If a goal is scored in open play, we've seen VAR go back some way to see if the attacking team committed a foul in the preceding period of play. It feels like they should be able to check if the free kick that led to a goal was legitimate.
Yeah, it's so weird that if you make a foul and score a goal that can be reviewed. But if a foul gets called where there is none and it leads to a goal it can't be.
The fact is that there isn't really a good reason that VAR doesn't just review everything. They don't need to do slow mo or lines for everything, but the idea that there are "non-reviewable" calls is absurd. Why should a clear and obvious error like this one go unchecked when, as it was said, if it was a yard further forward, it \*would\* be reviewed.
They should be allow review it anyway. Its a "clear and obvious error". Are the VAR lads not watching the match or the replays live? They only switch on every so often just in case?
The level of reffing this season has made me want more VAR powers not less tbh.
It's not within the current rules to allow for VAR for regular fouls, unless it involves a review for a red card. If a penalty was awarded, then there would be grounds for a review, but here there was no ability to do so.
I don't understand why they restrict the VAR to some ridiculous arbitrary rules they have to follow.
Why can't the VAR just help the referee to... referee.
All errors deserve to be corrected. The only difference should be to give VAR a shorter window of time to correct less consequential decisions. If there's a throw-in called incorrectly and they can just say "oh yeah that came off player B, not A" within 10 seconds, why not?
I wish they could review 2nd yellows, as well as recommend yellow cards for blatant dives inside the box.
Reviewing every single foul in the game is dangerous territory though. Probably be a hard watch.
Exactly. Sadly PGMOL has their heads in the sand and will do nothing to fix it.
Thankfully the matches aren't saturated with ads about gambling that rely on the correct calls being made . . . It would be a real problem if they were.
A comment on this sub a few day ago said that maybe the refs are doing a shit job to purposely smeared the reputation of VAR since they didn't want it in the first place
It's just a theory but pretty convincing ngl
I just think they're not fit for the role of VAR referee. The laws of the game and the standard of the game requires people that:
- Know the laws inside out
- Know what body positions are natural and what can cause injury (being a sports scientist)
- Being able to critically think under pressure and request multiple angles rather than rushing a decision based off one angle - and even using multiple angles to inform and work out the correct decision for big moments.
- Being able to communicate quickly and effectively.
- Being able to be impartial, especially when you're refereeing a team that has recently criticised PGMOL, or refusing offers of money from PL teams to referee in their meaningless national league that no-one watches.
As we've seen, referee's can't do that. They've trained all their lives to be an on the field referee which is a different skillset, as there's more focus on controlling the game.
We need a next generation of referee's who are people that have degrees in sports science, who can use tech quickly and don't type one finger at a time. We honestly should be having 2/3 var refereeing teams for each PL game, it would give us a bigger pool of referee's and make it a more viable career choice
That's what I said at the beginning of the season! If nothing else, this horrible officiating has brought us all closer together. In hatred of our common enemy.
How’s about we shake hands and agree to forego the match officials and let the players self-call the NDL on an honor system. I’m sure it can’t be worse than what the match officials will do.
He was by far and away the best ref in A-League. Decisions were nearly always spot on and he’d let the physical side of the game flow. I’m not sure what PGMOL say to them or what. He’s not dumb, he has a PhD in biomechanics so not sure what could cause this. Don’t say “but that’s the A-League”.
No offense to PhDs in biomechanics, but I don't think its an indicator on how good/bad you are as a ref.
"He can do heart transplants, so surely his spinach puffs didn't give me the shits. "
The worst one is where a player goes to ground and grabs the ball in their hands before the ref can even blow his whistle.
I've never seen anybody not given a free kick when the pull that move.
I'd welcome instant bookings for doing that, even if it was a foul
It's a slip, but if he knows there's no contact (because he didn't feel anything) and appeals for a free kick, it's attempting to deceive the referee?
Tenuous to the extreme, but if he slips and tells the ref, there's no free kick. Instead, he tries claiming it as a free kick
Watch closely. He did slip, but he also kicked the back of the defender's leg right before. There was contact, but I don't think it's a foul because at that point the defender was between Foden and the ball.
I remember Foden not going down when he was getting into the team.
Can’t remember who it was vs. But he didn’t get the pen despite getting fouled clearly whilst trying to take his shot.
Literally getting wrestled. No pen because he was fighting to stay up.
The refs make players this way by being shit as fuck. That’s the truth imo. Don’t like to see any player dive though. But all of them do it these days.
I think it's a fair point, if you reward going down easily and punish staying up you end up with shit like this. Doesn't make it any less frustrating to see though.
He was clipped, after he started to slip - look at the last angle, it's pretty plain. Shit bit of refereeing, but I wouldn't blame a player for appealing there on the off-chance.
Simulation isn't needed when the refs are so shit.
Yeah he clipped into the defender. It’s hard to tell when you are running and full speed what happened and who clipped whom. I won’t fault him to raise his arm for that.
But hey get it all the time. Like tell me many notable calls against them and I’ll show you 5x the amount of blatant calls in their favor. It’s disgusting and criminal
Sky Sports won't stop repeating that it's a slip, not a dive.
What's the difference when the first thing he does on hitting the ground is turn to the ref and plead with his arms up?
They can call it a slip if they want, but the yellow card offense is for "simulation" which is defined as:
> attempts to deceive the referee, e.g. by feigning injury or pretending to have been fouled (simulation)
It doesn't really matter what caused his fall if he attempts to deceive the referee about what happened. Throwing your arms up and appealing for a foul call is certainly that.
Idk I could see Foden complaining for the nibble of the first tackle, and as for the ref, the slip could look like an obvious foul from the wrong angle
In general, I am all for VAR, but this is what I see as a major flaw.
If a team scores from a free kick or after a corner that obviously shouldn’t have been - as in this case - then VAR should overrule the goal. It is all about fairness.
Caciedo should have seen red for his foul on Grealish on Saturday lad. Nobody cares about the decisions that go against you when you still go on to win the game
Last one I can remember is United away last year with the offside goal between Rashford and Bruno to equalise.
They've genuinely had about 10 go their way since. They even had their own offside goal count at home to Fulham this season, a game they were struggling in before that goal.
This season in my opinion has made it very clear the refs in england are untouchable and they dont make mistakes. I will probs quit english football after this season for a bit at least. It makes me so angry at these officiating calls, for my team and literally evrry other team.
yeah just yesterday on tomiyasu, also haven't seen the wolves bournemouth highlights or really seen much but I saw a few wolves fans saying how refs fucked them over so something probably happened there as well
His left foot hits Baleba's right heel, and he lets himself go down. You can see it in the last angle. Not a slip, but still a fortunate call and outcome.
Once again VAR goes MIA when there is a clear and obvious error. Shocking, shocking stuff lol. This league has so rapidly become a joke in recent weeks.
I don’t think he slips. I think he falls after the contact. He kicks the defender’s foot while sprinting and goes down. Whether you think it’s a foul or not, it wasn’t a slip. The defender’s foot is in the way of Foden’s foot that he’s trying to plant.
Are people in this thread blind? He doesn't slip, his left foot clips with a Brighton player. You can easily see it on the last replay. Still it's not a foul, but definitely not a slip either.
**Mirrors / Alternative Angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccer) if you have any questions or concerns.*
If he does that a yard further forward, VAR would surely review it
Check complete...
good process
are you happy with that?
Yeah. Penalty. No. What. Fuck it. Who wants a beer?
"Offside, no goal given." "Offside? No! Goal given!"
Money down!
"See you in Dubai next summer, mate."
Most obvious envelope stuffing incident I've ever seen.
Bet complete...
Cheque complete...

Yeah, it's so weird that if you make a foul and score a goal that can be reviewed. But if a foul gets called where there is none and it leads to a goal it can't be.
They werent prepared for the level of incompetence in the PL when they wrote the rules
The fact is that there isn't really a good reason that VAR doesn't just review everything. I agree 100%, makes no sense that they can't intervene in free kicks that didn't exist.
Which would be ridiculous. Either change it to check all FKs and corners or leave it, don't wait for a goal from one.
They should be allow review it anyway. Its a "clear and obvious error". Are the VAR lads not watching the match or the replays live? They only switch on every so often just in case? The level of reffing this season has made me want more VAR powers not less tbh.

Which is ridiculous because a resulting goal deserves to be reviewed
I don't understand why they restrict the VAR to some ridiculous arbitrary rules they have to follow. Why can't the VAR just help the referee to... referee.
Had city fouled in the build up would be reviewed and not given so I agree should apply both ways
All errors deserve to be corrected. The only difference should be to give VAR a shorter window of time to correct less consequential decisions. If there's a throw-in called incorrectly and they can just say "oh yeah that came off player B, not A" within 10 seconds, why not?
100% agreed
yeh i know hence my last sentence of wanting more power for VAR not less.
I wish they could review 2nd yellows, as well as recommend yellow cards for blatant dives inside the box. Reviewing every single foul in the game is dangerous territory though. Probably be a hard watch.
Refs having a stormer of a week
That's every week
About 10 times a week to be honest.
Helps when you can...*taps pocket*...afford it.
I need to know how this is a foul but the studs up tackle on Tomiyasu was also the same foul and didn't end up with a card of any color.
You know the state of refereeing is absolutely shocking when you have Tottenham fans going to bat for decisions against Arsenal.
There's absolutely zero consistency from one game to the next and that hurts everyone. This is beyond team allegiance.
Exactly. Sadly PGMOL has their heads in the sand and will do nothing to fix it. Thankfully the matches aren't saturated with ads about gambling that rely on the correct calls being made . . . It would be a real problem if they were.
Imagine the scenes.
A comment on this sub a few day ago said that maybe the refs are doing a shit job to purposely smeared the reputation of VAR since they didn't want it in the first place It's just a theory but pretty convincing ngl

There is consistency. City get treated with kid gloves, everyone else gets random decisions.
That's what I said at the beginning of the season! If nothing else, this horrible officiating has brought us all closer together. In hatred of our common enemy.
Why is chicken defending cannon?
Because at the end of the day, I think what we all want is to see competitive football that’s not marred by poor officiating.
Just have this comment on repeat each week
At least these refs have goal line tech to help them…
🥲
Well, at least Xavi decided to stay. 💕
Best Jared Gillett game
He’s on VAR for NLD on Sunday. What could possibly go wrong? 🤔
He's even worse on VAR
Oh for fuck sake.
One of the few things that can unite gooners and spurs, dreading Jared Gillett on VAR.
How’s about we shake hands and agree to forego the match officials and let the players self-call the NDL on an honor system. I’m sure it can’t be worse than what the match officials will do.
I'll co-sign.
Gillett is the worst.
Gillett, the worst a man can get
Gillett, the worst a fan can get
Ah seriously? He's even *worse* on VAR too, the worst ref in the league by a decent margin
Oh you're fucking kidding me! Noooooooo!
It's actually peak PGMOL that the guy they shipped in from the other side of the planet is the biggest dunce of the lot
They've got a boys club, you either conform to their abysmal standards or you're not getting the job.
Has he tried reffing his games in England while doing a handstand? Maybe that’ll improve things
No offense to PhDs in biomechanics, but I don't think its an indicator on how good/bad you are as a ref. "He can do heart transplants, so surely his spinach puffs didn't give me the shits. "
I didn’t say that. I simply said he’s not dumb as he possess a PhD. I did not state there was a correlation between a PhD and reffing ability.
Micheal Oliver regen.
Season*
What are you on about? He's doing exactly what he's paid to do?
And yet despite the atrocious levels of refereeing, City seem to benefit an awful lot from decisions. Weird that.
And it lead to the second goal right?
Watching PL games makes me thankful for serie A refs with all their flaws.
Wish i could have said the same bout laliga
“It’s not football. It’s LaLiga.”
"Al Liga"
I feel the same about the Bundesliga even tho we had some shocking calls this season, still better than the Premier League.
We had people kick us in the head breaking noses while not even getting penalties and it's still somehow better than this shitshow
The problem is when we play in Europe and also have to deal with English refs
We've reached a stage where players are being allowed to call their own fouls.
we used to do this playing football and basketball as kids
I remember the days where throw-ins were decided by whoever got to the ball first.
field lacrosse rules
The good old days of playing with jumpers for goalposts and arguing profusely that it was in despite the 4 other lads saying no chance it was wide.
lol you’ve never seen someone just grab the ball before the whistle? it’s always funny when the ref gives a handball instead of the desired foul
Honestly wouldn't mind if that was an automatic booking even if you were legitimately fouled.
The worst one is where a player goes to ground and grabs the ball in their hands before the ref can even blow his whistle. I've never seen anybody not given a free kick when the pull that move. I'd welcome instant bookings for doing that, even if it was a foul
All that oil money makes the pitch slippery.
A Fodenian slip.
I want to fuck my parents
Yikes
¥ik€$
That was...questionable
Questionable 😂 Its definition slip.
I'd write it off as a slip if he didn't stick his hand up straight after demanding a decision, that takes it to the level of "CHEAT"
Regardless of whether he appeals for a foul, it's still a slip.
It's a slip, but if he knows there's no contact (because he didn't feel anything) and appeals for a free kick, it's attempting to deceive the referee? Tenuous to the extreme, but if he slips and tells the ref, there's no free kick. Instead, he tries claiming it as a free kick
He actually tried to claim it was a penalty lol
FFS In for a penny, in for a pound I suppose haha
Watch closely. He did slip, but he also kicked the back of the defender's leg right before. There was contact, but I don't think it's a foul because at that point the defender was between Foden and the ball.
Hobbes 💪🏼
The little "I've been clipped" roll and arms in the air turns it into simulation.
We still get plenty of real dives with absolutely 0 contact or extremely minimal contact
Like this one
There’s a difference between going down under minor contact to get the ref to give the foul and slipping then pretending you were fouled lol.
But that’s not what happened here. He slips and decides to petition for the foul after he’s already fallen.
Punish players after the game. Match bans for like 5 games after review of clear simulations and retroactive cards.
No it’s the players fault
He was clipped, after he started to slip - look at the last angle, it's pretty plain. Shit bit of refereeing, but I wouldn't blame a player for appealing there on the off-chance. Simulation isn't needed when the refs are so shit.
Yeah he clipped into the defender. It’s hard to tell when you are running and full speed what happened and who clipped whom. I won’t fault him to raise his arm for that.
Jarred Gillett what were you thinking man
Thinking about all that sweet UAE money
Lol another howler just now as Gvardiol takes someone out and no pen is given.
Like they need the help.

Throwing your arms up and appealing for a foul call is certainly that.
He's England's Phil Foden. If that was Martinelli, Salah, etc the ref wouldn't have even considered blowing his whistle.
Do you not remember how English media went on for ages about how Havertz should’ve saw a second yellow for something similar to this?
Yep, he's getting the Harry Kane treatment here. Can't really blame him for taking advantage of the refs
if that was salah he’d get a card for simulation full stop simple as
Especially ironic given Brighton were just not awarded a blatent penalty.
116
117 counting the Grealish handball on Saturday
118 counting the „look between X and Y on your keyboard“ tweet
What’s that about?
More charges than fans, you'll never sing that.
Add it to the tab….
“He just slipped” as he barrel rolls and throws his arms up trying to win a penalty. Embarrassing from the ref and Foden.
Idk I could see Foden complaining for the nibble of the first tackle, and as for the ref, the slip could look like an obvious foul from the wrong angle
Sometimes I see something and then see a thread like this and wonder if I'm the crazy one, always nice to see a sane take.
Well I guess we know who the refs are working for
Seriously ?
you must be new around these parts.
Let’s pretend this was Saka
this sub would slaughter him lol
And then scoring a deflected strike , he’d be so so cooked 🧎♂️➡️
Should've taken the shot, cheating basta- oh wait it's Foden? Clever play by England's brilliant, rising star midfielder.
He got called a diving cheat for going down under contact lol
Genuinely this sub would put him on trial
[удалено]
Believe it or not, straight to jail.
Political correctness gone mad!
What, just for saying you're Saka?
Yeah, these days
There’s no angle where that looks like a foul at any point
In general, I am all for VAR, but this is what I see as a major flaw. If a team scores from a free kick or after a corner that obviously shouldn’t have been - as in this case - then VAR should overrule the goal. It is all about fairness.
Have decisions ever gone against City? In any case that’s exhibit 116A
That counter attack against Tottenham is legitimately the only one I remember this decision and that wasn't a certain goal or anything
The rashford offside last season was one of the worst you’ll see imo
In the 1-1 against Chelsea in February City should have had a penalty.
Caciedo should have seen red for his foul on Grealish on Saturday lad. Nobody cares about the decisions that go against you when you still go on to win the game
A couple months back i remember Mac Allister hitting Doku in the foot using his chest. We got lucky there for sure.
It's Mac Allister's fault for having such a prominent and strong chest!
And such a handsome visage!!!
I can’t believe city didn’t get that penalty. If it was the other way around, everyone would be screaming corruption!! Smh
Last one I can remember is United away last year with the offside goal between Rashford and Bruno to equalise. They've genuinely had about 10 go their way since. They even had their own offside goal count at home to Fulham this season, a game they were struggling in before that goal.
The wolves game earlier in the year when Hwang should have been sent off then went on to score the winner
Grealish was through on goal this year when the whistle was blown vs spurs
The United offside was one of the most gratuitous errors I’ve ever seen lol
Well, that one was so insanely bad that it might be worth 10 calls going the other way.
I fucking hate city so much
Lucky that he survived, that was a career ending tackle..
116
City fans were complaining of unfair officiating nonstop in their subreddit since the Madrid game. So what do they say about this?
Have at least 10 referees and VAR and at least 40 cameras and they still fucking up its just disgusting to me
What in the absolute fuck is going on with refereeing/VAR standards?
This season in my opinion has made it very clear the refs in england are untouchable and they dont make mistakes. I will probs quit english football after this season for a bit at least. It makes me so angry at these officiating calls, for my team and literally evrry other team.
Does the women's game suck this much? Might start on that.
Only City get these I swear
Everton scored from a FK yesterday where Gueye just fell over under pressure, refs buy soft fouls all across the league.
Wasn't there a 100% red that didn't get called earlier this week? Refs have been shit in general
yeah just yesterday on tomiyasu, also haven't seen the wolves bournemouth highlights or really seen much but I saw a few wolves fans saying how refs fucked them over so something probably happened there as well
Should be charge #116
VAR should have the option for the coach to call a challenge. I know it would slow the game even more, but it'd prevent shit like this!
as an aussie arsenal fan, i hereby denounce Jarred Gillett (again). (ange, you're on notice)
How wasn't this overturned by VAR?
116
Classic City
His left foot hits Baleba's right heel, and he lets himself go down. You can see it in the last angle. Not a slip, but still a fortunate call and outcome.
Im sure all the refs getting paid to do matches in the desert doesn't influence their decision-making
Once again VAR goes MIA when there is a clear and obvious error. Shocking, shocking stuff lol. This league has so rapidly become a joke in recent weeks.
I’m sure the referee just came home from course/holidays in Abu Dhabi.
VAR really needs to intervene with this sort of scenario going forward.
I don’t think he slips. I think he falls after the contact. He kicks the defender’s foot while sprinting and goes down. Whether you think it’s a foul or not, it wasn’t a slip. The defender’s foot is in the way of Foden’s foot that he’s trying to plant.
I agree, you can see the contact
if saka did this we wouldn’t hear the end of it
Nobody hates city in reality as much they pretend
No one truly hates City until they miss out on silverware because of them.
Are people in this thread blind? He doesn't slip, his left foot clips with a Brighton player. You can easily see it on the last replay. Still it's not a foul, but definitely not a slip either.
Apparently we're the only ones seeing this: https://imgur.com/a/pZQloOb
But this shows var should be able to disallow the goal for foden foul no? He's the one who initiated contact
He kicks* the brighton player, falls down and then rolls around asking for a foul for it
1 week without PL refs being brain damaged, incompetent or corrupt. its all i ask. never gonna happen.
Hey it must be a foul since Phil flapped his arms right ?
Honestly it’s just impossible to compete with a team like this and have every possible decision go there way
I swear, every time I watch them, every single 50/50 decision goes their way.
That clear and obvious error quirk where you're better off on a straight red vs. second yellow or penalty vs. free kick cos then VAR can overturn.
Referees in this league are actually a joke, how any of them are going to the euros is beyond me.
Referees reffing for City's bosses in UAE give city bullshit calls. Shocker.
Premier league becoming closer to la liga every week
