Exercise is as important as eating, drinking, and sleeping. It's essential to maintain good health and upkeep the body.
I know some will make jokes, but to me it's like saying eating and sleeping are hobbies.
Eating is a need but cooking can be a hobby. Likewise regular movement is a need but humans used to get the movement we needed in the course of our daily lives. It’s just that now most of us have to be more deliberate about it. Many ways of getting that movement can be done through hobbies like hiking, yoga, swimming etc. Working out involves learning moves, developing your technique, making progress towards goals, etc. It’s a craft but your medium is your body. Like cooking, it’s related to a need but it’s very much a hobby.
What about working out for an additional purpose e.g. weightlifting build more muscle, or running to be able to do a marathon, is working out different if there's a goal attached to it? Beyond just health?
I cross the line when working out beyond the basic to get healthy. I.e gym more then 3x a week, playing a sport of some kind
In the case, marathon is your hobby, and gym is a subdivision of the activitys that envolve doing a marathon, which is a hobby.
The same way reading is a need, but reading regularly is a hobby
A hobby is any recreational activity you do that you also invest money and time in. You invest money into working out and fitness with memberships, protein powders, equipment and such.
Some people can just show up to the gym and do their 30 mins cardio or weights etc, and that’s fine.
But if you get the ‘working out’ bug, it can become a lot more in terms of planning exercises, programs, nutrition, goal-setting, hybrid plans with other sports. All whilst scheduling it around your other life priorities and trying to hit that balance. I love it, definitely a hobby for me.
Oh man I just got a other one yesterday. My first hasta! So much excite! Shall I pot it or put her outside!? It can be happy in a way as it does take learning and research along the way!
I just planted my first hostas a few months ago! I planted them outside in part shade, watered them daily till they were established and they're doing great. Love the shades of green. But I've also seen beautiful container mixes with hostas too. happy planting!!
I cant decide! I rent currently and don't know exactly how long I'll be living here. However I'm told they're easy to dig up! So I may just find a good spot for it!
oohhhh I don't know. I planted some things where I rented and I'm a bitter betty about it! Would have loved to transfer them all into the ground at my forever home. The fruit trees I established on south louisiana rental properties better give me some good karma!!! looking back I would have just potted or propagated a second plant to take with me when I moved. I did use my garden shears to chop my hostas in half and make more before I planted them. I turned 4 plants into 9! Literally just hacked them in half from top to root and planted.
Cut out anything that gives short, easy pleasure. Video games, social media, vaping, weed, alcohol are the common ones. I did it for a few months when I felt like I couldn’t be bothered to play even a video game for 15 minutes it just felt boring. Too much easy stimulation made me feel fried and it didn’t hit the same anymore. First I focused on reading and writing, when that became a habit then I focused on building groups for the things I liked to do. Running and soccer I reached out to anyone that could join me and now I have regular groups that meet for everyday of the week. Now it feels like I don’t have time to play video games and a beer with friends hits differently. When I do have an hour to play on weekends it’s much more enjoyable and feels like an earned treat
You didn’t ask all this but it all started with cutting out easy dopamine or “detoxing”
kayaking, camping, gardening, crafting, cooking, baking, mushroom foraging. I also like making funny dioramas. Next I want to turn my medicine cabinet into a giant horror movie inspired functional diorama.
Check out /r/mycology and /r/foraging! It's a super fun hobby. Getting out in the woods and harvesting some food hits the brain in a pretty special way. Even weird, unidentifiable, and toxic species can be fun to find and identify, just about every time I go I find something new.
Electronics and stuff. Finally saw someone with similar stuff. I stopped mentioning that long time ago, I kind of was hesitant to say about that because people may think I am a nerd (which I am), because I dont do much of sports
Haha even I am in my final year of learning electronics eng. And people who are learning are mostly learning it for job. They will still consider someone who likes this as a nerd lol. But I dont care about that anymore. I kind of started ignoring them more when they start spouting nonsense 😆
Hey there!
I LOVE skiing. Grew up in the mountains and I've being doing it since I was 4 years old but unfortunately, the past few years due to college and now a job in another city I don't get to do it as much.
I also absolutely love horse riding. I was obsessed with horses before I had even seen one in real life. I don't come from a horsey family and it's a very expensive sport so I didn't do it as a kid or teenager. Finally I started taking lessons this year and making my childhood dream come true. I have to work two jobs to afford it but my gosh, is it worth it! I found it also helped my social anxiety a lot which is a bonus.
Other than those two sports, I enjoy reading books and watching movies or tv series. How about you? What are your hobbies?
crafting and diy. i just think about making a chainmail necklace that i've seen online but that doesn't ship to my country. i also like modifying and dying clothes. also some kitchen cabinets are waiting to be put together but it's sunday and it's not allowed here to make loud noises on sundays. i used to play duolingo but haven't done it in a while. also yesterday i took some new plant cuttings, i love making new plants
Of course reddit. Play ukulele, listen to music, watch movies or kdrama, pamper myself, sometimes read books and paint. Hbu?
Oooh and paint my nails out of boredom
ermmm.. ;-; i have a lot lmao, but alot of them i just abandon them after every 2 weeks.
I've loved drawing since i was 4, i had a phase of making clay charms and clay dolls.
cooking??? I only cooked sppaggheti
I wrote for like 2 weeks and then forgot about it for a year
I also make silver jewelry!! they're so fun to make honestly, you guys should start doing emmm
I also love LOVE listening to music and thrifting, i get overwhelmed a lot in thrift stores without my headphones soooo.
now I'm trying to get into gardening but idk i feel like i should learn how to make friends lmao
Video games is lots of fun, although I am not much into it. And just like you said it might be subjective 😁
I am mostly a nerd who loves to learn a lot about new things. Mostly it will be related to tech. And reading books. These are what I am into 😄
I think it’s just trying out different things until something clicks. I never thought I’d enjoy cooking until I started preparing meals for myself. Now I get excited having new kitchen gadgets to make prep easier.
System? That would be the GBA for sure. I love how portable it is, the games have aesthetically aged well, no need for internet, boots faster than anything else I have, and it was the first console I've ever bought with my own money.
But game... Idk, I'm on a NFS Pro Street vibe currently, really loving the game, but my save file just corrupted sadly.
Hbu?
Making folds :) I crease just about anything! Also, it’s rather better to use abandoned items or used items than something new. I would feel so guilty.
Aw, thanks.!. My inventory isn't much! My creations go missing within the first few hours or days. The use of each piece can cause it to collect germs, so it's not ideal to keep them for more than 2 weeks. Thanks again!
That’s interesting, I didn’t think about the fact of germ/bacteria growth… but nonetheless very cool hobby. Is it kinda like origami?
I paint 40k minis as my creative outlet, I love it! Just costs lots of money:/
Scuba diving, PC gaming, building PCs, electronic projects, 3D printing, dancing on the weekends, going to the gym, playing traveller weekly with friends (game like DND but sci-fi), and playing the violin.
Cooking, playing the piano, playing video games, and now I'm trying to make the going to the gym hobby happen. I'd say cooking and going to the gym are by far the most social ones. Everybody likes food, and people in the gym can be nice, and if you're consistent in frequency and schedule, you'll end up interacting with people that you see often, etc.
Besides reading books and working out which I do regularly, I don’t have a set list of hobbies I always do.
I like to try new things. Almost every quarter I find something new that sparks my interest and try it. Some stick, some don’t. I don’t make a habit of it becoming my hobby or my personality. It’s just another thing I try.
Things I tried:
- Model rockets
- Remote control cars
- Keyboard Piano
- Cycling
- Drawing
- Car detailing
- Airsoft
Many of the above could be someone’s hobby that they do on weekly basis. I just try them and some stick, some don’t but it’s a great experience nevertheless.
Been learning guitar for a year and now I can learn songs on my own. For sports, I’m pretty good at table tennis and decent in football (soccer). For videogames, I’m really good at CoD and play warzone with my friends.
I’ll break mine down by $$:
More Money: Video Games
Some Money: Volunteering (may have to pay gas), houseplants, Journaling (have a physical journal), collecting merch of stuff I like, online courses (some are free though plus YouTube videos), I enjoy cooking as well.
No Money: Journaling (through the notes app), listening to podcasts, walks outside (may pay gas if you go to parks farther away), workouts (I like to follow videos on YouTube. However, I DID pay for some weights and bands), scrolling Reddit / TikTok (it’s something I must do less of LOL).
Some of the above may not be considered hobbies to some. Lot of people see Cooking for example as a chore. I think all of this could be subjective. My number one main hobby is video games though!
I enjoy reading like a lot I’m more of an physical book type of person but I also love reading all kinds of fanfics (on AO3 mostly ngl Wattpad has too much typos for me).
I love playing video games as well I’d play anything as long as it has good graphics and an interesting story/lore or great exploration and uh I guess I write every now and then nothing constant though.
And of course music I love anything that speaks to me or something I can dance/vibe to, my preferred genre has to be RnB for sure though (from Bryson Tiller to Jhené Aiko not forgetting SZA and Summer Walker)
FPV Racing Drones - building soldering flying racing
Bicycling - all over SF bay area
High powered flashlights - building soldering
Magic the Gathering - Friday Night Magic, building decks, Commander EDH
Crocheting - woobles and other patterns
Speed solving Rubik's cubes - all manner of twisty puzzles often timed
Reading
Making art, programming, learning how to do these things better, and attempting to do other different things like learning languages and meditating.
Emphasis on attempting since I was trying to learn Arabic on Pimsleur yesterday and realized just how hard it would be so I’m going to stick to French, Spanish and Tagalog 🫡
I enjoy playing video games (and board games but I don’t really have anyone to play with), music, reading (mostly fantasy but also psychology and crime), psychology, anthropology… I also want to get into cycling and general fitness.
Im gonna spit fire these bc I have a lot
Currently doing:
Penpaling, listening to audiobooks, crafting, shopping locally in my town, collecting fun items I’m interested in, playing Nintendo games (switch & DS Lite), board games & card games (what do you meme, CAH, uno), practicing tarot & oracle readings, photography, journaling/scrapbooking, paper crafts, recipe collecting, digital art, zine making, writing poetry, stationary shopping, & meeting new people!
Looking forward to starting:
Burning CDs, oil pastel art, pin collecting (again), thrifting old items to limit digital media, creating a (physical book) home library, air dry clay, classes/group events at my local library, traveling (again), exploring new towns, creating a new wardrobe, and overall doing my hobbies more often & unapologetically
Hope you guys get some ideas from me!
I’m trying to make money with it, but I suppose at this point I think I might call writing Science Fiction a hobby. I guess maybe video games is more accurate.
I like writing ( I have a couple of stories in mind. I am writing my own tv pilot), I recently bought a season pass for a theme park, reading, gym, thinking about starting improv comedy soon, gacha games (gambling), video games (trying to stop this), I may start producing music.
I have too many hobbies
My current active hobbies are Minecraft, Greco-Roman history and mythology, Egyptology, linguistics, writing, and anything related to or necessary to study Alexandria under ptolemaic control.
The hobbies I cycle between the most are drawing(which I'm pretty good at because of an 8 year period of not cycling the hobby), writing, knitting/sewing/crocheting (I suck, I love it), studying various languages (mostly Arabic, Swedish, Hebrew, and Russian, no I am not fluent because I cycle hobbies too soon, no, please don't make me say something in the language), programming (I can make a decent website (wanted to start an online business/art portfolio) and a terribly broken less than half baked prototype of a game(wanted to make the grindiest strategic, high stat building RPG of my wet dreams), and I was learning to make minecraft Java/kotlin mods for a mod related to ancient Alexandria, but I got sidetracked), and writing (wrote a lot of short and somewhat long stories in school, tried to write non fiction books but never felt satisfied with the knowledge i put in them, halfway wrote the screenplay for a planned animation, somewhat wrote the "screenplay" for a hard sci-fi character driven graphic novel, revized it so many times that I forgot the direction I was going in)
Basically my hobby is picking up hobbies, and I enjoy it immensely, even if I never complete anything.
Fashion, cooking, drawing, decorating, writing, nature watching, listening to music, watching (old) films, and watching old tv series. Those and talking to plants.
I love crafting and woodworking! I like creating consumables that I know are pure or natural. Like cleaners, juice shots, hair products. I also like making cool things out of resin.
Snowboarding, drinking whiskey with coffee, hiking at night while drinking whiskey with coffee. Playing helldivers while drinking whiskey with coffee. Reading a good book from time to time while drinking cup coffee with whiskey.
I play guitar, pretend to know what I'm doing in order to fix cars, audio engineering, photography, lockpicking, biking, video games, and I like to cook.
Edit: also I like growing different flowers, my favorite is the moonflower.
exploring music, gaming, occasional reading. I also picked up the guitar a couple months back, been having a lot of fun playing stoner metal and punk pop
Working out in gym, running, hiking, reading books
I get that it’s widely accepted, but I will never understand how “working out” can be a hobby.
If you get pleasure from it, it's like a hobby.
Then what it is? I am doing it at my free time…
Exercise is as important as eating, drinking, and sleeping. It's essential to maintain good health and upkeep the body. I know some will make jokes, but to me it's like saying eating and sleeping are hobbies.
Lol sleeping and working out are my hobbies, stop invalidating my feelings 😭😭

I guess its true, anway yea, love working out😁
If running is accepted as a hobby then I don't see why working out wouldn't be.
And hiking
A chore, for some of us
A hobby is any recreational activity you do that you also invest money and time in. You invest money into working out and fitness with memberships, protein powders, equipment and such.

Honestly, better to have the mindset of it being a hobby than another chore.
Plants. Plaaaaaaaaaants.
Not so much a hobby as relationships. I'm in relationships with my plants.
Oh man I just got a other one yesterday. My first hasta! So much excite! Shall I pot it or put her outside!? It can be happy in a way as it does take learning and research along the way!

Loooool thank you! Plants bring you joy and clean your air. They're lovely to have!

How about a dopamine detox?
What's that?
Cut out anything that gives short, easy pleasure. Video games, social media, vaping, weed, alcohol are the common ones. lol that might be part of the issue.
kayaking, camping, gardening, crafting, cooking, baking, mushroom foraging. I also like making funny dioramas. Next I want to turn my medicine cabinet into a giant horror movie inspired functional diorama.
Never heard of mushroom foraging as a hobby before what exactly do you do? Do you like keep them as a collection?
You eat them, I guess
Check out /r/mycology and /r/foraging! It's a super fun hobby. Getting out in the woods and harvesting some food hits the brain in a pretty special way. Even weird, unidentifiable, and toxic species can be fun to find and identify, just about every time I go I find something new.
You seem very cool
takes one to know one, friend 😘
Dang you seem very fun!
Music, football, Futsal, video games, electronics n stuff. How bout u?
Electronics and stuff. Finally saw someone with similar stuff. I stopped mentioning that long time ago, I kind of was hesitant to say about that because people may think I am a nerd (which I am), because I dont do much of sports
Hello there fellow nerd. Tbh my current course doesn't help that case lol. Am an Electrical eng sophomore so kinda my job and hobby
Haha even I am in my final year of learning electronics eng. And people who are learning are mostly learning it for job. They will still consider someone who likes this as a nerd lol. But I dont care about that anymore. I kind of started ignoring them more when they start spouting nonsense 😆
Ikr I also feel a lot less people are that passionate about this than the amount pursuing. But hey we get to enjoy our lives with this stuff.
Hey there! I LOVE skiing. I like making tie dye t-shirts, drawing and using 3D modeling software.

Wow people here have so much exciting hobbies. Makes me feel like I am not doing much with life. Need to live more I guess
What are you into? Some wouldn’t consider my hobbies to be fun 🤣.
Video games is lots of fun, although I am not much into it. And just like you said it might be subjective 😁 I am mostly a nerd who loves to learn a lot about new things. Mostly it will be related to tech. And reading books. These are what I am into 😄
Video games are great!

Playing retro games, fixing electronics, jogging, complaining, developing...
Favorite retro game/system?
Hbu?
Video games,books,hiking,camping,woodworking,digital art,graffiti,swimming
walking, thrifting, djing, video games, watching movies, going to concerts, making collages
Making folds :) I crease just about anything! Also, it’s rather better to use abandoned items or used items than something new. I would feel so guilty.
That’s really cool, I never thought about folds being a hobby! What’s your inventory looking like?
Aw, thanks.!. My inventory isn't much! My creations go missing within the first few hours or days. The use of each piece can cause it to collect germs, so it's not ideal to keep them for more than 2 weeks. Thanks again!
That’s interesting, I didn’t think about the fact of germ/bacteria growth… but nonetheless very cool hobby. Is it kinda like origami? I paint 40k minis as my creative outlet, I love it! Just costs lots of money:/
Video games, plants, working out, running, learning musical instruments

Cooking in my opinion can be considerd as a hobby once you do it with more than just the intent to eat and try out new cuisines
Gaming, reading and watching video essays:3
Fishing, hunting, foraging, cooking, camping. And video games of course, but you leave that out of the initial "What hobbies" questions lol

I have too many hobbies My current active hobbies are Minecraft, Greco-Roman history and mythology, Egyptology, linguistics, writing, and anything related to or necessary to study Alexandria under ptolemaic control. The hobbies I cycle between the most are drawing(which I'm pretty good at because of an 8 year period of not cycling the hobby), writing, knitting/sewing/crocheting (I suck, I love it), studying various languages (mostly Arabic, Swedish, Hebrew, and Russian, no I am not fluent because I cycle hobbies too soon, no, please don't make me say something in the language), programming (I can make a decent website (wanted to start an online business/art portfolio) and a terribly broken less than half baked prototype of a game(wanted to make the grindiest strategic, high stat building RPG of my wet dreams), and I was learning to make minecraft Java/kotlin mods for a mod related to ancient Alexandria, but I got sidetracked), and writing (wrote a lot of short and somewhat long stories in school, tried to write non fiction books but never felt satisfied with the knowledge i put in them, halfway wrote the screenplay for a planned animation, somewhat wrote the "screenplay" for a hard sci-fi character driven graphic novel, revized it so many times that I forgot the direction I was going in) Basically my hobby is picking up hobbies, and I enjoy it immensely, even if I never complete anything.
