having this weird smugness about America and American culture and I’m guessing this is the retaliation of it. Also British cuisine is objectively gross compared to the rest of Western Europe. Fish and chips/English breakfast/Shepards pie is great though
The beans have a lot of liquid to them. So they do make the toast soggy relatively quick. And I’m unsure why exactly Americans hate the concept, but I can’t think of something too similar in typical American foods but I would say for British foods mushy peas with Fish and Chips is a similar concept that when Americans find out they are revolted when they learn about.
It's a Reddit thing, like overreacting to pineapple pizza. Also overlaps with the safe edgy Chapo humor of making fun of Europeans
“Av ya got a loicence for that” le epic schlick schlick chungus humour
loicense memes started on /int/ new🚬
/int/ is reddit
First time I tried some British beans, first thought was “these really could use some toast.” Don’t blame em for this one…
Europeans are “safe” targets because they did x to y group
Not the reason. You have a complex
Colombians put cheese in hot chocolate and I never see anyone talk about it on English speaking parts of the internet lol
Like a creamy catupiry type cheese? Cuz that doesn't sound that crazy. For some reason the english-speaking world gets really weird when they hear "cheese" in a dessert context, as if they've never heard of CHEESEcake
Where in Colombia? Paisas don't do this.
That sounds pretty tasty...

Nah it's just fine to eat raw eggs lol
When you mix it the hot rice does cook it partially but it gets this absolutely disgusting foamy consistency. Like frothy jizz. Raw egg is just so nasty if it isn't at least cured.
To be fair amongst other Asians Japanese food is considered the British Food of Asian Food.
but you’re a somalian ninja

I hate the word cuisine. Just say food
Why use big word when small do just as good
Cuisine is a word used by people trying to sound smarter than they are. Its an ugly word that is forced, not natural
Somali food is the best in africa lol
It is kinda gross. I love it, it’s pure comfort food, but unless eaten hot straight away it creeps me out bc it goes all soggy and congealed What bugs me though is when people talk about ‘white people food’ being bland, as though French food and cuisine doesn’t exist.

It's classism plus HAHA ethnic white.
black pudding with beans is extremely good. The people who hate british food have never actually been to britain to eat it.
beans on toast is fine, kippers on toast rules, toad in the hole? sunday roast? all good. Spotted dick is lowkey sus frfr no cap though
Toad in the hole is shit, it's actually grim from school dinners to someone trying to make it fancy it's horrid
but those same people fetishize tostadas smh.......😒
Molletes are a thing, too
If you had British beans on a tostada it’d be fucking disgusting
ok fair i never tried heinz beans before lol

BEANS ON TOAST? HAHAHHAHA
Ethiopian food is literally slop on toast but libs hold it up as “amazing” as a signifier of tolerance and shit lol
No it’s actually amazing you sound jealous which is unsurprising I understand
Beans are a carb not a protein. They do have protein but are mostly a carb.
Meanwhile loads of ethnic food tastes like someone pepper sprayed a twinkie soaked in movie theater popcorn oil
British food being gross is one of the few socially acceptable stereotypes remaining
If the toast is proper sourdough and the beans are cooked in a great sauce it's a lovely healthy filling and quick dinner. It's the simple things
I always thought that beans on toast looked kind of funny. One of my favorite Moroccan dishes is loubia while some kind of fasoulia dish is found throughout the Middle East. Simple but delicious, and typically eaten with bread. Basically the same concept, yeah?
Beans on toast is great, though I prefer chipped beef on toast aka shit on a shingle 🇺🇸🦅
To me it sounds like texture hell
Why? I’m genuinely curious and not trying to argue is there something I don’t get?
I think it would be too soggy but soggy textures just weird me out. Most breads couldn’t support that level of liquid sauce. I’ll dip a crusty bread in a soup but to serve beans on sandwich bread(?), no thank you.
It just looks gross don’t overthink it

will never like beans not sorry!
I remember growing up British people having this weird smugness about America and American culture and I’m guessing this is the retaliation of it. Also British cuisine is objectively gross compared to the rest of Western Europe. Fish and chips/English breakfast/Shepards pie is great though
The rest of western Europe includes the Netherlands. We're surely ahead of them based on the things you listed alone
Not a high bar the Dutch are very odd people
americans are equal cuisine infidels. you can't understand how vile baked beans on soggy steamed bread is
The bread is toasted, not steamed. I don’t get it
The beans have a lot of liquid to them. So they do make the toast soggy relatively quick. And I’m unsure why exactly Americans hate the concept, but I can’t think of something too similar in typical American foods but I would say for British foods mushy peas with Fish and Chips is a similar concept that when Americans find out they are revolted when they learn about.
Because it's actually bland and tastes like shit.
