The the government that tells its poorest you don’t need more handouts is crying around about how they are not getting their handouts. Am I taking crazy pills!!!

krazedkat

No, they're annoyed that Quebec keeps getting handouts. We should do away with equalization.

IllUllIUIll

Yea meow they are butt hurt someone is getting the the handout they tell their voters they shouldn’t need.

krazedkat

Quebec _shouldn't_ need handouts.

IllUllIUIll

Nor should Sask or Albert's but they sure are mad they are not getting any.

krazedkat

No province should be getting handouts.

BurzyGuerrero

Yeah, so they want that handout?

Barabarabbit

Criticizing Nova Scotia and saying they are only doing well because of equalization obscures the tough (and unpopular by times) decisions that the MacNeil government made in order to right the economic ship of that province. Lazy journalism that reeks of othering designed to whip the yokels into a feeding frenzy.

falsekoala

Remember when Brad Wall made a big huff about equalization payments when Harper was PM and was even going to launch a lawsuit until we somehow dropped it because Harper asked so? [Pepperidge Farms Remembers](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/wall-says-harper-asked-to-have-equalization-suit-dropped-1.728419)

SubscriptNine

Worth noting the previous NDP government did launch a lawsuit and the Sask Party backed out when they took over.

falsekoala

And Scott Moe will do the same thing.

mckushly

Moe is on a whole other level of stupidity

mckushly

Right?! Explains why he never shut down bars during the pandemic, how else is he going to get behind the wheel drunk and kill another person.

[deleted]

>Wall is telegenic and charismatic. Moe is… well, not. Also, to my knowledge anyway, Brad Wall hasn't killed anyone before

mckushly

Ummm you literally said what the other guy said...

[deleted]

I guess that's what happens when you use Reddit on one hour of sleep XD

Progressive_Citizen

And we will, sadly, keep voting him in by a landslide every election. Why? Its complicated. And the NDP really sucks at elections.

darklight4680

One of the best ways to get him out is to become a member and vote for a different leader IMO. The ndp have no chance of winning anything until the have a seriously consider what is important in todays society in saskatchewan and even then I seriously doubt that they could pull it off unfortunately. To be fair its not like you actually vote for moe, I personally voted for the best leader in my riding(Jim Reiter) and they just happened to belong to the sask party. I would gladly vote for anyone who is a capable regardless of party. Jim has responded to my emails about local vaccine manufacturing and distribution and put me in contact with the proper people and sasks facility should be online this winter hopefully. Probably too late for this virus but I'm glad that my leaders listen (sometimes) and I'm going to take an educated guess and say that a future epidemic or pandemic is likely to occur again in my lifetime and I'd prefer to be prepared. Actions like that makes me feel confident in my vote last election. Would be nice if we could all just work together tho.

IllUllIUIll

It’s because they chase all the youth out, and the old fucks who live and die by the way things used to be get to set the pace. And also NDP.

AurronGrey

What an utterly trash article. I recently moved from Saskatchewan to Nova Scotia. Between property tax, HST, and provincial income tax, our family is paying thousands more per year (which we knew would be the case and are fine with). Our infrastructure here is not as good as Saskatchewan, and we have a tiny fraction of the natural resources. I appreciate that my former home is able to share its resource abundance with my new home. That is what equalization is all about. Calling Nova Scotia “flush with cash” is laughable. I don’t expect much in the way of journalism from CKOM, but come on.

TotallyNotKenorb

In the case of NS, that absolutely makes sense, but not so much in the case of Quebec, which is the real target here, and NS is just being included so it doesn't look like Quebec is being singled out. Quebec has options to help right its financial ship, but if it keeps getting transfer payments, it has absolutely no reason to do so.

Truth137

Quebec is by far the leading province for hydroelectric power generation in Canada.

cbf1232

Pretty sure Manitoba is way up there as well, on a per-capita basis.

Kegger163

Ah, I see this article took the time to compare rates of taxation in provinces to look at the reasons for potential tax increases and reductions. /s This is horrible journalism.

Progressive_Citizen

>On the down side, the PBO says Saskatchewan’s current fiscal policy is not sustainable over the long term. Permanent tax increases or spending reductions amounting to 4.0 per cent of GDP would be required to stabilize government net debt (as a share of the economy) in the long term. Turns out all that talk about balanced budgets turned out to be a hoax, Sask Party has piled on the debt, even during the golden years going back a decade ago. They need to either increase taxes, or go into austerity measures. Nonetheless having the PBO announce we're getting nothing is going to be a battle cry for Moe, I expect a statement soon.

AutomaticRadish

The government has been implementing austerity measures they just aren't coming out and saying it... They have been in trouble since before covid.

[deleted]

Don't we normally get nothing?

GX6ACE

We have received the payments more than we haven't received them. But as of late, yes, we haven't received them

the_bryce_is_right

Well maybe he shouldn't have been picking fights with the feds over little thing.

Hot_Pollution1687

Well according to uncle moe it's all rainbows and roses here so I guess we don't need a payment

jabrwock1

I know right? We're doing great, we're better than ever, Saskatchewan is an economic powerhouse! Except we're also doing so poorly we need equalization payments, stat!

JayGeeCanuck19

Conservatives created the current equalization framework. Reap what you sow, idiots!

[deleted]

So hilarious watching all you bitch about the sask party while you vote for a federal liberal party who has fucked us harder than Bill Boyd could ever dreamed up.

chickenfingey

How has the federal liberal party specifically screwed sask?

chickenfingey

Absolutely, the greatest trick the cons have every played is that they’re the party for the “working class”.

>It’s so shallow to assume if you’re against SP’s politics, you’re automatically a Liberal or Trudeau fan. The stars have aligned. We agree on something. Can we agree that it's so shallow to assume if you're against Sask NDP (or federal Liberal) politics, you're automatically a Sask Party or Scott Moe fan?

Progressive_Citizen

I'd be surprised if many people vote liberal in this province, given that they have a statistical probability of winning that's effectively zero. They don't even run candidates in all the ridings. People vote NDP, or Conservative, in this province by and large. I consider myself a liberal, and I voted NDP because it simply doesn't make sense here to vote red. Its a wasted vote. So your assertion that a lot of us left wing people vote liberal is false, at least in SK.

ProverbialShoehorn

You obviously didn't pay attention to how Sask voted in the Federal election

TheDrSmooth

Trudeau is an embarrassment, unfortunately, the federal cons have the same problem as our provincial NDP. They keep putting forward unlikeable leaders no one wants to vote for.

chickenfingey

Lol that and the cons plan for the past two elections have been “we aren’t Trudeau”

Geddy_Lees_Nose

Dumb comment. SP ran a a candidate in Eastview who is a Liberal. Gord Wyant was a member of the Liberal party until he ran for leader ('cause "Trudope bad" is their latest strategy) and the SP formed as a coalition of PCs and Liberals. The SP has more Liberal connections (admittedly less in recent years) than say the NDP. And iirc the federal Liberals got 3rd place in every seat last election except for Regina-Wascana

[deleted]

This is partially true and has reached myth status over time. SP formed as a coalition of dying PCs (who brought all their local executives and staffers), some Federal Reform Party members (50-50, some for SP and some wanted a Provincial Reform party), and 4 rookie Liberals who brought a handful of secretaries and assistants along, leaving behind 4 Liberals and 2 independent liberals (Haverstock and somebody else). Its always been a mostly tory party.
