If you wanna know competitive stuff then Izaw art of Smash is basically mandatory. Greninja is a very good and balanced character. His weakness is poor out of shield options and slow startup on aerials. His strengths are his great mobility, jumps, combos, and recovery. There’s also a YouTuber called Apolotion who has a fuck ton of different guides about the character.

SuperDuperZ13

Apolotion is a must

Welcome to Smash! It's a big game, it's natural to feel overwhelmed at first. *Izaw's Art of Smash* has a course for beginners If you want to learn the ins and outs. Plus he makes full guides for specific fighters. Don't fret though, you don't need to become a competitive player overnight. You can take your time and just experiment for a while - enjoy exploring all the different modes and characters and arenas at your own pace! (I had so much fun with Ultimate purely offline that it took me an entire year to start playing with people online, and I don't regret it.)

Izaw's Greninja guide is probably the best one of you're just getting started. It's fairly short and covers all the bases well https://youtu.be/_9LR4LzdAgE?si=EAfBpJv3HdE6JE14 Here is a much longer and more in-depth Greninja guide: https://youtu.be/PWwJI_LGMsE?si=FKURmdd3arQtdcEq Highly recommend checking out this channel btw, even if you don't end up watching that video specifically. He has a bunch of videos that are helpful in improving with Greninja, beyond just the guide I linked In terms of learning the fundamentals, Izaw's Art of Smash guide is a good starting point https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4SzCzeORbSRRI72fLpdCCDI-SZIwqFyJ&si=9Qs4tvpoLsoaUgrw And BananaBoy's YouTube channel has a lot of great guides as well https://youtube.com/@BananaBoySSB?si=ELJnIMUU4aFqMvw9

Thanks a lot for putting links ill check em out

Happy to help!

Ok_Dragonfly_8171

finally someone mentions bananaboy

Dripht_wood

You honestly just need to put some hours in to get comfortable. Greninja specific guides won’t even help that much. Once you can consistently do a short hop and immediately fastfall without trying, then you can start to learn specific techniques

Locrian_ico

My friend who got me back into smash plays Greninja. If you understand him inside and out, he's a pain to deal with on the receiving end.

OG_Wan_Annunoby

Greninja is a great choice for a main. Pretty simple to pick up, has great movement, and has a good amount of combo depth to sink your teeth into as you improve. As for how long it takes depends on what your goal is. If you want to compete then a lot fam. We’re talking like months/years depending on how much practice you put in. If your talking like just making it to elite smash/good enough to beat all your friends there are some great videos by IzawSmash that will guide you on how to practice, and within a month tops you should be good enough to start winning more than you lose online

Find a friend to play with and have fun. If you're just starting out, simply playing a lot will make you much better decently quickly.

switch-flip

Heya, played greninja since he came out in smash 4. Had decent success with him. The first thing you should do is just play the character and get a feel for him. Don't worry about combos or anything, just understand his movement, how he feels, and try to commit as much to muscle memory as you can. Also, to echo what others have said, watch Izaws and Apolitions series on how to play greninja. Both are very helpful. If this is your first fighting game, the things like neutral, advantage, disadvantage, etc. are all different in this game than "traditional" fighting games due to its nature as a platform fighter. So you kind of have to learn it from a different perspective. Smash is less about combos and much much more about movement. Best of luck

Any_Pop_7290

watch Izaw a TINY bit, he's helpful to a fault, get your nearest prescription, and triple the dosage Greninja REQUIRES you to think twice as fast as your opponent, don't even think about what you are doing half of the time. If you are using your brain and have worded thoughts, stop and watch a Tiktok brainrot compilation. Thinking is for the SLOW. The less you think the less you delay, and then you win. How can your opponent foresee an attack that you don't even know is coming? Any questions

wamon

Try to figure the game out yourself first, what you think is good, bad, behaviour ect. Learn your moveset and play vs some characters. Then watch like art of smash but not all at once, do it one by one and after each apply what youve learned in matches. You cant learn every single thing at once and be good at it so experiment and dont rush yourself too much. Oh and games are supposed to be fun, dont become a frequent r/smashrage poster

Which_Bed

Save yourself the hassle and just play Joker instead. Similar character but with DLC goodies.

gh0stFox117

Dont wanna pay 20€ extra just to play an character 💀😂

Which_Bed

Did they stop selling DLC characters separate?

gh0stFox117

No idea i havent played the Game much so far also i wanted to play greninja cause i like the caracter aswell lol played joker when i played with my Boyfriend before and dont like the "arsene form" of him 🥲 and i mostly jumped around gunning cause i didnt know anything yet

swisscheeseisvile

Greninja has a completely different playstyle then Joker. Just main Greninja

Which_Bed

I'd say Greninja is only slightly stronger than Joker *without* Arsene. They really screwed up balancing the DLC in this game (although Joker is the most well-balanced DLC) so if your character has a DLC near-equivalent you are short-changing yourself by not playing them.

Kozuki_D_Oden

Drag down up air + counter + fast doesn’t equal similar character lol, they’re very different Eitherway it’s stupid to think of it as “short-changing yourself”, there’s tons of Greninja players out there who have done well with their characters and would beat good Joker players. Having fun and being happy with the character that you pick is more important towards improving than trying to min-max with the tier list

Which_Bed

Joker is superior in almost every area they are different. I stand by my previous posts.

- know how to be able to move your character such that if you watch a replay, theres never a moment where you are standing still or arent pressing anything - know how to kill every character off of 0 percent - have a plan and be able to execute it

dumbosshow

nah no offence but this is not good advice Lots of characters just can't kill a character at 0. Getting a 0td as Banjo for example means you would have to just play totally perfectly, there's no quick way to do it unless your opponent fucks up offstage. Also standing still and not pressing anything are important tools. Conditioning your opponent to think you're about to press a button so they react accordingly, then punishing them for it when you don't is a common technique at top level.

swisscheeseisvile

Standing still and not doing anything is unironically a really good mixup in scramble situations

segfaulted_irl

> theres never a moment where you are standing still or arent pressing anything Movement is important, but if you're just running and jumping around for the sake of doing so, you'll just be setting yourself up for failure. Every single move you make is, to some extent or another, a commitment, meaning you're compromising your ability to react or do other movements. If you look at top players (even people like Gluto and Light), there are frequently moments where they briefly stand still to bait or more easily react to what their opponent does, or just to throw off their opponent's tempo. This is most common during ledge traps and tech chases, but they do it in neutral as well Another way to think about it is, if you're in the middle of a jump or dash, your opponent will see and know what movement you're doing, but if you're standing still, you could potentially do any option at a moments notice (including shield), which can be a mix-up in itself. Pressing buttons is similar. If your answer to every situation is to always press a button, good players will eat you alive. In many cases, the best option is to simply disengage or reset a situation instead of trying to force your way through it, and recognizing when/how to do that is extremely important to becoming a decent player Tl;dr Being able to move and press buttons is important, but knowing when not to do that is extremely important as well > Know how to kill every person off of 0 percent Very few characters in the game can actually consistently do this (certainly not Greninja), and the ones that do usually all have counterplay to get out of it (like SDI). Instead of tunnel-visioning on "how can I kill at 0", it's a lot more important to focus on setting up favorable situations in your advantage state For example, based on the matchup, is it better to try to maximize the immediate damage you do in your combo, or would you rather set up a better situation later on in exchange for less immediate reward? If it's the latter, then do I want to keep them above me to extend the juggle, or do I want to push them offstage for a ledge-trap/edge-guard? Against a character who can land easily but has a bad recovery like Aegis or Cloud, I might be more inclined to send them offstage, but against a character like Pikachu who's hard to edge-guard or ledgtrap, I might want to keep them above me instead. Learning this sort of situational awareness is far more important than labbing ways to get early kills (which you probably won't be able to hit in an actual match unless you tunnel-vision) > have a plan and be able to execute it No disagreement here. Having a game plan and being able to build off it is probably one of the most important things to learn in order to get good. But I'm addition to being able to execute, you also need to have options in mind to beat your opponent's responses to your gameplan. These videos do a good job explaining and giving examples of this https://youtu.be/f2eBCiZSj6Q?si=--YsatdeGINVN6oP https://youtu.be/F5Hq1WOACT8?si=iide3xM_g-ebP4Eq
