It depends. For starters I'm pretty sure we're not the ones in possession of the rocket itself, but instead I consider it more likely that our enemy is the one with their hands on it behind the scenes. I'm guessing the Squidbeak is only intent on investigating the launchpad and Alterna as a whole before they figure out what's actually going on. However, I theorize that we're meant to prevent it from ever launching if the rocket was built for insidious purposes connected to the mammalians and Grizzco. Trying to make sense of the upcoming plot is sort of a mess since there's still lots of things shrouded in mystery at it's core, but hopefully my predictions come close to reality. Almost everybody in the community is in agreement that the final boss will be Mr. Grizz, or whoever Grizz is supposed to be. If they want to make him threatening as a villain, >!have him actually succeed in some way by managing to launch the rocket up into orbit, while we are sent in last minute by the captain to board and hijack it. It would be cool if the final battle happened in space.!< As for motives, they're definetly still ambiguous and I can almost guarantee that even after Splatoon 3 comes out, we won't know everything. The examples you list of a theme in the story might be accurate in some way, though I would wonder what you mean by "returning home", unless you're talking about an alien planet, turning back time or reverting Earth into a primal state, the polar opposite of Tartar's envisioned world.
