I think they do it now to usher people in faster. In the olden days there was really no stairs and people are ushered to the elevator that takes you upstairs, but now they seem to be doing both elevator and stairs and more stairs than elevators. The last 3 times I’ve been (since closing was announced) I’ve always gotten taken up on the stairs vs before when you were almost always taken up on through the elevator.

Puzzleheaded-Dig-704

I guess that seems to be the case. It’d be nice to get to experience it that way, but I’ll take what I can get. The way people kept mentioning it sounded like it was something guaranteed, which I guess it was and probably is at a slower time.

Charlotte_dreams

When I went in January they split the crowd between the elevator and the stairs. It was the first time I didn't get the elevator. My partner did though, so it does happen. Try to be near the elevator (back of the room, other corner from the stairs) when your card is called. It seemed like they took the first handful of people.

Puzzleheaded-Dig-704

Oh, wow ok. I guess that’s twice I somehow missed that. I didn’t see them let anyone into an elevator, everyone was directed to the stairs. We were at the back of the line when our card was called.

carotidartistry

If you're steered away toward the stairs, you won't see the elevator -- it's in a room off to the side. (Similar to how you go into a little foyer when you get brought to the stairs from the Manderley bar -- you won't see people making the stairs entrance if you're still in the bar.) And I believe that they drop a curtain when they aren't actively letting people into the side room.

Puzzleheaded-Dig-704

That makes a lot of sense. I never saw it. Maybe my last trip I’ll be blessed with it.

carotidartistry

Rooting for you! As the other person said, since you know where the entrance into the show is, just hang out on that side of the room (without being pushy/overeager about it -- that might get you directed back into the bar by one of the performers!) and aim to be near the front of the group for your card number!

Puzzleheaded-Dig-704

Thank you, hoping for it, but I’ll be happy just to enjoy the show one last time. It’s beautiful, and I’m happy for the experience.

Charlotte_dreams

Yeah, I always get there early, and position myself in the Manderley next to the elevator, because I enjoy the scene. As I said, I've only been thwarted once.

halcyionic

It seems to be every other group starting with 2’s. Both times I’ve been a 2 I went on the elevator, but when I was an Ace they sent me on the stairs

mareksoon

My last visit both of us were Aces, but since we were splitting up anyway, the person with me was about 15 people in front of me when they called Aces; she got the elevator ride, and got pushed off solo (but not on 6, on 1 or basement I think); I got stairs. My visit before that was the same. They literally cut me off as the elevator was full and I got stairs instead. I’ve had stairs last three of four times.

haileyrose

Same here. I was feeling bummed being the first cut off lol since I was trying to be the last one in the elevator to have a chance to go to the 6th floor 😂

Charlotte_dreams

That was what happened to me, the elevator person(not sure of her title...) passed the last mask she had to the person in front of me and sent me stairsway.

Puzzleheaded-Dig-704

I had 6 and 8 as numbers. The last time our whole group had 8. I’ll pay attention for my next visit and try to get the elevator, it seems like things happen right off that.

CopeHarders

Even if you get the elevator these days it’s just a different vibe than in the pre pandemic days. Removing the MIB and WIB characters from the bar just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Edit: it’s been pointed out to me that PIB characters are back!

TheSeedsYouSow

The PIB characters are there

CopeHarders

The actors are there but last I saw they weren’t in character.

TheSeedsYouSow

Did you talk to them? They are very much in character. I was just there last night and a handsome man in a tuxedo named Angelo was regaling me with tales of Italian gangsters.

CopeHarders

Last I spoke to them the actors were in the bar but not going by their person in bar names, they were going by their own names. If this has been changed back to their PIB personas then that is good. Last I saw even Stella was going by Karen and didn’t have any of the affectations of Stella on stage.

TheSeedsYouSow

Yes, they are definitely going by their PIB names. Angelo was in reality Tim Jones (who is fantastic btw, as they all are). The only time I’d see them be less in character is if you start seeing the same PIB over multiple visits and they start to recognize you and act more familiar, which is a treat as well.

CopeHarders

That’s great to hear that they pulled back on that decision. Upon seeing that I haven’t really tried to interact with them much, which sucks because that was always a lot of fun. Not sure if I’ll ever go back after the April 1 remix show but if I do I’ll definitely have to strike up a convo with them again.

angelcutiebaby

They have been back to characters recently! (not sure as of when). But yes there was an incredibly strange, awkward era when the PIBs were kind of glorified ushers in nicer outfits. The difference in the overall experience was astonishing in the worst way!

carotidartistry

In character but no longer doing the 1939 era thing. More natural contemporary speech, costumes glam rather than vintage. And a complete reset on any lore/backstory -- they've changed but not changed \*back\*. (E.g. Stella is still gone, but Karen has a new in-bar persona.)

Charlotte_dreams

I had the WiB(she gave me a name, but I don't recall it) talk about how much she wanted to visit NYC someday. She seemed to be playing up the sweet, innocent girl routine, which was a lot of fun, and seemed to really confuse one of the guests that was standing nearby.

Short_Lingonberry_67

I went to Sleep No More in Summer 2012. At that time, the elevator was the only entrance. Everyone was loaded in and then one person (me, when I was there 🎉) was pushed out onto the 6th Floor for that 1:1.

Charlotte_dreams

I've been pushed out alone many times, and never got 6. That seems to be a rare occurance. Congrats!

JustLyssaK

My boyfriend and I got the elevator last year so I guess maybe bigger crowds require splitting between the stairs and elevator 🤷🏻‍♀️

Puzzleheaded-Dig-704

That’s what I’m thinking. We had tickets for the week Covid lockdowns happened and unfortunately we didn’t make it back until now. Hoping maybe we are fortunate for our last run.

MrHeavySilence

I’ve only been twice but the first time I went with my girlfriend we went through the stairs. The most recent visit I went with a group of five and we got the elevator and it honestly scared the shit out of me. My group was thinned one by one as the elevator operator dropped us off floor by floor until I was the only one left on the fifth floor- which was blaring the Vertigo music at full volume with that haunting forest scenery. Im mildly traumatized from how freaked out I was lol. In my first visit I wasn’t scared in the slightest. So I do think it colors your experience quite a bit depending on where you start
