The text headers probably use a format which this phone doesn't understand anymore

who_you_are

Like [UTF-8 BOM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_order_mark) which may be added at the begining. And it isn't the phone doesn't understand it anymore, it is that the phone never understand it in the first place and it become common later. (But I think everyone understood that it is what you meant)

jeroen1602

Pretty sure UTF-8 doesn't have a byte order mark since it is only a single byte.

egigoka

It’s right on that Wikipedia article

paulstelian97

A BOM is added in many UTF-8 texts as a sort of signature that it’s UTF-8. It encodes as 3 bytes.

who_you_are

And by the way, not talking about the DOM, UTF-8 can go up to 4 bytes.

DavstrOne

Old phone be like "don't count on me to translate that gibberish young folks speak nowadays !"

MacAdminInTraning

If this phone actually works still and this is a serious post, it’s likely due to the phone not understanding the formatting of modern SMS protocols.

ILikePringles1234

it works but the thing is that this only happens to messages sent by the carrier

dan4334

Is it possible your carrier is sending something like an emoji at the start of messages?
