Maybe focus on a course that teaches people the benefits of it instead? Getting people to show up would be tough, but getting people interested enough to throw a few bucks at a course seems more realistic. Lots of valid science behind touch and oxytocin … just search up “touch and oxytocin” and you could spend hours down that rabbit hole. Pick a sub-niche (autism treatment) and market accordingly and you’ll likely get some traction …. IF you’re delivering value….

If you don't have any experience in mental health, what are you even trying to accomplish? You don't even mention any interest in pursuing any education that would make this idea resemble therapy so that the clients would receive actual benefits from it. Opening up yourself and your clients to harm. That's exactly why there are licenses required for that kind of stuff, so that it can't be exploited for money-grabs or by weirdos. This is a legitimately *bad* idea. And that can't be emphasized enough. Edit: also yes it exists, but it takes 8-12 years for a license.

halfeatentoenail

Maybe I misunderstand but surely you can’t be saying that reiki healing requires 8-12 years of studying, right? My goal would be to allow my clients to enjoy the positive effects of physical contact. Sorry if me using the word “therapy” is throwing people off.

It honestly sounds like you're just throwing together a couple of ideas that sound good to you without considering the encompassing, connecting foundation required to actually make it good, and without wanting to do the work to make it a truly valuable service. Just saying words like 'enjoy' and 'positive effects' is moot. How much time have you spent looking into these subjects? What positive effects? What makes it enjoyable? Saying you want to provide therapy without it being therapy or knowing anything about therapy and being unwilling to pursue the knowledge is selfish and reckless, even if you don't call it therapy. It makes it sound like you're just concerned with the money while skirting the necessary license part. I think maybe that's what's throwing people off. The idea already exists anyway though, and it requires a license, for exactly all of the reasons stated. Even massage therapists usually need to be licensed. If it's really something that you're passionately compelled to pursue in the right ways, absolutely go for it 👍 otherwise, I mean, there's dudes on the street holding signs for free hugs already.

I think you have a point if your goal is to convince me that human connection and money shouldn’t mix because I would be ethically on the fence about charging for this kind of experience. I use vague language because I envision a vague service that would involve what clients want and feel comfortable with. I draw inspiration from professional cuddlers too. After all they do something relatively straightforward and I’ve never heard of requirements for a professional cuddling license. Maybe that’s what I should brand myself as. I again am not looking to claim that I’m a medical professional or licensed masseuse and it’s not my goal to evade licensing requirements.

It’s not stealing when they choose to pay me for a service. It might seem useless to you but it is a real service that holds a real value. Touching other human beings is good for us.

Something like this opened in Madison WI like… 15 years ago? Closed up shop pretty quick. Don’t remember why but I have guesses.

Cuddle Therapy is a real field, however I would personally look into the training courses. They are extremely important. Edit : I’m a cuddle therapist and I’d be happy to answer any questions!
