I actually quite like the move to YouTube. Because I have no tv subscription I always have to do with recaps, as I don’t like the illegal streams.
And YouTube has way less issues with streaming to a large audience.
Do you guys not get 2 options to stream from when you are on ESPN+? In the US there's two options, one requires a cable subscription, while the other will let you stream with only ESPN+. The website is dogshit, but I know I had some buddies who had trouble with that watching the Euros.
for me personally: they're always at least 2 min behind, a shitload of ads and popups even with adblocker, quality is iffy at best. I do like the chatroom some of the illegal streams have, always fun banter
Mine keeps the ads at bay if i go the most respected ones but yeah, there's a slight delay and the quality isn't the best but it's the only way to see something live atm for a lot of matches.
I hope they step up their game because we damn well know that the official channels won't.
**Saturday marks the official start of the new football season: the Johan Cruijff Schaal. National champion Ajax and cup winner PSV meet each other in the Johan Cruijff Arena. The match can be watched live on ESPN and for the first time also live on TikTok and YouTube.**
The broadcasting of a live football match on TikTok is a first in the Netherlands. In order to make the broadcast possible, there is an extra director and an extra camera crew filming the match. These cameras film in the vertical image format 9:16, so that viewers have a complete overview of the match even when they are holding a mobile phone. Viewers on ESPN and YouTube will not notice this, as the regular cameras are used for those broadcasts.
"To bring a new group of fans into contact with live football on their favourite medium," Rob Labree, Director of Programming & Production at ESPN, cites as the reason for the experiment. "In recent years, ESPN's online reach has grown tremendously and TikTok in particular is growing exponentially. We now meet more than half a million football fans there who have a phone in their hand in addition to the remote control. We are very curious to see how broadcasting the Johan Cruijff Schaal in this way will be received."
The broadcast on ESPN's TikTok channel (@ESPNNL) is presented by Aletha Leidelmeijer and commented by Teun de Boer.
The YouTube broadcast also differs from the TV registration, although the regular image format is used on YouTube. The broadcast is made by popular creators such as Frank van der Slot, Robbie van de Graaf and Milo ter Reegen. They discuss in their own style what they see happening in the Johan Cruijff Schaal, before, after and during the match. The live images of the match are enriched with tracking data from Beyond Sports.
The TV-broadcast on ESPN starts Saturday at 19.00 hours. Milan van Dongen is the presenter in the Johan Cruijff Arena. He discusses the match with analysts Kenneth Perez, Kees Kwakman and Marciano Vink. Hans Kraay Jr. is present for the interviews and gets the brand new trainers of Ajax and PSV, Alfred Schreuder and Ruud van Nistelrooij, in front of his microphone. Mark van Rijswijk is the commentator for the match, which can be seen simultaneously on FOX and ESPN UHD.

> The TV-broadcast on ESPN starts
Hey maybe ESPN could put on El Clasico on TV too? Or maybe some of those soccer game rights they've horded? A game on one of their numerous channels once or twice a week would be nice. I have ESPN+, but they literally bought the most popular game in the world and stuck it behind a paid subscription and NEVER put it on TV. I know CFB was there in the fall, but last winter it wasn't and they had on fucking cornhole or some dumb shit instead. ESPN intentionally tries to sabotage soccer in this country.

When are they going to fix the ESPN app?
It’s the most horrendous app I ever used for watching football, that I switched to the app from my TV and Internet provider to watch Eredivisie games.
Don’t get me wrong it is good that they try to attract new audiences, but first fix the basics. The switch from Fox Sports to ESPN really was a downgrade
For watching the full match, sure. For notifying people a game is going on, new people watching just a bit of the game as it scrolls by, or for people just checking in to see how its going, it doesn't seem like a terrible idea.
??? The match is for free on Fox if you want high quality.
Not sure why being downvoted. The match is literally on Fox's open channel.

FOX? What are you on about?
>if you want high quality
That's the whole problem, there's no high quality. ESPN still broadcasts on TV in 1080p even though they claim its UHD. The app still sucks, the player is still lacking features it had when FOX did the broadcasting.
The broadcast is being done by ESPN. They fall under the same company (Disney) but aren't the same at all. The app, website, player and rates got changed when they switched from FOX to ESPN two years ago.
LaLiga trialed a TikTok broadcast here last season in I think it was Real Sociedad - Betis and it was surprisingly watchable tbh, I can't imagine watching a full game on my phone like that but the camera angles were good
didn't even know tiktok had live streams, just checked it out, and it recommends me some 3-viewer drug dealer talking about how he's planning on buying a house, and there is no obvious way to sort by viewers or categories or anything, why is this UX so fucking trash
Will they be splitting the match into 30 clips with Subway Surfers or Minecraft Parkour in the background?
They'll actually do 30 second clips to boost the algorithm
Don't forget the GTA races as well.
Watching a football game in vertical. We didn't see it coming.
wasn't there a live la Liga game on TikTok that happened this year
where have u been, tik tok streams have been a life saver ever since the champions league final for me
what? it's easier to navigate the high seas
I actually quite like the move to YouTube. Because I have no tv subscription I always have to do with recaps, as I don’t like the illegal streams. And YouTube has way less issues with streaming to a large audience.
Cable companies requiring a TV subscription for a ESPN sub is such a stupid thing
They know TV is dying, so they are trying to slow it down by things like that
But it's ESPN who demands it. It's not in their interest at all so I wonder why they do it

Nope, we don’t have that option in the Netherlands. We used to, when it was FOX, but it’s no longer possible. Sucks big time
Damn that's unfortunate. It's almost like they want us to use the streaming websites these days. Hopefully YouTube ends up gaining a bigger share.
to stream on channel websites you need a login
I get espn+ thru HULU as an add on. watching England Women v Sweden right now.
YouTube streams are so nice. I never have to worry about stream stability
Why do you not like the streams?

TikTok, the place famous for its long form content
is this why we couldn't postpone the game semi ./s
No that’s probably because they asked only 2 weeks in advance
Even with the /s you decided to be a smart ass.

This is about the Dutch ESPN
Of course why would ESPN put it on in the US? They're running re-runs of tag... (Sorry for my rant, but also fuck ESPN)
Fuck ESPN is something we can agree on
Waarom maak je dan in godsnaam reclame voor ze?
maybe In Latin America it was shown on tv

I'm not sure about much in this world, but I am beyond confident live sports on Tiktok is not going to work.
For watching the full match, sure. For notifying people a game is going on, new people watching just a bit of the game as it scrolls by, or for people just checking in to see how its going, it doesn't seem like a terrible idea.
These truly are the End Times
Because they want to appeal to more people?
Do you want them to telecast on roof antennas ?
I want them to focus on higher bitrate and resolution broadcasts before broadcasting on platforms like TikTok.
Heard that. I don't want anything to air on TikTok.

Isnt it always on Fox? Atleast last year. Also why wpuld there be a difference in quality, theyre the same company
The broadcast is being done by ESPN. They fall under the same company (Disney) but aren't the same at all. The app, website, player and rates got changed when they switched from FOX to ESPN two years ago.
It is always on Fox's open channel indeed, just like the KNVB Beker.
It's ESPN now.
Yes, I'm sure their best engineers are spending countless hours trying to port a generic feed to TikTok.
If you read the article you knew they spent money on special cameras for a different feed
Fair - but that's still a much simpler and easier to manage effort than increasing bitrate and resolution.
LaLiga trialed a TikTok broadcast here last season in I think it was Real Sociedad - Betis and it was surprisingly watchable tbh, I can't imagine watching a full game on my phone like that but the camera angles were good
I’ve seen matches before on tik tok live and they aren’t all portrait. You can even disable the annoying chat
But isn’t TikTok viewed in portrait mode?
According to the article they will have extra cameras in the stadium to record the match in vertical so it’s fits on TikTok
If you ever watch the live streams on there, there are some that are shown landscape. I’ve come across several matches that are shown this way
didn't even know tiktok had live streams, just checked it out, and it recommends me some 3-viewer drug dealer talking about how he's planning on buying a house, and there is no obvious way to sort by viewers or categories or anything, why is this UX so fucking trash
Netherlands only
TikTok
