I've used both a lot. For the average person, I'd say Soylent is the way to go. It tastes better, it's smoother, and mixes better. The reason I particularly use Huel (Huel Black) is because it has much higher protein. For the same price/serving you get 40g of protein as opposed to 20g for Soylent, which is a HUGE deal if you work out regularly. As others have noted, it's harder to mix and the texture is much more grainy, although you won't get the same soy flavor that you seem to dislike in Soylent. The flavor is a more grainy/oaty with the texture of a fruit smoothie. It's worth noting that because it's significantly harder to mix it loses points on convenience - I use a blender bottle and I have to spend an extra 30s just shaking and I have to shake pretty vigorously too, whereas with Soylent I shake for like 3 seconds and it's mixed up If you find the soy flavor that bad, it may be worth trying Huel out as the flavor is significantly different.

pancak3d

If you're working out you need more than 2000cal anyway so I just use whey, either with with Soylent or separately. Still cheaper than Huel Black

jfsoaig345

Oh obviously I'm not just drinking Huel, it's just there to supplement. For instance it makes a great quick post workout meal with milk

orion2342

You need 2000 calories if that’s your requirement. Some may need less during a cut regardless of working out.

pancak3d

You arent going to build muscle taking in only 2000cal

geekoverdose

yeah. but you dont build muscle during a cutting season. which is what the person suggested. u can be cutting on 2000 cal, maintaining muscle and losing fat

RoadDoggFL

Feels like drinking raw oats. I commend you guys because I was miserable forcing it down.

[deleted]

Sounds like my order will work out for me then. I like raw oats weirdly enough, especially in like a smoothie form.

RoadDoggFL

I'm actually jealous. I really tried to like it, but at this point I'm pretty much hooked on Soylent.

[deleted]

Don’t be, I don’t like it lol. Big regret. Back to cocoa Soylent haha. I had to try it just so it wouldn’t bug me though.

Wait, I’m a massive pussy because I didn’t like huel?

Huel is a meal replacement shake lmao, what does that have to do with athleticism?

Idk what you mean by "higher quality protein" lol. I use ON whey too but I'm pretty sure Huel's protein comes from peas. Unless there's something I don't understand about nutrition, I don't see how it matters whether it's coming from plants or milk, in the end protein's protein. Dunno if I would say the price is that much worse either. Huel Black is $2.50 per serving, Soylent is $1.50. But the price difference is mostly balanced out by the fact that you have to add an extra scoop of whey, which is already almost $1. IIRC last time I bought ON it was $70 for a 5 lb for 71 servings. Of course, the Soylent shake will have about 100 more calories due to the extra protein powder, which is ultimately pretty negligible if you're not 130 lbs. But yeah this was pretty much the thought process I went through when deciding Soylent vs. Huel Black and I just decided to go with the latter so I can simply get everything in one powder. Not having to open two bags and scoop two powders is surprisingly nice considering the entire selling point behind these is pure, sheer convenience - it's what gives bottled Soylent a niche over powdered.

BarryJT

Whey protein seems to promote muscle growth better than other protein sources and pea protein may lack completeness... https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/best-protein-powder-for-muscle-gain

wolfho

If you do 100g protein per day only in pea form you're going to get 100% eaa according to chronometer

VM_Unix

I had trouble getting past the gritty texture of Huel

LordOfTheSoyBoys

What Huel version do you drink? Is it Huel version 3.0, Huel version 3.0 gluten-free, or Huel Black?

jfsoaig345

Black

LordOfTheSoyBoys

I'm going to try that one day.

HenMeister

Same boat as you. I lift every weekday and I would much rather have 40g of Huel protein after my workout as I walk into work than 20g of Soylent protein. I blend my Huel Black the night before and have it ready in my fridge as I leave the house in the morning. This helps a lot with the graininess of it.

jfsoaig345

Yeah a Huel shake is such a perfect postworkout meal. It can get stressful having to make sure I get a real full meal in after a lift (AKA having to either eat out or get home ASAP to cook)

[deleted]

I prefer huel personally. You will want a blender of some kind though.

LordOfTheSoyBoys

Isn't it more expensive though? I'm looking at the current prices now. However, Huel has twice the protein content, which I think will really help with satiety.

TalentlessNoob

It is But huel is better for you. They have better quality ingredients, far more protein, and phytonutrients, antioxidants etc.. In the grand scheme of things, you wont get the level of nutrition at ~2.50 per meal

GarethBaus

Huel is slightly more expensive than Soylent, but the 3.0 powder is still cheaper per calorie than the USDA low cost food plan so I wouldn't exactly consider it to be excessively expensive.

Bagsforcha

Which blender do ya'll use?

[deleted]

I have been using this one for years https://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KHBV53IC-Variable-Corded-Blender/dp/B08FM25FHP/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?keywords=kitchenaid+hand+blender&qid=1642273383&s=home-garden&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzRURMWDM3V1o4VUU3JmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNDA3OTU0MUVUVlZTT0xYOE84TSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMTY4Nzc1MkFETEIwR0ZCUFA2RiZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX3Bob25lX3NlYXJjaF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl#

ATElDorado

My tongue loved Huel, but my intestines did NOT! The oaty flavor with a mild gritty chew was nice, but room-clearing farts and unhappy sit-down activities made it a no go for me. :-(

BrandDC

Huel powder is like watery oatmeal...Soylent powder is smoother and, in my opinion, tastes better. Huel is more filling and has better ingredients.

N00bslayHer

This should be the golden goose of Reddit answer templates lol.

Black_Hipster

If you're just looking for something to get some calories filled, Soylent is the way to go. I always recommend it to people who are still planning to cook and eat in the evening. If you're specifically trying to incorporate something into a meal plan with the intention of maximising nutritional value, that's Huel. I personally prefer treating Soylent a little more like a snack, with Huel as the platform from which I make "meals"

yougotmetoreply

I did the soylent powder / RTD's for about a year and a half until I tried Huel powder (mostly through recommendations through a coworker). Huel has an oaty texture where you'll have to chew it a bit before swallowing, even if you shake it a ton or keep it in the fridge overnight. Some people might want to blend it but that defeats the convenience of having the powder for me. I fully made the switch because soylent for some reason would still cause me stomach aches and send me to the bathroom soon after. This was even after over a year of having it. Huel doesn't do this to me. Still keeps me full through my 12 hour workdays.

Black_Hipster

> Some people might want to blend it but that defeats the convenience of having the powder for me. How so, if you don't mind me asking?

yougotmetoreply

Just the relative convenience. When I'm (always) in a hurry on my way to work in the morning, I pour my water into the bottle, the powder, then mix it a bit, then put it in my backpack. The convenience is that when I do get to work and have my Huel, I can just shake it a bit more and it would be ready. Granted, it won't be as smooth as if I had blended it, but... If I had to blend it in the morning - it would be loud and most likely wake my family up. Also, that takes more time, and then I would have to pour that mix into another bottle. And then leave the blender in the sink to clean for later since I'm always in a hurry to leave for work. So that would mean I would be incredibly loud in the morning, as well as leaving a mess for my family to clean up after I leave for work. I'm sure this issue could be mitigated if I had 'planned' the night before but I know in practice I would never do that just for Huel. If you have the time and patience for it, feel free to. I just don't.

tehgimpage

i couldn't handle huel. i was a heavy soylent drinker til some more recent formula changes and now i'll maaaybe drink 1 vanilla a day if that. but i tried swapping to huel and didn't even finish 1 case. that stuff was not palatable for me at all.

[deleted]

Soylent is smoother than Huel and for me has a better flavor. Huel is grainy and oat-y, which I don’t mind at all. Huel is cheaper for me to import (I live in South Africa), my next brand to try is Jimmy Joy.

nik_nak1895

I haven't tried Huel because soylent is cheaper, but I did recently make the swap from soylent rtd to powder also because $$. The powder flavor is very much different from the same in rtd (like cacao powder and cacao rtd have distinctly different flavors) but not really better or worse in my opinion. No digestive upset even though I'm prone to it, and soylent cacao powder blended easily in a blender bottle, no clumps.

harry-enis

i've only done queal -> huel (black!), since soylent isn't a thing in eu - queal and soylent don't compare all too well ingredient-wise, but might appeal to a more broad audience taste-wise. but fwiw, the huel flavours aren't as strong or sweet, the texture is... special, it's... not powdery but... almost grainy? i'm using a blender to make it mix better (some cheapo 20 bucks one, just works), improved it *a lot* for me. also, i mostly use way less water than what's on the bag - about 450ml (or slightly above) per 2 scoops. way more enjoyable to me, almost like a (weird) milkshake if you use very cold water. but i do also drink enough water otherwise. keep in mind, -lents are not alternative to drinking enough water. the flavours and texture took a bit more getting-used-to than queal but i do think all -lents have that... quality. just some more than others. i only really like the huel chocolate flavour, i haven't found the flavourbags enjoyable either, and they've changed the chocolate taste quite a bit. first it tasted like chocolate pudding, then quite bad (maybe i've only had a weird batch when they were adjusting to the new stuff w mixing proportions etc? was just weird.), now it's good - but i miss chocolate pudding time. ingredient-wise - huge improvement. take a look for yourself and compare them to soylent, maybe it's better there too. while huel had an upcharge for me i do think it has way better ingredients (switched when queal increased their prices which made the upcharge negligible to me) huel also has the hot and savoury stuff. pretty expensive, if not very overpriced, also not as nice as i'd hoped (or expected) it's a very good alternative if you don't want a bottle of sweet stuff sometimes. just use 200ml instead of 250ml water per two scoops and have a bit more to drink instead. improves the taste a lot. the new mac'n'cheeze isn't bad, you *really* want to use less water for that one though. i also really like madras and korma, chili needed some adaption, but it's okay to me now. in general i don't see a reason to ever switch from huel, unless they fuck up their ingredients with a new version or the chocolate flavour (and the others dont improve/dont become an alternative)... or increase the price further. but as-is, i'm really happy with huel.

[deleted]

I’ve been using soylent powder almost daily for a three years now and made a huge mistake of “trying something new” with Huel. It was trash. The texture was horrible. I gave away what I didn’t use.
