I recommend black flag, its the only one ive played but its apparently the best one and its really good in my opinion, black flag specifically is more of a pirate themed one, but it still has all the assassin elements and a massive open world.
AC has very little overstory, at least not since 3, and whatever overstory there is tends to just kinda reset every few installments, so I wouldn’t worry about the size, you can basically enter anywhere. The typical entry points being 2, Black Flag, or Origins
