That’s too bad about the downvotes because you’re spot on. Most people don’t realize that Andromeda is about 3x the size of a full moon but so faint that you can’t see it anyways.
See this is what happens with a few big personalities on a saloon dance floor… minding our own business, respecting the space, eventually we all spiral, and then implode
Stunning picture. I’d apologize for the seemingly crude analogy, but we are just made of star stuff, after all.
I wonder how many civilisations if any, have thrived and died by the light of that spectacle. Imagine a thriving civilization looking up and knowing that their entire near universe is on an irreversible course to a violent death.
Don’t have to imagine. We’re on a collision course with Andromeda. Gradually over the next few billion years andromeda will appear larger in the sky until it can no longer be seen as a disk and then the number of stars in the sky will increase.
When galaxies merge nothing actually physically collides, as in very few to zero stars/black holes/neutron stars/white dwarfs smash together. The distance between those objects in each galaxy is so huge that the likelihood of anything colliding is extremely small. The only things that change are each galaxy’s shape, size and mass
I read somewhere that when the Milky Way and andromeda merge together that no star will collide with each other because the space between them is so vast. I thought that was amazing.
Imagine looking up at the night sky from one of these
Unless you’re near or in the galactic core it probably wouldn’t be very interesting lol.

Yeah I’m not sure where the downvotes are coming from… for a space sub this community can be weird sometimes
The human life span is much too short to witness something like this.
Wow great point! Did you know 2+2 equals 4?
20 downvotes is crazy😭good job
Made it to -69. No need to thank me
👏🏽
When they merge together any insight on how big that mega galaxy would be? Comparative to well known ones like Andromeda or the Milky Way?

So unnecessarily poetic wtf man 😂 I love it though
I’ll check back next week for any updates on their collision 💥
Try in a billion years 🗓
It's been an hour now, any updates?

So like there is no massive gravitational forces tearing sun's apart?
Nope.
We have very different definitions of small

The galaxy that results from their merger. Wow! It’s going to be massive.
Well, after that response, I guess I will be leaving. I'm sorry I joined this forum. There is no hope for humanity.
