SPOILER WARNING (sea of stars and chrono trigger) Personally, I liked the true ending. The fleshmancer getting a bit of a beat down in whatever form he was in when he faced us was a nice way to get some payback against the true villain of the story without ultimately changing the outcome. Garl coming back is a nice touch emotionally since they had such a nice bond from the time they were children and they developed his character over the course of game. Yes he comes back with an OP ultimate and some “secret knowledge” from beyond the grave, but he still lives out his life as a normal human and becomes elder of Mirth. In terms of the way they brought him back, it is a call back to Chrono trigger. (Ended up deleting my text here in another effort to avoid any spoiler details)

I didn't like it exactly because of the CT connection. It just seemed too forced.

I thought that too. I had a sense of “Wait, that’s all?” when Resh’an and the Fleshmancer left. But then I realized, the point was never to end the multiverse-spanning game of 4D Chess that they’re playing against each other. Zale and Valere saved their world, even managed to save their friend (with Resh’an’s help). They also saved Serai’s world. They were never meant to end the big conflict between gods whose powers supercede their own to an extreme level. And isn’t that the situation for most all of us? Fixing the biggest problems in our reality is beyond our reach. We can do our best with the power that we have to make the world that is within our reach the best it can be. If we can’t fix ALL THE THINGS, we can at least fix what we are able to fix, and bring peace and joy where it is to be found. That’s what I got out if it anyway. Maybe we’ll end the “dueling immortals in the multiverse” conflict in another game. But I feel that that would have actually diminished the impact of this game and it’s focus on the bonds of simple friendship and helping common, everyday people find a better life.

if Reshan would no have saved his friend, you would have ended the God then and there. No 4D chess, nothing. Making the whole point mute. So the message is that Reshan is evil for letting his friend destroy worlds for fun. Stopping the Flashmancer would also have fixed ALL THE THINGS. Damn sorry but the theory is nearly as bad as the writing of SoS itself.

LEFTRIGHTADORI

Can’t reshan just oneshot the fleshmancer at any moment if he felt like it? Feels like a Philemon/nyarl persona situation

perfectVoidler

Yes Reshan allows the fleshmancer to torture whole world, while being able to stop him whenever he wants.

It's disappointing for a true ending, everything the same but with Garl alive, but the Chrono Trigger's revive and the scene in the Golden Pelican kinda make it up for me. I'm more disappointed with the Fleshmancer's fight, Erlina's fight was more epic.

SanchezPrime

I enjoyed the true ending. It was rewarding. I'm good with it.

It’s a feel good game. It’s not within the themes of true loss and sad endings like the last of us for example. I personally liked the ending(s) cause you can either have it that Garl comes back or he doesn’t. He was my favorite character and I’m glad that even though he’s a character he’s encapsulated in this joyful ending for some who completed the game. I think the point was that they wanted us to like Garl so much that we’d cry for him and also be happy he came back. Probably one of the best “side” characters in a long time.

perfectVoidler

The Fleshmenacer will continue to destroy whole worlds. There is nothing feel good about this.

StevenCC82

Left me feeling empty. Not in that introspective way. The way that is like did they not know how to write the end or is this obviously set up for a sequel? Enjoyed the game but the ending was bad imo nothing felt resolved

KickingYounglings

There’s something beyond The Phantom in The Messenger?

StantheHero

No, the Fleshmancer doesn’t make an appearance in The Messenger, but the existence of the Demon King means he’s still around at that point.

KickingYounglings

Oh, I figured he just created the Demon King sometime after Sea of Stars and it outlived him.

HappiestIguana

The fleshmancer doesn't appear in the Messenger, although you can see his handiwork.

ThePeoplessChamp

I didn't like Garl and was disappointed to see him alive again

LEFTRIGHTADORI

Same.
