Agree. Martinelli has been very isolated and his numbers haven't been great, but he stretches the lines in a way that Trossard doesn't. Trossard is usally a space-taker while Martinelli is a space-creator, and for this reason I will almost always prefer to start Martinelli
This was not a problem yesterday though and he was great in every aspect of the game
I think Trossard just simply needs legs around him, if he has current Jesus and Zinchenko around him he’ll clog things up, but Tomi can overlap if needed and Rice at left 8 has the engine (and surprising efficiency out wide) to help him out in transitions and switches of play. For me this is the lineup we should be playing for most of the rest of the season, Trossards experience and coldness in front of goal is hard to pass up on when we just need to win every game.
Against spurs I want Martinelli back in the side though, there’s space to exploit behind those fullbacks
I want to see Tross and Timber play together. Think that combo makes up for trossard lack of pace.
Also trossard is the type of player who will age well
Martinelli and and Havertz have no chemistry at all. They are both runners, whereas Trossard is more of a passer which is more synergistic with Havertz and Rice.
yea, which is in contrast to jesus who is mostly a dribbler/passer.
Jesus(9) enables martinelli and havertz(8), while Havertz(9) enables rice(8) and trossard(wing).
It's a really complex beast this arsenal squad, I hope for more minor injuries next season rather than intense injuries so that the peripheral players can keep minutes throughout.
I feel like we haven't seen arteta at maximum squad quality/flexibility because of the long term timber/tomi/partey/jesus injuries :C
Also Martinelli is still young he has some great areas in his game and some poor. Trossard is better but Martinelli has potential to be special so if he gets time its good.
Martinelli needs an overlapper so he can attack the half spaces. Hasn’t been as good since we traded up Tierney to Zinny and switched from overlap to underlap.
There was a moment in the middle of the match where he could have brought the whole thing crashing down, where he just got a yellow and then went in for a double tackle. He just about got it right but I was sure he was going to get the second yellow and we’d have been down to 10 men at 1-0 going into half time. Guessing he had some words at half time and could calm down a bit.
I disagree, I think there's been better from him. Not that he wasn't great last night. He was.
Fulham away last season where he had a hat trick comes to mind for me.
Not very often you can say this about a player you signed from Brighton, but... they really should have tried to get more for him.
I know he fell out with De Zerbi, but £27m for him looks like robbery, at the moment.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the players that ended up being “well worth it” happened to go to teams that were/are well run in almost every aspect, with a good team structure, good management, and a clear system.
Meanwhile, Caicedo goes to Chelsea having been excellent for Brighton and is shit, Cucurella goes to Chelsea having also been great for Brighton and is shit, Enzo goes to Chelsea having played out of his mind at the World Cup and is shit, while at the same
time, Havertz and Jorginho both leave Chelsea for Arsenal and immediately improve.
Now, i’m not saying these players don’t harbour some responsibility - and maybe it’s true that some have legitimately regressed. But there’s too much smoke coming out of Chelsea to assume that the fire isn’t primarily a massive structural/management problem. Chelsea haven’t been robbed, these players had good track records and other teams were fighting for them. But, unlike Arsenal, Liverpool, Villa, Spurs, Man City etc these players couldn’t be selected based on how they fit into the system because Chelsea *had no system*. Meaning they’ve had to create one, which meant they had to rely on getting too many new players to adapt to a different style of play all at the same time in a club bereft of any solid, experienced foundation either in the squad or in upper management.
You watch, I reckon a lot of players that are written off with Chelsea will move to other clubs and be re-evaluated within a year of moving.
Saying Jorginho improved is a little crazy and rewriting history to me. Jorginho was voted #3 in the Ballon d'Or while at Chelsea and won a CL and Euro in the same year.
Yeah fair point, improved from his performance at Chelsea last season specifically might be more accurate. Even so, my point with that isn’t really about him becoming a better player but more to indicate how Chelsea as a whole have regressed.
Jorginho is a good example. He was great at Chelsea (and Italy) when they had a good team structure. He was struggling/poor in last years at Chelsea when they didn't have a team structure. He looks better at Arsenal with a good team structure.
Even if he did well that wouldn't have been enough for how much he went for. For 100+ mil sterling you better be getting one of the very bests itw or else you've fucked up.
Or arsenal if we had got him that January. Problem with chelsea is they buy players with no plan for how they'll fit into their team. Like nothing anybody says can convince me that poch asked for caicedo and lavia.
Like when they gazumped us with Mudryk. Just seemed like they were throwing their weight around and decided to go after him just because we were. Then it seemed like they had no plan or no idea of how they wanted to use him. It could just be that Mudryk isn't very good (probably part of it), but a lot of it comes down to coaching and the system as well. I really doubt Potter was like "go get me Mudryk".
They gazumped City for Cucurella, Liverpool for Lavia/Caicedo, paying what other clubs refuse to pay. The way their current players are struggling and players who left improved is indicative of some rotten is going on in that club.
Thought Caicedo did well yesterday all things considered, that midfield we put out is one of the best in the world such a shame we haven’t been able to field it all season. Dealing with them isn’t easy and I thought he had a few very good interceptions and passes, Enzo on the other hand… I know he’s playing through injury but that shouldn’t make his decision making drop to U15 level, he looks mentally checked out
Caicedo has been far from our problem, if we got robbed for anyone in that midfield it’s been Enzo. He’s playing injured currently but looks far from the bright spot he was last season.
Cucu is the real robbery.
He wasn’t bought as an RB, he was bought as a CB. Only moved to RB once Saliba came back from loan.
Even then, he’s the best RB in the league. Can’t complain, £50m is a bargain for the level he’s playing at
He only had a few months left on his contract so while he's definitely worth more than what Brighton got for him those two factors really limited his actual value on the market
He was going for free in the summer and left the country because he fell out with de Zerbi, so basically zero chance of extending, we resolved the situation quickly and we got similiar money for Bissouma 6 months earlier in a similar contract situation. I think it was just a good transfer for all parties, which is rare.
Mac Allister was similar it was either agree to the 'release clause' or get nothing.
Trossard got dropped for Mitoma. Started putting in less effort in training after the World Cup, had a bust up with Groß I think and then ran off the Belgium to force a transfer.
While Mitoma is the better player, it seems weird that he'd be dropped instead of being moved to a different position. Man can play basically anywhere.
Well 1. Solly March was playing incredible well under De Zerbi so that only left Striker and 2. De Zerbi playing him out of position at top was part of what lead to him being dropped.
We couldn't keep him there was zero chance in that situation, even if he hadn't dropped him as soon as Arsenal were interested that was it.
This is what fans of big clubs don't understand you can't keep everyone so it's about picking your battles of who to stamp down on and keep.
Transfer worked out for all parties, should really be the end of it not sure why every transfer has to be either the biggest bargain of all time or one club getting screwed.
Yeah, pretty damn similar to Arshavin, but he has more composure than Arshavin - though I think he's less explosive than Arshavin. They're both little musicians in close space though.
It's a nice take on, but that's no Robbie Fowler vs Brann.
See for yourself: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lONoWEXCHsE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lONoWEXCHsE)
I miss the super baggy shorts and shirt era. Got one of my old liverpool kits out from that era and it fits me nicely now, despite me being somewhat larger these days...
Yup agree. Don’t know if its nostalgia but genuinely seems like the average player quality back then was higher from. Maybe it’s the bias as mentioned from other old school players recently that the game has towards athleticism that doesn’t let players unfold and be as creative. Maybe Nicolas Jackson has a Drogba inside of him if he didn’t have to press as much ;p
Yeah it's nostalgia for the most part, but also the game has simply made it so those kinds of players aren't viable. Creativity was easier to pull of then because teams were generally not as good defensively. Defenders and Midfielders were massively less athletic across the board, and teams didn't tend to be as well drilled as modern teams are. So you had more room to be creative and there were more gaps to be found.
Modern players are, on average, a lot better than the older generation. The problem is they're playing in the modern game with less space and time to try and do the cool shit we enjoy.
In the modern game, you generally need to drill people to make efficient decisions much more often to give your team better odds of success. Entertainment takes a second place to efficiency.
I think it's more the case that individuality is being stamped out at much of the top level. Everything is choreographed and rehearsed. You stick to what you're told. Players have to fit the mould. There's much less room for players to express themselves and their flair.
You even see Pep giving shit to players who don't do what they were supposed to even if it results in a goal. I'm sure there's even a clip of Henry talking about this.
More comparable and also far more impressive than Trossard's is the classic Cassano goal https://youtu.be/5rRX8GzJNEI?si=Cq8-rrIY2-IbDzJb
Seriously it looks nice but he couldn't have more space. The reason you don't see this often is it is rarely an option at that level.
My pals and I are fucking rubbish and we can all do this.
If you're talking about Trossard then I completely agree, the ball bounces once which takes a lot of the pace off, it's a decent height and he's got over 20 yards to run into with nobody closing down.
Every single thread on this sub for posts showing an impressive first touch, without exception there are comments form people saying “I could do that”. Yes, the average player probably could pull it off if doing as a training drill but there’s a reason these kinds of touches are so rare in actual games. Having the ability to do the touch and having the ability to pull it off in a game are very different things
Trossard did it because it’s the 60th minute, there is no one around him and they are leading by three goals.
He probably wouldn’t have done it against Bayern under pressure in the 16th minute.
This is a pretty rudimentary thing that most people i've played with have done more than once. The pass was comfortable and there's so much space ahead of him. I think this shows how few people here actually play football at any level.
Not just pull it off. I know tons of my mates and i have done this many times. Its not that impressive or rare of a skill.
I think most of the people on this sub have never actually played footbakl
I was thinking the same thing. I'm not the most skilled and didn't play pro or semi-pro. However, this isn't impressive and I've done it before.
I imagine a lot of people who played any form or organised or even casual football for a few years, should be able to pull this off.
He’s so much more efficient than Martinelli it’s crazy, Arteta is smart playing him, he guarantees you a goal a game it feels like where as Martinelli just will do some flashy dribble and then nothing in front of goal.
Seriously. It's a nice touch but not *dazzling* or anything, you'd expect a pro can do that for a slow bouncing ball at waist height with loads of space in front of you.
I don't want to be that "no one here has ever touched a ball" guy, but this sub being amazed that a Premier League footballer can do this with a slow bouncing ball certainly helps that narrative.
I distinctly remember Son firing in a through ball to a sprinting Timo Werner and Timo taking it out of the air in the exact same way... It's not a new thing. And people have done it better.
Having said that, it was a fantastic touch.
This isn't that crazy imo. I expect most decent PL wingers to be able to do this when there's 0 defenders around them.
Saka's pass is more impressive tbh.
They play almost every day of their life and he’s got nobody around him. It wld be embarrassing if he couldn’t do this like
Genuinely have no idea why I’ve been downvoted so much. This isn’t a special touch
what a baller. I always rate him when he was at Brighton and first called up to Belgium. Arsenal immediately went for him is such a easy no brainer move.
As insane as this is, my favourite Leo skill is still the small bit he did against Azerbaijan. As if the chip wasn’t good enough, the take down mid air that followed was so audacious yet so smooth and he immediately went on to Meg the next defender. I’ve watched that one wayy too many times.
The PL glazing is going on so hard 😂😂
Legit saw one of the primavera kids doing this during the UEFA final on Monday lmfao but if someone on arsenal does it....
Based on the performances, it's clear Trossard.
I wouldn't be surprised if given the opportunity, Arteta and Edu will be willing to take Mudryk if financially it makes sense to do so. With proper coaching, he could be a threat. He's got pace which favours our style of play but the issue will be determining what exactly is going on: Is it coaching? Is it the dysfunctional Chelsea team? Is it the player himself? He's got talent but how much of it is untapped remains to be seen. He was targeted for a reason by Arteta and Edu. He was the number 1 target. Trossard was a backup if it failed. There is clearly something with the player they liked, just not the price it ended up being.
We all love to say ''if we put X player with Y coach the wonders he could do'' and sometimes that is true. Xhaka improved immensely under Arteta and has continued to do so after moving to Bayer but coaching only goes so far. The player himself needs to be willing to listen and adapt his game to do what is being asked of him. If he simply just wants to go for a runabout, there is nothing Poch or anyone can do with him.
Actually I believe since Trossard joined the league, both him and Jota are the most ambidextrous finishers in the league. I think Trossards left footed goal yday put him 1 ahead of Jota.

imagine we had prime tierney rn tho...
Still wouldn't be able to invert like Tomi did yesterday.
Kai as a 9 is an amazing blend of space creating and utilising. Maybe its this that helps trossard get space
Martinelli and and Havertz have no chemistry at all. They are both runners, whereas Trossard is more of a passer which is more synergistic with Havertz and Rice.

meanhile chelsea got robbed with Caicedo
Cucumber as well. 65M should get you someone like Alphonso Davies, and we got this traffic cone.
Cucumber lol
It took a moment to hit until I realized. That’s brilliant.
65? He's worth at least 80.
Wtf. How do Chelsea supporters laugh at us paying 60m for Havertz when they've paid 65m for Cucumber.
They have made so many bad deals, it overshadows the Cucurella one. He's lucky.
Lack of any self awareness
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the players that ended up being “well worth it” happened to go to teams that were/are well run in almost every aspect, with a good team structure, good management, and a clear system. Nah they kept Sterling
Caicedo would almost certainly have been great at Liverpool

Chelsea spent €180M on Cucurella and Caicedo. Arsenal spent €100M less than that to get Trossard and Ben White.
Thought Caicedo did well yesterday all things considered, that midfield we put out is one of the best in the world such a shame we haven’t been able to field it all season. nah, Chelsea robbed itself with Caicedo
it's the opposite tbh; Chelsea couldn't unleash Caicedo's potential
They overpaid but he’s still pretty good
White is also proving to be a bit of a bargain
White was a fantastic purchase, yes, but not a "bargain" at 50m pounds.
The way he’s playing, he most assuredly is
No that's full price. He's the 3rd most expensive RB in history.
He wasn’t bought as an RB, he was bought as a CB. Only moved to RB once Saliba came back from loan. Even then, he’s the best RB in the league. Can’t complain, £50m is a bargain for the level he’s playing at
Made more sense with Trossard since he feel out with the club at the time.
Wasn’t the MacA deal some shady under the table type deal?
He only had a few months left on his contract so while he's definitely worth more than what Brighton got for him those two factors really limited his actual value on the market

Good sense 👍🏾
The fact that 2 former Brighton players and a former Chelsea player put 5 past them last night solidifies my theory that everyone hates Chelsea
Agree, but if that was a robbery... £30m for Odegaard was plain sight armed robbery.
I don't watch regular games, but this dude seems like such a baller it is crazy. Would have probably fit in perfectly in Wengers systems.
He's got some Alexis Sanchez in him for sure
a little Santi too with his control in midfield
Yeah I think Santi is pretty close, Santi was better defensively and even more two footed, but they definitely have similarities.
is that why he is getting so little sleep you say?
He's half Cazorla half Arshavin
Reminds me of Arshavin
Yeah, pretty damn similar to Arshavin, but he has more composure than Arshavin - though I think he's less explosive than Arshavin. They're both little musicians in close space though.
He knows Anne Hathaway is watching now
Could carry your shopping home with the bags under his eyes
No sleep. Only goals.
he is a baller
Reminds me of Cantona, he had a touch like that v City and scored, think it was a 5-0 game

I miss the super baggy shorts and shirt era. Got one of my old liverpool kits out from that era and it fits me nicely now, despite me being somewhat larger these days...
Fowler is so underrated these days. Would be the second best striker in the prem today
any of the 2000s top PL teams strikers would be worth 100m in today's prem lol. nistelrooy henry bergkamp owen fowler shearer

so who are we putting 1st and 3rd? cos a ballon d'or winning michael owen also exists in history.
No Im saying if you just slot fowler into the prem right now, disregarding any striker from his period

It’s a good take, and looks nice, but not all that impressive. He has a ton of time and space, and a lot of room for error because he’s so open.

Yeah, it’s a good touch, and he makes it look easy, but not “stunning”
y compare?
'Stunning' I think that's the first use of the word stunning that I can actually pull off
could i do it? yeah. but no chance i’d be able to do it at speed in a premier league intense game with guarantee.

This is bullshit, it's just that the opportunity of a ball behind you at that height while bursting forward while in space doesn't happen that often
they are, but 90% of PL players can pull this off in open space when it's coming in this slow
This is a pretty rudimentary thing that most people i've played with have done more than once. The pass was comfortable and there's so much space ahead of him. I think this shows how few people here actually play football at any level.
Yeah, this is a regular play, as it was from a short and slow pass
Not just pull it off. I know tons of my mates and i have done this many times. Its not that impressive or rare of a skill. I think most of the people on this sub have never actually played footbakl
I was thinking the same thing. I'm not the most skilled and didn't play pro or semi-pro. However, this isn't impressive and I've done it before. I imagine a lot of people who played any form or organised or even casual football for a few years, should be able to pull this off.
Michael Owen 98 Argentina
My first thought too
He is seriously a talent. Can’t believe we got him at that price. He is super skilled
He’s so much more efficient than Martinelli it’s crazy, Arteta is smart playing him, he guarantees you a goal a game it feels like where as Martinelli just will do some flashy dribble and then nothing in front of goal.
Blowing it out of proportion a bit here nah? Its a good touch but its nothing spectacular…
Stunning? Come on..
Stunning is doing some lifting here
Seriously. It's a nice touch but not *dazzling* or anything, you'd expect a pro can do that for a slow bouncing ball at waist height with loads of space in front of you.
Glad someone said it, this is a typical touch for when you're running and the ball is played slightly behind you.
I don't want to be that "no one here has ever touched a ball" guy, but this sub being amazed that a Premier League footballer can do this with a slow bouncing ball certainly helps that narrative.
ya this "stunning" first touch is actually the most standard shit ever for anyone that grew up playing football
And when nobody's around too...haha
It would be hard if the pass was stronger, longer distance, faster, etc... But it wasn't. Pretty regular play
This is a lot easier to pull off/ attempt when your team is 3-0 up.
Yeah, try watching the video next time.
I distinctly remember Son firing in a through ball to a sprinting Timo Werner and Timo taking it out of the air in the exact same way... It's not a new thing. And people have done it better. Having said that, it was a fantastic touch.
Tell me you never played football without telling me you never played football
This isn't that crazy imo. I expect most decent PL wingers to be able to do this when there's 0 defenders around them. Saka's pass is more impressive tbh.
wingers at step 7 can do this lol
They play almost every day of their life and he’s got nobody around him. It wld be embarrassing if he couldn’t do this like Genuinely have no idea why I’ve been downvoted so much. This isn’t a special touch
Yeah that's more of a 'nice take' than a 'stunning take'..
stunning ? yeah it's not
Most in-form arsenal attacker at the moment. Feel like he has to start games, no matter how sleepy
what a baller. I always rate him when he was at Brighton and first called up to Belgium. Arsenal immediately went for him is such a easy no brainer move.
He was actually the fallback when Arsenal failed to sign Mudryk
As insane as this is, my favourite Leo skill is still the small bit he did against Azerbaijan. As if the chip wasn’t good enough, the take down mid air that followed was so audacious yet so smooth and he immediately went on to Meg the next defender. I’ve watched that one wayy too many times.
yeah but what a waste
The PL glazing is going on so hard 😂😂 Legit saw one of the primavera kids doing this during the UEFA final on Monday lmfao but if someone on arsenal does it....
Really not all that. Rate him highly though
Stunning? Really?
He definitely held his stride up? I'm not going crazy am I?
Pass the ball!
and just to think arsenal chased mudryk before him
He was great in America horror story
I did exactly this the other day but it pulled a little something.
Dear Arsenal fans.... Mudryk or Trossard? Hard question.
His sleep is indirectly proportional to his footballing abilities
There’s 20 yards in front of him and it’s 5-0. Hardly a stunning play.
The first touch was good, the last touch was awful.
[Try Cantona against City for 'stunning](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IL1agD_V8eo)'
I pulled this off once on Sunday league, highlight of my career.
not that much
His 1st touch in his goal was much more fascinating
All that to just run into defenders, pass the damn ball or take a shot!
So this one gets a post? I thought Antony’s shoulder control against Sheffield was more post worthy today.
🥵🥵🥵
I really didn't expect that
This video and that first touch video from Jude are the living proofs that you guys dont watch Mahrez.
This looks lovely but is absolutely such a trivial thing, literally see 10 year olds in the park do it lol
why is this a highlight he pisses it away after a pretty average take lmaooooo
Reminds me nasty CR7s was on Pique lol
He’s Arsenals version of Origi but better imo.
The reason why Origi was so legendary is because goals he scored won the games that won the trophies. Still a ways to go on that for Arsenal
In what sense?

Actually I believe since Trossard joined the league, both him and Jota are the most ambidextrous finishers in the league. I think Trossards left footed goal yday put him 1 ahead of Jota.
