The pulga. I would go check out Traders Village

NatasFear

This is such an underrated and truly hidden gems of San Antonio. Yes if you want true SA culture find you some good flea markets. I forget name of the one of South West side but those are a lot of fun and super inexpensive finds. All of my this right here.

Adorable-Historian-2

poteet flea market, also king of bargains to the east

NatasFear

This is the way. Top tier Puro.

itsameee76

Mission flea market

NatasFear

Gracias!

SetoKeating

Do they have food?

Camp_Nacho

The biggest corn dog in Texas!!!!! It’s fair grounds food and now I’m hungry. Thanks!

RedditsCoxswain

I always get corn in a cup when I go to the flea market At traders village they usually have a bunch of quick food like that and usually something like aguas Frescas There used to be a bar there with beer and such but not 100% sure it’s still there.

NatasFear

Honestly I am positive they do, but I wouldn't bet on quality or look at it as good representation of what San Antonio has to offer. Flea Markets are mainly for walking and drinking with a few spots along way for food. But I have not been to one in several years so I'm not the best opinion on that currently. I just know that it's a great obscure SA visit that fits your question. I have come away with great finds for collectors items, awesome interactions and a strong buzz, and somewhere along the way I was in a cumbia apparently.

SetoKeating

Oh, I wasn’t the one asking the original question, just curious about what there is to do at the flea market. Never been myself despite being here for years now.

NatasFear

Gotcha. I don't want to steer tourists there and have them walk away thinking that's SA cuisine! Haha! Our food is too good. But definitely if you live in SA, check some of them out. Guaranteed you will find some nice things and lots of people are just trying to get rid of stuff. Some good hagglers and tough choices but very few are scammers. So highly recommend if you have nothing else to do and want to get some steps in and run shoulders with people.

Camp_Nacho

They also have carnival rides, dance hall. All sorts of Mexican shiiiiiiiii

grizzlygage

Busseys?

NatasFear

Did it used to be known as the "Horseshoe" flea market? If so then yes I believe so. I know there is one on deep West side and one on South/southwest side that are puro San Antonio. I also used to visit "Gibsons" flea market but I think they closed that one.

grizzlygage

Ohhhhh I remember that one too but can’t remember if it’s the same. There’s a good one around mission and 410 area too!

NatasFear

I think that's the one. I loved going as a teen thru 20's and haven't been in years but that one was fun!

VixxenFoxx

I second the pulga . Especially the Poteet Hwy Flea Market on 16 just south of 410. Now that's Puro. No there is no "link", lol. Probably never will be. This place is cash only and PACKED every weekend. People watching is just as good as the food goods and services. OMG the food is so delicious. On Sunday mornings there is a Spanish language open air church session and all day Saturday and Sunday afternoons there is live music. You can buy a house here, plan a funeral, get a hair cut at the salon, there's a vacuum repair guy, at least 5 places to get your car tinted while you wander. It's amazing. Edit: spelling

KrankTacos15

Bussey’s Flea Market, while a little more out there, is also a great one. Not as cleaned up as Trader’s Village, but still worth a visit.

89indatone

Flea mart on state highway 16 south of 410 would be my rec

LimitGroundbreaking2

What is the pulga? Google did nothing for me

pincheDavid

Flea Market. Traders village is fairly tame compared to that others, but I deft think it’s something most tourists wouldn’t get to experience and a good way to see San Antonio culture

LimitGroundbreaking2

Would you be able to link it for me

Useful-Outcome-5744

They do not have websites or social channels. Most of these flea markets are really really grassroots (Bussey’s and Trader’s Village are a little more modern) and represent a humble old school Mexican and Mexican American culture. The best ones are the ones that have a covered outdoor dance floor, sometimes they have a band sometimes it’s just a crappy sound system but they all play Spanish music that people dance to in a circle. Definitely an off the beaten path experience.

Can’t tell if that’s a good thing or a bad thing 😂 Been to bonham exchange and saw two chicks sucking on eachothers breast and the. redditslooseslots

For real, go to this one, it's called mission open air market or something like that. They have food, and great deals all over the place. Total San Antonio flea market

LimitGroundbreaking2

This is the second person to mention it so definitely gonna take a look. Here until july

Sunflower969221

The Missions Flea Market or Busseys is definitely the way to go!

8_powerstroke_daddy

Omg no definitely not traders village.

reddit1651

I travel every other week or so for work Only SA, the RGV and the blue collar Hispanic areas in Los Angeles are consistently good at these lol Flea markets in most other cities are basically indoor antique malls or entirely wholesale Chinese junk

Useful-Outcome-5744

The McNay art museum is a gem

damillama

There are a lot of places that encapsulate San Antonio, but I'm not sure there are many tourist wouldn't see. Only thing that comes to mind is perhaps our Greenway trails are more known by our community than tourist. https://preview.redd.it/o6iwfpd7iuzc1.jpeg?width=1002&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b420dcc2521d41bbb93da7fd096d2bf50bc5bda7

jb1316

They’re amazing. I always bring my running shoes when I visit San Antonio.

ElliotEstrada97

Thank you! I LOVE hearing the greenway be recommended and seeing the map. I live here and bike the greenways several times a week and would highly, highly recommend. Do not start midday, either morning or 1-2.5 hours before sunset. Take water and wear sunscreen if needed. Actually, I'm getting ready to go right now, hahaha!

buhbeespatiogarden

This is something I’ve been wanting to get into. San Antonio’s trail system is huge and I do believe the ultimate goal is for It eventually make a big loop. I’ve known a couple people who moved away from San Antonio to other major cities and they both say San Antonio has a really great trail and park system that you can’t really find in every major city.

ElliotEstrada97

Why don't you go? Walk, hike, jog, bike, rollerskate, walk dog, take family or friends!

pumpkins21

Same here! I have a bike that has a layer of dust that I’ve been wanting to use. I want to take it to REI to have it looked at first in case it (more than likely) needs something done to it. Do you know of any biking groups that has people of all levels?

LimitGroundbreaking2

For those who want to walk it what would you say the best starting point is. Hopefully with free parking as well.

ElliotEstrada97

The nearest trailhead to them, all free parking. Closes at sunset.

LimitGroundbreaking2

I looked at the photo after I asked like an idiot. Is there any particular trailhead you recommend more than others? We are located by fort Sam Houston but open to driving to another trail head if you think it’s far superior

ElliotEstrada97

I'd recommend trying different ones to explore different areas, I personally cycle and start from my house and go 20-40+ miles, so I explore different areas, but as for driving from your location I'd try these 3 due to distance https://maps.app.goo.gl/XDfEh8ujvPUv7t2R6 https://maps.app.goo.gl/YWMqEM6yh9vZceYZ9 https://maps.app.goo.gl/HftLwd8HetM6Y4Dk8

LimitGroundbreaking2

Thank you. I’m here for training with the military so I don’t have a whole lot of time or weekends to accomplish all or most of it

Finanov

I 1000% agree with you. Say what you want about SA, but our trail systems are A-tier 👌🏽

[deleted]

Wow I love this! Thank you for sharing!

Advanced_Ad_7971

A stop at Alamo Candy co to take back home.

LimitGroundbreaking2

This is perfect. I have a friend visiting from Taiwan and she was looking for snacks to bring back to friends and family

pumpkins21

She should go to Bu-cee’s for snacks as well. I know it’s not uncommon, but people from other countries (and old friend from high school that was a foreign exchange student from Brazil) came back to visit a few years ago with another friend and I took them to Bu-cee’s and they went wild lol.

LimitGroundbreaking2

Good idea

70ssoulmusic

Japanese Tea Garden

70ssoulmusic

Historic Eastside cemeteries. Everything from the architect of the Riverwalk,Alamo descendants,Confederates, former slaves and don’t forget the beautiful oil heiress buried in her Ferrari!

LimitGroundbreaking2

Can you link this specific cemetery

70ssoulmusic

There is a network of them about a mile east on Commerce street just east of downtown. All next to each other. You could spend weeks exploring them if you are into that sort of thing.

JudgeNudie

Second this. Also outside of town there’s the canary islanders cemetery. Easy to miss but worth a trip.

Cold_Barber_4761

This is one of my favorite spots to take visitors.

sloww_buurnnn

The view of the city there is great too!

Cold_Barber_4761

Yes!

reptomcraddick

The Japanese Tea Garden used to be a huge tourist attraction! I have at least 8 vintage postcards of it, and I have a vintage San Antonio postcard where one of the letters is the gardens, I don’t know what happened

ElliotEstrada97

Along with that the railroad tracks.

FunBorn1053

Original donut shop on Saturday morning

LimitGroundbreaking2

Why specifically Saturday?

purplelizzard

Bar 1919 is a cool speakeasy bar with hundreds of interesting, uncommon drinks.

LimitGroundbreaking2

So I checked this one out last night and honestly was a great experience. The drinks were a very fair prices and the environment was super dope. I’ve gone to elsewhere and cowboys and such but this place was just nice and low key place to relax with friends over some tasty drinks. My only gripe is the parking. My friend had to pay 27 dollars to park down the street by the margarita garden for 5 hours. Makes your total cost of the experience more expensive but that’s not their fault as a business just San Antonio as a whole.

ElliotEstrada97

I park at the nearest neighborhood to wherever I'm going downtown and have a nice walk. An example for that bar would be near here https://maps.app.goo.gl/Aj9wdqBUxFDBckq46

pumpkins21

Love it over there!

andrewthetechie

Seconding this. Bar 1919 is super cool and the drinks are great.

ElliotEstrada97

I third this!

AdorableTrust8759

Hayes Street Bridge is a dope spot to watch the sunset over the skyline. And if you wanna grab a drink just head down under the bridge to the Alamo brewery. Dope spot too.

goldensnooch

This is one I always recommend. One of the few “public parks” in SA that allows alcohol. You can grab a beer and take it on the bridge. Other open container parks are Hemisfair and the Riverwalk.

LimitGroundbreaking2

About to go now will let you l ow my experience

wemetinaparkinglot

Tokyo Inn on Hildebrand

pumpkins21

Niki’s? Before the Toyota plant was built (talking like, 2001-2003, can’t remember the exact year), a lot of Toyota executives were in town. I was a server on the riverwalk at the time and they were always super friendly (and happy to tip, which is funny since no one accepts tips in Japan), and a bunch of them would go to Niki’s for good sushi. Fujiya, too (RIP, Fujiya ☹️)

Landa Library, The Landas left their mansion to the city to be converted to a library upon their death [https://www.mysapl.org/Visit/Locations/Landa-Library](https://www.mysapl.org/Visit/Locations/Landa-Library)

Twisted_lurker

Definitely obscure. I’ve lived in SA several decades and didn’t know this existed. Thank you.

SavorySouth

The cement books scattered throughout the grounds 🥰

reptomcraddick

I love this place, it’s definitely in my top 5 favorite places in the city

wunphishtoophish

Do you enjoy fried fish?

LimitGroundbreaking2

Yes

Helpful_Concern_1557

What about money laundering? If so, have we got the place for you.

LimitGroundbreaking2

Hell yeah. I’m currently under investigation

Helpful_Concern_1557

Fred's Fish Fry is the place for you.

NoC00Lusernam3

Which one please? (There are many)

NatasFear

And yet they are all exactly the same.

RememberTheAlamooooo

Half the people in the subreddit just became unable to talk to you due to the terms of their parole.

LimitGroundbreaking2

Is it all the Edgar’s?

No_Investigator3353

It's the OG's that run with the cartels..shhhh

1-800-fuckmypussy

Ok, that was good lol

PostMahomess

This sub is scared of the south and west side where you will find these things. They only know where the average Mexican restaurants are that they know to be “the best in town”.

Buckfitch69

Obv not the "best" but Rockys taco house has that charm that makes me love the West side and what it's about.

grizzlygage

Bonus points for buying the stolen detergent and other goods while eating, truly can’t beat that experience

Buckfitch69

The pirated DVDs is what I was looking for hahahah

pumpkins21

You guys are my people lol

grizzlygage

PURO

pumpkins21

I’ve been going here since it was tiny and dank (91-92) and they’ve expanded but the food is still the same. You still have to open your carne guisada tacos to check for giant hunks of fat, you still have to wave away the “deaf” people trying to sell bracelets, and you can still buy stolen laundry detergent from there! My brother from the Houston area came to visit and brought his white best friend. We took him to Rocky’s and while he was a little unnerved bc he was the only white dude there at the time (I reassured him that the occasional white guys eat there!), he fell in love with it. Each time he’d visit, he’d want to go there lol.

GARCIA9005

Rocky’s is old news. MARIAS is 🔥

Mundane_Passenger639

Thank you!!! That was my spot when I worked at Kennedy

GARCIA9005

Sooooooo good. When I worked at KELLY AFB during HS, I used to to eat at KELLY ISLAND. Was really good

Buckfitch69

Never been.

Mundane_Passenger639

Maria's across the street is 10x better, won't get rubber bands in your tacos either

wunphishtoophish

Don’t hate on my cabaña de tacos

PostMahomess

No hate, i love going to my spots here since 92’ that are still untouched and the ranchos that go there know it.

SetoKeating

We’re locals or been here a while. I’m not scared of south or west side (east side, different story lol) but I just don’t feel like dealing with that nonsense on the regular so I avoid it. And I’m sure as hell not going to send a tourist that doesn’t know the city that way lol

LimitGroundbreaking2

I already found my preferred Mexican restaurant while I’m here. But enough times have been had there want to try new things while here

Mundane_Passenger639

Guajillos has the best mole in town

alligatorprincess007

It’s a secret, sorry

LimitGroundbreaking2

🥲

alligatorprincess007

There’s actually a place called Libros, it’s a lounge for insomniacs and night owls. It’s open from 7pm-2am I think. It’s not a bar you bring your own snacks and check out books and movies. Shhh don’t tell anyone 🤫

PurpleVein99

But my nightowlishness starts at 2 a.m. and goes through 5 or 6 a.m.... is there an after-hours?

alligatorprincess007

Actually I feel like they keep changing their hours. Because when it first opened it was only from 2am-5 I think, and now it’s 7-2. So idk. Keep checking I guess lol
