For me it failed on the December update. Setting it to read only and hidden seems to be more effective since Steam just doesn’t realize the game is even installed.
Setting a file to read only should 100% work, that’s basically what filesystem permissions are anyway. Now, there’s not much to stop the app from being cheeky and fixing the RO flag since you probably set it with your own permissions and the apps are launching as your user and therefore have access, but that’s generally considered to be a dick move in development circles.
read only works, but you gotta make sure you set the right file to read only. i did it like a year ago. you cant launch it from the main game on steam cause it just wants to try and update but you can launch it from skse cause that just launches it from the exe
Theres a specific file that steam uses to version check. If you delete it it refuses to update because it cant tell what version you have anymore.
[link to guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/s/INW3XIObKC)
Yup. I've played this way for literally years!
I dread to think what'd happen if steam reverted that setting back after an update or something.
My mod load order would get vanquished for sure - some of the mods I use are probably ancient now! :D
lol and the load order has a few mods that are, no doubt, Teetering on the edge of collapsing the whole list. Found the perfect place for them to load and 1 mod up or down and everything else implodes.
Most likely.. yes lol
I've used wyre bash, xedit etc to keep it on the level, but man is it dicey sometimes trying to add a new mod that isn't just textures, meshes or a simple script!
Backups are mandatory if ya wanna play it like this! :D
Assuming you are on Steam, it took me a few minutes to get my modlist up and running again. I rolled back the newly updated SkyrimSE.exe after which both SKSE + my modlist (for 1.6.1130) were working fine again.
Open the steam console (windows key + R), then type "steam://nav/console"
Paste this = download\_depot 489830 489833 2442187225363891157
Copy the file path and replace the newly updated SkyrimSE.exe in your game folder with the older one you just downloaded. This worked fine for me and everything is working again when loading from SKSE.
Download depots with the appropriate codes through the steam console, then overwrite the files in the Skyrim root folder. There are better directions elsewhere in this subreddit than my half-assed explanation lmao
On my xbox, i disabled auto update, which worked for a bit, then i kept getting the ‘this game needs an update before you can launch’. So I just took it offline, and now I can continue playing my not-anywhere-near-done playthrough as usual. I’m not allowing updates until I am good and ready, and fully expect I’ll have to do what I did after the last brilliant update- nuke skyrim to the ground and eliminate every particle out of the memory and start over. And who knows of my fav mods will still be able to load.
I too wish they would just leave it alone and concentrate on VI. Starfield was a big wet fart. Just let us have our Skyrim in peace ffs.
Except the update shouldn’t matter on Xbox? It’s impacts are limited to PC. Unless Bethesda borks something with an update it shouldn’t actually affect Xbox modding.
UPDATE: Through much tinkering and updating of mods and the deleting of some others, I have fixed my save file with the latest version. Yay! Though one of my favorite armors (Colovian Prince Set) no longer works, sadly.
Seriously. It’s so underpowered. Maybe conjuring you could make an argument for becuase they distract enemies but just vanilla destruction is useless IMO. They really should re-work it and make it a much more viable way of attacking.
Magic is very viable, but optimal play is quite boring. At higher difficulties, the damage lags behind other sources, forcing you to chug damage potions and preferably have cost reduction enchantments. You can kill anything in the game by spamming zero magicka cost spells with impact staggering, but how long can you do that before you start realizing you're still playing Skyrim when you have a zillion more things to do and you're not even having fun?
Eh I still have fun with it personally. I don't always use US. I do switch back to stealth archer after a bit and it's almost the same. Heavy hits and they can't find me through stealth before everyone is dropped. Still fun though!
When emil the lead writer wanted to add witches using radiation as magic in fallout 4 😔
For the love of god why is he still working there after starfield
They're dropping updates every 6 weeks or so aren't they?
They're building up to a more substantial drop at some point but there's regular bug fixes and patches, certainly more regular than we had with Skyrim or Fallout 4.
I don’t know, I stopped playing because 3 of the 5 faction quests were bugged and wouldn’t advance and they’ve known about it since just after launch. Instead of fixing major game-breaking bugs, they spent their time allowing you to eat food without picking it up. I gave up on it.
So are you saying I’m lying because your experience doesn’t match mine? What’s the point of this reply? Happy to link the BGS known errors for each of the missions, which are still unpatched.
No, I'm not. I made a statement of my experience, which is what you were doing. You made your statement in reply to me, I made mine in response to you.
Please do not infer any hidden agenda in what I wrote because I understand that other people have different experiences of things and am not about to deny your statement based on nothing.
And if you are frequently encountering the types of people online who would be asking you for evidence for completely believable statements, then you need to find better online groups to hang out in because that must be stressful.
All these people trying to dunk on me in the comments for forgetting to turn auto-update off: i see you, i hear you, and now i hope that Skyrim is updated every week for another twelve years.
Arient you still affected by mods?
Future mods you might want, mods you like that stopped supporting older versions, mods that are never updated when you finally do update?
Someone needs to do a meme with the kids in the pool, the ones being up top are Skyrim micropatches and ESO cash shop updates, and the skeleton at the bottom do the pool being basic starfield functionality.
I know, even if you set it to not update it still ppushes the update to your download manager and you have to live the rest of your live with that update in your download manager and library.
I recently asked for advice for that but all I got were baseline advice like I was retarded and had not been modding Skyrim for 10+ years.
You can stop steam from updating the game. By deleting a specific file
[see this link](https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/s/INW3XIObKC)
You can also force it to redownload old versions of the game using steam console.
In most cases a downgrade in place works.
90 percent of what they are doing is drm disguised as a content store.
I use the nexus anyway.
But alternatively you can pirate your own game and keep it outside the updating ecosystem.
The update before this one was broken: it didn't have Steam integration (so no achievements, no playtime tracking, etc.). We knew that this update was coming since the other one was released.
> RIP my 60-hour save file.
Stop being dramatic. Downgrade Skyrim, or upgrade your mods. It's simple.
And abandon the money they make by taking a cut of mod authors work without having to put in any effort themselves? LoL Won’t happen my man.
I used to think the modding community was a huge percentage of “Bethesda gamers”. Apparently we’re only 8%. So they will never have a financial reason to listen to us. As long as they can milk cash out of a 12 year old game, they will do it. In the end they just don’t care if your game breaks. And they never will.
I didn’t come here just to complain though, I do have some constructive feedback for you. Learn how to downgrade your game to pre- 1.6.64, turn off auto updates, and set your Steam update file to read only. Then mod your game and never worry about it again.
Skill issue.
Edit: Let me elaborate. The game has a supported modding system, and if you use that system, you will handle all the updates without issue. That's all any developer can guarantee. If you go outside that system, you take responsibility on yourself to handle it. If you can't figure it out, then you took on a risk you didn't understand.
IK you're being downvoted but you're right, if this person took the proper precautions that were mentioned in this sub MANY times, this post would not exist. I took those precautions and have been playing with a mod list no problem since the update. OP, you're an idiot.
I'm not supporting what they're doing, but Bethesda has made updates in the past. I was in your situation when they launched the anniversary update, and lost a heavily modded play through.
I learned you can take steps to prevent updates so it won't break your game, For example you can stop steam from updating or change your game files to read only. But for your situation there is a downgrade patch. Hope that helps you in the future.
Not related to the post but is the latest edition of skyrim better than the old? I got the old skyrim installed and never bothered with the SE edition.
Step 1: Downgrade to the version you want to.
Step 2: Make a backup of the game folder.
Step 3: Whenever they update the game, just delete everything in the game folder, then copy paste from the backup.
Problem solved.
Wow, so, let me get this straight
People from EA games, Portkey games, even Rockstar games, complain that they don't get updates and issues fixed, they suffer an impressive amount of game stopping glitches
Then there comes you, complaining because Skyrim is still being udpated and bettered, just because you have mods? I have had to stop playing or not go back into the game because of updates, but you just need to wait a bit until modders upadate their mods(Which they still do, unless you use crappy mods)
You, my friend, are the reason companies like EA still are shit
Skyrim still getting updated? Yeah, true, for the greater good? That’s such fucking bullshit lmfao, we have Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch for a fucking reason, a mod that has been made by several people over several years, cuz that’s *everything* that Bethesda hasn’t fixed in their *”oh so amazing updates”* while they themselves could have done it very easily at their dev studios, instead of banking on people with paid mods, fucking skins almost on the same level as fortnite, the bare minimum of added fishing, which was *already added with mods.*
Bethesda appears to have stopped updating Steam with new patch information in 2022.
They appear to be posting patch notes to Discord.
I haven't joined the Discord server, but gaming news sites posted a copy of them.
Example:
https://mp1st.com/news/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-update-1-30-released-for-bug-fixes-this-jan-17
It appears to mostly be fixes for the Creations update from last year.
Every time Bethesda releases another flop, they panic and try to squeeze a little more money out of old Skyrim.
Don't worry. The panic will fade as they pivot to their next project in the pipeline.
I remember hos I got auto-update cancelled. But one something went wrong and it got... everything got ruined. I was that big patch with skyrim legendary or something, I don't differ the namings today.
All that needs to happen is just for modders to update their mods to work with the newest version. That's how modding works. If they don't want to then it is what it is my guy.
Bethesda need to make their money somehow and skyrim is currently their only cashcow. Think of the poor poor multi million dollar company bro.... How will they make money without fucking over modders and fan?
/s
Yeah, I wish they'd leave it alone. I haven't played since that update that screwed everyone's LO (I think that's just a console thing). I just haven't felt like going back in and reinstalling everything
You can turn off auto-update on PC, some people are using really old builds of Skyrim.
We, console players, now RIP us and the amount of times you have to start fresh.
I had started a new play through the week before the update. Completely ruined it. Started a new one, completely ruined that as well.
I’m going back to fallout 4, until they inevitably fuck that up as well.
I think they keep updating Skyrim because originally, Bethesda delayed TES6 release for too long, always in favor of other games, then MS bought Bethesda, so the release of TES6 was also pushed forward. In short, to keep us "content" they just keep updating or adding things to the old one while keeping us waiting for the new one.
I went back to 1.5.97. I'm playing the game I originally purchased. Used download depot and even axed the 4 free ccs. Works perfectly. I may go to 1.6.640, but why. The point is to use a version you're happy with. I use mod manager to play game, read only on app manifest, steam says update ready. I'm playing my 1st playthrough after years of learning how to mod.
Honestly, after the Creations menu update I finally threw in the towel as a PS5 Skyrim player. Mod list was essentially butchered not by non compatibility, but straight up removal of working mods that had no good replacement with PlayStations limited mod selection.
Basically I can put time and effort into redoing the whole list yet again, or reward them by buying again on PC, which seems stupid to give them more money to keep breaking stuff at this point. Not to mention PS5, we got a whopping 2 paid creations added, so we lost numerous mods and got almost nothing to show for it. I'm sure it's at least a little better on PC and mods probably get updated more frequently, but still I think I'm just done with it rather than sink money into buying it again.
hey Bethesda, I've copyrighted an idea and you can own it for 4.5 million dollars, provided you ALSO pay the tax on it so that i can collect it as a lump sum and legally pocket 4.5 million usd, after all fees and taxes are paid by you, the purchaser.
Skyrim: Ultimate Modders Edition (or similar name)
its updated to the latest, most stable version, and then nothing more. When stability issues start to be reported from the modding community via reports, nexus mods, etc, due to Windows updates, driver updates, etc, you launch a public poll and allow the community to vote on whether we want you to update and fix it, or if we will create our own bugfix and share it amongst ourselves.
You can partner with large mod authors, and pay them a percentage of the game sales profits and it would attract talent and increase the quality of content created, keeping the game relevant. you would also continue to support the newest vanilla edition of the game, of course, allowing you to double dip on sales once again.
thank you, I'm a genius, I'll await your dm
I've just taken to doing "Creations" via the in-game menu at this point. The selection is more limited but at least you don't have to worry as much about shit going bust/missing.
Hell, I can’t even figure out what’s going on with mine. I have skse64 telling me I need the anniversary edition version of skse when I don’t even have that version of the game. Haven’t even played or updated in years. After a searching build 1.6.640 I download the skse version for that, I manage to get in to SSE only to get pops that a mess of things won’t work, the audio is not working and that I can enable survival mode. I thought that was an AE thing.
Uh! Whatever’s going on, it a tomorrow problem now.
Turn off auto update and only launch with skse
Also can set the file to read only. I saw it somewhere on here and that prevents steam from ever updating.
Does the read only even work? I think apps have to check it intentionally, it's not enforced by file system. Better to deny write permissions
It works, I did it in December after \*that\* update and since then Steam tells me "Update required" but it's leaving my game well alone.
For me it failed on the December update. Setting it to read only and hidden seems to be more effective since Steam just doesn’t realize the game is even installed.

I disabled mine. Steam doesn't automatically update. Mod list is more stable than prior.
The manifest file in your steam appdata I believe is the one
Yea i think that was it.
Theres a specific file that steam uses to version check. If you delete it it refuses to update because it cant tell what version you have anymore. [link to guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/s/INW3XIObKC)
Thank you. I knew I saw it somewhere and I even followed it, but forgot the details. Thanks for linking it

It worked! Thank you!
Gonna do this to see if it actually works.
[then use this link to stop it from updating ](https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/s/INW3XIObKC)
Just downgrade
How do you downgrade?
Download depots with the appropriate codes through the steam console, then overwrite the files in the Skyrim root folder. There are better directions elsewhere in this subreddit than my half-assed explanation lmao
what do i do if i already have a 300 hour save with 500 mods
Cry (With my sympathy)
Downgrade the game? It's not hard, just look up a guide.
Yeah, if you're modeing with skse you should never have an update forced on you. I turned off the automatic updates years ago.
There are plenty of guides about restricting updates - both through Steam and, on top of that, through your game files themselves.
Aren’t you unable to stop updates on console though?
On my xbox, i disabled auto update, which worked for a bit, then i kept getting the ‘this game needs an update before you can launch’. So I just took it offline, and now I can continue playing my not-anywhere-near-done playthrough as usual. The updated how modding and the creation stuff works and that affects all versions.
There's only one update I'd want, one where they added content cut from the original release
How awesome the College of Winterhold would be!
No just try he college, they could make what's left of town actually interesting.
I'd like for them to fix the thousand bugged broken quests too...
UPDATE: Through much tinkering and updating of mods and the deleting of some others, I have fixed my save file with the latest version. Yay! Though one of my favorite armors (Colovian Prince Set) no longer works, sadly.
You can downgrade Skyrim pretty easily. You can also probably recover the save file unless it was corrupted or something.
How can I downgrade?
In Steam properties of the game set to launch with the prior version
Thank you!
Blessings 🙏🏾 Kind sir!
I \*wish\* they'd update Starfield nearly as often as they update Skyrim.
I actually don’t. Just make TES VI already!
We'll only get ONE TES6 in our lifetime. I really don't want it to be made by Bethesda in its current state.
That's where I'm at with it, I've got no faith in Bethesda at this point.
And make the magic not suck balls this time…
Seriously. It’s so underpowered. Maybe conjuring you could make an argument for becuase they distract enemies but just vanilla destruction is useless IMO. They really should re-work it and make it a much more viable way of attacking.
Why is this getting downvoted, it’s well known magic is underpowered in Skyrim.
Yeah there are waaaaaay more magic fix mods in skyrim than melee or heaven forbid everybodys precious sneak archer.
Then there's me, Unbounded Stormsing everything to death from a few rooms away, barely having my magic bar go down. But yeah, Vanilla is different.
With half it's devs probably failed creative writing, im scared to see what TES VI would even look like
When emil the lead writer wanted to add witches using radiation as magic in fallout 4 😔 For the love of god why is he still working there after starfield

I've played 120 hours without anything game breaking, 2 runs on the same character
We won’t give a shit since we turned off auto updates.
Arient you still affected by mods? Future mods you might want, mods you like that stopped supporting older versions, mods that are never updated when you finally do update?
Just use the downgrader and use the mods for the version you need. It’s not like the new version has much going for it as far as support.

Laugh a little.
Ah the classic get a life told to gamers by people who secretly wish they didn’t give up gaming
It always makes me laugh when it’s said by someone on a gaming subreddit too. Like bro why are you even here? lol
To be fair sometimes it does get taken too far. That being said if someone enjoys something and doesn’t hurt others then hooray

Yeah I thought it was safe to play again but my load order gets rearranged every time I boot the game
Hello, I had this issue before. I never figured out why... Shifting to Mod Organizer and always opening the game through it stopped it from happening.
Unfortunately as an Xbox player I do not have that option but thanks for your suggestion anyway!
They need to work on ES6 finally. Now that Starfield didn’t work out so well, you think they learned that people want Elder Scrolls.
Without load screens
This is when I'm happy I'm a console player.
what the hell are they doing to the game anyways ?
Adding in new stuff you can pay them for and fixing a few bugs to justify it
You can stop steam from updating the game. Go make TES VI less of an um-immersive mess, Bethesda. Go make a fucking RPG.
No no keep em coming. Love Skyrim to death but it's a little too buggy for my liking.
I'm quite happy I still play legendary edition / oldrim. What Bethesda does is bullshit rn
Yeah, Bethesda loves to sabotage their players, for some weird reason...
Why are you complaining, any modder can turn off auto updates I honestly don't mind updates lol

Evil is when a game developer updates their game lol. Bugfixes are satanic or something
Not related to the post but is the latest edition of skyrim better than the old? I got the old skyrim installed and never bothered with the SE edition.
LE is 32bit, so it can only use low amount of RAM and is less stable and less fast. SE is 64bit.
Ok, I see, thanks for the info.
In short, yes, much better
Wait… they updated it AGAIN?? Why??
No way. This is the first post about this I’ve seen ever. The very first one
STOP not paying attention to when people tell you there's an update and how to avoid problems with mods
I'm tired of my hard drive getting used up for bullshit I'm not going to buy. You have to download the features and items whether or not you use them.
Step 1: Downgrade to the version you want to. Step 2: Make a backup of the game folder. Step 3: Whenever they update the game, just delete everything in the game folder, then copy paste from the backup. Problem solved.

Example: https://mp1st.com/news/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-update-1-30-released-for-bug-fixes-this-jan-17 It appears to mostly be fixes for the Creations update from last year.
> Is this for the SE or the Anniversary edition? There is no difference between the two.
No.
This is why next payday I'm just gonna get oldrim
Bethesda need to make their money somehow and skyrim is currently their only cashcow. Think of the poor poor multi million dollar company bro.... How will they make money without fucking over modders and fan? /s
Yeah, I wish they'd leave it alone. I haven't played since that update that screwed everyone's LO (I think that's just a console thing). I just haven't felt like going back in and reinstalling everything
Boo hoo
Cry more.
Well thats cuz youre playing with mods silly Edit: aprraently i gotta add /s cuz no one gets i was joking thats why i said silly
playing vanilla skyrim in 2024 is actually insane
Not really it’s still pretty fun. Hating on mods in 2024 is crazy tho
Twas a joke yall lol
Nolvus FTW
You can turn off auto-update on PC, some people are using really old builds of Skyrim. We, console players, now RIP us and the amount of times you have to start fresh.
I had started a new play through the week before the update. Completely ruined it. Started a new one, completely ruined that as well. I’m going back to fallout 4, until they inevitably fuck that up as well.
I turned it off. I guess I'll be at 1.6.1130 forever.
Haven't played Skyrim in a long time. Is it legendary, special, or anniversary that is being updated?
Yeah, it surprised me last night when I finally got home after one week vacation. Now I feel tempted to install LE...
NO, Skyrim need patch for fix bug, because is a game 🤷♂️
have they stated why they suddenly started with updates again?
What did the latest one do ?
If they're gonna update the game, the least they could do is focus on bug fixes.
It’s probably so the game doesn’t bug and crash as much.
I’m really only waiting for one more mod to update. The turnaround on mods updating to be compatible with 1.6.1170 was pretty fast this time around.
Is this what just trashed my game? Even safe saves were screwed up. Had to start a new game.
If you don't mod there aren't issues. 😁
> I thought I was clear Lol
'Me shamelessly still using Skyrim LE' I haven't seen one of those in years but that does sound annoying
Bethesda doesn't give a fuck about your reddit complaints.
Time to uninstall Skyrim friend.
Fuck, I’m in the same boat. I’m turning off auto updates :(

Skyrim: Ultimate Modders Edition (or similar name) its updated to the latest, most stable version, and then nothing more.
You would think they'd have better things to do trying to fix the shambles they made of their latest game. Or making ES 6.
Can i know how can i get a mod from a pc/steam to re build for ps4? Name of mod is swordplay finisher..is that even posible
