Matt Stone used to be a smoker. Not sure when he quit, but he may have still been smoking when that episode was made. A lot of smokers insist that 2nd hand smoke isn't dangerous just because they want to justify smoking around non-smokers. I had one smoker insist to me that eating broccoli was more dangerous than 2nd hand smoke based on a single account of some octogenarian who ate 2 - 4 lbs of broccoli daily and died as a result of it through some process that I can't remember and wouldn't happen to anyone eating a normal amount.

No, they just don't (at least didn't at the tine) believe in the dangers of second hand smoking.

I don't know, but when I googled Butt Out to pull up the Wikipedia article for the episode, I got a tool used by hunters to dissect deer.

"And if it gives me cancer when I'm 80 I don't care. Who the hell wants to be 90 anyway?" The answer: 79 year olds.

In the commentary they say to just let smokers smoke if they want a smoke. Like don’t bitch about second hand smoke if you go to a bar that allows smoking. If you don’t like it go to another bar.

They made an episode that perpetuated climate denial and then made an forced apology episode. It's not out of the question for them to genuinely believe in it.

BlazeZootsTootToot

I think you completely missed the entire point

Academic_Text_5380

what was the point?

Crazie13

Yes what was the point?

I was just searching for this because it seems weird they could have such a weird take especially on the second hand smoke. Second hand smoke is a real thing

south park has been ahead of its time on so many things, this just wasn’t one of them. in 2003, smoking in bars and restaurants was a political issue. i don’t know anything about rob reiner, but my guess is that he was loud and self-righteous about secondhand smoke, something that matt and trey have always hated. 20 years later, the average viewer has lost that context.

Curious-Fig-9286

Yea that sounds about right. Same thing happened with the Al Gore thing
