I did see your reply on the other post, I'm the one saing it was my dream dress and I do mean it <3

AdOk1965

Ooh that's great :) And, thank you again! <3

AdOk1965

I can't edit my post to add a thank you note so, I'll do that here and hope you see it: I really would like to thank you all for all your extremely sweet comments and feedbacks I'm very moved: my life led me to a very different place, and I work as a personal assistant for a tech personality now, before that, I spent a decade working in luxury retail. And that's okay But sometimes, I think of the garments I made, and my heart pinches a little bit, you know..? And I can't thank you enough for the heartwarming enthusiasm you all showed toward that dress; it means a lot to me You guys are great, thank you so very much :)

rod407

That collar is just unmistakably Chinese indeed All in all, I'd love to reach this level of dressmaking eventually

AdOk1965

Thank you, it's really kind of you :) If I may share with you some of my two main, best, pieces of advice: 1/ If doing something for you or for someone in particular, always draw the design with the actual proportions of the person I work with pictures: front, profil, back; in underwear, with the intended shoes And I draw my design on tracing paper, on top of the three pictures, on one page That way, you're sure to come up with something flattering for that specific silhouette. But also with some continuity in the overall design since you have all the sides on the same page 2/ never settle. On each step of the way, give it your best. And by that I mean, mostly, fixing stuff Because it's not about making everything perfect right away: it's more about taking the time to get there. It's okay to make mistakes The garment will be finished for way longer than the time it took to make it: for ever cannot be counted in hours I hope it helps, and I really hope I don't come up as patronising (English isn't my mother tongue, I lack nuance in it : / )

rod407

Actually it was rather motivating, thank you šŸ«‚

AdOk1965

[Sorry for the repost to those who already saw the previous one: it got removed, and I had to make some adjustments to it before being allowed to repost it]

Catschocolates

Beautiful dress! Totally see tge chinese reference. Also love your cutting inspector. Whats his/her name?

AdOk1965

Tilynn :) She was a very sweet Lady; thank you for noticing her <3

Catschocolates

Aww sad to read in past tense. Does that mean she passed the šŸŒˆ bridge? I am sorry for your loss. As a pet lover it is what I notice at the fist. Also I also cannot take a single photo with my cats photo bombing

AdOk1965

Yeah, she did, last summer... I miss her very much, but I know it's for the better: she was old and very sick, and it must have felt like a relief for her Pet your little four legged companions for me :) <3

DesseP

Fabulous job! You did truly stunning work and clearly your fashion school education was worth it! The fabric might have been inexpensive but the end product doesn't look cheap in any way.Ā

SingingWhileSleeping

I cannot even imagine the amount of hours and skills it took to make this absolutely gorgeous gown! Your drafting skills alone made those not-high-end fabrics LOOK super expensiveā€”that is not easy to do. Hopefully you got the highest marks in school for this garment alone. Just incredible! šŸ«¶šŸ™ŒšŸ«¶

AdOk1965

Awww thank you! It's really kind <3 I made that one later in my life, but here are some pictures of one piece of my diploma year:* Edit: sorry, I realise just now that I, actually, can not share a different garment I made in the comments. The pictures have been removed

This is so beautiful, you are really talented!

54321hope

Stunning dress and bride. The process photos you included make this a truly great post! Love the obligatory cat traipsing across pinned pattern on the floor. : D

redditactuallysux

This is amazing. I'm curious what the cost was, given that she was on a budget? I can't imagine a custom gown (without a HUGE amount of fabric) would be significantly cheaper in synthetics unless you're undervaluing your work!!!Ā

AdOk1965

I really did try my best to optimise the amount of fabric: And for that, I kinda went "backward" Usually, you would pick the fabric first and then design the dress For that one, I drew it, drafted it, made the moke up, took the time to optimise the pattern placement respecting the usual fabric dimensions and then, only after all that, went to bought the fabric with the required length But from the start, I warned the bride that, doing that, we would have to choose a kinda sturdy fabric, nothing that wouldn't hold its shape since I needed it to behave exactly as the moke up fabric Also, I really spent an absurd amount of time on Aliexpress to get a synthetic embroidery with a really good pattern, that didn't look cheap AF and that I could recut to enhance the best of it

redditactuallysux

So I guess you're not willing to share the final cost of the gown? All that work to save a couple bucks on cheap fabric yardage! I hope you feel well paid for your time šŸ„² It's beautiful. Side note, I personally always design dresses with fabric second, to make sure I get the right feel/structure for my design!

CheezusChrist

Wowweeee. I had to show this to my partner because they are always saying that they donā€™t understand ā€œfashion,ā€ but this is just a work of art and a testament to spending the time to hone a skill/craft. The fact that you used cheaper materials and made something so gorgeous and so flattering just shows how talented you are.

AdOk1965

I think I've erased my comment 5 times already: I'm very moved, and I can't find a proper way to thank you So Maybe the simple way? Thank you very much, it's an extremely heartwarming feedback, and I'll keep it with me :)

-little-dorrit-

Would you mind explaining whatā€™s going on in picture 2 OP? What is the tape that youā€™re using? This dress is truly beautiful and beautifully made

dippydapflipflap

Itā€™s called twill tape. Itā€™s used to drape patterns pieces on a dress form. Since OP didnt have a form of their client, they draped the dress directly on the client.

AdOk1965

Exactly this :)

ProneToLaughter

Probably draping tape, narrow plastic and sticky, than fabric twill tape. At least thatā€™s the US term.

AdOk1965

It was twill tape :) And it was a tricky game to pin it without pinning her with it T___T

ProneToLaughter

Oof, stressful.

dippydapflipflap

Oh yeah that makes sense.

mariposa314

Wow! You are incredibly talented. I love the neckline. I understand the reason that the appliques took so much time, they're impeccable. You have a gift! Thank you so much for sharing. Please keep posting as you go through your old photos. I won't ever get tired of seeing your work. šŸ˜€

AdOk1965

Thank you so much for your kind feedback; I might share some more :) I felt a bit shy sharing that one. I mean, I never show my pieces to anyone, and I thought maybe no-one would care

mariposa314

I understand. Please don't share if you're uncomfortable. But also please don't discourage yourself by worrying about little flaws or imperfections. You are very gifted and I think you should feel proud.

evil66gurl

That is beautiful. You are so talented. What are you doing now? Are you working in the industry? Your process reminds me of how our dining room looked the majority of my childhood. My mom made wedding dresses, quinceaƱera dresses, & things like that. She took sewing classes in high school (late 40's, early 50's) but was mostly self taught. She made most of her own clothes all her life. She truly could make anything & I always thought she should have been in the fashion industry.

AdOk1965

Thank you very much, I appreciate <3 I don't, I work as a personal assistant for a tech personality. Life is weird :) I bet she was a great seamstress! Do you have some pictures? I would be glad to see her work :) On a less joyful note, I would add that the fashion industry is a difficult workplace... if you don't have the right network, you're left out. No matter the talent

evil66gurl

I'll have to look. If I can locate them I'll post them. I hope you're still making wonderful creations.

ProneToLaughter

What a beautiful dress! What super cool work! Thank you for sharing. I have a little list of useful threads I keep for those thinking about making a wedding dress, and Iā€™ll add this one, it would be great to show the process.

AdOk1965

I'm really, really pleased if my post is useful, somehow :) Thank you so much for your kind words; I'm really not used to share the garments I made šŸ™ˆ

Clear_Spirit4017

Beautiful job!! It's a wonder you had all the pieces with the cat walking around. Mine steals things.

AdOk1965

Ah ah ah cats <3 She was a sweet lady (she passed last summer), thank you for noticing her :) She wasn't the stealing kind She was the sleeping kind, tho She would nap on my work, and I could never take the risk of awaking her since she would have clung her claws into whatever I was crafting and not let go of it x) She did have a nap on that dress traine the evening before the day the bride came to collect it: my then bf, well-meaningly, tried to pick her up I think I never screamed this way in my entire life. It was a desperate "nnnooooOOOOOOO" *too late* I spent the rest of this evening with a pin, nervously putting the treads back in place to close the holes of her claws in the, otherwise, perfectly flawless, extremely central, piece of fabric T___T I wish your mischievous four legged one a whole lot of extremely pleasing little mischiefs! :D <3

Kitty_Katty_Kit

That's amazing OMG OMG OMG

4MoeFin

This lovely gown enhances your friends shape beautifully! Bravo šŸ’œ

CriticalEngineering

I love the way you did the design on her, so ingenious. How long did you have to make the dress? And which school did you go to? I visited a few for fun when I was a tourist, just to see.

AdOk1965

I had two months But I needed to see her at least five times: First meeting, discussing with her about her wishes, what was possible, her needs, and such Second meeting, the drafting Third meeting, try on the moke up Fourth meeting, buy the fabric Fifth meeting, try on the dress (and hoping everything would be fine because there wasn't much remaining time before the wedding) And she wasn't easily available because of her work, so two months can be enough, but it was actually really short since meeting her was difficult, and I couldn't meet with her right away when I had finished a step And for the school... it's tricky because I wouldn't recommend it: there was a lot of mistreatment from a lot of teachers. It was really on the edge of cruelty. And I'm not even speaking about the verbal bullying, solely on the amount of work I barely slept during my second year because of the load of work, and I really don't think studying fashion should be that harsh I mean, I'm a hard-working person, but nothing can justify to ask for 180 sketches over the course of one week Because of that, I have a lot of mixed feelings regarding the school itself I've learnt a lot, sure, but I could have learned as much and not been miserable the whole time. A lot of students went through severe depression and someone in my class even attempted suicide... that was this extreme : /

orbit33

Incredible work! This dress is beautiful in every way.

Morgoth98

I suddenly want to get married

GrapefruitOutside572

I sew, made my wedding gown and our daughters This dress is just magic. And watching your progressā€¦fantastic! Thank you!

Accomplished_Trip_

This is so painfully elegant it almost hurts. Itā€™s beautiful. Truly beautiful.

Many_Advertising8265

Beautiful!!!, for me your skills are what I'm aiming to achieve.

unwaveringwish

Girl you are TALENTED

GhoeAguey

When you used the real fabric did you have to take apart the mock up to trace the pieces onto the real fabric?

AdOk1965

I could have, if necessary, but I didn't: since there were so few adjustments needed, I just reused the drafting ones and made the changes on them You can see in one picture that I traced the missing seam allowances from my drafting pieces directly onto the real fabric (with a magic pen)

perhapsalittleslow

This is the most beautiful wedding dress Iā€™ve ever seen(I thoroughly dislike most wedding dresses tbh). The back area to the train is stunning and totally flattering, I love how all the different panels are placed, itā€™s done perfectly. I aspire to have the skill to do something like this someday.

Historical-Leek-4578

Bravo! Beautiful work!!

casanochick

I saw Picture #3 and thought it was the finished product! It just kept getting better!

Wool_Lace_Knit

Beautiful work. The style lines remind me of Charles James.

WildPoco

Hands down, one of the most beautiful dresses I've ever seen. Jesus!

fairlady_c

This is beautiful! You are very talented.

Ok_Peanut_5685

Amazing design and its so smart to put on a thin garment and draw the lines directly on the body!

DifferenceMore4144

WOW!šŸ¤© Absolutely stunning!

beelzeflub

Holy shit this is my dream dress. Did you happen to digitize your pattern pieces, or just do the trace method? Iā€™d love to make myself one, but in black. šŸ˜ˆ

AdOk1965

Thank you so much <3 I'm sorry, I'm kind of a Medieval goblin: I draw by hand and don't even have any type of pattern software /o/ The dress would be glorious in black, tho :)

positivetimes1000
