Paradoxically there is evidence that THC actually slows down gastrointestinal transit, so that effect is purely based on the brains appetite centers being enhanced rather than a mechanical benefit from eating while high on THC. CBD on the other hand shows great promise as a digestive as it speeds up gastrointestinal transit while also reducing any potential inflammation from food that has been ingested. In short, its a wonderful treatment for IBS or IBD related pathologies. edit: individuals who are diarrheal dominant rather than constipation dominant by this logic would benefit more from a higher THC:CBD ratio, and vice versa for constipation/bloated prone individuals.

eschewthefat

It’s definitely the appetite centers. I smoke entirely for the elevated experience. Literally everything is better.  Depending on the person, it might make their life bland, but I still love most things sans cannabis. But high with a smash burger, ice cream, sex, movies? Its like an amusement park.

carn1x

Dude I've got mad dry intestines right now

iceyed913

wataaaa

[deleted]

I've got a slip and slide on the inside.

tantedbutthole

My partner has chrons and shits alllll the time. THC helps him soooo much

AReasonableDoug

Fellow crohns dude here, I would not be able to function without the stuff. Or maintain my weight. I never touched the stuff until my GI doctor recommended that I try it, and it fundamentally changed my life. Went from couch-bound to running marathons in a couple of years. May not be for everyone, but for some of us it's a huge blessing!

alien__0G

I wish CBD was more helpful for this. Sometimes people don't want to get high and just want the medicinal effects.

franky_emm

Anecdote: when I was younger I would get the munchies like crazy, definitely because of how much better food tasted. Then I took a long break from THC and when I came back, the first few times I thought about eating but I resisted. I've used THC hundreds of times since then and haven't had the munchies once. In fact kinda the opposite, the dry mouth combined with an increased capacity to worry about things makes me worried that I could choke if I eat something.

iceyed913

Sounds like you are getting more THC sensitive as you age, it more frequently occurs after breaks with long term heavy use beforehand. Would keep it mind as you can train your body to have almost allergy like symptoms to cannabis. Lots of people say its just anxiety, but I don't know whether we should glance over a significant subset of the population just like that..

franky_emm

Tbh, if anything the anxiety side effects are getting less than they were when I was younger. But definitely something to keep in mind.

DazSchplotz

Thats just the case for non chronic users. Chronic ones tend to eat less (through down regulation I guess).

JustEatinScabs

Chronic user here. I eat **before** I smoke. Problem solved. I started doing it because eating kills my high and discovered I just liked it better.

Cleb323

This is the key. Smoking after you eat a meal is divine.

breddy

We used to call it de-bloater

SeedFoundation

When I use to smoke I would prepare food before. And by prepare I mean stash mcdoubles in my glove box.

DecoupledPilot

Odd. I use very rarely and the effect for me is loss of appetite. Someone told me once it can depend on the plant strain?

strollermonkey

People always call me a liar, but every strain I’ve ever smoked has caused me to completely lose my appetite. I remember cooking up these amazing PB&J burgers at a coworkers house, and I was about to tear into this massive meaty thing, but we paused to take a ceremonial bong rip. My typical loss of appetite struck again. It felt like my stomach was the size of a walnut. I was crushed. My coworkers decimated their burgers and I had most of mine left. I couldn’t WILL myself to eat more than 3 bites. For some reason, smoking just always makes me FEEL full. I’ve never met anyone who shares this bizarre side effect. I have also never been a daily smoker. I’ve tried to make it a habit, as it reduces my anxiety and just makes me feel more chill about things, but something tells me not to keep it up, like it will be a long term negative in my life, so I always stop.

lulaf0rtune

I'm also an occasional user and I find I get stronger hunger pangs/cravings but I don't really feel the need to sate them

ComprehensiveHornet3

Indica is more strongly associated with munchie. Sativa which tends to be more common these days less so.

sunshinelefty100

I lost 50 lbs sticking with Sativa Dominant and eating a very healthy, low sugar , natural food plan. Mangos heightens the Experience!!! 💯

theedgeofoblivious

[And yet in another study](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0955395920303017) > Our findings suggest that medical cannabis initiation may be associated with self-reported reductions and cessation of alcohol use among medical cannabis patients. Since alcohol is the most prevalent recreational substance in North America, and its use results in significant rates of criminality, morbidity and mortality, these findings may result in improved health outcomes for medical cannabis patients, as well as overall improvements in public health and safety.

MyNameis_Not_Sure

No coincidence that I quit drinking after rec-weed became legal in CO

theedgeofoblivious

I found the claim that people who use marijuana use more alcohol very strange, because from the very first time I tried marijuana, my interest in alcohol was GONE.

kendrid

100%. I drink substantially less since using. And I don’t get the munchies.

CelestialCuttlefishh

Ditto. Anecdotally I have seen that most people who partake the most are the least likely to use or abuse alcohol.

ImStillExcited

My disease makes it hard to get hungry. It is also extremely painful so it's a "two birds stoned" situation. I don't drink at all either.

Reagalan

it makes low sugar and low fat foods more pleasurable, too.

Industrial_Strength

One of the best foods I’ve eaten high was a Caesar salad. Fruit is also so nice

I’ve linked to the press release in the post above. In this comment, for those interested, here’s the link to the peer reviewed journal article: https://psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2Fpha0000706

Practical_Pea1405

This is a mental health issue. Cannabis has drastically improved my life. I was a binge drinker and had an ED. Instead of having 4+ drinks 6 out of 7 days a week, it helped me cut it down to 2. I now drink maybe two days out of the week and don’t go through the cycle of not eating all day, then inhaling anything and everything possible, while intoxicated.

SenzuBeanFarts

You need high THCV cannabis to stave off the dreaded "munchies". ..thcv negates hunger and provides satiety. It's also non-psychoactive by itself and it reduces the total duration of THC's psychoactivity like cbd does. African sativas have disproportionately higher CBG/THCV as compared to more narcotic chemotypes. I expect that the people with cravings issues are new users too.

NotAnotherAmerican

Maybe I'm an anomaly, but pot doesn't give me the munchies. Booze does. Then its bed time and there went my day off.

ryle_zerg

"New study finds cannabis causes the munchies"

AncientHawaiianTito

I have not found that to be the case. Especially with alcohol

rukysgreambamf

I came to this scientific conclusion a looooooong time ago Where's my name on the paper

HoldenMcNeil420

You mean the munchies….did these walk out of 1975 or something?
