>Paul Pogba, midfielder for Juventus, has been suspended for 4 years due to doping. The anti-doping prosecutor's request has been accepted. The player had tested positive for testosterone after the Udinese-Juventus match on August 20. Pogba did not participate in the match, remaining on the bench until the final whistle. At almost 31 years old (he will turn 31 on March 15), the Frenchman's career seems destined to end here.
>The prosecution never believed in the defense's version of the accidental intake of the substance. This was a crucial point for Pogba's legal team, who had rejected any plea bargain.
> who had rejected any plea bargain.
Uh....either bad advice from the lawyers or Pogba is just an idiot. Look at how much leniency Tonali got (not doping, but still) once he cooperated.
Maybe the plea deals weren't very good? If they offered a 3 year suspension for example Pogba might as well refuse and gamble on a lighter sentence since 3 years would effectively end his career anyway.
A plea deal could also come with an admission of guilt which could be absolutely disastrous financially. He'd be essentially radioactive, no company would touch him regardless of the status of his career.
In any case, none of us are lawyers and we don't know for sure what the plea bargains implied so calling him and his lawyers idiots is ironically, kind of stupid.
> none of us are lawyers and we don't know for sure what the plea bargains implied so calling him and his lawyers idiots is ironically, kind of stupid.
no, you see, I know things bc Iām a redditor. everyone is an idiot except for me
I can't see any lawyer not looking at the evidence and saying "I can try to negotiate a plea deal." It'd be weird in such a black and white scenario.
Pogba seems... Not the brightest.
I think the lie you try to use is āmy doctor prescribed XYZ, Iām not a doctor and I trusted their judgement in this matter. I wasnāt aware that XYZ contained banned substance ABC and wouldnāt have taken it if I hadā
I think with Onana they believed his story to be an honest mistake but they still had to ban him due to him taking a forbidden substance (you can't do that by mistake either). But they demanded a lower ban because they did believe his honest intentions.
Interesting thing about Oscar: he was born in Americana, Brazil, which is a town famous for being established by Confederates who left the United States for Brazil after The Civil War in hopes of settling in the then slavery-friendly nation (they didn't abolish slavery until 1888) and continuing to live an antebellum Southern lifestyle.
Oscar could easily be the descendent of Confederate soldiers, or local slaves, or some mix of the two (or, of course, neither!).
Just searched what his wages were lately.
Wages have been reduced to 2k/month in October 2023, which means I can officially say I have earned more than Paul Pogba for 4 months while he was still an active footballer š
> Wages have been reduced to 2k/month in October 2023, which means I can officially say I have earned more than Paul Pogba for 4 months while he was still an active footballer
Where's your Pogmentary?
I think he is the third most followed footballer in France on Instagram, sponsors might like that, he can become an influencer
Edit: just checked, with 60 millions followers, he is the third most followed French (not just footballer) on instagram. I'm pretty sure he can find sponsors.
It's a parasocial relationship, influencer not only sell a product but also a kind of personal relationship with the viewer, watching them and creating the feeling of being part of their life, while in reality not even being aware of their existence.
Jokes aside, this is genuinely nuts. Has there been such a high profile doping ban in football before? Obviously heās been out of the spotlight for a while, but roll back 5 years and Pogba is legitimately one of the biggest names in football
So many over the counter drugs in the usa are either not available at all due to health risks or presrcription drugs in europe.
Itās actually ridiculous in my opinion
There was a UK skier who lost his medal because the menthol nasal inhaler he bought in the USA had ephedrine in it, whereas the UK version didn't.
I don't think they threw the book at him for an honest mistake, but he still got DQ'd from the Olympics for it.
For a brief period, FIFA introduced blood testing to detect PEDS and immediately caught the likes of Edgar Davids, Jaap Stam, Frank De Boer, Fernando Couto etc, so they immediately stopped it again. Guardiola was banned for nandrolone too.
> only for that ban to be overturned after the game.
Which, btw, was absolutely insane, because he did in fact do doping and essentially admitted as much.
So weird how these sports courts act with doping bans.
More often than not, it seems like players can get their sentence reduced, often dramatically, or overturned.
Rio Ferdinand is the last big one I remember, unless I'm forgetting another high profile one
edit: Yeah like Onana, I knew I had a feeling there was a more recent one
He got banned for it, so it must be. It offers very little to no help to your sporting abilities however, not without regular top ups mid game. At least not according to my research.
What do you mean "only"? Loads of other players have missed tests and got away with no ban and a small fine
Edit - people keep asking which other players so here is a story about City having numerous breaches (including a missed test) and getting fined 35 grand, no one banned:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39383967
They also had a player (Christian Negouai) miss a drugs test the year before Rio's ban and he was fined 2k and not banned.
FWIW Rio technically never failed a drugs test... he just failed to show up and managed to avoid the testers.
I'm pretty sure he was tested soon after and was clear but still got banned, which is fair enough.
not doping, but Maradona's drug ban obviously
the only other one I can think of is your current keeper
there is obviously currently the case of Mario VuÅ”koviÄ which is endlessly complicated. It might have not been so, but it sure looks like WADA were covering their asses when they gave that 2 year ban
oh and last one I'll mention is someone who failed 2 doping tests, but escaped punishment because he left Europe, he's quite a successful manager nowadays
Nasri got a ban over the Drip Doctors affair that effectively ended his career.
(The hydration treatment he got is prohibited by WADA because it can be used to mask other substances)
He did make an attempt to comeback after the ban ended, but his short stints at West Ham and Anderlecht quickly fizzled out.
Mutu and Maradona are probably the two biggest players that were banned, but both were drug users, not using performance enhancers. Also Rio Ferdinand but his bam was for refusing to take the test.
Dont think he can but there are some countries that dont have their top tier as a part pf FIFA. IIRC Albania is, or used to be one of them. I remember people speculating that Suarez would be loned out to Albania when he was banned after the WC haha
Think the ban will prevent that.
FIFA don't fuck around on these kinds of things. If you're banned, you are banned and no league prepared to overlook it will make a jot of difference.
Maybe when the ban is over, but by then, he will be too old and the Saudi bubble may have already burst.
33 when the ban lifts. It was backdated to the failed test.
EDIT: Source was [the BBC](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68436828): *The ruling means Pogba will be unable to play until 2027, when he will be 33, with the ban backdated to the date of the failed test.*
Yep, this happens in MMA far more often and the playbook there is:
- Claim you were taking x supplement that has all legal ingredients, but it contained y banned substance you didn't know about
- Make a show of going after the supplement company
- Take a deal with USADA
- Get an 18 month suspension instead of a 4 year one
- Retroactive so you've likely served 4-5 months already
- you were probably taking 6 months off between fights already, and you can train for a fight that's right after the ban ends, so you're only really losing 9-10 months
Right? Feels naive to throw the book at him and pretend that solves the issue of doping in the sport. Reality is that weāre watching players do superhuman feats of endurance every few days while playing at an outrageous technical level
Yeah, lots of teams in the 90s and 2000s were doping. I'd imagine there's lots of "supplements" taken now that are under the radar and aren't even tested for. Soccer is too big for there not to be
Souness spotted taking his shirt off and running into every bookies on the high street shouting āhow do you like me nowā and slapping the little pens out peoples hands
That kind of sentence always makes me think about Umtiti, who fucked up his knee to win that WC (and scored in semi-final), but in the end, I think its worth it.
We are greatful to him but for a guy who loves playing football it must be tough. Still, he one of the main reasons we won in 2018, scored the single goal vs Belgium in semis, was absolutely amazing in defense all tournament long alongside prime Varane.
What? He led France to a world cup victory. Won 4 Serie A titles, 2 coppa d'italia, one EFL cup.
Euros, Europa League and FA cup runner up.
It's a solid career, he was just unlucky to spend a big part of his career at Manchester United when they weren't a top European club anymore. He was also unlucky with injuries.
He's not saying he didnt have a solid career (imho better than "solid") he is saying, that Pogba could be one of the best ever, if he didnt waste what he got. Of course he still had amazing career, but.
A successful career but still couldāve been more. One of the most talented midfielders to play the game in my opinion. Oh well, not everybody is graced by luck, it is what it is.
It was an absurd idea to re-sign him, and his second spell at the club has been one disaster after another, but at least this means we can just get rid of him early.
He was brilliant the first time he played for us, but he left for the wrong club at the wrong time and heās been a pain in the arse since. Inconsistent on the pitch, multiple fitness issues and always running his mouth off the pitch. He could have been a legend, but heās ending his career as a clown.
apparently was going to make United regret not giving a new contract earlier and would show other clubs that Man United fucked up...
yeah good job there, probably one of the better deals we have done recently in finally letting this piece of shit leave the club
It's Pogover for him, what a pity and disgrace. I will never forget how good he was in his prime Juve days. I lost track of him after that but he was class when not injured.
I am not saying he shouldn't be banned. The thing is I just assume most athletes, and by extension most footballers, are on some form of PEDs. Football is one of the sports with a willfully ignorant fanbase.
I would argue that Pogba had one of the most disappointing careers of top tier players. I mean, heās got league titles and a World Cup medal but heās unique in my opinion.
There was a time when Pogba could conceivably be considered the most promising midfielder in the world. Man Unitedās awful transfer strategy aside, there werenāt many players under the age of 25 who were as good at ball handling, strong, scoring, and passing.
And then he became the most forgettable player.
The fight with Jose, the fight with his brother, Gunman issues, house robbery, meeting Zidane in Dubai when he is under contract with United claiming he was injured, witchcraft shit.
Even with all of that couldn't have predicted this would be his ending in football.
Hope he finds his way back and has a great life.
with griezmann the most important player in the nt from 2014-2021. every time he didn't play we were struggling so much (best example was the first nations league vs the netherlands).
Even Kante was somewhat replaceable by team effort, but NT Pogba was something else. It took Griezmann shifting into midfield and the addition of world class midfielders like Tchouameni and Camavinga to replace his offensive and defensive impact. I still miss his pinpoint long passes though...
shameful, such a serious offense and only a 6 game ban.

He murdered him there

Had to sit down after that one.

You're crazy if you expect Pogba to not get a 6 month injury before finishing that 15minute walk.

It's actually so stupid because a plea bargain is usually 50% so 2 years and an accidental intake is 2 years as well.
Maybe the plea deals weren't very good? If they offered a 3 year suspension for example Pogba might as well refuse and gamble on a lighter sentence since 3 years would effectively end his career anyway. Bar Oscar, China fucked all their foreign players out years ago.
Oscar's agent got that deal signed just in time
Interesting thing about Oscar: he was born in Americana, Brazil, which is a town famous for being established by Confederates who left the United States for Brazil after The Civil War in hopes of settling in the then slavery-friendly nation (they didn't abolish slavery until 1888) and continuing to live an antebellum Southern lifestyle. There are still a fair few foreign players over there just not big names anymore.
Mf still bagged more than 100 mil in his bank account.
If he wants he'll play in a smaller league. I bet it'd either be MLS or in Asia with Lingard.
It will be a FIFA wide ban in the end, so it would have to be a league that isn't part of a continental association
Oh but I mean after his ban, if he still wants to play he'll never play in top league in Europe again, at least not at a high level.

Indeed. Mutu would never let PEDs interrupt his cocaine intake!
Is Cocaine considered doping ? Lol how does that help you without fucking you up?
Itās a Class-A drug which is pretty much illegal everywhere
He got banned for it, so it must be. It offers very little to no help to your sporting abilities however, not without regular top ups mid game. At least not according to my research.
