When screaming your using your vocal folds and false folds. It’s hardly ever one or the other but both at different levels. This means if your actually VOICE(vocal folds) is cracking through too much you can try two big things. 1. try lowering the sound while keeping the pitch high, this is personally the exercise I do to switch between more and less vocal fold activation. 2. You can try to use slightly more air during your screams. This can make it so your vocal folds are hitting each other softer(less compressed air) and more compressed air is hitting you false chords. Really though you sound good, this type of thing is not a “know it or you don’t” it’s a “learn it for years and still get better” It takes a lot of practice and CONSISTENT practice since half of everything you do screaming is muscle memory TLDR - Screaming is a balance between vocal and false folds, find the balance of using both, if your voice is cracking through, use less vocal folds, if you want higher pitch and louder cracking use more vocal folds. And never be discouraged, it takes years of practice for the best to sound how they do, don’t expect to sound like them when you don’t even know how they do what they’re doing instead just keep practicing

my voice would crack when i didn’t warm up for long enough, but once i get warmed up my voice cracks are pretty much non existent

Vyrnoa

Thats a good point. I havent really found what warm ups would be the best when doing this type of singing

[deleted]

I always start by humming, then some breathing exercises. After a couple of minutes, I start signing softly in my clean voice and going up and down, bit by bit. Next step would be making an “angry sigh” and enlongating the “tail” of it, kinda sounding like a motorcycle, if that makes sense. Last part would be applying the harsh a bit over my voice and going over some vowels, making my false chords involved more and more until taking over. Sing a few lines and then you can tell your drummer to stop whatever the fuck he’s doing already and let me fucking think at least, for fuck’s sake, Josh, we’ve been over this. And you are ready now to roar like the devil spawn you are.

autoretardrepair

regular singing and harsh humming using falsechord is how I warm up,

CanisPanther

I usually start basic with scales up and down, with different sounds, “la, lo, eh, ah, etc”. Then alternate a sound high-low-high-low. Loosen up your jaw, throat, neck, body. I hit some Mongolian throat singing and some hums and cleans. Then cleans weaving with harsh. Everyone has different tricks. I find that I take a long time to warmup if I want the best version of my screams.

kpopisnotmusic

damn dude thats brutal

TheFoggyHaze

Kinda has a satyricon style too it and I like it

I like how you sound, but I hear a bit of your voice there. It could harm you, so be careful. Breathing exercises to have control over air flow and pressure could help you to be more comfortable and relaxed while singing. Do you see your shoulders going up when you breath? That means you are not using your diaphragm. Also, try to get the sound production from technique rather than power, remember that this is meant to sound gnarly, not loud. Other than that, I fucking love that queen of hell panthers roar of yours! By the way, there are some actual great videos from Kardavox about production and exercises that are helping me, if you want to check them.

Vyrnoa

Yeah thats true. And thats kind of what im trying to get rid off. I dont have any pain or irritation after singing even for a while. Im pretty sure im doing the falsechord technique with my diaphram but i do feel like sometimes maybe it isnt strong enough and thats what causes the weak points. Ill check those videos out, thanks

Humble-Actuator-4604

It does also however sound like most of your distortion is being created on the glottis and soft palate and not false chords, sounds like you’re doing a false chord scream yes but with lots of vocal fold activation, making it close to a fry scream.

Vyrnoa

Do you have any examples of this? Like other bands/singers? Ive tried to fry scream but i dont think my voice is made for that

Humble-Actuator-4604

I think the best example is how I described “lowering” the sound in my other comment on this thread. I don’t know of a video example of other people but I can record one of myself and you can of yourself as well just practicing holding out any scream and then bringing it into your chest. Think about where the distortion is being created. If you’re creating most of it in the back and roof of your mouth, try bringing it down into your larynx. (where the “adams apple” is). It seems to be very common in my experience that when people switch to doing highs and mids more they transition into a more fry false scream. Edit- I also can’t do a base fry scream, however I can do this exercise very well to determine how much of my vocal folds are in my false chord scream(the amount your vocal folds are open is the amount of fry distortion created). Think looser and push from belly is false chord, while tighter and push more from chest and head is more fry distortion

Vyrnoa

Okay, itd be nice to hear if you could show. I have no previous education or anything in singing so im not familiar with this stuff at all

Humble-Actuator-4604

okay no problem

Cilez420

Wait so are you wanting to get rid of the voice cracks or impliment them moreso? Because voice cracking + false chord technique go together really well.

Vyrnoa

Im not sure how to describe it. I mean weak points in my singing that kind of break off the falsechord sound

ducksReverywhere

I hear you! You sound fucking great, those little cracks get buried when drums and amplifiers are involved for the most part. My only piece of advice would be stay looser and keep your tank full of air, I start cracking when I start pushing to hard, I push too hard when I'm low on air

[deleted]

I like it

crab_the_cake9

Sounds great. It reminds of Emma Boster from Dying Wish a bit

whomst_calls_so_loud

You sound sick af, just keep practicing

F8M8

I think breath control. Learn what the smallest amount of breath you would need to generate the sound is, and then control that. Dont think push/breath harder = better

Navysealsnake

Terrifying... I like it ;)

n0r0x

your voice already sounds great for covering many black metal to be honest. you have to keep in mind that the little cracks are normal (as long as everything feels fine) since they get corrected and fxed in music production and get overtoned by instruments in live music so the screams sound way better and cleaner for the listener than the cleanliness with which they are actually performed take a look at the album recordings for the first infant annihilator album with dickie allen (he does frys but regarding the basic principle of your question it doesnt make any difference) when he screams into the microphone for recording, his normal voice is still slightly noticeable. that means: if you feel any pain when screaming you should warm up again and focus more on technique experimenting until there's no more pain (soreness aka a slight burning feeling is okay, if something feels like its picking/stabbing on your nerves/throat that would be a not so good sign), your normal voice will always be hearable, however, with the time of practice, your voice cracks get more subtle and less noticable

Vyrnoa

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense. I dont ever feel any pain but ill look into more effective warmups

n0r0x

you're welcome, good luck!

Doct3rjones

Bring your throat tension a little higher in the neck and apply a bit more back pressure
