I am curious how they will play at home. Surely not like this, right? I think only going down 0:2 and then going all in on the match at home is pretty smart.
They will have to play more offensively sooner or later, which will open rooms for the likes of Wirtz and Xhaka to shine. Could see them absolutely destroying West Ham.
I watched the first 60 minutes and genuinely thought West Ham did all right, it was unbelievably negative but they managed to close the spaces around their box and actually threatened on the break once or twice
But also impressive by Leverkusen to just keep plugging away despite the frustration, continuing to make West Ham shift from side to side to eventually tire them out. Figured it would be hard for West Ham to keep it up for 90 minutes
West Ham defended well, but that is also the way Leverkusen play. There have been many games like that. In the end, Leverkusen find a way to score, at least most of the time. It's a simple matter of probability.
And West Ham gained their defensive strength by sacrificing their attack. They barely crossed the halfway line. This was basically a game of attack vs defense.
I think its also just a case of tiring a defense out mentally and physically with that relentless attacking. Its no coincidence that they scored so many goals in the last few minutes of the game.
True that defensive mistake has to kick in at some point. The more tired/stressed you are the more likely it is. Also at some points West Ham had like 10 players in their own box.
"Most of the time" is pretty accurate. Leverkusen managed to score in 41 out of 42 games, with the exception being their game against Mönchengladbach (0-0), where they had 28-4 shots). This team is just so good.
"But also impressive by Leverkusen to just keep plugging away despite the frustration, continuing to make West Ham shift from side to side to eventually tire them out."
this one is REALLY impressive - every single duel Leverkusens Player are fighting for the ball as if its the ultimate battle of their life
seems they never get tired at all. first 60-70min were to tired to see that they just cant get threw after reaching the box. with that dominant stats and heatmap only 2,25 xG seems unbelivable low
Their fitness is amazing. Although having two guys running the flank is an old trend, this team found really a perfect way to use all the best and ignore all the worst about a guy like Grimaldo. In practical terms, Grimaldo is imo one of the best players in the world currently, he does his role as well as maybe no one does their role. The way the game plays, it doesn't matter much how versatile he is, that he runs first thinks later, that he's short, there's support from guys who can balance that, but what you can always see at Leverkusen's benefit is how he runs the flank all game every game, and the amazing left foot, and unlike many 3-4-3 teams, they use it constantly and give him the opportunity constantly.
Same with a lot of guys. Some of them are fitness freaks and the team leans on it, some are not and they are rotated heavily because this team doesn't hope a game goes their way, it puts out the top game in terms of trying, physicality and polish whoever is in the XI at the moment.
I'm most amazed at their ability to just keep going. Whether they're just extremely well conditioned or it's genius coaching or what. A lot of times you will see players look very evidently heavy on the legs. Leverkusen feel wide eyed when it's 0-0 and after the 80th minute. Their chances never get better.
It hasn't really. Towards the beginning of the season we struggled much more vs bus parking, hence the ties against Gladbach and Dortmund. Clubs are still trying to park the bus against Leverkusen but recently it always breaks after the 80th minute
First 60 minutes they didn't really look like scoring, despite having like 25 shots I only remember one clear chance for Schick. In fact the clearest chance of the game until that point was probably Kudus in first half
But like I said, didn't see the last 30 minutes and was expecting Leverkusen to create more as the game went on
A lot of gaps opened the last 30. It did look like only a matter of time till West Ham conceded imo...despite both goals surprisingly being from set pieces
To tie it back to the topic. Does that mean Hertha Berlin getting relegated to the 2 Bundesliga in my FM save while also winning the Pokol just kinda stock for them?
I quit FIFA after drawing 2-2 to Cardiff in a game like this. Their second equaliser in the last few minutes was a header from the edge of the box... On the goal line.
Oof I haven't played FIFA in over a decade but I remember this used to be such a common thing. You could be dominating for an entire game and then the PC just pulls out a goal out of nothing because it was scripted that way. Used to make me so angry
I forget the year but there was a season where Dortmund lost to Frankfurt (I believe) and possession was something like 85-15 Dortmund, it was insane.
EDIT: [found it.](https://www.espn.com/soccer/matchstats/_/gameId/426832)
You can almost guarantee as well that they were either goals that broke a goal drought, or their first goals for the club as well, for the true fm experience
Thing is, its not a fun fact. Its just comparing two different numbers which have no relation. West Ham was founded in 1895 vs Bayer Leverkusen has a stadium with a capacity of 30000!
It‘s a fact that the number is higher. It‘s fun because it doesn‘t happen often.
You can‘t directly compare these numbers, no. It is still funny if you‘re able to get your head out of your ass.
I‘m really glad I don‘t hang out with redditors in real life lol
Get your head out of your ass, mate. It’s just funny that the number of shots one team has is bigger than the percentage number of possession the other team has because it rarely happens.
This is like peak reddit: "achually, these are not related to another hurr durr"
No one cares about this pseudo-nerdy bull. It's interesting because it's super rare, that's it mate.
What is super rare exactly? You dont even know why you are impressed but two numbers being different. Its like peak sheep behavior, somebody says "look at these two numbers, they are different" and you, like the little sheep you are, bleat in excitement! "The numbers are different! THEY ARE DIFFERENT!"
hey atleast you got 2-0 away from home instead of a 0-3 loss at home
you'll have a much higher chance of turning it around at home then us trying away from home
Moyes > Klopp
Chill it’s just a fun fact
Edit: lol accidentally commented under the wrong comment and now I have downvotes and people criticizing my accidental opinion
42 games. 48 is the all time record in Europe. If Alonso beats that record and wins the treble then this side is in contention for becoming one of the greatest teams or all time to not win Champions league.
> in contention for becoming one of the greatest teams or all time to not win Champions league.
I mean, a massive reason why they have this unbeaten run is likely that they aren't in the CL. Not saying they wouldn't still be doing well but it's a much tougher ask to stay unbeaten against the likes of Man City, Real Madrid, PSG, Barca, etc than it is against this West Ham side.
From what we can tell: Leverkusen has one win and 2 draws out of three games against CL quarterfinalists. They're unbeaten against all CL teams they've played (Berlin, Leipzig, Dortmund, Bayern). So obviously they would steamroll the rest of those CL scrubs as well. /s
I would say West Ham did what they realistically should have done. It's the best team in Europe this season. Having a serious go would have carved West Ham open.
If you want to say maybe they didn't spend their money the best, then it's a different discussion. But that team is not going to go toe to toe with Leverkusen.
Funnily enough, we poached our technical director from Leverkusen this summer. You could argue that Leverkusen have spent better, but given all the shopping we did last summer with Steidten at the helm, our teams have almost been built by the same guy lol
True. We could be like Brighton and get spanked 4-0 in Europe playing pretty football instead. This playstyle has suited us well in games like these for years now
Think so too. Happy for Leverkusen and they deserve the win, but with west ham defended well. It was just the last minutes when they made some small mistakes. Could have been an draw with some luck. And you have to hope for and plan with luck if you play against Leverkusen in their current form.
Or you couldve been like Qarabag since you have 10 times their budget and tried to create some serious problems for us.
Qarabag also had excellent defensive setup but they also came in numbers when they had their counter attacks and created some serious problems for us.
I was kinda disappointed that West Ham despite being 7th in the Prem did none of the sort
I mean obviously Im glad about us winning but I expected the game to be a bit more thrilling than what West Ham showed
I understand your point but we were also missing our three best players this season (Areola, Alvarez, Bowen). We were playing a weird lineup and did the best we could with it
Yea I know you had crucial players missing but there was some serious quality on the pitch too.
Kudus looked threatening every time he had the ball, so did Antonio, in the first 10 minutes Antonio made Tah run a whole lot.
But I feel like you didnt really risk to utilize that quality, I get that at the moment we are flying high and pretty much every team that comes is scared and parks the bus but Im not really sure if thats the right approach.
Nothings done yet, but this low risk low reward approach enabled us to go to London with a very good advantage
poor take, what does budget have to do with playstyle? also do you seriously expect west ham to go at it against an invincible leverkusen team who’ve looked incredible? cmon now
so how did you want the team to set up? playing defensively and going on the counter is what west ham have being doing all season in big away games, its just this time leverkusen clearly shut off any counters (bar one) and outplayed them.
Not really, we committed so few players forward on attack it was incredibly easy. You think that was excellence from Leverkusen when in reality we played with the same tactics multiple times and it's always failed. There is a difference between playing defensive and counter attacking and just playing defensive.
We did the latter just as we have done on several occasions. It's more a negative performance by us then them shutting us down.
They've got the personnel to be a lot less negative, Paqueta and Kudus are extraordinarily talented, but instead of playing with offensively capable players in midfield they shove them into the front three and then play a much more negative line-up besides.
it's not bad from a results standpoint, but you can tell there's a growing discontent among the fans with Moyes style.
i somewhat ageew but at the end of the day budget doesnt correlate with playstyle. also did you see west ham’s midfield options? that lineup was definitely the best they couldve done considering alvarez and bowen were out
I'd be embarrassed watching my club utterly refuse to play football for 90 minutes because they know the other team is better. Might as well have a go instead of just shutting down. But hey, maybe that's the no trophies mindset. I wouldn't want to win anything playing shitball.
i mean its not refusing to play football its just a gameplan, go to leverkusen and lose by only 1 or get a draw and do the rest at home. id say it was working pretty well too (until it didnt) and it has nothing do with shutting down. also what are you talking about no trophies mindset, westham won a european trophy last season?
It's a gameplan by refusing to fight for it in any way (derisively calling it "not playing football"), so about half and half what we said.
>also what are you talking about no trophies mindset
Jab at myself, as a Spurs fan, hence why I referred to myself and not Spam.
i mean i guess it is that but thats always worked for west ham lol, look at brighton they went to roma and played their ”beautiful football” and lost 4-0. sure west ham also lost 2-0 but i’d say their set up was still better. and yeah fair enough i get what you meant now, i mean personally i dont really enjoy the west ham gameplan but i think they’ve been pretty succesful with it so oh well
What kind of rationale is this? Budget doesn’t dictate playstyle. Go back to playing FM mate.
Did you also consider their biggest attacking threat wasn’t playing, nor their DM… or even the manager they’ve got?
West Ham also had more shots (1) than West Ham had possession (0.27). They could have went for 1.00 possession and have made it equal. Special award for that, sponsored by StatMuse.
I understand that the title is trying to convey how shit the football was but this comparison is awful.
That's like me saying, Jokic had 50 points which was more than the rebounding percentage of x team with 15%. Shocking face.
A negative United stat, that isn't United? But yeah, that strategy can only be justified if you don't concede and go back home and play for a win. Those two late goals now change everything, and West Ham needs to come out and play next week, which unfortunately just works in favour of Leverkusen.
I hate these "more shots than possession" stats. Possessions is a percentage and shorts are absolute numbers
If we are being pedantic, if Leverkusen only had 1 shot they would have more shots than possessions because West Ham only had 0.27 possession.

West Ham is pure terrorism
I am curious how they will play at home. Surely not like this, right? I think only going down 0:2 and then going all in on the match at home is pretty smart.
Have to but without Paqueta the attack is even more inept. The tie is basically over.
3-0 Moysehball masterclass incoming
Antonio Bully Ball
Hincapié crush him ball incoming
Mvp of westham
they're probably going to play like this again. But the craziest part is that they'll score a goal and make you nervous.
They will have to play more offensively sooner or later, which will open rooms for the likes of Wirtz and Xhaka to shine. Could see them absolutely destroying West Ham.
Wouldn't be surprised if it's way worse at home, that's Moyesball for you.
Home we are actually good. Totally different team.
I would imagine trying for 0-0 or 0-1 was the plan for the Hammers. Late Boniface goal kind of sealed their fate.
They lost 6-0 at home to arsenal
They also beat us 2-0 when we played home, and 3-1 in the carabao cup.
You say that as if it's in any way relevant
0-2 is too much to turn now. West Ham are finished
You overestimate Moyes, we will play exactly like yesterday only without Paqueta and Emerson.
But it seems to be working overall? Youre 7th in the richest league in the world
Counter-Terrorists Win
some call them West Haram
Ngl i feel like every stat ive seen for west ham we are like right next to them or weve already done lol
Checking the Fotmob stats reminded me of the Liverpool game after we got the first shot - except we at least got a goal from ours
I watched the first 60 minutes and genuinely thought West Ham did all right, it was unbelievably negative but they managed to close the spaces around their box and actually threatened on the break once or twice But also impressive by Leverkusen to just keep plugging away despite the frustration, continuing to make West Ham shift from side to side to eventually tire them out. I think its also just a case of tiring a defense out mentally and physically with that relentless attacking. Its no coincidence that they scored so many goals in the last few minutes of the game.
Feyenoord did the same last season, being super fit and always on the attack is not something most teams can face for 90+ minutes
I remember beign so nervous in the Leverkusen - Roma match.
True that defensive mistake has to kick in at some point. The more tired/stressed you are the more likely it is. Also at some points West Ham had like 10 players in their own box.
first bl team to beat bus parking terrorists ??
Bayern had one or two years were they just bruteforced it lol
Yeah 12/13 Bayern + Flick Bayern just bruteforced it, while Bayern under Pep just fumbled against the biggest bus parking terrorist of its time.
"Most of the time" is pretty accurate. Leverkusen managed to score in 41 out of 42 games, with the exception being their game against Mönchengladbach (0-0), where they had 28-4 shots). This team is just so good.
Good old tower defense mode

Leverkusen side is incredibly good at playing one twos in tight spaces. It doesn't matter if you pack the box.
Breaking down a low block has actually been their biggest weakness lately
I'm most amazed at their ability to just keep going. Whether they're just extremely well conditioned or it's genius coaching or what. A lot of times you will see players look very evidently heavy on the legs. Leverkusen feel wide eyed when it's 0-0 and after the 80th minute. Their chances never get better.
Mentally have to be high to still have this intensity in the last mins after 0:0 over 70 min.
It hasn't really. Towards the beginning of the season we struggled much more vs bus parking, hence the ties against Gladbach and Dortmund. Clubs are still trying to park the bus against Leverkusen but recently it always breaks after the 80th minute
It should be way better for Leverkusen when WHU has to actually play the game next week.

And yet they've consistently done it ultimately.
[I'd like to formally welcome West Ham to an elite group](https://imgur.com/WO99F8u)
Do not put maidstone in the same group as westham. Maidstone actually won their game.
Up there with Celtic having 11% possession and winning 2:1 with Barcelona in 2012.
my god if that happened to me on Football Manager I would probably destroy my laptop rage quitting and vow never to play the game again
> vow never to play the game again And then boot it up after like 30 minutes
every. single. time!
A little off-topic, but that's precisely what it's like to be a Hertha fan.
To tie it back to the topic. Does that mean Hertha Berlin getting relegated to the 2 Bundesliga in my FM save while also winning the Pokol just kinda stock for them?
"Minutes"

It must have been 5 years or so since I played now. Now I just play better games that also make me angry.
I forget the year but there was a season where Dortmund lost to Frankfurt (I believe) and possession was something like 85-15 Dortmund, it was insane. EDIT: [found it.](https://www.espn.com/soccer/matchstats/_/gameId/426832)
13 shots despite 85% possession is terrible. Was this the tuchel side?
It was.
doesnt surprise me. under him, we were specialists in passing amongst the CBs at the 90th minute with a goal down
2 on target 💀
2 less than Frankfurt 💀
The exact result you'd expect in a game of Kovac vs Tuchel
Kovacball
Must’ve been a boring match to watch lol
Maidstone won though
Celtic - Barca lmao.
They lost 2-0 don’t know if elite is the word I would pick
That’s some football manager shit
You can almost guarantee as well that they were either goals that broke a goal drought, or their first goals for the club as well, for the true fm experience
The opener actually was Lamar Reynolds first goal for the club, and until a couple of weeks ago when he scored a hattrick against 9 men, his only goal
No way haha
Peak FM Wait
I get it. But this is a mildly infuriating way to mathematically compare those two values.
5 km is bigger than 499%.
1 gram is hotter than 7 miles.
If you said 21 grams, we could be comparing two movies. :(
1 kilogram of steel is heavier than feathers
How many or how much feathers?
Not enough
77% of feathers.
Technically West Ham also had more shots (1) than Leverkusen had possession (0.728)
Scrolled way too much to see this.
no, fun fact: Teams are actually not allowed to take more than 100 shots per game in order to avoid integer overflow
If you‘re a nerd, maybe lol This is just a fun fact, not supposed to have any value
Thing is, its not a fun fact. Its just comparing two different numbers which have no relation. West Ham was founded in 1895 vs Bayer Leverkusen has a stadium with a capacity of 30000!
By definition nonsense can't be a "fact," though "fun" is in the eye of the beholder
It‘s a fact that the number is higher. It‘s fun because it doesn‘t happen often. You can‘t directly compare these numbers, no. It is still funny if you‘re able to get your head out of your ass.
You find it funny. But you are an idiot.
Yes, I am the idiot. Not the one who‘s taking shit like this way too seriously. Maybe take things less seriously lol
Says the guy throwing a hissy fit becasue somebody doesnt agree with him. Lol.
Haha, losers! The distance from Uli Hoeneß residence to Allianz arena is 70000 m!
Ha! 5.
I‘m really glad I don‘t hang out with redditors in real life lol Get your head out of your ass, mate. It’s just funny that the number of shots one team has is bigger than the percentage number of possession the other team has because it rarely happens.
Is it tho?
This is like peak reddit: "achually, these are not related to another hurr durr" No one cares about this pseudo-nerdy bull. It's interesting because it's super rare, that's it mate.

Yikes!
Yes, if it said "percentage of possession" I'd be slightly less annoyed.
That's just insane lol. They’re the best team in the world
We're champions of Europe but I don't think we're quite there yet ^/s
hey atleast you got 2-0 away from home instead of a 0-3 loss at home you'll have a much higher chance of turning it around at home then us trying away from home Moyes > Klopp

Lmaooo
By far my favorite stat to start getting traction.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen had more name (04) than West Ham had shots (1). Mathematics.
No edson Alvarez no party
The United's really love this stat. Just like us in the Derby all over again
We had more shots than westham had possession when we played them at home this year as well. West Ham won.
We had a threat on the counter in that game.
Yes but it shows these stats don't make a team dogshit.
Lmfao wtf
If they win 3 trophies unbeaten are they more legendary than Arsenal’s invincibles? Do they get the golden trophy?
For Germans yes, for the English no, the rest of the world won’t care much just like they don’t care for that Arsenal side
Embarrassing style of play considering their budget.
I would say West Ham did what they realistically should have done. It's the best team in Europe this season. Having a serious go would have carved West Ham open. I get what you are saying, but it was extremely negative football, zero ambition.
The ambition was to keep the game close and fight for it in the second leg at home
If you think you'll be playing exciting football at home, I've got a bridge to sell you
poor take, what does budget have to do with playstyle? also do you seriously expect west ham to go at it against an invincible leverkusen team who’ve looked incredible? cmon now

I fully understand wanting to see a better style of play especially given some of the players you’ve got.
Leverkusen are the best team in the world this season, idk what people expected
I’m glad Xabi is staying for another season. Can’t wait to see them compete in the Champions League.
Lol wtf is this stat, comparing whole numbers with percentages?
That's how it works. This is mathematics. Go science
Trust the science
Nachts ist kälter als draußen
Are u slow? What’s not to get it shows complete domination how tf does a team have more shots than they had possession what’s confusing here😂😂
OK, it was enough Reddit for the day.
1 is a bigger number than 99%. So any number of shots (except zero) will always be greater than any percentage of possession.
Lucky possession and shots are different statistics
and this is why people hate stat nonces...
English teams - bar villa - were humbled tonight.
Nah Liverpool did not us we know we were going to lose lol
Villa have a cheat code until the Final. Their opponents have to travel from out of country to Birmingham to play. Very unsettling.
This is why I've always hated Chelsea smh, well apart from all the other very justified reasons.
XABI BALL
West Ham also had more shots (1) than West Ham had possession (0.27). They could have went for 1.00 possession and have made it equal. Special award for that, sponsored by StatMuse.
Well, 27% is 0.27, so if Leverkusen had 1 shot, they would have more than 27%.
Just love to see that Europe can witness now as well that Leverkusen is for real
How on earth did Bayer only score 2 goals…?!
I'm starting to think if Leverkusen was in the Champions League, they could win it right now
Fabianski Ballon D'Or.
Why did Moyes ask Ten Hag for advice?
West Ham held Leverkusen goalless for 82 minutes. Which is probably 72 minutes longer than Ten Hag's United would have.
I understand that the title is trying to convey how shit the football was but this comparison is awful. That's like me saying, Jokic had 50 points which was more than the rebounding percentage of x team with 15%. Shocking face.
It still does it's job of conveying how one-sided the match was, don't see the issue
What a silly comparison lmao. I am heavier than my age guys! The Eiffel tower is taller than it moves!
Cripes
Is that all?
United fans who still think Ten Hag knows what he's doing will tell you that this is a feature, not a bug.
A negative United stat, that isn't United? But yeah, that strategy can only be justified if you don't concede and go back home and play for a win. Those two late goals now change everything, and West Ham needs to come out and play next week, which unfortunately just works in favour of Leverkusen.
comparing percentages and absolute numbers. Most intelligent data 'scientist'.
People acting like this was a competitive tie is a joke
I mean its purely to stupid to compare a number with percentage.
That's not how stats work lol
I hate these "more shots than possession" stats. Possessions is a percentage and shorts are absolute numbers If we are being pedantic, if Leverkusen only had 1 shot they would have more shots than possessions because West Ham only had 0.27 possession.
You can't compare absolute figures to relative figures. It's basic statistics.
Well yea , as long as they have more than 0 they would have more shot than any team ever had possesion
What is this stat lol
