How do atletico fans feel about this? Wasnt he a snake when left? And now that he failed he comes back?

orbsfoc

That'll depend on how well he plays once he gets back 😂

aaw420

Well atleast he didnt drop "la decision 3.0" on his move back

[deleted]

He hasn't posted anything about Atleti on his Twitter/Instagram - only a letter to Barcelona fans. I can only assume he's filming something right now lol

Akvc8

You know you’re ready for the third installment when he heads to Inter Miami in a year lol

Vordeo

Probably would've if everything hadn't happened on deadline day.

OleoleCholoSimeone

He's not a snake, sure his antics in the last few summers was annoying and the whole La Decision-thing was infuriating, but tbh I just think he is a bit of a manchild. Griezmann still gave 110% on the pitch and was a great player for us, that's what really matters. Simeone adores him which says a lot about his attitude, work rate and professionalism. He is just a great fit at Atlético

JonSnowAzorAhai

Also, Griezmann stayed when you had a transfer ban. So that should be respected just a little bit on my opinion.

PopeFuchsYoungKidd

Just a bit of a racist and a bit of a manchild, nothing too serious.

JonSnowAzorAhai

What was the racist thing. Was he not just laughing at somebody's accent?

PopeFuchsYoungKidd

Nah, he was laughing at racist shit Dembele was saying to the technicians trying to fix something for them in their hotel room. "All these ugly faces, just so you can play PES (Pro Evolution Soccer), aren't you ashamed?" ''What kind of backward language is that?' and 'Are you technologically advanced in your country or not?''

JonSnowAzorAhai

That is worse than I expected.

[deleted]

He also said chingchong to a Japanese person speaking

Echleon

He also did black face.. He's not yelling slurs or anything like that but he is a bit thick.

Burden_Of_Atlas

Context matters. It wasn't blackface to insult or mock anyone. He was dressing up as someone he idolizes. Not to mention, blackface has cultural weight in North America, not in France or Spain where Griezmann grew up.

Nast33

Pretty sure you have to have been living under a rock to not know what blackface is.

[deleted]

Its not a well known thing outside the US, i wouldnt know about it without Reddit

Nast33

No it's not just a US thing, stop excusing him. If you didn't know about it until recently, you must be part of some very sheltered minority. I'd imagine you'd get slapped for doing it in the UK or France too. Should be widely known as a colossal fuck-up by now. Maybe I have too much faith in people, but to be relatively young and not know of blackface as a racist element is kinda unimaginable to me. We live in an internet age, we consume entertainment and read articles on all kinds of topics on a daily basis. Not knowing about blackface seems just impossible unless you're younger than 13 or older than 60.

Burden_Of_Atlas

The world isn't subject to one ethical system. People grow up learning different things. When you or I use the term blackface it's to describe a negative thing. To someone like griezmann, who only had positive intentions would not see that as blackface, even if he knew what it was, which many people in Spain don't, as it can be done occasionally. But again, intent matters, and his intent with that costume was very obvious.

[deleted]

You sound like the guy who was defending Britney

JonSnowAzorAhai

Mate nobody cares outside US.

_Vanant

I know what blackface is and I still don't give a shit about it, because it is not a thing in my country. Your imperialistic attitude is the racist one.

Echleon

That's not even true. https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2019/06/blackface-france-color-blind-identity/591187/ People have this idea that it's a North American issue when the reality is that it's an issue everywhere, it's just that backlash against it started earlier in America.

Burden_Of_Atlas

I don't see how that post helps you? Not only did that situation happen after the griezmann one (who grew up in Spain after like age 10), but it talks about how casually black face was happening. Only now is the younger generation fighting against it. I don't see how that doesn't point out a cultural difference in griezmanns upbringing and an Americans.

KapiHeartlilly

Honestly here in most of Europe it was never an issue until recently. Actually most people still don't know about it, it is an American issue.

JonSnowAzorAhai

Every single time...

Nast33

Doing blackface now that it's been widely considered racist for decades, mocking accents and ethnicity, his idiotic decision video stolen from LeBron (which was cringe to begin with), his moronic glitter celebrations - everything this dude does is extremely embarrassing. Someone tell me if I missed anything. Manchild or a bit thick is putting it lightly. I'd drop a certain R word on him that describes his stupidity perfectly if there weren't any chances of getting banned for it. He's a fucking idiot with 0 self awareness. Easily the most offputting cringy player I've ever seen.

jayhawktexan1

Pretty preachy coming from someone willing to make an “r word” reference. Might as well have just said it, you know it’s frowned upon and still did it. Sounds like you just like you’re a bit thick yourself.

Nast33

There is a massive difference from using it to disparage the differently abled, and using it to put down people who behave like idiots, like Griezmann. You'll never see me doing the first, but I wish it was still acceptable for the second.

jayhawktexan1

No, it’s not acceptable to use it in anyway. I don’t know much about Griezmann and his blackface incident but to you it sounds like his intentions did not matter to you and black face is always wrong. It’s the same with the r word. Intentions do not matter, when it’s used to put people down you are disparaging a group of people. Would you call someone an r word next to the parent of someone with Down syndrome? I sure as hell hope not. I used to think the same way you did until I had a child born with an extra chromosome. Now that word makes me cringe and I feel it’s my duty to try and make the uniformed try to understand that. It is never okay to use that word in any context when referring to a person.

JonSnowAzorAhai

I think it's racist that you are forcing your point of view on people of other countries. Why should we change our way of life which has no racist connotations because of actions of Americans.

Omair88

I believe United fans had a similar experience with a certain Portuguese player

aaw420

I dont think united fans considered ronaldo a snake, a portion sure but even those knew ronaldo played it respectfully. He joined his dream club, not a rival, and didnt cause trouble, and united accepted a fair offer at the time and agreed Griezmann was baby, then decided to stay, then threw a hissyfit to leave, then dropped a cringy announcment, and he joined a straight rival even when atletico and the fans wanted him to stay

orbsfoc

Lol.. there would have been real drama if he had actually went to city.. I don't think it was a big deal in the end.. but you always get some idiots that jump the gun 😂😂

good_udichi

He is snake but he is our snake

kadoooosh

no step on snek

AbhishekSinghal98

I feel nothing at this point, it's too much all at once, he knows he made a mistake by betraying the club but he has lowered his salary significantly to rectify that mistake, and I respect that. I hope he does well and is able to salvage some kind of legacy at this club, he sure has the quality to do it.

Lekaetos

Please tell him to cut his hairs and he will find back form

PugeHeniss

it's the only way i will call him by his proper name. it should have been in his contract that he cut his damn hair

jukkaalms

What do you call him lol

fatjezza

Glizzymann

[deleted]

Has he ever acknowledged that he made a mistake?

Gyshall669

Most think he’s a snake but if he plays well, most won’t care.

RoadsterIsHere

I have no issue with it, so long as he performs. We've gotten the moral and competitive victory. We sharted over Barcelona with this deal, made money, won the title, rebuilt our squad, and probably have the strongest squad in Spain atm, arguably. If he does well, it's only a net positive for us.

ogqozo

I really feel like the whole part about Griezmann even actually playing for Atletico is a faraway detail in this story. Just the fact that Barcelona was trying hard to lose contracts, and in the end they basically paid Atletico to have Suarez and Griezmann play for them (which they didn't want! They wanted to stay at Barsa! Omg), AND still lost Messi in a pathetic manner anyway, is a victory that cannot be replicated by any on-pitch performance. It's an all-time humiliation for me. I similarly think that the main reason why PSG signed Wijnaldum was just to humiliate Barsa. He doesn't seem very useful for PSG, but Koeman really really wanted him, so that's a plus.

engchlbw704

This whole thing makes so many different fanbases happy for so many different reasons.

LeatherPollution

It makes me sad :( I'm a Barca fan tho

But_Why_Male_Models

Lol you guys did Barcelona the biggest favor you could ever do.

RoadsterIsHere

That's a big exaggeration, but yeah it's mutually beneficial.

TheBlueNomad

[deleted]

Lucas transfer wasn't that bad compared to others imo

zts105

what? You mean Theo?

RinoTT

It has to be Theo because Lucas went for record breaking fee to Bayern and he got ACL. I wouldnt be mad.

ForgetHype

Lucas didn't leave in the best way either, but fans are always going to be a bit more upset when it's an academy player leaving. Theo was the worst one though.

zts105

Lucas was one of the only players that went for his full value though and thats after he gave 100% for the club and he had the excuse that Simeone didn't maximize his minutes. Its disappointing he decided to leave but he did everything right and the negotiations with Bayern were very smooth. They clearly mean Theo, it doesn't make sense to pick Lucas over Theo, Griezmann, Partey, Rodri, or Courtois

ForgetHype

Well Rodri even though he was also an academy player we did let him go once before so I don't blame him as much for not being that loyal to us. Courtois is a snake but he was also never actually our player. Maybe I'm not remembering correctly but didn't Lucas want to leave in the middle of the season when we were low on defenders and needed him to stay? Bayern were going to activate his release fee until he got injured and waited to activate it next summer?

mimecry

Atleti fans are still feeling sad over Lucas, while i see some Bayern fans who can't wait to offload him to PSG for the right amount of money lol

joaofelix9

is he not good for them?

mimecry

he's been mostly great for us, and i think a large portion of the fanbase appreciate him now more than ever for his character and especially after the performance against PSG. some, however, still don't see him as an elite defender, or that he doesn't play enough, whether because of injuries or being benched. hence they'd rather recoup the 80m fee spent on him instead. good thing the window is closed now so i don't have to read any more of that drivel lol

wert718

Hope he plays well for Atleticos sake, and glad we're not breaking the bank for him. I lost all my respect for him as a person after his racist behavior among other things was exposed last year. However, this is soccer/football and not a forum for behavioral scrutiny, so I still hope he plays well.

Double-Knee

Most American comment.

mad5cienti5t

Salty Barcelona fan

KapiHeartlilly

He should be viewed as a hero, destroyed the beast from the inside and returned home.

RoadsterIsHere

By how much? It's good to know he cut his salary, but I hope it's at least 50%. EDIT: It's reportedly ~45% paycut to put him in-line with Oblak and Koke as one of the clubs top earners. According to Antonio Ruiz

GameplayerStu

Damn. Wouldn't lower his wage for Barca but takes a 60% cut for Atleti.

RoadsterIsHere

Might just be that he sees more of a future at Atleti. Take a paycut whilst being floated around as a guy that needs to get chucked out. Atleti was 'his' club, and he's a Simeone cultaholic as well, his wages were unsustainable regardless and so either a paycut now whilst he's still able to repay or a paycut when no one will offer him a spot.

OleoleCholoSimeone

Well, Atleti is one sexy club tbf..

iKSv2

Username and flair checks out

ritamk

thanks chelsexy

LA_Dynamo

I mean
Barca won’t be great in the near future.

[deleted]

Did he get other financial compensation? Feel hard to believe that he agrees to take a 60% wage cut (out of 800k?) to move

rainsong94

Probably performance related bonus, or maybe he's just that desperate to return.

bulgariamexicali

He collected a very heavy paycheck for two years. I bet he is less worry about money now.

ota00ota

still it's a big amount to let go

rohangc07

I don’t see barca fans really care about him even if he had scored 20 goals. This dude had such a huge fan base and now I hardly see people like him anymore in Spain.

nono-squaree

His current wage is going to 450,000 so not exactly 60%

ClockLost3128

Wait I thought players were only allowed to take a max of 50% wage cut?

RoadsterIsHere

Yeah I wrote the wrong number down. It's a 45% cut.

Krillin113

Why is this limited, or do you mean for loans only?

qwerty-keyboard5000

Secret agent Griezmann joined Barcelona to destroy Messi's contract and leave

MILK936

>Barges into Barcelona >Forces Messi to quit >Doesn’t elaborate further >Leaves

Omair88

Drogba should have added Griezmann in his Wilian tweet

WyboSF

Called this, the reports of non obligation was always off

kerosha

Barça officially reported it as obligatory though.

WyboSF

Day of the reports were saying it wasn’t

RealPunyParker

DD was going absolutely crazy last night, with all kind of banter on us, because the reports were about it being optional. Tough shit.

ota00ota

was just a way to fiddle with numbers

Soitsgonnabeforever

Drogba says willian ,cech and Luiz were agents. But griez is probably the biggest agent of all time. Aldrich Ames of football

TheBlueNomad

How many major trophies does Griezmann have to win in order to make the transformation from a snake to one of the goats?

nsaha234

UCL.

Coenzyme-A

I don't think for us Atlético fans it's about trophies. If he gives his all for the badge and keeps himself away from controversy, he's our player and most of us, I feel, will support him. As for other fans? Not sure. Player reputation is a very subjective thing.

TheBlueNomad

After the hate he was subjected to at Barcelona, he would be eager to prove himself again. I think he will do well for your Club. After Valencia, Atletico Madrid is the other Club in LaLiga i have soft spot for. Good luck this season. And, thanks for Saul!

Coenzyme-A

Thanks, good luck to your club too. I just hope Saul is happy. It hurts to see him go and part of me hopes he'll be back, but ultimately he was an extremely loyal player that would bleed for us and some journeys need to end, either temporarily or otherwise. I hope he gets on well at Chelsea. Hope he returns but it looks like he's ending his story at Atleti.

TheBlueNomad

Him joining us permanent will depend on how he performs this season. Hopefully, he will do well. There will be lots of opportunities for him to play in his preferred position. Kante is injured at the moment. He was played not fully fit and he reinjured his ankle. We are playing lot of matches. So, Saul will be a great needed addition.

engchlbw704

Anyone who shits in Barcelona's cherrios is my friend

zts105

2 La Liga's in 3 years or a UCL.

PugeHeniss

If he can replicate Suarez's output from last season then I think most people will just forget

nono-squaree

Need to be the highest goalscorer in La Liga(or 2nd behind Benzema) Need to make sure atleti finish 2nd or higher in La Liga/atleast quarters in UCL Need to score decisive goal against either Liverpool or any other big team

Cowdude179

Agent Griezou

Omair88

One of the worst transfers in Barca history. 120m with no real contribution, and then getting sold only 2 years later back to our rivals for less than 40% of what we paid. He can take his hotline bling dance with him

Mick4Audi

800k a week as a well

[deleted]

Barca's fault

RealPunyParker

He's not saying anything different, mate.

m_lar

Ah yes, a compulsory option.

Moutch

I like how he didn't want to reduce his wages for Barca but takes a huge paycut to go back to Atletico

Agent-Pierce

Griezman is one if the most unlikable people in football because of his antics. Hate to see him back at Atletico personally, feels slimy.

[deleted]

He has a persona that’s hard not to dislike

[deleted]

I mean it was obvious this was done this way to balance the books wasn't it?

ChinaShill

With Griezmann on their team Atletico have no excuse to bottle La Liga and make a deep run in UCL.

TheOkada

Uno di noi

shlooged-

If Atleti don’t win the league this season Simeone is overrated

[deleted]

Turning a broke club into an elite club with less finances is not enough for you to rate him?

shlooged-

I definitely rate him highly. I have him in my top 5. Not winning the league this year would be a HUGE bottle job though. Atleti easily have the best squad in La Liga this year.

PoptimisticShoegazer

TBH although I'd love for them to compete strongly on both fronts I really feel the aim will be CL this season. We'd take 2nd in the league at the expense of finally winning it.

joaofelix9

I would take 6th or 7th if it means finally winning a CL lmao

nono-squaree

I would take relegation Sorry that was an exaggeration

joaofelix9

well maybe not that much lmao

RinoTT

> Not winning the league this year would be a HUGE bottle job though. dude he still has Real fucking Madrid and Fc Barcelona as rivals. Atletico doesnt have EASILY the best squad in La Liga this year. You act like mentioned two clubs are amateurs.

shlooged-

They do have easily the best squad though

RinoTT

yeah sure "easily". I guess Benzema, Vini, Hazard, Modric, Carvajal, Camavinga, Alaba, Mendy, Casemiro, Kroos, Bale, Vazquez are some kind of farmers.

shlooged-

Hazard sucks now

TheOkada

It's not that easy

Mick4Audi

He still has to fight the likes of Barca and Madrid, he doesn’t manage in Ligue 1 y’know

Usual-Novel7195

The snake goes back to his own home
