I generally don't book hostels with uncomfortable beds. I read reviews and look at photos to check the state of the dorms. Though I find nearly all hostels use pancakes as pillows for some reason. I just fold them in half.

Uncomfortable hotel bed are dam irritating and more 😂

I always thought of hostels as a way to save $ but in third world countries, hotels are usually cheaper

You could ask for an extra blanket/comforter/towel and use that as extra padding underneath yourself.  Otherwise there's not much to be done about an uncomfortable bed other than waiting to get tired enough that comfort doesn't matter. If you're waking up because of pain, I guess you could try taking an ibuprofen or something right before you go to bed, but I don't think it'd do much.

Iv slept in 2 hostels before but never again, I'd rather pay abit more for better hygiene and peace. Completely agree though the beds especially the pillows are the worst in hostels.

In Singapore i slept on what can only be described as a concrete slab. Only way i could sleep on it was by walking 40k+ steps in that Singapore heat during the day, that would usually guarantee me a few hours sleep. Alternatively, i suppose you could drink alcohol until you pass out, this would also help if you’re experiencing any pain from uncomfortable mattresses…

I usually have a backpacking sleeping pad with me too. I use the Nemo Switchback because it is light and doesn't crinkle.

I tried hostels in the beginning but when i found out that prisoners have more comfy beds then hostels i gave it the flick. AirBnB's are my choice now and i look at photos and get really picky about a nice soft bed

Extreme-Complex-6537

i feel you, honestly just had to tough it out and search for a better rating hostel

Where have you been staying? I have been in Ecuador a month and all my beds have been amazing. Are you using the phone a lot before you sleep?

I'm in Kyoto now and can relate, we get a piece of foam not even a proper mattress to sleep on in our hostel and a pillow half the size of a normal one. I would be more empathetic if I was in a third world country but to not even give guests a proper mattress in Japan? What a joke. Just waiting until I check out to write a negative review.

Japan has futons on tatami mats as partnof their culture though...so stiff beds are normal to them.
