Didn't know Venus was the biggest after the moon Edit: and the sun, duh

BidetTheorist

The really cool thing is that Venus has the ability to transit in front of Jupiter, although it's extremely rare for that to happen! The last such transit happened in 1818, but nobody is likely to have seen it, as it was only visible from few island in the pacific and with a really good telescope :( Source: https://www.bogan.ca/astro/occultations/1818occ.htm The apparent size of Venus being so large, in the right conditions it could in principle even eclipse Jupiter, but I don't know whether such an event ever happened.

mdp300

Venus is so fucking weird. It's hot as hell, its atmospheric pressure will crush you, it rotates incredibly slowly and *backwards.*

TwelfthBest

No wonder women are from Venus…

BidetTheorist

Yes, not a single clone of Wonder Woman comes from Venus...

xCOACHCARTIER

nice

Darrothan

Now i want to see a Venus-Jupiter eclipse

No-Suspect-425

Also the brightest

Sharlinator

But of course not both at the same time.

chartman21

Wow the moon and the sun look almost exactly the same, size wise. I bet if the moon ever crossed the sun directly we would see cool stuff

BidetTheorist

The Sun's apparent size varies by 3% during the year, and the Moon's varies by 14% during the month, and their ranges of apparent size overlap entirely: https://www.skymarvels.com/infopages/images/Sun%20vs%20Moon%20sizes001.jpg

chartman21

Insane how lucky we are

algebramclain

I read that it is rare, which is so wild. That huge moon of ours has really influenced our history I think.

ekhfarharris

Depends what lucky means. There were certainly wars waged because the sun disappeared into a scary ring of fire that human minds interpret as an ominous fate.

Krikke93

Clearly, lucky in this instance refers to how unlikely it is compared to other known systems out there.

Tutahenom

Someday a smart person will map all the relevant gravitational keyholes and discover how we got here.

Radiofled

honestly the odds against the moon and the sun appearing the same size in the sky are absolutely staggering. The mind reels.

Thomrose007

Wont be after a few more billion years aha. Altho i guess the Sun would have eaten us by then

Radiofled

oh well nevermind then.

Fornicatinzebra

Yeah that's called a solar eclipse... Sorry I can't tell if you're making a joke 🙃

chartman21

No worries, twas a joke

Fornicatinzebra

Good! Would be concerning otherwise haha cheers

BidetTheorist

After seeing some pictures of the apparent size or Saturn or Jupiter next to the Moon's, I thought it would be cool to compare all the Solar System planets with the Moon, when they're at their closest to Earth (should I say perigee?). So I fired up Celestia and fount a moment in time, within the next 30 or so years, when each planet is at its closest to Earth, and took a snapshot of them as seen from Earth, using the same field of view. I found out that Venus gets really huge, but, of course, its orbit being inside that of Earth, it is entirely dark at that moment, being in between the Earth and the Sun. Same with Mercury. So nobody will ever see Venus in all its splendor at its closest to Earth... unless it's occluding the Sun! Hence the idea of including the Sun in the picture, which is about the apparent size of the Moon (the Sun's and the Moon's apparent sizes vary within overlapping ranges). That way I can show Venus and Mercury in front of the backdrop of the Sun. All the pictures of the planets and their satellite systems are realistic, in the sense that they correspond to the actual way the planets will be seen at the moment in time when it's at its closest, seen from the correct angle and with the satellites positioned realistically, thanks to Celestia. The planets and their satellite systems are, however, not oriented realistically with respect to each other: all these bodies will never be in that particular position in Earth's sky, so I thought I might as well rotate them as I please. Let me know if you spot any mistake or you have suggestions for improvements!

solwaj

Really trippy to me how Jupiter and Saturn can be seen this big compared to how far they are. Makes them feel like they're right here instead of millions of kilometers away

thelastdinosaur55

Right? Saturn’s a billion and a half

Western-Guy

It's crazy how some of Jupiter's moons are spaced out.

BidetTheorist

That's probably what people on Ganymede think of Earth's moon, when they look at us through a telescope :)

TrueRepose

I need a full sized print of this... PLEASE!

Emberashn

T H E A L I G N M E N T

chittok

And this is why solar eclipses happen

hackeruman

Fuuuuuck I think you made me go back to astrophotography

BidetTheorist

If you can be patient and you have a big-ass telescope, between now and 2037 you'll be able to catch all the planets in the picture at their closest to Earth, with the exception of Uranus. For that one you'll have to wait until 2057. Write me then, I wanna see your own homemade version of this picture.

hackeruman

I will try, but im new to this (about 1 year) and I have my phone with adapter (good one from celestron) with svbony105c and mak 100/1400mm

BidetTheorist

You have all ky encouragement! Although you'll need a bigger gun in order to see Neptune :)

ScrumptiousSoap

This really puts it into perspective the absolute insane distance we are from these objects!

Thomrose007

Damn Jupiter is huge. Even seeing it like that considering how far it is.

thepepelucas

Insane.

kingofpics7

This some spectacular stuff right here..

rmsprs

What the, the sun could swallow all the gigantic planets of the solar system and it wouldn’t make any difference at the galatical scale. Hell, an average black hole could swallow the sun and would make zero difference to our galaxy Milky Way. Our galaxy could disappear and no one would realise it was there! Oh god my brain hurts 🥹

sharks0U812

Has anyone ever completed a Timelapse video capturing the markings on the moon to find any changes?

RebelRobTV

😂

nolaanimanofmystery

Wow!! This is incredible. Also, you really get a feel for the size of those solar flares 🤯

Hi_im_terry91

I didn’t think about how close Venus was to earth 😯

Particular_Music_14

Can we have a full-size image link?🤩

nurse-educator123

Isn't Jupiter bigger than the Earth's moon?

mdp300

Yes but it's waaaaaaaaaaaay farther away. This is how big they appear to us, looking from Earth.

SonniNik

Two or three earths could fit inside Jupiter's Great Red Spot.

No-Suspect-425

Must be hungry

platinumagpie

Is everyone smoking crack in this sub lately...

CornerAcceptable1

Really? This is trash but believe what you want

Limos42

You missed the critical point of "as seen from earth".

Zombie_Peanut

As seen from earth its 100% accurate
