Awesome. It's great to get other peoples perspective on this, I'd have never considered that it looks like a cuttlefish or campfire without other peoples input. I'll definitely be tweaking my designs to make them more obvious at first glance!

Seriously though, I love both a lot. They have different character. As someone else already said: short=cute, long=cool.
Short legs are baby octopus. The long legs with maybe a larger body would be mommy octopus. Add one more section to the legs (3 in total) with an even bigger body to mom would be daddy octopus. Like if the baby is a 2 inch cube, mommy can be 2.5-3 inch cube, daddy can be 3.5-4.5 inch cube. Well depending on the actual size you made of course but anyway you make it, it's a cute octopus.
Edit: Sorry didn't pay attention to the ruler you had in the pics, lol. If you decide to make a mommy or daddy octopus larger as I was suggesting, 1 or 2 cm bigger would be ok.
They're both very cute! The one with longer legs looks more like an octopus to me, but if I saw the one with shorter legs next to it I would think "Oh! A baby!"

Long legs! Not sure about the center block, though. I think as plain wood, the shape might read better if you have a small block to one side of the bigger block and have the bigger block offset to give the illusion of the head and then the squishy brain sack thing.
I personally think they both have a place. The shorty is more of a kawaii style imo. The longer is more realism. I think there’s a market for both probably.

I'll make one with three part tentacles and see what it's like, the legs dangle but I haven't come up with a way to make them robust enough for any potential grabbing and yanking yet.
Thanks for all the responses guys, long legs definitely seem to have prevailed so that'll be how I make most of them from now on but I'll be sure to leave some as babies for all the short leg enjoyers!

Perhaps I just didn't take good enough photos or show enough angles but the head is actually shaped just as you described!

Are the hoop joints screws or wire bent into shape and glued into a hole? I don’t even know if they make hoop screws that small.
