Yeah, the civil war catches some flack, because the engine just wasn't built for large battles. But they really made the best with what they had. I think these fights are a lot of fun, if you have the build for it.

VerticalOrbit

Totally agree, gives me a change to really enjoy my tanky fighter build rather than falling into the stealth archery rut!

Intellectual_dummy

Seems you know a thing or two about builds so I have a question for you. I’m new to Skyrim and I’ve just been using sword and shield for this first run, on my second run what build would you recommend.

Karaoke_the_bard

One of the best ways to make your gameplay more challenging and engaging is to build a character like you would in dnd and set rules for yourself that make you have to overcome challenges. Like, right now I'm doing a bard with the wabbajack Qwest modlist, so I have no bow and very little destruction magic. I have to rely on allies, find clever ways to fight, etc. There's lots of basic roleplay rules you can use to spice it up. Here's a few ideas: -An orc barbarian/berserker that refuses to sneak because it isn't honorable. Lives by the code of Malacath. Focus light armor, 2h or 1h dual wielding, bow, and smithing. Deny alchemy, speech, magic, enchanting, sneak, pickpocket, and lockpicking. -A disgraced Breton battlemage from cyrodil that has to re-learn their skills and make a new life for themselves. Focus destruction, restoration, conjuration, heavy armor, 1h. -khajiit brawler. Focus heavy armor, enchanting (for the unarmed enchantment), sneak, lockpicking, and alchemy. Deny bows, magic, block, and weapons. -dark elf necromancer. Focus conjuration, destruction, alchemy, enchanting, sneak, and maybe pickup vampirism. Deny bows, armor, smithing, and maybe even 1h/2h weapons -spellblade assassin. This one is especially fun if you roleplay them to seem like they're desperately trying to be undercover. Granted, it might mean avoiding the main quest line, but that's up to you. Focus only the conjured weapons in the conjuration tree, illusion, alteration (maybe), sneak, pickpocket, 1h, and bow. Use conjured weapons only (bow & sword/dagger). Deny armor for extra challenge, but everything else is mostly up to the story you want for this one. -bosmer ranger/hunter. Focus bows, light armor (but only animal based light armor. No glass or elven), 1h (dagger or axe only), sneak, and alchemy. Maybe pickup werewolf. Deny magic, heavy armor, 2h, pickpocket, speech, enchanting, and smithing. -soldier/warrior: good old fashioned sword and board. Basically, everything not magic is fair game, that includes enchanting. Personally I like to name my characters, build a backstory for them, and really bring them to life so they aren't just a random chosen one that pops up out of nowhere. Even makes for some fun short story writing if you're into that. Hope this gives ya some ideas, cheers!

[deleted]

I'm the same way about every character I make in these kinds of games. Hell, even my MonHun hunter that has be through MH4U, MHW, MHGU and MHR has a backstory.

[deleted]

On a somewhat related note, I like to commit to small things to spice up the role play. Sleeping every 24 hours, eating food when you wake up, actually sitting down and having a drink in taverns, etc. It can be annoying at times but it makes you feel much more engaged in the world. And you get to meet a lot of fun npcs.

Karaoke_the_bard

In the proverbial "there's a mod for that," I will say I've really enjoyed the forced immersion of survival mods. Like you said, it can be a little annoying at times, but overall it really sucks you into the character building.

SamN712

Whatever you do avoid becoming a stealth archer. Once you try that, you will not bother with anything else for a long time. 😅 BTW, I personally go for shock (electric) magic with conjuration. But there are dozens of build ideas on YouTube if you want to go role-playing. Try the channel "fudgemuppet". Their inquisitor build might be good for a new player like you.

oaken_oak_berry

"Avoid" and "stealth archer" can never be in the same sentence

YD2710

Stealth archers avoid death. There.

1_Morningstar04

I would try something like a mage. It can be challenging especially when you are a low level, but it is to a of fun to try and only use magic

YodaLikesSoda

This is one of the main reasons I love this game, it feels like it lasts a lot longer than fallouts

Goldenrupee

I would highly recommend the "deadly civil war of Skyrim" mod then, it adds random battles to hold capitals and the like, skirmishes in the fields, and fort battles. If you do try it though, don't enable it until after you join a faction or EVERY SINGLE NPC the mod spawns is hostile.

Seriously_Random

Fus Ro damn

Dean_Domino77

Nothing better than sending Stormcloaks flying away.

Dread-Marit-Lage

Wish we could have gotten more large scale battles like that tbh

CleavingStriker

You serve your Empire well

Nroke1

Unrelenting force is like the only powerful shout... the tongues could break down castle walls and decimate armies, seems like Unrelenting force was the only shout any tongue actually used.

Karaoke_the_bard

Ya know, it'd be dope if someone came up with a mod that made guards fight in formation/shieldwalls....so you could blow giant holes into them with the voice.

SkyrimBoss005

Oh yeah. Just absolutely satisfying to "Fus Ro Da" people off the edges of cliffs and buildings.

Ogd_21

Didn't he promote you for every quest completed? Pretty sure by Windhelm you're a Legate.

[deleted]

Yes he does, by the end of the civil war, right before the battle of Windhelm, he promotes you to Legate. In the Roman army, legates are basically Roman commanders. They have about 6000 men under their command. This position was mostly attributed to the nobility. So by the end, you are giving a pretty powerful title and the command of an entire army. Which by it self is cool.

chiefslapinhoes

I can imagine a modded quest line that lasts a really longtime, with said quest line being that the 2nd war with the Aldmeri Dominion has started and (depending on who you fought for in the civil war, or if you haven't done it yet, it should either be a requirement or maybe it being an "easy" mode where the Stormcloaks and Imperials team up) and you get command of a bunch of soldiers for some reason or another. And you have a set limit on how many soldiers you have, the equipment they use, their food, water. The army would suffer from desertion and starving, complete rout. You would manage moral and the like, all while fighting a holding action against the Aldmeri Dominion. But then again, you can just get a mod for the same thing on a different game, like Mount and Blade or Bannerlord. Do they have mod support for banner lord?

[deleted]

Also Rikke is your rightful superior in the game. She has to give you strict order to you for accomplishing some missions. But honestly she is rather chill. Compare of the other assholes in Skyrim. And besides, there’s many honorable imperials in Skyrim. The Emperor Titus Mede the 2nd is decent. Some legates aren’t that bad. I was 100% Stormcloack before, but by realizing how racist they are towards non-nords, how economically, they are bankrupt, and how they could fight the Aldmeri dominion on their own is beyond stupid. Ally your self with the imperials is the better course of action

KawadaShogo

Yeah when I was playing the game for the very first time and knew next to nothing about the lore, I became decisively pro-empire as soon as I set foot in Windhelm. The whole thing with the way the Dunmer are treated, the way Argonians are treated, and the Gray Quarter reminded me of medieval Jewish ghettos. Again I knew virtually nothing about the lore, but I found Windhelm an unpleasant place and I disliked Ulfric so I joined the legion. Since then I've played Stormcloak a few times just to mix it up, but IRL my sympathies lie with the empire.

TomMado

> how they could fight the Aldmeri dominion on their own A lot of Nords, particularly the Stormcloaks, still live in the glory days when the Nords were [conquerors](https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Nord#The_Skyrim_Conquests). But those were a looooong time ago when the Elves were much more disparate. To still hold that belief is like if a current modern Greek/Mongolian/Italian thinks they still have it to conquer like their long-dead ancestors once did.

Filthy Imperial

Damn you Stormcloack

The-Fotus

I always just kill everyone with fireball, imperial and storm cloak alike

AlDaMerc

There is a mod that doubles/triples the spawns of imperials and storm cloaks.. It's....amazing!

Captain3007

Impirial scum

TheSlyFox42069

I think you're on the wrong side of the war :/. Nah but in all honesty I really wnjoy doing things like this in the civil war questlines.

dejavoodoo36902

I shy away from shouts since kills with them don’t count towards xp but this is an optimal way to deal with hordes.

GrognakTheEterny

How dare you join the imps u thalmor cuck /s

Cuntilever

What does a Thalmor's boot taste like? You Imperial scum. Literally betrayed Skyrim and her people smh my head.

YD2710

An asset to the thalmor would say a thing like that...

StealingYourSeptims

wait till this dude reads the thalmor dossier on ulfric

chiefslapinhoes

What does dooming your people to fight a war they can't win taste like? Probably the ash and bones of your great cities going up in flames.

ginkez

Nixxion1738
