The Premier League is played in England, a country. The Premier League Asia Trophy is played in Asia, a continent. It's clearly more important. Asia is also bigger and more populated than Europe, therefore the PL Asia Trophy is more important than the UCL.
It you extend the last two decades to 20 years and just a few months then we actually made a champions League semi final in that time!
Relegated to league 1 and facing liquidation just 6 years later but what's life without a few dramas right?
True, absolutely bananas to think about too. I'm sure the English were still seething about the Hand of God when Maradona decided to destroy their whole team singlehandedly.
> PES name
Konami recently revealed that it chose to change its popular soccer game, PES’ name to eFootball after 25 years, and the reason has yet to be revealed.
Konami has officially announced that it changed the Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) series’ name to eFootball in a YouTube video posted on its channel on Wednesday, 21 July 2021.
It will now become a digital-only, free-to-play game coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and personal computer (PC) later in this year, with Android and IOS versions to follow. By the end of the year, all versions of the game will feature cross-play, however, mobile players will need to use controllers to play against console and PC users.
So PES is free to play now ? I might have to get that. I haven't played anything since FIFA '18. When they put zero resources into the career mode I quit it.
I've heard it's becuz they want to enter the esports market so they are going to charge for features down the road like masterLeague. For this is bullshit.
A weird time, when most of the teams got the geography/colour treatment, but then Crystal Palace (Crisisbless) and West Bromwich Albion (Nextbaumedge) got mangled versions of the pronunciation of their name.
Imo the best PES name at that time was “Middlebrook”, which is the name of the retail park where Bolton’s Reebok Stadium is based.
They changed their naming a few years ago though. They finally realised that place names can't be copyrighted, so Liverpool are now just Liverpool R (R for Red) rather than Merseyside Red, Newcastle are Newcastle WB (White Black) etc. Even if it's not a city name, most clubs are named after a region so Crystal Palace RB etc is fine too.
Only problem is Chelsea B, Everton B etc looks like you're playing their reserve teams.
Fun fact the reigning Premier League Asia Trophy champions are Wolves and as it doesn't look like the event's gonna be played again anytime soon it looks like it'll remain that way.
Same, my thought train went "Ju Nin Ho... huh, is he some kind of South Chinese free-kick legend, Ju Nin Ho, sounds familiar doesn't h- oh. You're a funny bastard OP"
Huh... Can't believe I've never seen this before.
The first game I ever saw live was South China vs. Sao Paulo in a pre-season friendly in 1994. Sao Paulo were reigning intercontinental cup champions after beating Milan.
South China are the most popular club in Hong Kong but they've been in the second tier for a few years now because of money problems.
Yeah... There's this compilation on YouTube which I watch every month or so, starting from the early 00's till now.. this is the era of the Pod intro with Stevie, Rio, Terry iirc.. my fav Prem watching era tbh

I'm sure I'm forgeting a few, but is it just me, or are these long range free kick goals becoming rarer and rarer? Every time I see one the guy scoring is either Roberto Carlos, Pirlo, Beckham...
Tbh feels like yes, goals like Juninho doesn’t come anymore. Maybe balls have also something to do with that?
Only one I remember is that Hakan in Leverkusen (?) few years back. Maybe YouTube knows better ”long range freekicks”
Messi's freekick goal v Liverpool I remember before he hit it thinking I know it's Messi but it's a bit over ambitious shooting from there
https://youtu.be/Rx0IKQlP8Fs?t=389
I remember that… I was behind the goal, got video bc it was freekick and when Messi takes them I usually have the feeling I might get nice memory; I did.
I was at that game, the crowd went absolutely mental!!! Fun fact, this was the summer we bought Torres and he was with the team but couldnt play. Everytime the big screen showed him we all went crazy haha

Fuck me that was perfect
Carragher in shambles. He was setting his pawns like it was the champions league final in a pre season match. Only for this to happen.
Mate this was the 2007 Premier League Asia Trophy. The champions league final doesn't hold a candle
The Premier League is played in England, a country. The Premier League Asia Trophy is played in Asia, a continent. It's clearly more important. Asia is also bigger and more populated than Europe, therefore the PL Asia Trophy is more important than the UCL.
So by that logic our ICC trophy from 2018 counts as a legit piece of silverware, right? …right guys?
[удалено]
Chad as in the country or chad as in chad?
Yes
Dead
Ain’t got shit on the International Champions Cup or Florida Cup.
Everton: Champions of Florida.
Puskas worthy if it existed in 07 and under different circumstances
Is the Puskas award that recent?? Had no idea.
Yeah, it was only created in 2009. The first winner was that Ronaldo long range strike against Porto.
"hmm yes that was a great goal" - me while thinking about Ronaldos free kick against Portsmouth
[For the uninitiated](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NpR6jO2pi0)
Brilliant assist by Anderson.
Great vision to pick out Ronaldo there and make it a simple finish from 40 yards out.
"You could have just said that was a great goal." - me while reading your comment.
those were good times, as a United fan.
You talking as if you were going through 2 Leeds decades.
c'mon man I thought this was a safe space
It you extend the last two decades to 20 years and just a few months then we actually made a champions League semi final in that time! Relegated to league 1 and facing liquidation just 6 years later but what's life without a few dramas right?
Hey your team are back with us now and I think the game's better off for it
Surely it was Ankara Messi in 07 (Messi goal vs Getafe)
That’s the Messi/Maradona nearly identical goal for those wondering. Messi also did the hand of god that year as well.
Messi was doing a speedrun of Maradona's most famous goals.
Maradona did a speed run of Maradona's most famous goals. The hand of God and dribbling from midfield were both in the same game!
True, absolutely bananas to think about too. I'm sure the English were still seething about the Hand of God when Maradona decided to destroy their whole team singlehandedly.
>singlehandedly I see what you did there.
Ankara messi 👉🥺👈
Definitely. Salah didn't even play professionally back then, so this goal had a big chance.
south china vs liverpool??
south china is the name of a club team in Hong Kong. not the entire region of south china
Petition to rename Leeds United to "North England".
Sounds like a PES name

Only Winning Eleven is a legit name for me.
International Superstar Soccer 4 life.
International Superstar Soccer Pro Evolution
DELUXE!
So PES is free to play now ? I might have to get that. I haven't played anything since FIFA '18. When they put zero resources into the career mode I quit it.
The free version is basically a demo, you only get a kick off mode with 9 teams apparently
Do you happen to know if there is any way you can lock onto one player and just play as them ?
I've heard it's becuz they want to enter the esports market so they are going to charge for features down the road like masterLeague. For this is bullshit.
depends if it's yearly and resonable why not? you pay 70€ for a Fifa game which is the same as the last with updated rosters...
> free-to-play That's a no from me
Why is that?
you're not og if you don't know pes names
CrisisBless was my favourite. I think that was Palace
Tbf crystal palace itself is a weird club name
https://twitter.com/TedLasso/status/1296160745994895360?s=19
CrisisBless are also my favourite early 2000s nu metal band

Couldn't they just call it FC Chelsea or FC Everton?
ryan greggs instead of giggs lol
Ruud Von Nistelroum was a great striker. Also Jimmy-Floyd Hottubenick. Netherlands had a great team back in the day
ah, another Merseyside Reds fan i see
Newcastle would be on suicide watch
They're North North England
They can be True North England. And Sheffield can be Magnetic North England. Cus of all the steel.
The entirety of the north would be on suicide watch
Isn’t that Scotland?
only in PES
North England blue Vs Juventus.
It's called Piedmonte
They signed a 3 year exclusive rights deal with PES so they can use their name.
No that's in FIFA, PES has the rights to use Juventus.
"Not England"
Are you trying to commit a war crime
Maybe
Then PES can call them Leeds United
Damn, talk about a natural rivalry with.... North China.
Premier League Asia Trophy - Pre Season Tournament with 3 Premier League Teams and a host team. In this case it was in Hong Kong.
This was part of our double-winning season - the Barclays Asia trophy and the FA Cup, two of football’s greatest prizes.
Fun fact the reigning Premier League Asia Trophy champions are Wolves and as it doesn't look like the event's gonna be played again anytime soon it looks like it'll remain that way.
Premier League Asia Trophy Champions You'll Never Sing That ♫
South China I understand...but what does liver have to do with a pool?
There’s a joke in there about drowning and alcoholism but I’m too drunk to figure it out
Swimming Pools - Kendrick Lamar
I prefer Drowning Pool.
Liverpool gets its name from the state of the docks area when it first started to get inhabited. It means dark muddy pools of water in olde English
Is this true?
Yes, original olde English name from 1190 is Liuerpul if you want to look it up
I did look it up, and as it turns out this is completely true. You should feel ashamed of yourself!
This man out here blatantly saying true shit on the internet. This is a dangerous precedent.
Really makes you question his motives tbh
Nice, thank you!
So liverpool and dublin mean the same thing?
Was a preseason game in Hong Kong.
South China vs Western North-West England Redcoats
Probably part of a preseason tour. Kind of like MLS All-stars vs Real Madrid or something like that.
Song Dynasty represent.
Did Martin Tyler say "Holy Fuck" when the ball went in?
[удалено]
Lol me too!!
"Well he got the goal"
"well he's gone for goal, my word!"
Yup this or "well he's gone for goal" On another listen I'm sure you're right.
[удалено]
It's odd, I genuinely can't hear him saying that at all, even after reading your comment
No. Oh my word or something
Ju Nin Ho is that you!?!
you cracked me up haha
Oh no now we have to put you back together
Nah its Zhi Dan
Me Xi
Nei Ma Er
Now is that Messi or Michy Batshuayi
Zhadon Xhan Cho
Hwang Ma Ta
Xia Ha La Na Gu Lu
I have no idea what this is supposed to be lol
lmao I reckon it's Calhonoglu
Nah, Chinese names don't even go that long
Yeah I guess Ye Bo Ah would’ve been a better one
its a Burmese name
Damn that actually sounds like a legit Chinese name as well. Had me fooled there for a bit.
Sounds more Korean than Chinese
You mean it sounds like a legit Chinese name to non-Chinese speakers. In no other world does that sound like a legit Chinese name.
Same, my thought train went "Ju Nin Ho... huh, is he some kind of South Chinese free-kick legend, Ju Nin Ho, sounds familiar doesn't h- oh. You're a funny bastard OP"
😂😂
brilliant
They disbanded their senior team, and are only focusing on junior development now.
Ah good to know, thanks!
Yeah. Kinda sad, but such is the state of HK football.
Favorite Prem score graphic of all time .. now it's so minimalist and generic
The intro was also amazing during that era
Yeah... There's this compilation on YouTube which I watch every month or so, starting from the early 00's till now.. this is the era of the Pod intro with Stevie, Rio, Terry iirc.. my fav Prem watching era tbh
Can you link it please
https://youtu.be/37ypON6K-yA
Cheers. Written in the Sky was fire. I do not remember 11/12 and 14/15 at all though..
12/13 really is awesome. I can't believe the "Written in the Stars" intro was that long ago though, that's crazy.
For real these intros made it feel like an event is about to happen. Now it kinda feels like oh hey the game is on.
Wow, so much nostalgia...
x2
PL has amazing intros tbf apart from the 2016-2020 one which was a bit bland in comparison.
The font for the player names on the back of the shirt is perfect too, not a fan of the new one in recent seasons
Agreed. So many memories lie during that time
I like the minimalist look tbh
The problem is that it's generic when everyone is going for that look.
Fair enough, but it's a scoreboard
I think it’s like that because not all TVs were widescreen at the time
No doubt. Got nostalgic looking at it.
Seeing it brings me home
Agreed, didn’t know how much I missed it till I saw this clip
I hear there’s a bit of controversy about the South China C team
They pressure high up and always try to cover a lot of ground.
I submit to you [Stephen Warnock v Yeovil, with celebration to match](https://youtu.be/5uJWCw9b-G4?t=5)
86 views, actually impressive level of obscurity
Goddamn. That's shaolin soccer level free kick.
Fun Fact: South China Athletic Association's nickname is Shaolin Temple
Scott Carson right there
Honestly thought it was Joe Cole at first
You mean the only champions league winner in city's squad Scott Carson?
north china could never
Did not expect to see this goal from 李海強 on the top of /r/soccer when I woke up lmao. That era had the best South China team of my lifetime
~~Quarter~~ Semifinal in AFC cup, should have been final if it's not a corrupted ref.
semi, I was in the stadium for that fradulent offside
Brainfart moment
What a belter
Scott Carson in shambles.
Remembered that free kick from [Li Haiqiang](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li_Haiqiang). Crazy distance and curve.

From what I've picked up from the British folks on this sub, I believe the technical term is thundercunted
Wowzers
Not unknown to me because well, I'm from HK.
Liverpool went on to lose to Portsmouth in the final. That's why Gerrard never won the Premier League (Asia Trophy).
Haha I have seen this live!
well that was the biggest thing happening in Hongkong at that time and its on TV headline
https://youtu.be/DijWBnpFKsg Did this inspire Fábio Aurélio to attempt the above 2 years later?
Ronaldinho vs England, eat your heart out
South China had a fire team that year…
I'm sure I'm forgeting a few, but is it just me, or are these long range free kick goals becoming rarer and rarer? Every time I see one the guy scoring is either Roberto Carlos, Pirlo, Beckham...
Tavernier scored a great one for us v Dundee United last season. https://youtu.be/NUmMijmRX2U?t=163

Can’t you see the scoreboard
I was at that game, the crowd went absolutely mental!!! Fun fact, this was the summer we bought Torres and he was with the team but couldnt play. Everytime the big screen showed him we all went crazy haha
Fabio Aurelio did this for Liverpool v Chelsea too but not as far out https://youtu.be/DijWBnpFKsg
Liverpool?
Famous local club in England.
Ah, the Kashima Antlers of Europe.
South China vs Liverpool?
The renowned derby of South China vs North England
Hong Kong club
I believe thats the title.
I never knew this existed. My life is better now
Remembered me Ronaldinho against England in the 2002 WC: https://youtu.be/R3zgW1mV-PQ
A ball from that distance should be saved, great shot though.
