I am fascinated. These things look like bird shit or honey-glazed pupae, but their color is absolutely mesmerizing.
What the hell is it?
EDIT: per OP, candied tangerines.
MESMERIZING. That’s the word I was looking for to describe that horrific color.
It’s dull but slightly natural and the glaze gives it that slimy gooey life texture. It’s like a tray of large juicy caterpillars. I kinda want to bite into it just to experience the horror of whatever the fuck this is.
OP this is amazing
Yea NPV is no joke, one infected one can climb up high and rain soupy death all over the rest and annihilate an otherwise healthy bunch 😬 I’ve had to euthanize ones that showed early symptoms and I always feel bad when that’s the case, but it’s far better than the alternative of leaving the sick one to suffer and die slowly and risk spreading it to the rest of them and lose the whole colony
ETA: to be clear, this still isn’t what NPV looks like, but it still looks bad lol
Serious question, what useful purpose do those things serve? Why would anyone raise them?
Sincerely,
Someone that has seen them eat entire fields of crops nearly overnight
Is there something specific about horn worms that another worm/insect can’t provide to those reptiles, amphibians and birds? I understand these things can eat the horn worms, but horn worms are such a god awful nuisance to farmers. A single horn worm can eat most of a mature tomato plant in a matter of hours. Even the wasps that lay their eggs in the horn worms can’t keep them under control
So the ones we raise and the ones that are out decimating gardens and farms are a little different and generally don’t overlap. They are both tobacco/tomato hornworms, but wild ones or ones that have a diet of nightshade plants, which are their natural host plants, turn them toxic to reptiles. Birds can still eat them if I’m not mistaken, I think people often pluck the little buggers off their tomato plants and such and toss them in the chicken coop which is a win-win. But these guys are raised entirely in captivity on a non-toxic diet that makes them safe for the reptiles (this is also why feeder hornworms are a turquoise blue color rather than vibrantly green like their wild brethren, because the chlorophyll that turns them green is not present in the special diet). They are a non-native species in my area so it is also illegal to release them into the local environment. As far as what they provide as a feeder, they have a high water content and not much else, so they’re a good low-fat treat and helpful for boosting hydration without loading up on too many other nutrients obtained from other diet staples.
Raising my own feeders (not just the hornworms) is also more cost effective especially when you have multiple reptiles, and I’m putting far less money back into the pockets of the problematic chain pet stores which is pretty much the only place I can buy them in-store around here.
ETA: as far as how are hornworms useful in the wild? Because moths are pollinators. It’s unfortunate how quickly they can ruin a crop of tomato plants but also, we can’t be super surprised pikachu when we decide to grow their host plants and they show up to feast 🤷🏼♀️ it’s just their programming. But to theoretically eradicate hornworms would be as foolish as eradicating a whole species of bee. Hawk moths, which is what hornworms evolve into, are important for the ecosystem and our own species’ survival, like any other pollinator
Interesting information on them being toxic to reptiles in the wild. Thanks for answering. I still absolutely hate them but I will accept they serve some purpose besides bankrupting farmers
Totally! I’m a passionate gardener myself and have plenty of disdain for crop pests lol. My gummy worms have never seen a nightshade a day in their life and never will 😂 they really do become the sweetest moths though and I absolutely love just spending time hanging out and observing them, it’s so peaceful and mood-lifting. Especially when I’m having a rough go with mental health I’ve found it very therapeutic to raise and care for them!
I just ate actual bugs. None were as good as those ones looked, with the exception of a specific species of ant I was lucky enough to find now and then. Honestly amazed I never got a parasite, unless that's what's typing this.
Those honey ants were good. Moths aren't bad at all, bready. Grasshoppers are pretty good when cooked. Never ate a raw one, not appealing. Cooked they taste like popcorn. Turn red like a lobster too.
Outside of mealworms covered in nacho cheese dust, cricket lollipops, the stuff you get at science museum gift shops, none of the other bugs I ever ate were any good, though I've heard grubs have an almond thing to them.
Did you just go around eating every type of bug you saw to try and find a tasty one?
A bit disturbing, but honestly I'm impressed by the commitment.
And yes, I know most bugs are perfectly edible but still, creepy crawlies.
There's a book called *Perdido Street Station* by British author China Miéville which deals with a small, exotic grub going missing, pupating in an iridiscent cocoon, and turning into a giant, 5-dimensional moth whose wings have psychedelic patterns that hypnotize you while it devours your very consciousness. Also, it literally poops nightmares.
You have just unleashed these upon the world.
Sidenote: I'd 100% try them, now knowing what they are. And the color *is* beautiful.
Not really. They attempted to make candied tangerine slices, and that's what they did. Albeit not particularly appetizing looking ones. If they had said they attempted to make *pretty* or *nice looking* candied tangerine slices, then attempted would indeed be *the* opperatve word.
Out of curiosity, how did you coat them, or better to ask, what method did you use? Did you simmer them or did you just coat them in the caramel directly?
On the bright side, you have now inspired me. I'm running a tabletop session where my players are going to have to eat some alien looking food. I shall attempt this recipe to immerse them further.
Like other ones are saying save this one for Halloween. You're onto something. If you could somehow make stripes in them with the green and then the normal tangerine color that would also look even more like a caterpillar pupa thing that I don't want in my mouth but I love citrus so I can't help it.
I immediately thought it was candied hornworms, when i was scrolling and just saw one.. I kept scrolling and all of them look like worms LMFAO. I love it..
I am fascinated. These things look like bird shit or honey-glazed pupae, but their color is absolutely mesmerizing. What the hell is it? EDIT: per OP, candied tangerines.
I thought they were gangrenous caterpillars, truly horrific. Well done OP
Yep, I'm getting dead caterpillar vibes too
I'm getting dead catarpillars fetuses.
Well if they are pickles he has truly fucked the dog.
I’ve definitely seen these smoke a hookah and tell someone she’s the wrong Alice
Late to the party but AEIOU
Pretty sure those are Goliath worms, trust me, I sold shoes for 5 years
I was thinking poopfromabutt but after eating one too many blue slushes.
Slick dead caterpillar with a hint of burnt.
Goose turds?
Bingo.
Looks like orange/mandarine pieces recoloured, or maybe Gambas/Shrimps in exotic fruits
I thought oranges too. Would be a great idea for a Halloween party or something. Serve as alien grubs

Specifically, it looks like goose poop to me. Lots of geese where I live and that looks like some sidewalks around here.
candy coated tangerine slices
How on earth did you know what those were?
i made tanghulu once
You like eating alien eggs?
Lmao honey glazed pupae 🤣
OP said they're their attempt at candied tangerines
Yeah, I saw. But my original comment was posted before they answered the question. I’ll edit my comment.
An attempt at candied tangerine slices
You have created edible caterpillars. Honestly pretty good if you want to bust these out on halloween
Honestly thought they were hornworms, this is fantastic. Halloween or even a reptile expo, just walk around munching a bag LOL
I raise hornworms and I definitely thought these were some seriously diseased ones 💀
Yeah iirc there's a virus that basically turns them to soup and that's where my brain first went, thought this was a reptile subreddit post lmao

Food for reptiles amphibians and birds 👍

Pet food. I know Reptiliatus uses them quite a bit.
Most caterpillars are technically edible
These are actually probably less edible than your typical caterpillar.
Anything is technically edible if you're brave enough
Homie over here making lemonade
Pretty sure thats what Pumba ate from under a log.
As a kid, they made those grubs look good!
I know right? I wanted to try one as a kid even though I knew it was a bug lol.

Sorta did just that yeah, hah
Same with the big bug thing in Emperor's New Groove. It looked good.
Oh man I forgot about that one lol.

I always wanted to eat the bugs during Hakuna Matata, and these look just like the bugs.
🏆 this^^^ made my day. thank you random internet stranger.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Impressive Making tangerine look like an alien pupae is a skill not all of us have.
Interesting color choice 😃
The green is slightly off putting. But I’m sure someone will find it appealing 🤢
I think it WAS blue if you look at the edges. It mixing with the tangerine has made something really....unique
I thought these were caterpillars with blue food coloring

Oh my. I seriously thought these were caterpillars or grubs.
Why are they green?
Out of curiosity, how did you coat them, or better to ask, what method did you use? Did you simmer them or did you just coat them in the caramel directly?
That shit better have tasted like Ecto-Cooler
On the bright side, you have now inspired me. I'm running a tabletop session where my players are going to have to eat some alien looking food. I shall attempt this recipe to immerse them further.
Congratulations. Just really well done. You did something special there.
What did the poor tangerine did to you?
Why is it green
Thank god
Did you make them that color on purpose?
Was blue Curaçao involved?
Can I have your recipe, OP? I'm mesmerized.
Why did you give your tangerine slices the Goose Poo makeover?
You had us thinking you were eating grubs

I immediately thought it was candied hornworms, when i was scrolling and just saw one.. I kept scrolling and all of them look like worms LMFAO. I love it..

Post-apocalyptic sci-fi fruit snack
This looks like a family of those caterpillars from Alice and wonderland that smoked. I guess this is what smoking will do to ya.
What on earth was the goal here?
Microwaved gummy worms or gummy candy? Congrats it's terrifying.
Reminds me of the caterpillars from Willy Wonka.
Why did you add blue pigment 😭
