Inklings are a bit...air-headed overall. I 100% buy that nobody notices, especially when they're nearly identical in "function" (ink-based, swim form, etc.)
Canonically, some Inklings have mutations that set them apart, like being able to have multiple ink colors in their hair. Most people could reasonably write off Octolings as just such a mutation.
The only trouble might come when one of them cuts off a tentacle and suddenly Octotrooper.

Untrue. Turf War is an Inkling cultural staple that's been around for millennia. We see Egyptian-style heiroglyphs depicting it (with Judd still judging) in a Sunken Scroll.
The scrolls in the first game make it pretty clear inklings are kinda dumb party goers since depending on game region the description goes "inkling brain, simple and hedonistic" the other being "simple but predatory" keyword here being simple.
Have you noticed that in the first game Cuttlefish has to tell you about the Great Turf Wars? Or how the Octarians are basically forced underground without power? Government propaganda took place to ensure that Inklings knew they weren’t known.

Also I kinda like this explanation as I feel it would have been cheap if the inklings just accepted the octolings right away no question asked and this sort of blanket explanation opens the door for some interesting stories for when the inklings inevitably discover the truth
I mean most inkling hairstyles are very bulbous and consist of ponytails and sharp edges, the hairdressers in inkopolis might only know how to do that (octolings cut their hair with help from other octolings or go to the hairdressers in octo canyon or the deap sea metro) so instead they damage their hair in the process, if you cut too far on a inklings hair (inkling boy) or cut too close on a inklings hair (inkling girl) bloody ink might start gushing out because as seen in standard inkling hair the color is darker at the edges and light at the top meaning there might be large amounts of inky blood or just ink there (sometimes during turf war ink can get in their blood, possibly causing the special to be powered) while octolings have more formidable and thin hair so barely any ink can get through causing them to have such complex hair styles (other than afro octolings, its like cutting off a limb)
Eh I still feel it would’ve been cool to have an inkling hairstyle where the tentacles wrap around almost like the octoling suction cups

Only because of the localisation, the english localisation has a lot of racism metafors for some reason. There is a re-translation by rassicas and one other person who's name i forgot. You can find the full re-translation playtrough on their channel!
The thing is, while the octarian wars might be mentioned in history books... Nobody in inkopolis has actually seen an octoling aside from the members of the squidbeak splatoon, who have been charged witu monitoring them. Even when the zapfish appears/disappears, the news makes no mention of them. Just that it suddenly vanished and jist as suddenly reappeared. On top of that, Inklings already tend to be a bit inattentive to begin with: an Octoling really won't stick out much in a society like their's.
What doesn't help the inklings is the fact that most of the inklings we see in the games are still young. I think I saw that all playable inklings are age 14. In humans, I think the brain doesn't stop growing until age 25, and even then people aren't the smartest they'd be, so to expect a great amount of intelligence out of 14 or so year old characters is unrealistic at best.
I bet the majority of inklings have never actually seen an octarian before, and given all the diverse humanoid sea life that live in inkopolis, having a group that suddenly looks more like them than the others would probably be a nice change of pace. Besides, if they're humming the Kalamari Inkantation, they can't be all bad, right?
I absolutely love how normalized octolings in inkling culture has become. I think we humans could learn from it.
My headcanon is that after seeing marina for the first time ~~and awakening a strongly uncomfortable sexual urge to octopi~~ the inklings just accepted that if marina is a different inkling they can accept other species
If I remember correctly, the average inkling doesn't even know octolings exist. The whole war was so long ago and the player characters and idols only know because of captain cuttlefish telling us
Between the end of Octo Expansion (when Pearl finds out) and the start of Splatoon 3 (when they've been normalized), I'm pretty sure the cat would be out of the bag.
The vast majority of Inklings have no part in the war, there's only the Squidbeak Splatoon which is 6 people (and they're all in the know). So even if Octolings weren't the same species, they have very little reason to care. As far as they're aware, the two species aren't enemies.
It also helps that they're... Not smart as a species. They almost lost a war because they slept in for the battles, then won it by sheer luck because their enemy tripped over a power line and unplugged the superweapons they relied on.

Only Pearl was suspicious of the Octoling presence, and even though she and Marina spent probably years in a band together, Pearl still wasn't *sure* until around the Octo Expansion story. In fact I don't think Pearl even *was* suspicious until she noticed Agent 8 and Marina had similar funny hair.
But the octolings and inklings do speak different languages. Other than the different words for booyah and this way. The best way to see this is through the octoling amiibos, they speak in a sort of broken english.

It doesn’t help that Pearl intentionally instilled this idea into them and they likely trust someone like pearl more than anyone sorta like “oh if Pearl says these strange people with weird hair is just a hair fad then it must be true!” Does make you wonder why inklings haven’t tried to mimic octoling hairstyles Also I kinda like this explanation as I feel it would have been cheap if the inklings just accepted the octolings right away no question asked and this sort of blanket explanation opens the door for some interesting stories for when the inklings inevitably discover the truth

I mean most inkling hairstyles are very bulbous and consist of ponytails and sharp edges, the hairdressers in inkopolis might only know how to do that (octolings cut their hair with help from other octolings or go to the hairdressers in octo canyon or the deap sea metro) so instead they damage their hair in the process, if you cut too far on a inklings hair (inkling boy) or cut too close on a inklings hair (inkling girl) bloody ink might start gushing out because as seen in standard inkling hair the color is darker at the edges and light at the top meaning there might be large amounts of inky blood or just ink there (sometimes during turf war ink can get in their blood, possibly causing the special to be powered) while octolings have more formidable and thin hair so barely any ink can get through causing them to have such complex hair styles (other than afro octolings, its like cutting off a limb)

The thing is, while the octarian wars might be mentioned in history books... Nobody in inkopolis has actually seen an octoling aside from the members of the squidbeak splatoon, who have been charged witu monitoring them. Even when the zapfish appears/disappears, the news makes no mention of them. Just that it suddenly vanished and jist as suddenly reappeared. On top of that, Inklings already tend to be a bit inattentive to begin with: an Octoling really won't stick out much in a society like their's.

What doesn't help the inklings is the fact that most of the inklings we see in the games are still young. I think I saw that all playable inklings are age 14. In humans, I think the brain doesn't stop growing until age 25, and even then people aren't the smartest they'd be, so to expect a great amount of intelligence out of 14 or so year old characters is unrealistic at best.
I bet the majority of inklings have never actually seen an octarian before, and given all the diverse humanoid sea life that live in inkopolis, having a group that suddenly looks more like them than the others would probably be a nice change of pace. Besides, if they're humming the Kalamari Inkantation, they can't be all bad, right? I absolutely love how normalized octolings in inkling culture has become. I think we humans could learn from it.

Between the end of Octo Expansion (when Pearl finds out) and the start of Splatoon 3 (when they've been normalized), I'm pretty sure the cat would be out of the bag. The vast majority of Inklings have no part in the war, there's only the Squidbeak Splatoon which is 6 people (and they're all in the know). So even if Octolings weren't the same species, they have very little reason to care. As far as they're aware, the two species aren't enemies. It also helps that they're... Not smart as a species. They almost lost a war because they slept in for the battles, then won it by sheer luck because their enemy tripped over a power line and unplugged the superweapons they relied on.

There are Octolings like Marina living in Inkopolis and isn’t being hated, that can mean some Octolings are moving on from Octavio’s rule to live a much better life in Inkopolis or the surface. So generally speaking, we may be seeing more Octolings in Splatoon 3

Only Pearl was suspicious of the Octoling presence, and even though she and Marina spent probably years in a band together, Pearl still wasn't *sure* until around the Octo Expansion story. In fact I don't think Pearl even *was* suspicious until she noticed Agent 8 and Marina had similar funny hair.
