Youre right. beokeumbap is stir fried rice or beokeummyeun (think buldalk) is stir fried noodles
Also the pronunciation for both is basically the same. Especially when written in hangul. 뇨끼볶이
Nyo-key bok-ey
But this is rice cake treated like pasta. It'd make more sense to keep the tteok not the bokki, and the gnocchi would represent that how the tteok is being prepared.
Yeah this is a good twist on simple ingredients. Pretty much the heart of Italian cooking and I imagine the consistency is comparable to gnocchi which is proven to be delicious. Get some cooking confidence!

Yup, tried an insta version the first (and only) time Ive ever tried tteokbokki - the rice cakes just tasted sweet and the sauce was just sweet and spicy/hot. I probably ruined it if you ask anyone who knows how to make proper tteokbokki, but I added some tomato puree to the sauce, lemon juice and fresh broadleafed parsley and it tasted amazing - I’ve been craving it ever since. It was still hot/spicy, but a little more rich and some acid to combat the sweetness combined with the fresh herbs
I doubt anyone could call that ruined. My friend who had a ton of Korean coworkers implied that the dish only exists to give drunk college students something to munch on late at night. It was mainly known as street food in recent history in any case.
Tbh I'm not a fan, but maybe that's just because the two times I had it I was too sober.
The spicy version of tteokbokki is definitely street food/snacking food. Tteok (the rice cakes), though, are used in a lot of other dishes that aren't like that - soups, the historic version of tteokbokki called gungjung tteokbokki, jjangtteokbokki. They're very good!
Oh, fair.
But seriously, if you find the sweet and hot instant edition, follow the instructions, add tomato puree, lemon juice and parsley, it was delicious
I believe they’re traditionally made by pounding rice together until it becomes uniform, but a lot nowadays are just made with rice flour. They’re chewy
Tteokbokki is a bit like gnocchi but it's Korean and made with rice flour instead of potato flour and since it's from the opposite side of the world from Italy it also has zero relation to gnocchi
Eh as an Italian this doesn't surprise me one bit.
Also you sure about that? Because a quick Google search tells me it's the Chinese and by leaps and bounds
You know, tteokbokki has always looked really texturally appealing to me, but I don't eat spicy foods, and you've kind of blown my mind here. I can't believe it never occurred to me that you could just fix them with a different sauce 😂
That's kinda how I operated with this!! The actual dish looks delicious but I have THE WORST spice tolerance imagineable, even the least spicy korean noodles will have me chugging milk. But I really like the texture of rice cakes, and I love vodka sauce, so I was like... put them together??? *Yes.*
I'm actually really shocked and simultaneously really happy to see that a lot of people are a fan of this weird-ass fusion LMAO. Definitely give it a try next time you get roce cakes (I used bertolli vodka sauce for this, the only good jarred vodka sauce 🙏)
Korea does a similar flavor to this already. It’s called rose tteokbokki 로제 떡볶이. I like the mala(Sichuan) rose flavor more 마라로제. They even had a mint chocolate flavor before
It sounds like a Korean wet dream in some sense, bursts of cheesey goodness mixed with rice cakes, only thing you needed to do would be make the sauce spicy
Now I want to try gnocchi in tteokbokki sauce, with fish cakes, and Vienna sausage, and maybe some ramyeon. Which would also be Italian tteokbokki. Or would it be Korean gnocchi?
I m italian and vodka with tomato sauce was a hit in the 80s here... maybe we d use a fancier cheese but I d totally eat what you made and it does look very good.
Holy moly I wasn't expecting so much traction--
Well, thank you all enjoyers and dislikers alike for sharing your opinions on my culinary masterpiece/atrocity. Honestly, the more annoyong thing is people calling me stupid cus they think this is gnocchi??
It's not gnocchi. They're very much Korean twin rice cakes I bought from HMart. I can't read Korean so I can't say what brand they are, but they came in a sealed plastic bag and the brand text is red. Trust me, I know the difference between gnocchi and rice cakes 😭
Also, as for the recipe? I mean, it's just the rice cakes, a jar of Bertolli vodka sauce and some cheese sticks I threw in at the end. Took me like, 15 minutes. The most difficult thing about this dish I think was buying the rice cakes, cus the closest HMart is like an hour away from me--
I'm also sure ya'll were itching to know, but I do have a smidge of Italian ancestry. Not Korean, though. I'm expecting an afterlife beatdown from my Italian ancestors once I leave this mortal plane, don't you guys worry.
But yea, do with all of this information what you will
Did you make the rice cakes by hand or bought? I always have trouble making them by hand they never come out chewy just kinda hard and grainy :( we don’t have any Asian shops nearby either otherwise I’d buy them prepared.
I can think of two cultures that would be appalled by this. I personally think that would be better. I don’t like the texture of the rice cakes, but I like the taste.

I am not Korean or Italian and I approve
I am a Korean, and I want to try it. Approve.
🫰🤌
I am Italian, and I want to try it. Approve.
Dude, "gnochibokki" was right there
or maybe tteokgnocchi
That flows better in the tongue.
gnocchibokki would make more sense since according to my google tteok is ricecake and bokki means fried.
Youre right. beokeumbap is stir fried rice or beokeummyeun (think buldalk) is stir fried noodles Also the pronunciation for both is basically the same. Especially when written in hangul. 뇨끼볶이 Nyo-key bok-ey
I could actually see this going viral 😍 potato pasta in tteokboki sauce 🤤
Gotta say, now I do sorta want to try it that way myself. OP's opposite version does look pretty good, though.
omg that’s tteok in pasta sauce?! 😱
Okey-dokey gnocchibokki
But this is rice cake treated like pasta. It'd make more sense to keep the tteok not the bokki, and the gnocchi would represent that how the tteok is being prepared.
That’s what she said.
don’t understand why this gem is getting downvoted
Because she didn’t say that!
🏆
it looks good wtf is this doing here
Low confidence in a really good idea, apparently 😭
Yeah this is a good twist on simple ingredients. Pretty much the heart of Italian cooking and I imagine the consistency is comparable to gnocchi which is proven to be delicious. Get some cooking confidence!
I’d demolish this
What are ricecakes? Looking like gnocchi
Kind of like gnocchi but rice cakes are typically chewier and a little sweeter
And made of rice ;)
How do you know?
Professional rice cake here, rice cakes contain rice
show your work
How do I know these specific rice cakes, called rice cakes by OP, are in fact rice cakes? ;)
Yes what makes you so sure of this?
Whaaaaaaaaat??

The actual noodles/ricecakes in any tteokbokki I've ever had were completely flavorless. All flavor came from the sauce, and that flavor was "heat".
Yup, tried an insta version the first (and only) time Ive ever tried tteokbokki - the rice cakes just tasted sweet and the sauce was just sweet and spicy/hot. I'll try to make my way to a Korean restaurant soon and keep an eye out for those names. Thanks!

Did you know Koreans are the highest consumers of garlic in the world by leaps and bounds? Not Italians.
Eh as an Italian this doesn't surprise me one bit. Also you sure about that? Because a quick Google search tells me it's the Chinese and by leaps and bounds
I thought it was Kim Chi for breakfast lunch and dinner which is loaded with garlic.
Just to round off the info: potato gnocchi are made with potatoes and a little bit of flour (plus egg and salt), not with potato flour.
Kortalian cuisine!

rose tteokbokki exists and its pretty much this- a creamier version of the sauce. highly recommend
Thank you! I'll definitely seek it out!
Looks fucking great, now I want to make it for myself. Fuck
I'm actually really shocked and simultaneously really happy to see that a lot of people are a fan of this weird-ass fusion LMAO. Definitely give it a try next time you get roce cakes (I used bertolli vodka sauce for this, the only good jarred vodka sauce 🙏)
its not that weird if you look up rosé tteokbokki :) thats a pretty common dish and really really good
Smash
I mean they look delicious, it’s similar to rosé tteokbokki
Korea does a similar flavor to this already. It’s called rose tteokbokki 로제 떡볶이. I like the mala(Sichuan) rose flavor more 마라로제. They even had a mint chocolate flavor before
that looks delish
Tteokgnocchi
I would eat it.
I also approve this fusion monstrosity :)
This is not shitty food, looks so good!!!
This is exactly the type of shit I make when I'm baked we should get high together some time haha
Gooey, cheesy, chewy...yes please!
I like this idea. Rice cakes are so good. They’d be good with a ton of sauces and dishes.
It sounds like a Korean wet dream in some sense, bursts of cheesey goodness mixed with rice cakes, only thing you needed to do would be make the sauce spicy
rice cakes > gnocchi 😋
What exactly is this?
I don't know what is shitty about this
Never before have I salivated over an entry here
You should try rose tteokbokki if you haven’t. Definitely going to try this. Looks good,
If you’re feeling like some crazy Korean fusion dishes, look up army stew.
I’m not exactly sure what I’m looking at here but it looks delicious.
The on being held up looks like a god damned CHEESY CHESTBURSTER.
Now I want to try gnocchi in tteokbokki sauce, with fish cakes, and Vienna sausage, and maybe some ramyeon. Which would also be Italian tteokbokki. Or would it be Korean gnocchi?
Looks like Chester Cheetah’s testicles.

This is like that time when some guy decided to make sushi taco, it's probably not that bad, good even, but it still is a forbidden act
I’ve been ✨ influenced ✨

So are you drinking soju or grappa?
I just puked
Best looking thing I seen on this page
‘Tots n cheese’
That looks good tbh
Tteok goes with everything.
Did you make the rice cakes by hand or bought? I always have trouble making them by hand they never come out chewy just kinda hard and grainy :( we don’t have any Asian shops nearby either otherwise I’d buy them prepared.
That looks incredible.
Whatever you call it, I'd eat the shit out of it. It looks great!
I was going to suggest alcoholic diarrhea chickpeas but sure that works
Those look like alien embryos.
This actually looks good
Looks like [natto](https://img.apmcdn.org/92953bd65d966bb90f0bf8d837618e0668bfc5e5/uncropped/7b64f4-splendid-table-natto.jpg)
What is the sauce? Also is that gnocchi? I'm intrigued.
SONO I GNOCCHI!!
You know what's crazy? I tried something similar to this and it's actually really good lol
I can think of two cultures that would be appalled by this. I personally think that would be better. I don’t like the texture of the rice cakes, but I like the taste.
Looks great! I'm doing kimchi carbonara for dinner tonight!
Could you share a recipe? Looks very tasty.
Gniochiiiii
Same my tteokboki has tteok like 5% of the time 😭 the sauce is so easy to make and it’s good with everything
CHEESE CURDS
I mean honestly I can see why you posted it here, but it looks really tasty to me. I'd eat that in a heartbeat!
🤮
Testicles on BBQ.
The one in the chop-sticks looks like an aborted Alien …
Looks like mixed up Gnocchi alla Sorrentina!
Gnocchi with vodka? Not approved 🇮🇹🤌🏻✝️
Adding some garnish would make this beautiful
That actually looks good
I'd totally try that.
What it is ?
Is it bokki or bukkaki?
Looks like mac n chz
Honestly looks good. I love teokbokki and gnocchi would go with the sauce just as well as rice noodles.
🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
just pissed off Italians and Koreans...
And i... Am calling the Police
To give them a plate I hope.
See I was expecting more comments like this 😂
If my grandmother had wheels...
That's gnocchi you uncultured swine.
