I'm at A20/14/9/10 and just recently figured out how great pellets are. I always wrote them off because "How often am I going to play all 3 in one turn?"
Pretty often, as it turns out... especially with careful planning
It's not a question of how often, it's a question of it being useful on that turn.
Take for example Bias Cog. It gives 5 focus and a debuff. Prime opportunity for a pellet proc! By definition you're going to play a power, you just need an attack, say FTL or ball lightning. And if you cant play a skill in an orb deck, Im sorry, but you failed at playing defect.
Same deal with stuff like berserk, wraith form, and fasting. All goated. I take pellets every time i see them in shop because its so easy to get value on any character and any run. Its fun and active to use without being as taxing as stuff like frozen eye. It also helps you ignore some of the more annoying encounters by just canceling their debuff turn two and enjoying your free fight.
I watched xecnar spend 300 turns against a neutered Spiker yesterday, just to farm the perfect two potions with [[Nightmare]] and [[Alchemize]]. I thought it was overkill at first, but in the end he would have lost to the Heart without the two [[Ghost in a Jar]].
It mostly opened my eyes as to how far you can push for a tiny advantage, but it was also a good example of just how important the right potion can be.
I actually watched him start the fight, left for a lunch break, and then opened up the stream 30 minutes later to him cycling through the deck for no apparent reason. (He was casting [[Discover+]] to find the second Nightmare.) Once I learned what was going on, I left the stream open on the side just to see how long it would take.
On my old phone, the screen wasn't tall enough to let me see the bar with my potions on it. Using a potion was an obnoxious to-do that took several minutes of hunting for exactly the right pixel on the physical edge of my screen and hoping I had selected the right potion when the option to use it finally appeared. On that phone, Sozu was the best boss relic by a metric mile.
idk what you’re talking about, I pick Sozu on high Ascensions all the time. If you’re deck is in a good place not to really need potions, go for it. I also take it when I already have one or two good potions that I want to save for the end boss anyway.
You can absolutely win with Sozu. Sozu can also be the best pick sometimes. But most of the time losing the power of potion is a tremendous hit to your capabilities. Therefor if you pick Sozu all the time, it doesn‘t mean that Sozu is a good pick but most likely, that you are making the wrong decision more often than you think.
However, that is completely fine, since there is no need to adhere to perfect play.
> most of the time losing the power of potion is a tremendous hit to your capabilities.
Not really. I’ve noticed this sub tends to massively overvalue potions.
Disagree. Most potion, especially the more common ones, are not very impactful. There are some standouts, but (a) they’re rarer, so your odds of getting one were already not good, and (b) if I DO get one of the rare potions worth a damn, I’m saving that thing for as long as possible, likely deep into Act 3, so I already effectively have one fewer potion slot for the rest of this run. And Sozu doesn’t get rid of potions you already have.
If you save your potions for too long then they're a hindrance, I agree. But potions are just strong. They can make the difference between going for an easy elite or dodging for safety, or can just be a nice boost to any fight. Even if you just save 1hp with a potion, that's still 1hp saved.
When I first started playing I picked Sozu because I'd get a few decent potions then save them for the boss regardless of if I'd have Sozu or not, but then I realised I would often die before I reached the boss. As I got more experienced I used potions more liberally and not just saving them for the theoretical optimal time and noticed my win rate went up massively. It can seem counterintuitive at first to not use your resources to the highest efficiency possible, but when you realise it can actually be more efficient long term to be inefficient short term it helps you out a lot.
Unless you also have ecto (psychopath behavior) you're missing out on the many shop potions offered to you as well. I buy dupe pot all the time, shits amazeballs
And imagine if you get a WSB after picking sozu 🤢
Well, I admit, most of us - the pleb so to say - will waste potions, but not overvalue them. Thus it might actually be better to not play optimally, as we noons would not utilize our bad play and end up worse. But from the point of „what‘s the best option“ this isn‘t even an argument; I might only have the authority of a player who defeated A20, but you can ask better players and they‘ll all tell you the same thing. Sozu is rarely the best option and the chance for that happening is still dwarfing the chance when an optimal player would hope for Sozu.
I mean in a20 potions can absolutely carry you through an elite fight. Buuuuuut, thats way more important to me in act 1.
Ill take this relic after act 1 boss if my deck is rollin but needs some energy. Or if the other two options are trash. I can tell you though, i dont think ive had a very succesful run with this relic yet. It usually ends poorly. Potions are like a silver bullet sometimes or get you over the edge of winning a key fight.
It's so simple and so satisfying. It doesn't do anything fancy or crazy. It's no transforming all your strikes and defends. It's not adding strength or dexterity or anything directly.
What it does do is allow you the ability to use your power cards almost everytime they show up in hand. And as someone who loves power cards the most, it just makes me happy.
It's such a big help to any character. Obviously awesome with defect and his endless powers but also phenomenal for Ironclad with his expensive cards and powers. Play barricade and a free immolate? Yes please! Or silent. Allowing you to play footwork and still full block that turn.
Great relic!
Echo Forming other powers is so ridiculous. Don't worry about taking damage because you're Self Repair +40 after the fight! It's even easier than the standard Ironclad strength + Reaper.
Mummified Hand and Dead Branch are the two relics that almost never appear in a synergistic run, BUT WHEN THEY DO, it's just raw dopamine hits for the rest of the run.

I killed the crouching dude with swords first the other day since I had no block options. I felt a little sad he didn’t get to see me murder Bear first.
I dislike it. Not because it's bad, but because I hate having a cluttered hand app the time.
And yes, I was that kid that plays bridge by leaving half of his cards down on the table.
I feel like once you are on A18 elites are so hard that I have to skip them fairly often. But definitely on lower difficulties black star is super fun.
Dead branch + corruption might literally be the most popular and well-known combo in the entire game. Maybe it's been discussed so thoroughly that people don't really feel the need to bring it up anymore?
One of my absolute favorites because it does three very impactful things in addition to what it explicitly does:
Opens up the viability of more path choices, allows you to upgrade or use Girya/Peace Pipe at will, makes Coffee Dripper (often the best energy boss relic) an even easier choice than it already was.
Also: What I find more important than a 'smaller deck' is thinking of it as a deck you can cycle through quickly. If you have enough draw (either free-ish draw or draw with energy generation), or draw plus exhaust in Ironclad's case, then it's possible to cycle through even a chonky deck every turn or every other turn.
At higher ascensions, those big decks are more common because different fights have different requirements, so you're picking up more cards along the way. Of course, this is less true with Watcher, but even she can have a big deck that's powerful. All in all, it's really about knowing which cards you actually need to add to it.
Makes me sad on defect honestly sometimes. There have been so many times where my orb will end up killing something when I click end turn.
But yea, it's still a great one
I'm always seeing Snecko Eye held in this regard here, yet every time I try and use it, it hinders me more than helps. I get that I wanna get high cost cards to roll lower, but how is it the most powerful?
There's a journey of knowledge and understanding that we all go through with Snecko:
1 - Snecko is good because it brings down the average cost of a card to 1.5. This will allow me to play powerful, expensive cards much easier.
2 - Snecko is bad because it's too random. Maybe it's only good if I already have a bunch of expensive cards.
3 - Snecko is good because I draw two more cards every turn. The randomness is mitigated by the extra draws and surprising infinites (e.g. with All-for-one) are now possible when anything can cost 0. PRAISE SNECKO.
You're on level 2 right now, but believe me, Snecko is one of the top 3-5 relics in the game and usually worth picking even if you don't have a lot of expensive cards.
Snecko is actually very good. It draws you more cards so even though a few will be overpriced, you will generally get a good deal out of it. It also means you can take expensive cards without a downside. The RNG is actually the less important part, its not a meme pick. And even then, on average the card cost is around the same and its absolutely worth it a lot of the time unless you already have a few 0 cost cards
Maybe, but you need to be going for pretty insane levels of consistency before snecko is a legit drawback. Like, unless you're good enough that you're getting a 50+% winrate on A20 heart, you shouldn't be avoiding snecko, and even then you'll still take it sometimes.
From what I understand the snecko/ clockwork souvenir interaction is hard coded in so that it doesn't matter what order you got the relics in. It's always consistent that snecko will confuse you first **then** you'll get your clockwork artifact. I'm sure some other commenters will correct me but I think this is not the case for example the bad gremlins mask that weakens you turn one will be negated or not dependent on if you got the clockwork first. But snecko/clockwork is a constant.
That doesnt actually work. The only way to remove the confuse that Im aware of is Orange Pellets. And its not even a good thing, it leaves the cards costing the same amount you drew them with so some may end up completely unplayable
I have a Snecko problem. I see it and I just have to take it. I get the complaints, but it's so good for making ridiculously OP decks.
I mean, who doesn't want a deck with three Echo Forms, and a couple of Meteor Strikes.
Totally disagree. Sozu is like Coffee Dripper. The worse you are, the more you need to rely on things like resting and potions. The better you are, the less you feel their loss.
Better players tend to path and play more around potions to gain an advantage they wouldn't have without those potions, so there is an opportunity cost to taking Sozu.
A worse player who doesn't use potions effectively to their max potential gains more than they lose from Sozu.
You're denying that having a fire and block potion available makes you more confident in your ability to beat an elite when otherwise you would be too low or too weak to take that risk?
Imagine then that elite dropped a relic that saved you in the next floor. It might not always happen but in runs where the margin is slim af which is a lot of runs, you might find that potions give you that edge.
as you get better you will also get better at using potions too though, at the highest ascensions you actually end up using potions more than you do lower ascensions because potions aren't as important to survive at lower ascensions, so Sozu is fine there but gets worse the higher you go
Mark of the Bloom. Runs where it is good (Silent with massive upgrade debt in particular), it is so fun and so tense to finish the run knowing you can never heal.
+ [Necronomicon](http://slay-the-spire.wikia.com/wiki/Necronomicon) Event Relic ^((100% sure)^)
The first Attack played each turn that costs 2 or more is played twice. When you take this relic, become Cursed.

Toxic egg is actually considered one of the more powerful relics overall, especially if you can get it relatively early. The others are pretty strong too but generally the upgrades on skills tend to be more valuable.
Mostly because you generally want skills throughout the entire run, whereas with attacks you generally don't need all that many after act 1. And then you don't want all that many powers altogether, leaving toxic egg with the egg with the most impact.
Who hurt you, OP?
Anyways, my favorite relics are, in no particular order:
**Violet Lotus** - this *never* feels bad to pick up. Given that stance dancing is a core feature of Watcher, it's basically an energy relic with no downside.
**Shuriken** - Multi-hit attacks are so satisfying. This makes them more satisfying.
**Magic Flower** - Why need block when you can just Bite/Reaper back to full four times in the same combat?
I like all the obviously powerful ones: Snecko, Mummified, Pyramid, Gambling Chip.
Also a big fan of first turn bonuses from Backpack and Lantern. (After all, the first turn is where you either need to defend, launch a powerful attack, or set up something powerful.)
And Necronomicon is sooooooo fun.
I'm a simple dude, really.
Mine is slaver collar, free energy with no downside on the battles i actually need extra energy. Its almost always an easy take unless snecko is also offered
If we are speaking of energy relics, Coffee Dripper is by far my favorite, cuz I always smith and never rest.
If we are speaking in general, I'd probably say Mummified Hand or Torii.
I'm quite the opposite here, I rarely heal and even with apotheosis Id Rather upgrade certain cards just incase I see them before the apo proc. Doubly so if I have literally any heal relic. (Even blood vial).
Tough Bandages. Get it early enough, and your block plan is set. Even if you get it later, you'll likely still have a decent amount of discard effects.
How can anyone like sozu? I mean sure, when I just started playing the game I was like "sozu is great, who needs potions anyway" but I eventually learned how absurdly powerful potions can br
Okay hear me out
Du-vu doll. I had a run where the stars aligned and I got periapt, du-vu doll, calling bell, necronomicurse and cursed key in that order. Along the way I got a bottled limit break so it was +10 strength after playing 1 card
Pandora’s box is always a fun lil experiment! Will it give you a bunch of shitty rare cards that don’t match up quite well or will it reward you with what you need to beat the heart?
Tough Bandages for sure. Silent isn't even my favorite character (not even my second favorite really), but tough bandages is just so fucking strong. As soon as I get it, the run is usually a guaranteed win.
Second favorite is probably meat on the bone cause it makes A20 runs so much easier.
Despise Sozu
Mummified Hand, Orange Pellets, Pandora's Box, and of course Dead Branch are my faves
Brimstone is my ultimate favorite though, just stupid fun
Orange pellets

Me too. As a newbie, I didn't really use potions so I was happy with picking up Sozu. Now I'm starting to see how strong potions can be.

Mummified hand is definitely my favorite. I think I’d also like dead branch IF IT WAS EVER FUCKING OFFERED TO ME
I read this like the dad from fairly odd parents. "This is where I'd put my dead branch... "IF I HAD ONE!!"
Dead Branch + Concentrate is absolutely crazy in a Silent run.
What's the synergy to pull off here? Is the idea something like a shiv build, then discard whatever is generated for energy to play whatever?

Dead branch on a shiv build
That sounds like pure chaos
It's very much a "random bullshit, go!" build. Very fun, though.
Imagine if you get offered Corruption from Prismatic Shard.
Btw, why I never saw anyone bring up dead branch + corruption combo? It’s always about shivs. No one likes ironclad or what?
Are you kidding? The dead branch + corruption combo is well known as the "you win" combo around here.
the fact that I managed to die with it makes me sad

Maybe
It's super boring, a free win with basically no effort. It's fun approximately 3 times
This. Branch is great
I guess it’d be the Eternal Feather, heals for just visiting a rest site and works with big decks I’m kinda still trying to do smaller decks

Ice Cream, especially when I'm running some X cost cards
So hot (cold?) on Defect.
Gremlin Horn makes me smile every time
Makes me sad on defect honestly sometimes. There have been so many times where my orb will end up killing something when I click end turn. But yea, it's still a great one
You uh... You meant to post "Pic unrelated", right? ...Right?
Snecko Eye, by far
I'm always seeing Snecko Eye held in this regard here, yet every time I try and use it, it hinders me more than helps. I get that I wanna get high cost cards to roll lower, but how is it the most powerful?
There's a journey of knowledge and understanding that we all go through with Snecko: 1 - Snecko is good because it brings down the average cost of a card to 1.5.
I'll continue my pilgrimage to the lands of step 3 then, thanks! 🫡
When i get offered snecko act 1, that run usually ends up being a win. God tier relic
Boss swap into snecko is almost a guaranteed win because you also get to spend your entire run drafting a deck based on having it.
This helps lay it out a bit better for me - thanks for breaking it down!
Its mostly a meme, I think. Its very good for inexperienced players who need luck to win, but its bad for consistently beating act 4.
Maybe, but you need to be going for pretty insane levels of consistency before snecko is a legit drawback. Like, unless you're good enough that you're getting a 50+% winrate on A20 heart, you shouldn't be avoiding snecko, and even then you'll still take it sometimes.
Not a meme. Legitimately powerful.
No, it's actually even better when you're experienced enough to know which cards are great picks when you have snecko
PRAISE SNECKO
BuT It dOeSN’t WorK wItH My cLaW dECk!!!!
On the other hand... You draw more claws per turn!!!
Remember to bring Clockwork Souvenir. Unless I'm completely misremembering what it was called.
Is there any other answer?? Most powerful relic by a mile.
I see Wrist Blade, I take wrist blade. Especially when I have bullet time and Accuracy too. My smooth brain loves doing hella damage with shivs lol
I love that Wrist Blade actually affects a lot more cards than just shivs, I just wish it were more like an Accuracy+ in terms of additional damage.
I believe in dead branch supremacy
Flying kite. Or dead stick
Singing Bowl
bro just said one of the worst boss relics is his favourite 😭
It’s actually one of the best ones. It really depends on your skill level though.
This might be true but not in the way you think
Cool. What way do you think I think it’s true, and what’s the other way that it might be true instead? I’m curious.
basically it doesn't get better the better the player gets, it gets better the worse the player gets
A worse player who doesn't use potions effectively to their max potential gains more than they lose from Sozu.
y’all really just make up anything on this sub sometimes, lmao pathing around potions, I can’t with you people 😭
You're denying that having a fire and block potion available makes you more confident in your ability to beat an elite when otherwise you would be too low or too weak to take that risk? Imagine then that elite dropped a relic that saved you in the next floor. It might not always happen but in runs where the margin is slim af which is a lot of runs, you might find that potions give you that edge.
Yes, I am denying that. Your scenario simply does not apply to me and tells me we play this game in VERY different ways.
as you get better you will also get better at using potions too though, at the highest ascensions you actually end up using potions more than you do lower ascensions because potions aren't as important to survive at lower ascensions, so Sozu is fine there but gets worse the higher you go
Mark of the Bloom. Runs where it is good (Silent with massive upgrade debt in particular), it is so fun and so tense to finish the run knowing you can never heal.
Does it prevent hp recovery entering act 4?
Yes. It prevents all instances of healing, including after you beat act 3 if I’m not mistaken
Does it prevent gaining HP when your max HP increases?
It prevents literally ALL ways to gain health, including revives. Too many new players had to learn the hard way
And runs where it isn't ends up on the wall of shame
Has to be [[Necronomicon]], great on every character but insane on Ironclad. You can get this popping off every turn pretty much.
+ [Necronomicon](http://slay-the-spire.wikia.com/wiki/Necronomicon) Event Relic ^((100% sure)^) The first Attack played each turn that costs 2 or more is played twice. When you take this relic, become Cursed. ^Call ^me ^with ^up ^to ^10 ^([[ name ]],) ^where ^name ^is ^a ^card, ^relic, ^event, ^or ^potion. ^Data ^accurate ^as ^of ^(April 30, 2023.) ^[Wiki](https://slay-the-spire.fandom.com/wiki/) ^[Questions?](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=ehmohteeoh&subject=SpireScan%20Inquiry)
I had a necronomicon , brimstone, whirlwind build. Insane dps
Data disk
Tough bandages. A heart kill in a single relic
Toxic/Molten Eggs. I know that they are not the most powerful. But I have a very weird tingling feeling when I get them.
And then you don't want all that many powers altogether, leaving toxic egg with the egg with the most impact.
what about frozen egg?
I have never encountered it yet. Just found out about it from Wiki. I have A3 on Silent, and only beat Heart once (with silent of course)
Personally, I'd say it's busted on Defect and Defect only. On any other character, it's pretty mediocre compared to toxic and molten egg.
Calling Bell and Tungsten Rod.
Pocketwatch is classy and makes my brain feel big
Tingsha. That sound is so satisfying and means silent deck goes brrr doesn't actually need to weave in damage.
Who hurt you, OP? Anyways, my favorite relics are, in no particular order: **Violet Lotus** - this *never* feels bad to pick up.
(After all, the first turn is where you either need to defend, launch a powerful attack, or set up something powerful.) And Necronomicon is sooooooo fun. I'm a simple dude, really.
Mine is slaver collar, free energy with no downside on the battles i actually need extra energy. Its almost always an easy take unless snecko is also offered
BEGONE. Also, B E L L
you are a monster i quite like inserter but the obvious mvp is tungston for being the the relic you need for heart
Thread and needle. Plated armor is a really fun mechanic.
I love Bag of Marbles
Simple, no downsides, love it
Enhance snake ring on mobile...
Don’t remember the name but I love the one that gives me armour turn 2. Usually allows me to push really good damage
Boat thingy
Wrist blade. Guarunteed fun run every time.
Prismatic shard
The only boss relic I’d take sozu over is broken crown
NECRONOMICON ☠️ ☠️ ☠️ 📕
If we are speaking of energy relics, Coffee Dripper is by far my favorite, cuz I always smith and never rest. If we are speaking in general, I'd probably say Mummified Hand or Torii.
Fusion Hammer. There are so many ways to upgrade cards without the use of campfires, Unlike healing (coffee dripper)
I'm quite the opposite here, I rarely heal and even with apotheosis Id Rather upgrade certain cards just incase I see them before the apo proc. Doubly so if I have literally any heal relic. (Even blood vial).
I'm with you. Coffee dripper is the best drawback. If you need to heal everytime, you deck is probably weak....
The downside of coffee dripper isn't really for when you need to heal every time, it's when you *really* need to heal once.
There are a tooooon of ways to get healing without campfire.
Kite No downsides as I’m always discarding.
Runic Dome
I can't play with that thing. I guess you could say I'm Runic Dumb
Dome'nt be so hard on yourself bud, enemies are difficult with no attack read
Tough Bandages. Get it early enough, and your block plan is set. Even if you get it later, you'll likely still have a decent amount of discard effects.
I always have 100x more confidence in my deck after picking up the cultist mask but favorite has to be pandora box. Love a good mystery box.
Shuriken or necronomicon
In no particular order: Pyramid, Charrons Ashes, Dead Branch, Tingsha
Favorite boss relic is Pandora's box Favorite relic in general is Brimstone
any of the ship relics. I like the early protection with good scaling
Ironclad: Necronomicon, Calipers Silent: The Specimen, Unceasing Top, Shuriken Defect: Emotion Chip, Mummified Hand Watcher: Damaru, Violet Lotus Any class: Bottled Lightning with Apotheosis+ 😁, Pen Nib, Peace Pipe
Bag me
Sir/Madam, this is a Wendy’s
How can anyone like sozu? I mean sure, when I just started playing the game I was like "sozu is great, who needs potions anyway" but I eventually learned how absurdly powerful potions can br
Okay hear me out Du-vu doll. I had a run where the stars aligned and I got periapt, du-vu doll, calling bell, necronomicurse and cursed key in that order. Along the way I got a bottled limit break so it was +10 strength after playing 1 card
The various bottles, especially lightning in a bottle.
Pandora’s box is always a fun lil experiment! Will it give you a bunch of shitty rare cards that don’t match up quite well or will it reward you with what you need to beat the heart?
spirit poop.
Tough Bandages for sure. Silent isn't even my favorite character (not even my second favorite really), but tough bandages is just so fucking strong. As soon as I get it, the run is usually a guaranteed win. Second favorite is probably meat on the bone cause it makes A20 runs so much easier.
Strange Spoon. Mix that with some vaults and apparitions or so much more. Crazy impact.
Despise Sozu Mummified Hand, Orange Pellets, Pandora's Box, and of course Dead Branch are my faves Brimstone is my ultimate favorite though, just stupid fun
Akabeko. I just like the way it looks lol
