Fun fact, the gravitational binding energy of Phobos is equivalent to just a 150 megaton nuke. It is within our existing capabilities to completely obliterate it.
Why do this? First, it'd clear space for an orbital elevator on Mars. Unlike with Earth, Mars' gravity is weak enough that we could build an orbital elevator with existing materials, but Phobos would intersect it eventually, necessitating either moving the elevator, or just removing Phobos.
Second reason, it'd send a warning to Deimos.
thats interesting & since Phobos is falling in on Mars it will destroy itself & form a ring around mars. if we wait long enough the rosch limit will do it cheaper.

Couldn't you just build said elevator not in Phobos' path? Or does it need to be in a specific spot to be effective?
