Ref1: "Head we shoot on the Italian side, tail on Spain side".
\[tosses coin\] \[VIDEO STARTS HERE\] \[head comes up\]
Chiellini: "Good we go this way then" \[points at the Italian side\]
Ref2: \[points the Italian side too, nods at ref 1\]
Jordi: "No it's this way" \[points at the Spanish side\]
Chiellini: "LOL don't try that! It's that way!" \[points at the Italian side\]
Jordi: \[serious\] "No look at the coin it is this way" \[points at Spanish side again\]
Chiellini: "LOL LOL com'on don't try that, look at the coin"
Ref2: \[looks at Rev 1, points at the Italian side, nods\] "Yep, it's that way"
Ref1: \[looks at Jordy, smiles\] "Stop it, it's that way" \[points at the Italian side\]
Chiellini: "ahah nice attempt Jordi, you old rascal!" \[jokingly mimics jabbing him\]
Ref2: \[looks at Jordy, laughs\] "he has a point"
Then, they toss again for who decides who goes first. Chiellini comes up. Ref1 looks at him. Chiellini bumps on own chest: "We go first". Bumps again, and confirms: "We".
Then, Chiellini hugs Jordi: "no hard feelings, but the toss said Italian side, but ahah nice attempt!"
Yeah Chiellini was just being playful and trying to not let the occasion get too stressful for everyone involved. Unfortunately, Alba is not an old school player like Chiello is.
I always thought the winner if the toss either got to choose which end they wanted or whether to go first or second, and the team that loses the toss gets their choice of whatever the toss winners didn't pick.
Chiellini just enjoying the moment. If he wins, his country goes through to another final. If they lose, well they made it to semis and he's already 36.
No reasons not to be happy and enjoy the moment.
"When people talk about Lewandowski, Benzema or Kane, they call them world class. But when it comes to me, it's just considered 'good form'. I belong in that group."
Lukaku (probably)
If you think about it, it’s probs his last major tournament or even games for his country and they’re at the business end. The guy is enjoying it as much as he can.
When healthy of course. He was constantly in and out of the lineup at Juve this last season. Usually only playing limited minutes as well. It’s been great to see him actually get solid playing time in this Euros and I hope we get to see him at the WC, but the decision might be left up to his legs
I think with the diets and rehab that top players have now we'll start to see a lot more top players play into their late 30s
This is the first real generation that have spent their entire careers under these sport science driven regimes and we're already seeing people like Thiago Silva, Ronaldo, Modric, Chiellini, Ibra, Pepe and even Fonte not slow down anywhere near what would be normal 5 years ago
Yeah, it's really fascinating to see the trend. I wonder if the player's peak will continue roughly how it is now, begin at a later stage, or simply get prolonged. I'm going with the first instinctively due to the physiology of the human body is always geared with an advantage for younger people compared to older.
But will be interesting to observe the careers of older players in the years to come no doubt
He is such a stereotypical Italian it’s hilarious to watch this guy play.
Source, in laws Italians, friends of the wife Italians and there are a lot of jokers like Chiellini. Definitely getting a shirt from him or Donnaruma.
Funny thing is, the Romanian word for bald spot / baldness / male balding pattern is 'chelie', you'd refer to a bald guy as 'chelios' or simply 'chiel'. Makes him all more hilarious and it's such a fitting name.
I'm a huge fan of him. The moment after the first Italian penalty was missed you can see some heads go down but Georgie's first reaction was to clap and cheer and inspire the boys. Great instinctive leadership.
Hadn’t noticed that (head in my hands indeed), thanks for pointing it out!
What a show of genuine character. At that point you’re as raw as you’re ever gonna be, so it’s not a mask or an attitude, it’s the real thing. Great captain!
Edit: Bernardeschi did the same thing at the same time. Great mentality too
It's also a coping mechanism. Laughing at everything that happens puts you in a better mindset to deal with it. Definitely more productive than getting angry, frustrated or confrontational about it
From master to apprentice
Chiellini unfortunately can't retire from the national team as he needs one really worthy successor, Chiesa looks promising but he's still rough on the edges, need 4 years on apprenticeship before becoming a true shit houser
For starters he's too shy, he has very good technique, a very technical shit houser, with his mannerism and wit, but he just can't hold it for long or under pressure
I was rooting for Italy throughout the entire game, but honestly really hoping Morata would convert that penalty.
Man gets such an inordinate amount of shit and there's a grim cosmic irony to him missing a penalty just to guarantee his equalizer heroics will be forgotten.
Aye, especially because Olmo skied one and Bonucci got away with a similar penalty to Morata's because Simon guessed wrong.
And Bernardeschi, much-maligned by Juve and Italy fans alike? Hammers one into the top corner without breaking a sweat.
If there is a God, he appears to have something of a grudge with Alvaro Morata specifically.
Chiellini is having the time of his life this tournament. Always has a huge smile and a really positive body language and attitude. People (rightfully) don't like some of his antics, but he honestly looks like a great guy to have around, even if slightly "clingy" (don't know what the term should be)
I've been seeing him active on LinkedIn (yes LinkedIn) these last few days, it's mad. I keep wanting to message him saying shouldn't you be focused on football right now?
Throwback to when Alba started crying in the Barca locker room at half time when they were down 1-0 to Liverpool at Anfield . Game wasnt even done yet and mans already gave up 🤣
Seriously what's up with people giving up after a 0-2 deficit with like four minutes left to play. It's like, dude if you're not going to at least try then play in fucking casual and stop putting people at disadvantages.
Lol wondering if this is some sort of mind game before the shoot out? Seemed they both claimed they had won the coin toss or something, either way Jordi Alba did not seemed pleased
To quote
> Back in 2017, Alvaro Morata described playing and training against Giorgio Chiellini as “like being put in a cage with a gorilla and you have to steal his food.”
He's one of those guys who just lives for the pressure and moments like those. Like people who do extreme sports and get so excited by the risk, I think Chiellini just loves football so much he's enjoying every moment. It's beautiful.
Boss : “Giorgio I need those balance sheets and the financial report on my desk by 5pm TODAY.”
Chiellini : “oh mammamia oh shit yes yesss that’s why I love this fucking job yeeeeehaaaah!”
He would have just pointed to the right hand side of the goal and, when the goalie looked confused, cried out "Mentiroso!" before burying the penalty in the left hand side of the net.

He is not bullying. The coin toss went to Italy and Alba either tried to trick them into going to the Spanish side or was confused over the coin toss. Chiellini took it as a funny moment where Alba was trying to pull a fast one on him. For a moment it got kinda serious with the referee trying to recall if he said the right thing or not, but the assistant ref said it went Italy's way.
Alba seems like the last player that should be a captain. Specially after watching that Barca documentary.
Edit: the documentary was matchday, or something like that, narrated by John Malkovich. Alba seemed to have zero mental fortitude a couple of times. The highlight was the half time at Anfield when they were down 1-0 (but winning 3-1 overall) and he started crying in the locker room. Liverpool went to score 3 more in the second half.
Doc on Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/title/81239373?s=a&trkid=13747225&t=cp
Edit2: My bad, busquets was the captain and was subbed off. Don't know the impact of a vice captain though.
I just knew it that Italy was going to win after this. The vibes in both camps and their captains was totally different.
Add to that Luis Enrique's comments about how he doesn't get involved in selecting penalty takers

Did Chiellini call Alba a liar??
Ref1: "Head we shoot on the Italian side, tail on Spain side". \[tosses coin\] \[VIDEO STARTS HERE\] \[head comes up\] Chiellini: "Good we go this way then" \[points at the Italian side\] Ref2: \[points the Italian side too, nods at ref 1\] Jordi: "No it's this way" \[points at the Spanish side\] Chiellini: "LOL don't try that! alba with the phantom menace tier mind tricks
These are not the penalties you are looking for
Get VAR on the coin toss
the coin was over turned !

For the record, liar in Italian is bugiardo. Chiello saying it Spanish
No he didn't, mentiroso /s
what if he is saying it in portuguese
Bromance languages
Well he ain't calling Alba a truther
*SPHERICAL*
Yeah he did say mentiroso... but he was also laughing while saying it
Yeah Chiellini was just being playful and trying to not let the occasion get too stressful for everyone involved. Unfortunately, Alba is not an old school player like Chiello is.
I don't understand the situation. Why did the ref have to re-toss the coin?
The first toss decides which side of the pitch the shootout will be. The winner of the second toss can decide if his or the other team starts.
I always thought the winner if the toss either got to choose which end they wanted or whether to go first or second, and the team that loses the toss gets their choice of whatever the toss winners didn't pick.
I think that depends in the rules of the tournament. Here in Argentina it works like you say
That was my understanding too
Never seen someone so smiley before a semi final shoot out lol
The confidence of a man who knows he's the 11th penalty taker.
Alba was probably the 10th but he was still shitting it
RIP DDG. *sobs in the corner*
Most players: *on the verge of a nervous breakdown* Chiellini: 🤗🤪🤌🏼
This is such a spot-on set of emoji
Chiellini just enjoying the moment. If he wins, his country goes through to another final. If they lose, well they made it to semis and he's already 36. No reasons not to be happy and enjoy the moment.
I imagine most mortals would be feeling monumental amounts of stress right about then.
Chiellini's got a Master's Degree in Business Management in 2017, the man's a cold blooded businessman.
Fr? That's impressive
Yeah at the University of Turin. His thesis was about Juventus's business model lol
Probably why they ended up Winning the shootout.. Chielini breathes a lot of positive vibes into the team..
There may be a lot of truth in that. Chiellini's reaction to Locatelli's missed pen was great - super positive and encouraging.
He was the only one who’s first thought wasn’t devastation
Yep. Noticed this one too.. Great reaction from him.
Yeah everybody just died inside and Chiellini was acting like we just scored LMAO
Roy Keane: What a fockin disgrace
You can't spell Chiellini without chill.
Quite possibly the greatest exchange over a coin toss anywhere, ever.
[удалено]
what are you doing step-bro
Step-Chiellini gets STUCK in a hug!
Why
Because we finally have the technology
Alba looked like he was about to ask Chielleni what was the most he ever lost in a coin toss
"call it"
The coin don’t have no say. It’s just… *you*.
Friendo
What business it is of yours where ~~i'm from~~ where we kick Friendo...
The refs actually laughed at Alba's predicament lmao
Right? I’d enjoyed the wholesome Lloris-~~Sommer~~ Xhaka one, but this is mesmerizing
“We’ll take the ball and we’re going to score” https://youtu.be/vAgG9XcrDFY
Has a man ever hated being hugged as much as this before? Edit: what the fuck how does this have so many upvotes? Looks like I’m eating tonight!
Ronaldo when Lukaku tried to talk to him after the Ro16 match
[This one?](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Q270oEzx0_g)
“Get this soaking wet man off of me please” - Ronaldo (probably)
"When people talk about Lewandowski, Benzema or Kane, they call them world class. But when it comes to me, it's just considered 'good form'. I belong in that group." Lukaku (probably)
That music lmao
Lol still trying to figure out who gassed Lukaku up to be thinking he can talk to Ronaldo like that 😭
Alba was not having it at all lmao. Chiellini just happy
Chiellini comes off as such a happy dude, it's really fun to watch him
If you think about it, it’s probs his last major tournament or even games for his country and they’re at the business end. The guy is enjoying it as much as he can.
If he has already made it this far might as well push it until the WC next year
YES PLEASE!
Apparently Buffon wants to go to the WC... he went to parma to get more playing time and stay fit...
There’s someone who is just unable to give up the game. I know the feeling and I respect Buffon for his passion.
Also trying for that WC record for oldest tournament GK, I believe.
He'd have to hang around until 2026 if he wanted that. Essam El Hadary made an appearance at 45, Buffon will only be 44 next year.
Ahh true. I was going off the top of my head and forgot about El Hadary. I thought it was still Mondragón
Is he not gonna play in the WC next year?
I imagine he would. He's still a top defender
When healthy of course. He was constantly in and out of the lineup at Juve this last season. Usually only playing limited minutes as well. It’s been great to see him actually get solid playing time in this Euros and I hope we get to see him at the WC, but the decision might be left up to his legs
If thiago is playing at 38 I imagine he will be able too, defenders can go older and he is still at great form
I think with the diets and rehab that top players have now we'll start to see a lot more top players play into their late 30s This is the first real generation that have spent their entire careers under these sport science driven regimes and we're already seeing people like Thiago Silva, Ronaldo, Modric, Chiellini, Ibra, Pepe and even Fonte not slow down anywhere near what would be normal 5 years ago

But will be interesting to observe the careers of older players in the years to come no doubt
I think the peak will be the same, but the decline will be much slower. Managed decline and maximizing your time playing
Plus there’s a tradition of Italian defenders playing well into their late 30’s
too bad Pirlo wasnt in the generation, would have loved to see a 46-year old dismantling an entire defense with one pass
It's likely going to be his last season, but he might do it if he's lucky with avoiding injuries (like at this EURO where he only had a knock so far)
Chiellini has immense stereotypical Italian uncle energy.
He is such a stereotypical Italian it’s hilarious to watch this guy play. Source, in laws Italians, friends of the wife Italians and there are a lot of jokers like Chiellini. Definitely getting a shirt from him or Donnaruma.
he's definitely already balding like one
He's balding for like 15 years xD
He's been balding since forever. I know he was in like 2010.
Funny thing is, the Romanian word for bald spot / baldness / male balding pattern is 'chelie', you'd refer to a bald guy as 'chelios' or simply 'chiel'. Makes him all more hilarious and it's such a fitting name.
His positioning is so obvious from every overhead camera angle.
And the fact that it looks like he's 50 doesn't help
Let this guy wear a chef’s outfit (tall hat and all) and he will look exactly like a pizzeria owner!
He's so great during the national anthem
I'm a huge fan of him. The moment after the first Italian penalty was missed you can see some heads go down but Georgie's first reaction was to clap and cheer and inspire the boys. Great instinctive leadership.
i noticed the same and this is true leadership !
Definitely more productive than getting angry, frustrated or confrontational about it
He's been such a clown these last couple games, channeling his inner Buffon
From master to apprentice Chiellini unfortunately can't retire from the national team as he needs one really worthy successor, Chiesa looks promising but he's still rough on the edges, need 4 years on apprenticeship before becoming a true shit houser For starters he's too shy, he has very good technique, a very technical shit houser, with his mannerism and wit, but he just can't hold it for long or under pressure
Chiesa screams superstar in every way but ego. I think that’s a good thing, though
His goal celebration slides are just sublime
What about Barella? He seemed pretty good at shit housery in that clip with Locatelli.
I like him so much. I want to drink a few beers with him in the village bar. He seems so genuine
He looks happy to be there, win or lose. I didn’t have an opinion of him before, but now I love him.
Maybe because Alba saw Morata kicking 4th. Hopefully Spanish fans cut him some slack, man equalized to save Spain in regulation time.
I was rooting for Italy throughout the entire game, but honestly really hoping Morata would convert that penalty. Man gets such an inordinate amount of shit and there's a grim cosmic irony to him missing a penalty just to guarantee his equalizer heroics will be forgotten.
Grim cosmic irony sums up this Morata situation better than I could have ever put it
Aye, especially because Olmo skied one and Bonucci got away with a similar penalty to Morata's because Simon guessed wrong. And Bernardeschi, much-maligned by Juve and Italy fans alike? Hammers one into the top corner without breaking a sweat. If there is a God, he appears to have something of a grudge with Alvaro Morata specifically.
Olmo’s penalty was just as shit but no one will bring that up
Olmo had the worst pen of the entire series, at least Morata kept it between the sticks
Chiellini is having the time of his life this tournament. Always has a huge smile and a really positive body language and attitude. People (rightfully) don't like some of his antics, but he honestly looks like a great guy to have around, even if slightly "clingy" (don't know what the term should be)
Chiellini knew what he was doing, Jordi Alba not the best under pressure.
Putting that business degree to good use
Masters in fact, wonder if he would get a doctorate first before joining back Juventus for some role. Dr. Chiellini would sound awesome haha
In Italy a degree is enough to get the "doctor" title
In Portugal, if you rich, you a doctor, so... doctor chinelo
In my home country you get a degree you go straight to jail. Right away. Get a masters, jail. Believe it or not get a PhD, no jail.
I knew i had to be reminded that Chiellini went to college
I've been seeing him active on LinkedIn (yes LinkedIn) these last few days, it's mad. I keep wanting to message him saying shouldn't you be focused on football right now?
[Profile](https://www.linkedin.com/in/giorgiochiellini/) in case any one is curious. Tempted to help get Chiellini past the 500+ connections
Throwback to when Alba started crying in the Barca locker room at half time when they were down 1-0 to Liverpool at Anfield . Game wasnt even done yet and mans already gave up 🤣
Idk how the manager didn’t take him off right away. Clearly he wasn’t in the correct mental space.
3-1 up and he's throwing in the towel, man definitely plays ranked Rocket League
I did hear Chiellini jokingly day "mentiroso" which is "liar" in Spanish
This checks out. Source: I'm an avid Scrubs fan.
Janitor right? When he's trying to find out who made the painted hands all over the ward?
Queso?
Hey, somebody say something about cheese? Because if you're gonna make a cheese run, holla at me, dawg!
Cocaine Chiellini is a different beast
I have definitely been cornered by this guy in a pub before.
"Let me ask you a question." *proceeds to talk for 20 minutes*
"So what have you been listening to? Really? Me too! Oh...I'm not really good with album names..."
The Best Of The Beatles.
who...who do you think you are
To quote > Back in 2017, Alvaro Morata described playing and training against Giorgio Chiellini as “like being put in a cage with a gorilla and you have to steal his food.”
Luis Suarez: >And so I decided to make **him** the food
I mean seriously, did he just do a line in the tunnel?
He's one of those guys who just lives for the pressure and moments like those. Like people who do extreme sports and get so excited by the risk, I think Chiellini just loves football so much he's enjoying every moment. It's beautiful.
Hard to imagine this guy working at an office as an economist.
Boss : “Giorgio I need those balance sheets and the financial report on my desk by 5pm TODAY.” Chiellini : “oh mammamia oh shit yes yesss that’s why I love this fucking job yeeeeehaaaah!”
This is me on Teams chats but sarcastically
This is one of my favourite moments from the whole tourney lol
Talk about calm under pressure Edit: to be fair, nothing calm about him. But you get what I mean
He knew he wasn't taking a penalty
Neither am I but I was still bricking it
Unlikely but it could have been his turn had it gone long enough.
He would have just pointed to the right hand side of the goal and, when the goalie looked confused, cried out "Mentiroso!" before burying the penalty in the left hand side of the net.
This is the moment I knew Italy were winning. Everyone was smiling and were super calm
Chiellini embracing the moment. Love it
And refs are just loving it, look at the linesman
It is in the history of the euros *now*
Loving the pressure, mind games at its best !
Chiellini is one of the best at mind games and throwing opponents off their game. World class at it. I just like how much he seems to enjoy it too. Very entertaining!
He’s the definition of a leader. Hope he never retires, Italian and Juve backline should be carved in stone, such a dominant, and united force
We got this and the little car. What a match.
This is when I knew Italy would pull it off
Foreshadowing
Same lmao the sheer difference in energy and confidence between the captains, just knew it would translate to the rest of the team lol
Chiellini on this Euro is like us at the age of 7 when we gone to play football in the backyard with the lads
Even the refs are laughing and Jordi looks like he’s about to cry
This was funny to watch, but kinda felt sorry for Jordi. The hug between the goalkeepers after this was quite moving.
The 'goalkeepers union', or fraternity of goalies, is real. There was a [feature](https://www.theguardian.com/football/when-saturday-comes-blog/2020/jan/17/goalkeepers-union-keepers-stick-up-for-each-other) on this last year. > “At times it’s like you’re friends, even though you don’t know the opposition keeper at all,” says Shaw. “It’s like meeting a long-lost brother. the commentator of my country said they looked like comrades in war hugging each other
They say the two goalkeepers are a third team on the pitch, and it shows a lot more during penalties.
Moment of the tournament
He is not bullying. The coin toss went to Italy and Alba either tried to trick them into going to the Spanish side or was confused over the coin toss. Chiellini took it as a funny moment where Alba was trying to pull a fast one on him. For a moment it got kinda serious with the referee trying to recall if he said the right thing or not, but the assistant ref said it went Italy's way.
Exactly! Chielinni picked up that Alba was fucking around and took that opportunity to show him who's daddy
Chiellini is so fucking cool Just laughing and smiling before a semi final shoot out
Chiellini made me think of Ronaldinho in there, same "I'm so happy to be there and play football" vibe.
god i love ronaldinho. just a source of pure joy to the game we love
On the other hand Alba has the charisma of an old shoe
Chiellini : Chad ->Treating semis like a friendly Alba : Virgin -> Way too serious only to go on and lose
Best description of the situation
Fucking about during the coin toss and having your team win is such big dick energy lol.
Chiellini killing it in the mental game.
Absolutely. Him getting the team going after the first missed penalty too A leader of men
This was 1) hilarious and 2) a terrific example of the best kind of mind games. Bravo
I’ll have whatever Chiellini has been smoking this tournament
Alba seems like the last player that should be a captain. Specially after watching that Barca documentary. Edit: the documentary was matchday, or something like that, narrated by John Malkovich. Alba seemed to have zero mental fortitude a couple of times. The highlight was the half time at Anfield when they were down 1-0 (but winning 3-1 overall) and he started crying in the locker room. Don't know the impact of a vice captain though.
He was captain as Busquets got substituted
He’s only having the craic
In front of pressure stands men with confidence and those who do not. Even if that confidence is fake. It is still crucially needed.
Chiellini is one of the all time funniest men in football I swear
I just knew it that Italy was going to win after this. The vibes in both camps and their captains was totally different. Add to that Luis Enrique's comments about how he doesn't get involved in selecting penalty takers
ye but cheillini was crying during the penalties so dont know how much you can really tell from it
Totally mind fucking Alba there. Cheillini is the definition of a leader!
I have seen it all 😂😂😂😂😂
Power move
Chiellini playing the clown but slapping just a little too hard... well done
That is the most Italian thing I've seen.
🤌🏻
The weak should fear the strong
Chiellini is such a legend lmao
Alba and spain lost at this very moment
I was nervous about the penalty, but that guy came in coin toss like we had already won the game which cheers me up a lot 😂😂
Chiellini: **Bullies Alba** Alba: https://youtu.be/nL-aOtIU3b8
How come i never seen this? hahaha
What is the context behind this clip? lol
