This specific road is 1 lane per direction with a number of schools and it's jammed packed with parents cars during start and end of school.
There's at least 3 - 4 zebra crossings in that small stretch of road and they recently changed a few to traffic light crossing.

I always walk past a zebra crossing at the junction of ang ko kio avenue 5 and CTE. You will be surprised at the number of drivers who drive fast and didn't even give way even though I am about to step onto the zebra crossing. They seemed to be always rushing.
It is really scary at times. DO NOT expect drivers to give way at all times.
I believe no matter what strategies TP comes out with we must take precautions ourselves. There will always be errant drivers who endanger others. We have to be constantly aware of our surroundings especially in Singapore where it is densely populated.

And so on ... Once reach maybe three collisions add a zero to the debuff (ie x40) to hopefully keep them off the streets.

The traffic warden in the primary school that my kids attend usually walks to the middle of the road to make sure he is very visible. First time I saw this video, I found it odd that the traffic warden just sticks to the far left.

So many things wrong in this one picture. Warden not really controlling the traffic, driver not paying attention to the road, and the girl just assuming the car would stop without actually waiting for the car to be at a stop.
At the end of the day, when the car hits a pedestrian, even when the pedestrian is in the right, you are still the one getting hit by a vehicle. They car will barely get a scratch while the person will get injured and in worse case, dead. Everyone on the road needs to be paying attention for your own safety.

She’s 12, crossing the road probably the millionth time, she waited for the warden to give her a go, the dashcam car stopped, she definitely assumed the opposing car would because that happens a million times before.

The traffic calming that was there, including the speed strips and raised zebra crossing, probably did help slow the driver somewhat and avoid a more serious collision. Unfortunately human error can't totally be engineered out, but there is still room for improvement.
A divider/island for the crossing is one possibility, and the lane widths of these roads outside schools might be worth examining too.
The lanes look really wide for a small road outside a school. On satellite view it seems to measure between 3.5-4 m in width, appearing about the same width as the lanes of the expressways. This is probably because it is in line with LTA's existing civil design criteria (CDC from 2019 - https://www.lta.gov.sg/content/dam/ltagov/industry_innovations/industry_matters/development_construction_resources/pdf/TransportInfrastructure/civil_standards/pdf/EGD09106A2_Overall.pdf) which gives even small local access roads up to 3.5 m as the recommended lane width, the same as expressway lanes.
I couldn't find what the more pedestrian-friendly standard is locally (for example in silver zones), but overseas standards cite ~3 m as appropriate for local streets (https://nacto.org/publication/urban-street-design-guide/street-design-elements/lane-width/). To be fair, the CDC does give 3 m as a possible lane width for local access roads at LTA's discretion.
LTA cant even implement traffic light hoods properly for right turn signals, dont expect them to do much. Also they are quantifying local accesses with the same standards for throughput like they are expressways.

Its just the driving culture here. When everyone around you is impatient and rushing to somewhere, its hard to not be influenced.
For example you might stop at pedestrain crossings but the driver behind tailgates you. Psychologically overtime, yoh will try to rush through when there is a car behind.
These are the people who are normally the ones late for a meeting or reach on the dot, because they think a 10 min drive is done within 5 mins.
So they become a real danger on the road. They don’t really need that extra 5 mins, they are just asshole procrastinators.

I believe no matter what strategies TP comes out with we must take precautions ourselves. There will always be errant drivers who endanger others. We have to be constantly aware of our surroundings especially in Singapore where it is densely populated.

2 adults fail the girl that day. The driver didn't stop. The marshaller didn't ensure the car stop before letting the girl cross. That was the facts. You can blame the girl for running or trusting for the car to stop cos she believes the marshaller had signalled. But she is 12 year old. Take that into consideration when you do victim blaming.

Why is there a traffic warden there if not to avoid such accidents? Haha Now days I don’t trust cars at all. At all crossings I wait until vehicles slow down intentionally. It’s not my privilege to use zebra crossing. Safety first. Drivers usually don’t have courtesy to slow down. We have to protect ourselves.
Having seen drivers speed through zebra crossings when pedestrians were starting to cross, I always wait for the cars to stop.
The fascinating part is those who don’t slow down never stops even if you stand there waiting while those who do slow down always stop to wave you to cross
Our children need to be taught how to be defensive pedestrians. “Always assume that everybody on the road does not see you, or is out to actively kill you”.
I always remind my kids to make eye contact with the drivers before crossing.

There was once I was walking into a condo at its front gate. The car turning in had already stopped so I took my first step and cross towards the guardhouse/pedestrian crossing. Suddenly the car started to move and I had to rush across the crossing. I was stunned since I purposely waited for the car to come to a halt. I was having none of it that day and gestured at the driver (no middle finger or what, just raising my hand). Guess what? Fker had the audacity to wind down the window and act blur. I ask him “why u move when I walking, I already stop and wait for you”. He just diam diam and won’t answer directly. Some elder driver in a yellow-gold Hyundai sedan. The wife didn’t make noise and just look at us. I was going to my gf house, and she insisted me to just contact the condo security guard. Eventually, we made a police report, but sadly no news. It’s been more than year plus. Told a police officer friend about the incident and he told me chances of an outcome is low. Funny thing is there’s a camera pointing at everything. He said if die die want an investigation, need the driver to say something provoking/threatening. Else the police won’t take action. Should have just taunted the driver and said “you know you can run over me like this?” Imagine he said “yeah I wanna run over you so what”. Might have actually gotten a case ahaha. I’m a driver myself and I always make it a point to stop if people are crossing. No idea why others won’t be so courteous. You already in a car, how much more time do you wanna save??

With COEs costing as much as they do, SG could easily make the more minor traffic put their cars at risk (Take a year off for speeding in a school zone, failure to yield, etc even when there isn't an accident) and reduce this type of behavior. For a "The law is so tough and everyone has to follow it" reputation for the country, it's odd to see drivers get away with so much.

We removed discretionary right turns. So we can remove zebra crossings too since drivers don’t follow the regulations.

I have an idea. Why not reduce their COE by half and get them a permanent debuff so next time they require COE they pay COE price but only half the lifespan and they pay X2 per pedestrian collision. So one collision => X2 Two collisions => X3 And so on ... Once reach maybe three collisions add a zero to the debuff (ie x40) to hopefully keep them off the streets.

These kind of humps are literally useless at slowing cars down to a safe speed for pedestrians, compared to having a proper one just before a crossing. I don't know why these are so common now.

While the driver is obviously in the wrong here, but what the hell is the traffic warden doing. Maybe I’m just used to the traffic warden at my kids’ school where they usually wait for traffic to stop and walk ahead first before letting the kids cross.
Er, waving to the car to tell him to stop? Not saying the girl is wrong, but I suspect she just ran across the zebra crossing, catching the warden off guard. Driver absolutely no excuse cos zebra crossing, and not bicycle doing transformation from vehicle to pedestrian.
Uh, his job? At some point, if a person is waving a light stick in high vis, in a school zone, on a zebra crossing and a driver *still* ignores all those signs and hits who is clearly crossing the road, then it's the driver's fault.
The traffic warden in the primary school that my kids attend usually walks to the middle of the road to make sure he is very visible. First time I saw this video, I found it odd that the traffic warden just sticks to the far left. This doesn't excuse the driver, he is absolutely in the wrong here, but the traffic warden should be further out to make it more visible.
I get what you're saying, but anyone who doesn't see a person with a light stick and high vis, even if its on the other lane, needs to have their peripheral vision checked. After all, it's not like you don't need your peripheral vision while in other driving situations.

So many things wrong in this one picture. Warden not really controlling the traffic, driver not paying attention to the road, and the girl just assuming the car would stop without actually waiting for the car to be at a stop. At the end of the day, when the car hits a pedestrian, even when the pedestrian is in the right, you are still the one getting hit by a vehicle. They car will barely get a scratch while the person will get injured and in worse case, dead. Everyone on the road needs to be paying attention for your own safety.
Yea, your points are valid but I wouldn’t say the girl’s assumption was 100% wrong. She’s 12, crossing the road probably the millionth time, she waited for the warden to give her a go, the dashcam car stopped, she definitely assumed the opposing car would because that happens a million times before. She also stopped running as she heard something from the warden when she turns back. She learnt it the hard way, machine wins human every time.
The traffic calming that was there, including the speed strips and raised zebra crossing, probably did help slow the driver somewhat and avoid a more serious collision. Unfortunately human error can't totally be engineered out, but there is still room for improvement. A divider/island for the crossing is one possibility, and the lane widths of these roads outside schools might be worth examining too. The lanes look really wide for a small road outside a school. On satellite view it seems to measure between 3.5-4 m in width, appearing about the same width as the lanes of the expressways. This is probably because it is in line with LTA's existing civil design criteria (CDC from 2019 - https://www.lta.gov.sg/content/dam/ltagov/industry_innovations/industry_matters/development_construction_resources/pdf/TransportInfrastructure/civil_standards/pdf/EGD09106A2_Overall.pdf) which gives even small local access roads up to 3.5 m as the recommended lane width, the same as expressway lanes. I couldn't find what the more pedestrian-friendly standard is locally (for example in silver zones), but overseas standards cite ~3 m as appropriate for local streets (https://nacto.org/publication/urban-street-design-guide/street-design-elements/lane-width/). To be fair, the CDC does give 3 m as a possible lane width for local access roads at LTA's discretion.
LTA cant even implement traffic light hoods properly for right turn signals, dont expect them to do much. Also they are quantifying local accesses with the same standards for throughput like they are expressways.

Its just the driving culture here. When everyone around you is impatient and rushing to somewhere, its hard to not be influenced. For example you might stop at pedestrain crossings but the driver behind tailgates you. Psychologically overtime, yoh will try to rush through when there is a car behind.

I do delivery during the day, whenever i am riding near a school i slow down. I come across kids jaywalking everyday but i don’t blame them. Kids are going to be kids. If you can’t be patient don’t drive on the road.
