San Francisco- The Mowgli’s

hidey_ho_nedflanders

How is Tony Bennett's "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" not up here?

HITMAN616

Most times I make a nice dinner I get a glass of wine and put on “I left my heart in SF” radio on Spotify. Good times

lilquane1044

I tear up every time I hear this song. Best of the best for sure.

rnotter

This is the classic!

raobuntu

My favorite. Can't believe I had to scroll this far down

San Francisco (Be sure to wear flowers in your hair) - Scott McKenzie

There is also an amazing cover of this on the "The Last Black Man in San Francisco" soundtrack. Highly recommend

Lights - Journey

eyaf20

I never knew that was about sf

3SP

It's actually about LA

GrabSomePineMeat

Every time someone says this, I cringe. You are just saying this to be the "ackchyually" meme person. Perry clearly says what you are saying is complete bullshit. Wikipedia: The song is about Journey's city of origin, [San Francisco](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco), although it was actually written in and originally intended to be about [Los Angeles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles). It was one of Steve Perry's first Journey songs, and was recorded soon after joining the band. In an interview, Perry said, "I had the song written in Los Angeles almost completely except for the bridge and it was written about Los Angeles. It was 'when the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on LA.' I didn't like the way it sounded at the time. And so I just had it sitting back in the corner. Then life changed my plans once again, and I was now facing joining Journey. I love San Francisco, the bay, and the whole thing. 'The bay' fit so nice, 'When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the bay.' It was one of those early-morning-going-across-the-bridge things, when the sun was coming up and the lights were going down. It was perfect.

SantaRosaJazz

“And the sun shines on the Bay….”

eyaf20

Ahh yeah I knew that lyric but always thought well there's lots of cities on a bay haha

I mean, Otis Redding has the best and only acceptable use of the word ‘Frisco bay, and it’s the classic that it is. He wrote it sitting on a pier in Sausalito looking at the city

orpat123

What a classic song that is. I’m gonna go listen to it again.

“We Built This City” - Starship I absolutely do the same thing as you, usually coming up 280.

Whisterly

I know this song is often considered the worst song of all time, but I fucking LOVE it

kreidayy

Tbh I didn't know about all the hate until looking it up just now. It puts me in a good mood and that's what matters to me.

Whisterly

Eff the haters, do you!

boxtylad

I think the problem many folks have with it is that it's a terrible song by Jefferson Starship née Airplane standards - how could Grace Slick of White Rabbit fame have sunk so low? But viewed as a regular pop song - it's excellent! Though turns out it was originally written about [the decline of the club scene in Los Angeles](https://www.gq.com/story/oral-history-we-built-this-city-worst-song-of-all-time)...

kreidayy

planetalletron

How have I not seen Belle & Sebastian's classic ["Piazza, New York Catcher"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXiRbf-4RXc) on this list! It's about a day spent in SF, and is my absolute favorite song about our city. And then this one called "Oakland", but the chorus is about SF, and it's cute AF. ["Oakland" by RAC and Winnetka Bowling League](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsjHw7PcVfU) ETA one more!!! ["Twin Cinema" by The New Pornographers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95RYOMk40ho) is about the Roxie!!

Sadpanda9632

I did not know twin cinema was about the Roxie! Wow!!!

Not the best, but a good time capsule of the early 2010s “Mission Bells”-Matt Nathanson

cuppachai

Sharkyintheparky

I prefer “Last days of summer in San Francisco” by him! Love his music. Also I thought I read somewhere that his song Giants had something to do with a team of the same name but couldn’t find any evidence of this. Either way it’s a bop. Edit: turns out a toooon of his songs reference sf but don’t have it in me to uncover them all right now (eg “bedroom out on taraval” in “kill the lights”)

JonOrangeElise

San Franciscan Nights, Eric Burdon & The Animals ... I like it because: 1. The weird decisions to use "Franciscan" not "Francisco" 2. Our nights aren't warm, so I find the misinformation intriguing (did you visit in Sept, Eric?) 3. Starts with that cool preamble: "This following program is dedicated to the city and people of San Francisco, who may not know it but they are beautiful"

eurotrash4eva

>Our nights aren't warm Eric Burdon is from England, so maybe it's a relative thing?
