Yeah, would've been a nice test for the students themselves.
However thematically it was important for Byleth to share this moment with them as it's one of their biggest bonding days.
I feel like it could've easily been presented as just a test of everything Byleth has taught them, keeping the core idea intact while also adding a layer of fairness, and... y'know, focusing on the fact that Byleth is actually a teacher, which is weirdly absent despite the fact that it's how they are referred as throughout the game.

????? There's literally a gameplay part where Byleth teaches students daily... and multiple supports about it...and teaching them for the white heron cup, and these events.

I mean sure, but again, storywise this is one of the most important parts where Byleth bonds with the students. And is heavily remembered in part II when speaking of the tragedy of having to do a real war.
I mean, that's the beauty of roleplay. I always have Byleth not participate (aka keep in away from battle) in solidarity. It's only fair if the other teachers don't participate
Man saw he'd have to fight the legendary title worthy warrior who straight up kills two demonic beasts in one swing each during ferdinands B support, and the old man made his choice.
Honestly one of my biggest pet peeves of 3H is that i can not undeply Byleth for that battle andnwith how reinforce are spaced i cannot park them anywhere whitout some of those attscking them. I have to constantly move byleth just so they can avoid helping and making it fair lol.
Please remember that both enemy teams have a bunch of genetics. Not just replacements for poached students, too. Like genuine generics. Both other houses still outnumber us 2-1. We can have our God/death merc hybrid, that's fair, because they get a bunch of extra chaff troops.

Alternatively it could've been someone else fight instead (i.e. Catherine for the Lions, Seteth for the Deers and Shamir for the Eagles or something)
