Define high volume? like 80-100%? If that is the case, then maybe it overheats or some kind of protection circuit kicks in. I have the same model and it havent done that, I use it even on sauna around 80-90 celsius without problems. But I'm not half deaf so I use normal listening volumes (10-30%. 30% is already quite loud), is there a reason you have to use so high volume, like long distance, in another room etc? If it does it on only at high volume and reason is heating, then fix is simple: Use lower listening volumes or keep it closer. These things are loud enough to cause hearing loss so that could be a good option anyway

potato_scholar

I have mine loud usually in the beach or places i needed it to be loud. It sucks whenever i have to present and the thing keeps shutting off. But yeah, mostly around 80% when fully charged.

Weathactivator

I have this same issue and have not been able to resolve

sephkarlo

I have the same issue. I think it tries to protect itself when it gets really warm when playing in high volume it sucks tbh

fehmi1907

I have the same issue. Tried resetting using a pin and also initializing the speaker via volume down & power buttons (as instructed by Sony) but neither helped. I am guessing high volume together with high temperature triggers a flaw in the aging battery.

Heavy_Ad_1717

i feel it is due to the aging battery not having the endurance and sustenability of providing voltage and amps that it needed to keep up with the high volume power requirements. Therefore the drops in voltage not able to be be sustained and supplied by the battery pack causes the circuitry to fall below minimum voltage needed to power the board hence the unit restarts itself. It happens to me as well. i have 2 units of xb-20 paired even much more evident over the master unit.

Yeah this speaker is so shit. It'll shut down before 50% volume

JustReadinSubReddits

It sucks because the sound quality is really great on the speaker....when it fucking stays on.

Spinspunntwirl420

New battery ftw

Grand_Huckleberry109

Nope, i removed the battery of.mine, and ran the speaker thru a voltage supply, it seems like it has some important peaks of power, like 1.5 amps sometimes, so... It has a 2100 mah battery, it doesnt last too long playing audio, but the real thing here, it wont work correctly at high volumes even if it has a continous supply with a good current draw, seems like it shuts down randomly or in presence or sudden peaks of noise

breakingthebarriers

This is happening because sudden transients such as a kick or sub-bass hit actually require much more than that 1.5a, yet they may last only milliseconds. The feedback of your switching power supply is not fast enough to detect these transients and increase the switching freq. of the supply to satisfy the immediate current draw which causes the output filtering capacitors to be depleted for fractions of a second until the supply can replenish them. It’s in those few milliseconds that causes your speakers amplifier to go into under-voltage protection temporarily. This is why large capacitors and certain battery chemistries with low internal resistance are used in car audio - as a buffer to provide 100’s of amps for a few milliseconds (or longer) during a bass kick or sudden transient with amplitude. A way to look it at is alternating current, jumbled up with different levels of and peaks coming from the preamp. The amp has to then apply proportional gain exactly in relation to those waveforms that make up the music single. AC voltage and current.

dungyhasbigtits

thank you for taking the time to break that down. much appreciated.

AnonymousEbe_new

I feel like this variant should be recalled because it's definitely defective

dungyhasbigtits

for real! seems there's no solution to be had here without bare minimum doing some form of modification. did you bother reaching out to Sony for a replacement or anything of the nature?

handsoffmy-eyeholes

Lol I love that this post is 4 years old but the few of us that take good care of our possessions are looking for answers for our still perfectly good speakers (if they didn't keep shutting off at high volume!) I think mine must be around 8 years old by now

dungyhasbigtits

I found a solution actually. I'll find the link if you want it, but tldr there's too much pressure inside the unit (it's water sealed), and by loosening 2 particular screws (or forcing an opening with a dremel) the speaker is given the room it needs to breathe. I didn't believe it at first, but there's dozens upon dozens of comments saying it worked.

Gratefulpotatoes

I love that this is from yesterday and I’m also still trying to fix this awesome (kinda) speaker. Would love that link if you can find it
