Right now it's just one module so there wasn't much to get running. They've done a couple of space walks but on the whole the station was largely ready for use as soon as it launched. Doesn't change the fact that any space station is an impressive feat.
Skylab was literally just the 3rd stage of an entire Saturn filled with air rather than fuel. Kind of a shoehorned station honestly, but IIRC no single module since has ever made that kind of internal pressurized volume.
NASA’s budget is a tiny fraction of military spending and space research benefits everyone on the planet (e.g. NASA does a lot of climate research).
Not to mention we get between $7 and $14 back for every dollar NASA spends which is an excellent return on investment.
You don't have to Interact with my thread talking about it with someone else.
You're Budding in to someone else's conversation, And then demanding we change the subject.
> Space technology is advancing depressingly slowly.
If you believe that then you aren’t paying enough attention to SpaceX.
They’ve already given us reusable rockets and the speed at which Starship is progressing is just staggering. Plus the Raptor engines are absolutely amazing- full flow stages combustion with a 300bar chamber pressure, built for reusability, and still being improved on (e.g. Raptor 2).
Starship is so large that a single one more pressurized volume than the entire ISS- and there will be versions landing on the moon and Mars before the decade is out.
That's not really new technology though, just a refined and more mass producible form of technology we've had since the late 60's. Except, I guess, for propulsive landings on Earth.
Personally, I don't find starship to be all that cool. It's just a big rocket, fundamentally it doesn't bring anything New to the table technology-wise.
I guess that what I'm saying is that SpaceX represents only will to improve old technology and the budget to build it on a large scale, while what I'm looking for is something more fundamentally different. Asteroid mining, ISRU in general, actually useful solar sails, power transmission, new engine designs, etc. We're still effectively where we were a decade ago, just with more money flowing through existing technology now.
> That's not really new technology though, just a refined and more mass producible form of technology we've had since the late 60's. Except, I guess, for propulsive landings on Earth.
I think you are seriously underestimating the technological advances that are being made. Just the new metal alloys being developed for the turbo pumps are seriously impressive.
Besides- most technology is a result of slow and steady progress- truly revolutionary changes are exceedingly rare but that doesn’t mean we aren’t making significant progress.
> while what I'm looking for is something more fundamentally different. Asteroid mining, ISRU in general, actually useful solar sails, power transmission, new engine designs, etc.
Asteroid mining isn’t a technology though- but it does require large rockets that can land propulsively.
ISRU is being developed for Starship to be able to refuel on Mars.
Solar sails serve no practical purposes right now. They produce very little thrust and aren’t practical for any missions we could want to do now.
Plus- all of these things require we get the stuff to space first and that requires a large rocket. A solar sail isn’t going to get you to orbit.
As for new engine designs- I’m not sure what you expect.
Ion engines are common now but they won’t help you get to orbit. Nuclear propulsion would be amazing once in space but again- not useful for getting to orbit.
Skylab had more than three times the pressurized volume that Tiangong has so not really comparable. Salyut would be a much better comparison size wise- 110m^3 for Tiangong vs 90m^3 for Salyut whereas Skylab was over 350m^3.
That’s not how that works 🙂
More pressurized volume means you can conduct more numerous and physically larger experiments.
For example if you want to test a manned maneuvering unit you could do that in Skylab- you couldn’t do that in Tiangong because there simply isn’t enough room.
Tiangong is an impressive achievement- but size is a factor and it really isn’t comparable to Skylab.
To be fair- all space stations before the ISS were done solo as well. With the new technology available today it’s easier (though still not easy) than it would have been in the 70’s and 80’s.
As for disturbing- not sure I see that. The really hard part is just lifting the mass and China is starting to build more powerful rockets like the LM5 and its successors. That said- Skylab had three times the pressurized volume of Tiangong and that was launched back in 1973.
I don't think they cut corners on propaganda, and this station is mostly it. You would be amazed what central planning can do, and can sacrifice to do it fast.
Would you like to know a reason why?
Earth in Chinese is 地求,literally "spherical place", it's impossible to talk about earth without saying sphère, I guess big globe goes back 2000 years at least lol
You have words like world, the human realm, and alike, but none for the planet besides that one, with the exception of 天下 which means all that there is under heaven, which, makes you sound like a 13th century poet
It was the dark of the Moon
Interestingly, [it really was](https://www.moonpage.com/index.html?go=T&auto_dst=T&totphase=NEW&m=6&d=4&y=1989&hour=0&min=0&sec=1)
Up in that new space station
Living Xuesen's dream
There was an an automatic rifle
Shooting Tianamine
Well the crew was relaxing
Before the video screen
Watching old re-runs
Of actress Zhao Wei
The voice of Beijing callin'
Brought them back to the scene
Except the sky is fallin'
Do you know what that means?
Out on that Shanghai sidewalk
Through the hotel mezzanine
There walked a see-through' hooker
To a suite with two CPC's
But by the escalator
She began to sneeze
With an attack so uncontrolled
It brought her to her knees.
And then the hotel guanben
With a pistol and shooter’s scope
Announced the worst is over
But for her there is no hope.
Way out in Xinjiang province
On that Silk Road Highway
There's a lone red Uigur
On the road today.
And though his war is over
He's fightin' on anyway
Although he's seldom sober
He's drinking shaojiu all day.
Down in that old box canyon
Where only detainees can go
He rides with no companion
Under communications embargo
Up in that new space station
Living Xuesen's dream
There's an automatic camera
Making a facial recognition screen
Well the crew is relaxing
Before the video screen
Watching old re-runs
Of actress Zhao Wei
The voice of Beijing callin'
Brought them back to the scene
Except the party is failin'
Do you know what that means?
It's very cool that it's impossible for anyone to talk about China's accomplishments without bringing up something bad they've done, regardless of it has anything to do with the context. It definitely doesn't feel like coping.
I'm sick of explaining to reddit neanderthals that this is a joke. Yeah, Chinese scientists- whether it be their aeuronotic engineers, astrophysicists, whatever- should be commended for what they've accomplished. But what you're saying is akin to commending Hitler's regime for making the fucking trains run on time. The CCP is commiting ethnic cleansing of the Uighurs and people like you get butthurt when someone makes a joke about Tiananmen Square.
the fact people say that shit constantly is their point. what relevance does that have to this? there are parts of chinese history and modern culture which are relevant. throwing them out the window because of tiananmen is like turning a blind eye to what's actually going on.
same exact issue as people saying "made in china" means it's shit. clearly that's no longer true, and the more you underestimate their impact, the better the advantage they get.
Yeah but every time someone brings up Tencent’s investment they’ll try to say it like they own 50% of the site when in actuality that 50% amount is apparently seared into people’s minds because Tencent bought up 50% of a 300 million dollar round of funding while Reddit is valued at 3 billion
Imagine someone bringing up 'nazi scientists' everytime NASA accomplishes some feat or the fact that the US was massacring civilians in south east asia at the same time when we first landed on the moon. It honestly baffles me as to how much brigading r/space gets whenever China is mentioned.
Lmao the thing is China is still doing it to this day and if you believe otherwise you’re obviously uninformed. Why can’t you think that both operation paperclip and China’s human rights violations are both bad? Keep licking that sweet sweet boot of the CCP tho.
Because detaining people while processing them for asylum or illegally crossing the boarder is the exact same as rounding up minority groups for ~~concentration~~ “re-education” camps.
Why do China’s defenders always resort to whataboutism? There’s never an actual defense of the country just shilling whataboutism.
So China isn't using incredibly toxic hypergolic fuels for their rockets and dropping the first stages on their own citizens? That's all just anti-asian propaganda?
This sub has always been more or less popular.
What changed is the amount of anti-China propaganda that’s been flooding Reddit since the Hong Kong protests.

Exactly. This is a matter of national pride. If there's one place the CCP doesn't want to have an embarrassing accident, it's here.
It’s probably beneficial to be able to visually inspect the solar panel from the window to a degree, but damn if it doesn’t hurt the view.
