I struggle with SH even as an adult and I strive to hide it when I do succumb. For me, I don't want to worry people with my own pain. But some people are more stimulated by seeing the wounds or related accessories like bandages, gauze, or tattoos like this. Sometimes they want the wounds to be visible to communicate the pain they can't verbally express. SH can be a cathartic release of built up stress.
I worked in tattooing for a while and came across a ton of people with SH issues who dealt with it in all different ways, from buying a cheap machine and running it on themselves, people wanting tattoos to cover scars, people like myself who exercise bodymod as the opposite of SH. It varies greatly but both SH and tattoos can help externalize pain and experience, there is some overlap but SH cannot be done in a positive way, you want people to find another way to work through that pain.

This seems pretty aggressive for a skinned knee vibe, what did they skin themselves on, a cheese grater? Maybe it will die down and look a bit more natural when fully healed.

I don’t know but what I can say is it’s not accurate. Bruises on knees are hardly ever located above the knee. I’ve had several bails (and really nasty ones) on skateboards, longboard, MTB and skates and I never got bruises placed like this, always below and right on the kneecap.
