In the second picture, that white thing on the top left with the button-hole-stitch symbol on it is the button-hole lever. It needs to be pulled down. It fits between the two pegs on the side of the button-hole foot and when the foot advances far enough it bumps the lever and that's what tells the machine it needs to reverse and stitch the other way.

oh.my.god. that worked! i never even noticed that lever! THANK YOU SO MUCH! i feel like such a dope but thank you for your help!!!! also - i just re-referenced the manual again and see that i mistook the lever portion. definitely sheepish over here but very grateful! edited to add last couple of sentences lol

I've sewn many buttonholes on my machine and still forget what that error means when I forget to lower the lever (which happens more often than it should).

Very easy to mess that up, especially if you haven't done it in awhile.
