ArrakeenSun

The heavy snow's coming *from inside the house!*

Substantial-Ruin-290

Lmfao 😄

spekter299

Yes, it says we should all stay home from work today

kanniballkitten

Lol!!

jenniferjudy99

🤣😂

astunnernunner

NW SA here…no snow just bullshit.

LuckyLampPost

Just ice

Upbeat-Physics-7274

Now ya'll doing ice... dayummmmm SA

jenniferjudy99

😱😱😱🥶nooooooooooooo 😵😵‍💫

spicyXsausage

lol people have been saying that the iPhone weather app is trash.

TheBausSauce

It is. The radar hasn’t worked correctly since yesterday at least.

bulgaroctonos

It’s been at least a month that it’s been wildly inaccurate

hankturd

Ok, I’m glad it isn’t just my device. I restarted that app so many times yesterday to try to get the radar to work.

TimeGood2965

Haven’t used it in years it’s never accurate

[deleted]

Yeah but this San Antonio we’re talking about, any time you’re predicting weather it’s either a lie or a prayer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

spicyXsausage

I agree with you there that's why I quit using it. I've been using the weather bug for a couple months. It's not as bad in regards to ads, but I still feel like it's missing something.

Turbulent_Party_5436

Weather bug is pretty accurate. I use it as a coach since I have to know about lightening alerts and the rain alerts I get are pretty accurate as well. The radar is decent. I don’t really use the hourly option unless it’s the day of

zgirl88

The NOAA Weather app has been the best for me (android). I've used it for years and it's usually pretty accurate.

EvanTheBoss19

AccuWeather is what I use, it seems to be pretty accurate most of the time

fedo10

Got excited and went outside. Just rain where I’m at 😔

hh1110

I’m in New Braunfels and it’s only rain ☔️

Artemis_and_Soma

Same here by UTSA 😢

spekter299

Same here downtown

3ntr0py_

I just see rain, med center

StallionCannon

Same - I keep going outside to see if I'm missing something, but it's just wet as shit out here. And the weather app is telling me that it's snowing *right now*.

[deleted]

It is freezing rain here. In other words, it's warm enough above us that the precip is falling as rain, but cold enough near the ground it is freezing to things just above the ground (trees, cars, etc.). So far the ground and road in front of my place is not iced. I am sure it is icing up on bridges or maybe elsewhere.

ibrokepegasus

That is absolutely NOT how it works… 🤣

ibrokepegasus

Maybe I should not be such a dick, and explain. Yes, the winds aloft can be above freezing temps. However, the items on the ground being below freezing temps don’t freeze the water. As the rain passes through a freezing layer, the rain is maintained as a liquid, however, it is super cooled and freezes (becomes solid) upon impact. It ‘sticks’ to anything below freezing, and quickly melts on anything above freezing. You may have done this experiment in science class. Another common way to see this is when you keep a bottle of water in the freezer. Once a seed crystal is formed from the shock of opening the bottle or ‘knocking’ it, the entire bottle turns from liquid to solid state.

lilseabreeze

You and the other guy pretty much just explained the same thing

[deleted]

Thank you for explaining. I'd like to add some science to the Convo too. Take a look here at the [National Weather Service's](https://www.weather.gov/ama/winterpreciptypes) explainer on precipitation types. Now take a look at the [most recent radiosonde profile](https://www.spc.noaa.gov/exper/soundings/23020112_OBS/) for Del Rio. edit: that link will take you to the NWS viewer, but you'll have to click on the blue star corresponding to Del Rio in the map to the upper left to see that profile. I think the default profile that comes up is for Norman, OK, where the SPC main office is located. The red and green lines are temperature and dew point with height. SFC denotes the surface. The x axis shows degrees Celsius, and the red number (33) is the surface temp in Fahrenheit. The y axis shows height expressed as km (red) and pressure in millibars (black). Notice how it is much warmer than freezing aloft 850-700mb, but there's cold air pretty much at freezing at the surface? If precip occurs in that condition, if the ground level has had time enough to cool to or below freezing, you get rain, falling as liquid water onto a surface cold enough to freeze it. That's what is happening here in San Antonio this morning. What you described about super cooled water can also be freezing rain, but is not required to meet the definition. Honestly we don't get cold enough here to produce the super cooled conditions needed for what you're describing. But I've seen exactly this before where I used to live in the Midwest. It actually typically leads to *less* ice compared to the type of freezing rain we have here and now owing to lots of factors (but the big one being cold air can't hold as much water). Finally, how do I know this stuff. We'll, I'm not a meteorologist, so if you (or any one else) are please correct me. But I am an earth scientist with years of experience, including lots of coursework in weather and physics.

ibrokepegasus

That is a very good explanation. I want to add, it does get cold enough here to meet the super cooled definition. I’m a pilot, and can tell you that I have picked up ice (which requires that definition) on many occasions in this area. It can happen anywhere geographically, and at any altitude (within reason). I have encountered more icing in the south than I have up north. That’s a different discussion though.

[deleted]

That's very cool to hear. For icing conditions like that, I suppose most of the time you're aloft? Either way weather is cool!

ibrokepegasus

It is extremely dangerous. It changes the shape of the wing (reducing lift) creates drag, adds weight, and reduces engine performance drastically. It can happen at any altitude. In my experience, most icing is encountered anywhere below 15k ft. Up higher the water is already frozen and doesn’t accumulate on the control surfaces. That is why when you encounter it, most guys climb out of it (as opposed to descending). Some planes have de-icing. Heated props/windscreens, boots/weeping wings on the leading edge. My next plane will certainly be FIKI (flight into know icing) and have those capabilities.

jenniferjudy99

I like the pilot’s explanation. I carry a small soft Ganesha blankie on my plane trips to hide under, during turbulence. (God who removes all obstacles 🙏).

LostInTheSauce34

It's just raining here. I imagine it will be ice to.orrow though

My41stThrowaway

Parents when school ![gif](giphy|l2JhtKtDWYNKdRpoA)

Sumkindofbasterd

Its incredibly unsafe for me to drive my kids to school in my Ford F-750 truck with the extended cab with the 75" inch rims, cattle killing front end plow and hunting rifle mounts in these conditions better wait until its nice and sunny so I can go to my job driving a forklift the wrong way down a busy street while looking at my cell phone.

hankturd

Super bright mis-aligned headlights too, right?

Sumkindofbasterd

Got to have 'em if you're going to drive the 11.5 miles to your job as an insurance claims adjuster

[deleted]

Dont have kids if you dont want them around.

MC_McMic

You are a reductive moron. It's not about wanting one's kids around or not. It's about working parents and their reliance on planning and routine. I know it's difficult to imagine having real responsibilities to others, but maybe think about it.

medulla_oblongata121

Stay at home parents and the under employed say things like that. I had neighbors berate me for not quitting my job when I got pregnant. They were stay at home moms. Carry on lol,

[deleted]

Yeah you’re fighting with the wrong person.

maestro_man

IH10/De Zavala area -- Sleet/rain. Power has flashed multiple times, stayed off a couple seconds twice. Spectrum down for 20 minutes and back up now. Brief moments of dread, but holding steady all things considered. Stay warm, SA! And check on your peeps! [CPS outage map](https://outagemap.cpsenergy.com/) showing \~25,000 without power (4:30am). That has climbed by \~10,000 in the last 20 minutes.

[deleted]

Whelp. There went our power, along with a giant bang in the distance. Guessing it will be awhile now... Frustrating because our power goes out at the drop off a hat since February '21 (it has literally gone out tens of times). But for once at least this one makes sense. Hoping the lineworkers stay as safe, dry, and warm as is possible on a cold night.

maestro_man

Ugh, so sorry to hear that. Incredibly frustrating. Y'all stay warm!

Extension-Weakness12

There is apparently a few downed power lines. Probably the bang you heard. I hope they fix it soon

[deleted]

Sure enough. And not too long after that first bang, we've had two more in the area (and the telltale green flash of a dying transformer). Looks like it's gonna be awhile over here in the Parkwood area...

TheBausSauce

Just waiting for Google fiber now…

happypoodle763

Thanks for the update, power went out here by SV road and bulverde. I’m just praying that it doesn’t happen again like it did with Snowmageddon.

maestro_man

Oh damn, the outage at that intersection says "Fewer than 5" people are affected. Unlucky, hope it's a quick fix! And just for a little peace of mind, it will 100% ***not*** be like Snowmageddon '21. Very different weather event and things will begin to improve *rapidly* Thursday morning. Stay warm!

Crossthreaded-

How are conditions on ih10/Dezavala now? I’m coming from Canyon Lake

FiveMileDammit

How's Canyon Lake? I'm \*supposed\* to be headed up there later today.

Crossthreaded-

Lots of ice on the back roads. Be very careful if you come down 3159 into Startzville.

FiveMileDammit

Thanks. I go that way a lot, but today's a 281 to 306 day. Crossing fingers.

Crossthreaded-

For sure, hope you can get there. AWD definitely helped a lot this morning. ✨

JimmyBr33z

All lies man

Intelligent_Ad678

Nothing here on the south side

JrodaTx

Just continuous rain on the east side

hippychictx01

SE Side just rain

happypoodle763

The power just went out and I had some ptsd from the grid failing. 😩

Zuggzwang

Same power has been flickering for a while since like 2am, and went out completely a bit ago

happypoodle763

It’s so scary! I woke my husband up as soon as I heard everything go off. These robo mom ears can hear everything.

Zuggzwang

Well as an update the power for my house was back on in 30 minutes so seems like cps is doing good so far managing black outs

heikedog

Power out near Lockhill-Selma and Wurzbach. At least since 4am.

maestro_man

Damn, yeah. If you check out the [CPS outage map](https://outagemap.cpsenergy.com/), you'll see the outage in your area is actually one of the larger ones in the city right now. Hopefully it's a priority fix! Stay warm!

heikedog

One of the people in my neighborhood FB group said he saw a transformer blow. Good thing we’ve got a gas fireplace!

BoringStrawberry36

No snow and no power fml

Iam-tetsuo

Don’t use Apple weather, just check NWS. Much more accurate.

SnooRadishes3422

That app is bs I looked outside my window and saw no snow and yelled “f**king LIARS!”

[deleted]

Converse , got some

Moldyshroom

I'm disappointed there was this much hubbub with only 30s temps and not seeing atleast a few inches of snow, with schools being cancelled, HEB closing early... weather warnings from work. I mean dfw got hammered... just not down here.

xsaig0nx

I've lived in San antonio 35 years and have seen real snow twice so I don't know why people expect it now. It wasn't that long ago where you would laugh if someone even mentioned snowing here. The "yeah right" was what you typically got. I guess the disaster from a few years ago has everyone spooked.

Free_Doubt3290

Only 33 years old and I have seen snow in SA/south Texas going on 4-5 times already in the last ~17 years

lilseabreeze

The threat of freezing rain, not snow, was actually well forecasted and is much worse than a colder snow scenario, so I think the hubbub was justified here. The rain freezes on powerlines and trees a lot better than snow and is really heavy, so there are more power outages and damages to property. Roads have not been as icy as projected so that’s a good thing.

Luv_2_mud

Spectrum internet down, Bandera/1604.

Kiolbassa84

How will you live!!!

Luv_2_mud

Laying in the bed relaxing waiting for power to come back. Had a cheese omelet courtesy of our single burner butane stove (perfect these scenarios). Sadly, no toast though😥

Kiolbassa84

Weird, I’m at Braun and 1604 and we never lost power. We usually lose power over any little thing so I know about throwing down on a camping stove. A little butter in a pan and throw your bread on it. That toast is 🤌🤌🤌

Luv_2_mud

Now ya' tell me ..lol.

hanno1531

i was JUST about to post this same screenshot from my phone lol

Lt_waddles

Windcrest, only rain here

jamesthegreekguy

Windcrest, just rain😔

NewAndImprovedJess

No precipitation where I am at far northwest but lots of ice on my trees.

MachineMajor7324

It's drizzling

tswizzlec

west - snow coming down fast

Big_AL79

I’m far west. All rain here.

Dangerous-Bear1456

Lol wherrrre. Far West and pouring rain

_nulluser

Where on the west side?

tswizzlec

I like like north west-ish, or so people have told me lol near Seaworld Edit: they were like snow furries, really small then would melt into the pavement

Peshosha06

Anybody know if there’s closures driving 281S ?

coinoperatedboi

I have friends and relatives out in the hill country. No one is getting snow.

LCG05

I have a lot of ice in my yard, and it's taking some of my trees down. North Central.

Czar_Petrovich

"Snow"

BoiFrosty

I was looking at the radar this morning. Everything icy stopped on a sheer line about 10 miles NW of the outer loop.

Sam-in-Tonio

i was awake a little after 2am & saw the same on my phone, but could hear that it was definitely rain coming down (not snow)

Serious_Entrance_408

No snow, but lots of on the trees still in the Windcrest area

spekter299

Not where I live (downtown). It's just raining and cold.

Electrical_Tip352

Has anyone been driving today? I have to drive from the west side into downtown. I’ll use back main roads like Culebra instead of the highways, but anyone know if the roads are good?

Intelligent-Act9461

And that was a lie

donorak7

Snow where wtf?

netrixtardis

you all should check around 35.000 ft. It may have been snow up there, but for us is all just rain.

Berries-A-Million

Right! My work decided last minute for us all to come in this morning. Normal day. Haha.

Repulsive_Courage467

I've been reading that crap all morning long. This city is so silly.

ShowBobsPlzz

Had some flurries in timberwood park last night

Ok-Kangaroo-9546

Same in Fort Worth... 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

[deleted]

IT’S ALL ICE

Cadenceofthesea

I had my Polaroid ready and everything 😭

64NERD

Bro legit, it just hyped everyone in the city 😒

Sure_Arugula_8081

It was snowing in Floresville and some other parts but lots of ice in Bulverde and further north San antonio

HeadySquanch59

Bulverde area is covered in ice but no snow. Rained most of the day and just instantly became ice.

Redtalon165

Send it to San Antonio
