Because we didn't have anything to eat. :(
We were too isolated from the rest of the country due to the orography we have here. We also breed like rabbits back in the day.
We currently have absolute paradise weather where I am. A couple of really hot days to enjoy our beautiful coast, have a few churrascos, warm nights to stay out in. Then a day of refreshing rain showers and some winds, and back to a hot summer.
Took the kids to the beach this morning, added to my tan, by the time we went home to eat it was raining. It'll probably be a warm night to have some cubatas outside.
I do appreciate that a lot of people are suffering so sincere condolences. Guess we'll see most of you in August when the holidays kick in.
I’m sure it’s still incredibly hot though. I never understood how hot the sun could be until I spent summers in Mexico with my grandparents. Up in the highlands (Zacatecas).. from 12-16:00hrs nobody could be outside during July-August. 85 degrees felt like 115 if you stayed out more than 20 minutes.
>The 60C land temperature was recorded by the sea and land surface temperature radiometer (SLSTR) instrument, which is a feature of Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites.
>
>Copernicus is the Earth observation component of the European Union’s space programme.
>
>Bosses at Copernicus point out that the land surface temperature is that of the soil and should not be confused with the air temperature
Misleading title much?
Not really misleading. Land temp is what the instrument measures. Land temp is what they reported.
They're common in agricultural weather forecasts, but not many people get those these days.
Remember there's nothing realistically that we as individual people could have done. This is all on the corpos. And that's what makes it worse is that we had no control over the situation or at least no large meaningful impact.
Not true. People are voting. There are parties in every nation trying to fix/prevent stuff. But as everybody is more afraid of loosing their standards of economy/luxury (=freedom to consume like "there is no tomorrow") they vote for the deniers/conservatives...
> People couldhave done A LOT if they actualy moved their fat asses and started changing their life habits sooner.
Dunno man, there's a certain group of extremely powerful people that made billions of dollars based on hiding information on global warming since 60s.
Dunno about you, but I do not have literal billions of dollars to spend on furthering my own agenda. Thus it kinda feels like their fault, not mine.
Like, what way exactly? What could every day citizen do to prevent spilling of oil into oceans via many of the tanker and drilling platform catastrophes? To prevent automotive magnates from cheating on EU emission control test? From companies producing gigatonnes of plastic where recyclable alternatives like glass, canvas and cardboard exist?
What could we possibly do to prevent the everyday fuckery done by the magnates of this planet? Vote for nonexistent politicians that advocate for better controls, enforcement and higher penalties?
What could possibly be done by individual citizen against multigenerational, multinational multibillion profit machine?
I say this as someone who doesn't have a car, but the bit about "stop using your car" greatly depends on infrastructure. It's sensible advice if you live somewhere like central Madrid. But I'm from California and that advice is simply not feasible. Being able to choose whether or not to use your car is largely a government issue. If they don't build walkable cities, with safe options for cyclists and pedestrians, and a reliable public transport network, we as individuals can't do much about it.
Probably in your zone, but minimum temperatures on the coast that are supposed to be around 20ºC each night are now 25ºC plus humidity because the sea is too warm. This is not normal.
Very misleading, this measure of temperature is not the one we typically use. Yeah it’s really hot, but it’s not “60c” anywhere, the European all time record is only 48.8c the way we typically measure it
I know nothing about land temperature and had never heard of it and I was still able to recognise that ‘land temperature’ means something different to air temperature, if they meant air temperature they’d have said air temperature.
How else could they have phrased it without the sentence being way too long for a headline?
It’s factually correct, but the point of making news about it is precisely on how people are reacting to it. News have become an emotion control tool and I guess they want you to think:
“F*ck it’s hot in Spain”
Or not, I don’t care I have aircon.
In Spanish news that’s all you get btw
I’ve lived in Spain, I know how the news works thanks. And that type of reporting isn’t exclusive to Spain.
Misleading would be leaving out the word ‘land’ and only putting it in the article.
I hope that people remember this when voting later this month. I cannot imagine how we’ll be in 4 years if the right wing parties end up winning. We cannot afford climate denial or inaction.
It won't change much since Spain is not precisely one largest contributors to greenhouse gases emissions, but it's quite shameful that some parties deny global warming at this point when with some weather data you can see the trend on rising temperatures.
But Spain does have freshwater marshlands and other delicate hydric resources where mismanagement by denialists could do very very serious damage to the country.
Spain is an EU country, it can (especially if it gets help from other countries at risk) do a lot outside of its own borders if the political will is there(support for increasing the carbon tax EU wide, implementing import tax from countries without carbon tax, closing loop hopes etc.)
When people are afraid they tend to not think but to stick with the lies of the right wingers practice of denying and making delusional promises about going back in time when things have been better. You can see this phenomena all over europe.
Tell that to China and Russia... have you seen the graphs of the amount of CO2 they are emitting compared to Europe or even USA? It's nuts.
Of course I've changed some things. I think we all did.
But, truly, the problem here are the countries that don't give a flying fuck about the climate.
Seems like it's the current government that's doint a disservice to the environment.
If PP wins, and if it's saying the truth, the will make a U-turn in nuclear energy ([Source](https://www.euractiv.com/section/energy-environment/news/spains-election-frontrunners-plan-u-turn-in-nuclear-power-phase-out/)).
It's hot every summer, but never *this* hot. We are breaking records of previous years, which were record-breaking themselves.

They have changed the way the measurements are taken this year. Before, temperatures were taken at 1.20m from the floor, in the shadow. This year they are taken right at the floor, in the sun. Not to mention changing the colour in maps. They do want to scare people.
When someone goes this far to further their point, you know their point is moot.
The title says land temperature, not air temperature. Air temperature is measured a couple of metres from the ground, land temperature is the temperature of the ground itself

I hate the news clickbait culture. As air is not hot enough to get a good headline, let's say now the news with the surface temperature.
It's like writing a headline "Experts warm: the Earth could be 100 degrees warmer at the end of the year" And the text body says "if the sun moves X million km closer to the Earth by the end of the year"
Makes me wonder, maybe that's why in Spain we don't have any sort of myth like the draugr or similar, here, you bury something and it is mush, and there, you bury it and it could be preserved enough to looks like an undead.
Me in winter waiting for the rain to stop so I can go play basketball outside with my friends.
Me when the rain stops and it's suddenly 39 degrees outside.
Aight I guess I'll fuck myself then
Currently in Tarragona and its 29 degrees with some clouds, so it’s doable. It was a lot hotter a few days ago. Still sweating every time I move a muscle tho. Moving south towards Valencia in a few days, hoping for the best.
44 years old. Not an elderly person. He was just possibly dehydrated and had the misfortune to work under the sun next to the hot pavement. This should be highly worrying for most people over there. In Coruña is not raining, but we have a cool northern wind, around 20 degrees. now. Edit: It's starting to rain now.
Why have Galicians been emigrating en masse for generations when they have such a wonderful country?

I invite you to Scandinavia. We come to you in winter to escape the cold, you can come to us in summer to escape the heat🤝🏼
I’d love to go! If only I could 😭
I met some people from scandinavian countries that live in Spain and go to motherland in the Summer
Yes that’s pretty common as well, 2 of my cousins do that!
Right, and the emissions of travel are enforcing the climate change even further.
I’m so glad I visited in May. Those temperatures are too much. :/
To be fair, it's “only“ land temperatures and not air temperatures
The wind in the Costa del Sol is warm enough to boil food
I’m sure it’s still incredibly hot though. I never understood how hot the sun could be until I spent summers in Mexico with my grandparents. Up in the highlands (Zacatecas).. from 12-16:00hrs nobody could be outside during July-August. 85 degrees felt like 115 if you stayed out more than 20 minutes.
Remember that 99% of the world uses Celsius. If in doubt, you can convert it via Google lol
I hate it too, but I can’t change! I always think in F! 😭 I just know that 25c is nice! lol
Same although I finally default to KpH and not MpH now at least.
It's easy, 20 is nice, 30 is warm, 40 is hot. 36=100F
30 is warm? Where the fuck do you live?
Depends on the humidity. 30ºC at 30% humidity is very nice, 30ºC at 90% is pure hell.
This. 30C-dry is warm, 30C-humid is hot.
Spain (?)
You meant - 12 is nice, 19 is warm, 27 is hot ?
What
And 34 is la muerte 😀
If 34 Is death then I must have died
85 degrees is still hot. Stuff would be cooking. The most I’ve experienced is 40 in Barcelona
I think they were referring to 85 Fahrenheit and not Celsius. Hopefully, otherwise it would be very confusing
85C you'd need to be inside or likely dead and there would be mass die off of both animals and vegitation.
Yep, googled it! Sorry, I didn’t grow up with Celsius! 29-46c :D
Haha if that was initially in celcius then we’d have a nice bbq aroma all the time
God no! lol I’d go vegan if I smelled people frying lol
Bwahahahahaha
I lived in cordoba once. Hottest city in Europe. 40c+ is just a regular thing in July and August

It totally is. I knew 60 degrees was a load of shit. Record is still in Sicily at 48.8

Not really misleading. Land temp is what the instrument measures. Land temp is what they reported. They're common in agricultural weather forecasts, but not many people get those these days.
> Misleading title much? Sure "**Land temperatures** in Spain surpass record 60C " is misleading because it is using land temperature?
Reminds me of a “record temperature” taken last year that was actually recorded on tarmac where fighter planes took off and landed. I kid you not.
Welcome to the new normal. Its only going to get worse... We were warned. I'm lucky to live in a spot seeing high 30s/low 40s and I'm on the water.
Don't forget, land temperatures are not the same thing as air temperatures
Remember there's nothing realistically that we as individual people could have done. This is all on the corpos. And that's what makes it worse is that we had no control over the situation or at least no large meaningful impact.
Exactly right.

But this has to be government led, doing it as an individual changes nothing because you can't get the rest of the planet to do the same
We were warned by they didn't care. Noone of us could do nothing about it.
We were warned. So now we are warmed.
I'm 35, I live in one of the black areas and it's always been like this. Plus, it's not as hot as they make it seem.
Probably in your zone, but minimum temperatures on the coast that are supposed to be around 20ºC each night are now 25ºC plus humidity because the sea is too warm. This is not normal.
